Must-have toys

Kids want toys — lots of them — at holiday time. But finding the right toy could be a tough job this year.

Major toy makers including Mattel, Fisher-Price and RC2 Corp. have recalled millions of China-made toys since June for failing to meet federal lead paint standards or containing magnets that can become loose and pose a choking threat.

The recall list includes various models of favorite brands including Barbie, Thomas & Friends and Dora the Explorer. Not surprisingly, some of those brands also made the National Retail Federation’s must-have toys list.

The list, released this week, is based on a survey of nearly 8,000 consumers:

Top 10 toys for girls
1. Barbie 2. Bratz 3. Dolls (generic) 4. Dora the Explorer 5. Disney Princess 6. Disney Hannah Montana 7. Nintendo Wii 8. Webkinz 9. Elmo 10. American Girl

Top 10 toys for boys
1. Transformers 2. Video games 3. Nintendo Wii 4. Cars (generic) 5. Spider-Man 6. Legos 7. Thomas the Tank Engine 8. Xbox 360 9. Elmo 10. Remote controlled vehicles

Visit the Consumer Products Safety Commission Web site for more information about toy recalls.
