Holiday Shopping 2007: Many Happy Returns
Sure we all wish that everyone will love the gifts we give them this year, but reality bites. Sometimes we do miss the mark.
We don't want to include the sales receipts in a gift, but it's a good idea to keep the receipts on file and let those on your list know that you have them in case the gift fails to please.
The folks at Consumer Reports say returning unwanted gifts may be more difficult this season because some store return policies have become stricter. Many retailers require receipts. Some are charging fees for restocking and open boxes or missing packaging.
Stores are keeping their own lists and checking them twice. Folks who have a reputation for returning, especially without a receipt, may be stuck with their gift. Some retailers including Kmart, Lowe’s, and Wal-Mart, use computer systems to monitor how often a customer returns items without a sales slip and may refuse to take the item back.
Before you buy, check the policy. Info often is available on the store’s Web site. Or you can call customer service line or visit the local store.
