Candles on the Avenue is gone

Before you drive to your favorite store, make sure it's still in business. The economy has been taking a toll on some of the places that have been in business for many years as well as the short timers.

I drove from my home in Delray to Lake Worth a few Saturdays ago just to get some of my fave round candles at Candles on the Avenue. We had just been there around Christmas -- and there was brown paper on the windows. The Web site is unavailable.

Sorry to see it and owner Lori McConnaughay go. It was a pleasure to shop there. She always had great advice. Her best: If you use those round candles, allow them to burn for two hours the first time you light them so they burn properly from then on.

With gas prices in the stratosphere, my best advice to you: Call before you drive.
