Free Children's clothing-- for you or charity

babydress.jpg

By now, you have probably seen the VW commercial where Brooke Shields accuses women of getting pregnant just so they could buy the new Tiguan. Pretty silly, isn't it?

I agree. But I must admit there are some things that may make you wonder what it would be like to dress a child in adorable kid's clothes. Team some great looking clothes with a great deal and you have the offer from ManyBabyThings.com store in Bay Harbor Islands. Starting Nov. 3, anyone who spends $50 or more at the store can get an additonal article of clothing for their child or donate it to a local charity by placing it in a bin at the store. The free items, which sell for $8 to $20 each, range from complete outfits to leather belts or bows. The campaign continues until all promotional items are given away.

ManyBabyThings.com is known for having a large range of clothing from hand embroidered classics to trendy fashions. Check out this imported designer dress with short puffy sleeved dress with hand crocheted embroidered flowers ($74.99).

The store is at 1039 Kane Concourse, Bay Harbor Islands. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 305- 993-6472.

Nicole Barr jewelry on sale and free umbrellas at Flagler Museum in Palm Beach

Red-Diamond-Dragonfly.jpg

I love museums, but I'll also share a guilty secret with you. I believe one of the great things about museums is their gift shops. Even if the exhibition was disappointing, the gift shop is the prize to look forward to at the end.

Last weekend my husband Carter and I went to see the Richard Morris Hunt exhibit at Whitehall, the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. It is a must-see for any architectural buffs.

Anyway, I digress. The gift shop always has something that I desire. This time it was the exquisite jewelry created by artist Nicole Barr. I fell in love with a pair of amethyst earrings that were surrounded with small diamonds, and my husband bought them for me. The regular price was $260 and they were on sale for $155.25. A real deal.

Even better, I got a free compact umbrella for every $35 I spent. This umbrella bonus is available through Nov. 1. I learned it was a special for the slow summer months, but there will be another giveaway closer to Christmas and I'll let you know.

We bought the last pair of earrings in this style, but this Red Diamond Dragonfly pin is another example of Barr's fine work. (See photo courtesy of the Flagler Museum Store.) It is a fusion of fired glass with sterling silver, resulting in beautiful colors that will never change. Her designs also add diamonds, sapphires, rubies, amethyst, topaz and other semi-precious gemstones. The original price was $580. It's on sale for $329.50.

Besides jewlery the gift shop has toys, books, tableware and other goodies.

Whitehall is a great place to fuel your mind and your fantasies. Go this weekend. For more info see, flaglermuseum.us.

Halloween frightening for shoppers

mary%20janes.jpg

I'm not going to tell you what I decided to go as for a Halloween party this weekend, but you can probably guess from my shopping experience.

First, I stopped at the Party Supermarket to buy a wig. The place had a line around the block waiting to try on the pre-made, overly expensive costumes. I found a long dark wig with bangs for $14.99.

Then I found some flat Mary-Jane shoes at Ross Dress for Less, $12. Next I needed a loud dress or skirt. I had nothing in my closet, of course.

I went to Kohl's and found a scary number of choices masquerading as fashion trends. I picked up one blue-and-black polka dot number for $8. I also found a freshwater pearl necklace I couldn't resist for $11.99.

red%20glasses.jpgNow all I need are red-framed glasses and something for my teeth.

Know who I'm going to be? All I know is I've already spent way too much money on this Halloween costume. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Designer jeans for $40 at Filene's Basement

I had to go to the place "where bargains were born," Filene's Basement, now that it has opened in Aventura.

It's nothing like the flagship store in Boston. I remember going there with my friend Lynn. It was a mess but a fun mess. Clothes on racks all over the place. I found a slinky black dress for some ridiculously low price.

Aventura is a bit more tame. Clothes are nicely organized on racks sporting designer names. The prices? A bit more steep than I remember in Boston.

Still, there are bargains to be found. The biggest is probably Filene's choice of designer jeans, many for less than $40. A variety of earrings and necklaces are easy pickups as well and designer sunglasses such as a pair of Oscar de la Renta's for $12.99.

Fantastic prices on women's and men's suits, if you're in the market for that.

I fell in love with a wrap dress from Barney's New York, but it was still too pricey for this bargain hunter at $130. But I'll be back. It's worth the drive. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Sur La Table to open in Coconut Creek

plate.jpg

grow.jpeg

Sur La Table, the fab store for cooks that I discovered in Pike Place Market in Seattle when I was a food editor, is set to open in Coconut Creek Nov. 6.

This is the third SoFla store. Others are at Downtown at the Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens and at the Shops at Pembroke Gardens in Pembroke Pines.

What makes Sur La Table stand out from other stores for cooks is the fact that it was inspired by kitchen stores in Paris. It's a chain, but doesn't look or feel corporate. The sales people are trained well and can help you pick out what's best for you or a friend. I just love the place.

Here are a couple of items I especially like:

The La Rossa plates are an exclusive to Sur La Table that is inspired by traditional Italian designs. It's $19 for the salad plate and $20 for the dinner plate.

If your herbs always burn up outside, check out the AeroGarden Space Saver 6 Elite, which features a new advanced growing system. Comes with a Gourmet Herb Kit and two grow bulbs; accommodates up to six pods. Sells for $169.98.

The store is located at The Promenade at Coconut Creek, 4449 Lyons Road, Suite J-102
Coconut Creek, 954-247-2204.

Put on your running shoes and sprint to DSW. The shoe store's sales racks are full of designer shoes -- Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Ann Marino and many, many more.

Most are dress-up heels and sandals -- great for holiday events. Get this: I bought two pairs of gorgeous shoes: a marbled shiny brownish black Ann Marino and sexy black pumps from Rampage for $35. OK, I had two $10 coupons DSW had sent me for being a loyal customer -- but still!

So don't wait until you need those satin with rhinestone pumps for the holiday party, go while you can get them el cheapo. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Get $50 Visa gift card for Barbie dolls

barbie1.jpeg

It doesn't matter how old we are, we still love Barbie. What is it with that beautiful babe?

Well, maybe not all of us love "Caribou Barbie," but this is a shopping blog and I will try to keep Sarah Palin and her $150,000 wardrobe out of this for now. Sorry. Just couldn't resist the barb at the human Barbie.

Anyhow, your kids may be begging you to add to their collection, like this Mariposa Rayla, shown here, that is based on the Mariposa DVD. If you spend $100 on some Barbie merchandise, you can get the $50 gift to spend on anything you want -- shopping, gas or even groceries.

Just save the reciept and the original UPC code and mail them with the coupon. The offer expires Dec., 31, 2008. For the coupon and info, see barbiebucks.com.

Sterling silver a steal at Kohl's

Kohls%20earrings.jpg
Here's an easy gift for mom, the sisters or a good friend: Sterling silver jewelry, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, on sale for 65 percent to 70 percent off at Kohl's in Boynton Beach.

I overheard a man shopping for a birthday present for his wife. He was going to get her a Citizens watch -- also on sale. I wanted to scream at him: No! No! Something romantic, stupid. But I just let the saleswoman gently suggest a more elegant watch instead.

But back to the jewelry: lots of choices, both traditional and modern. Great for gifts for others -- or yourself! -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Layaway for the holidays and free coupons at Kmart

Layaway. Does it have a retro sound? Or do you even remember it?

When I was growing up, folks didn't use credit cards for everything. You either paid cash, or the poorer folks and teenage girls, would put the object of their desires on layaway.

It's back. Thanks to the credit crunch and the recession. My fellow, shopping diva Marcia Pounds, and I both saw ads for the retro practice this week.

Thus far, the only one I am able to confirm is layaway at Kmart, which Adweek.com says positions them as "the only mass discount retailer to offer a layaway service."

The TV ads, which started airing last week, are pitching layaway as a way to get buy gifts for Christmas.

Here are the terms, according to Kmart.com.

You can pay over 8 weeks. Just select your items and bring them to the layaway counter and make a down payment. You need to make payments every two weeks at the store. For more info and layaway fast facts, see www.kmart.com.

Another tip: You can get two $5 Kmart coupons when You sign up for kmart email.

Get in the holiday mood at Crate & Barrel

Crate%20%26%20Barrel%20runner.jpg
Whether it's Halloween, Thanksgiving or Christmas, Crate & Barrel Outlet at the Sawgrass Mills mall is bound to get you in the holiday mood.

I stopped there on Saturday and found a beautiful table runner 50 percent off, only $19.95. I chose the Alexandra red design, but there's also one with autumn colors (see at right).

Then I found an irrestible item for $6.95: fanciful salt and pepper shakers in the design of snowmen. My friend M collects those for her friend M, so I may pass them on to her. If not, one of my sisters' is getting snowmen as part of her Christmas present.

The snowmen design also is available in a sugar and creamer for $12.95, appetizer plates for $14.95, and tapered candles - snowmen with tall winter hats, 2 for $5.95.

What a fun tabletop for the children in us during the holidays! And at a bargain price, of course. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Happy birthday IKEA! Coupon w/ purchase this weekend

This weekend, 10/17-19, IKEA Sunrise, FL, is offering a $10 gift card when you spend $50, if you bring the coupon from Thursday's Sun-Sentinel, page 18A. 10/16/08. There's also a coupon for a free meal. I heard the Swedish meatballs are great!

IKEA is located at 151 NW 136th Avenue in Sunrise. (595 West Exit 1) If you haven't been there, be prepared for a treat, but I'm sure it'll be crowded. Sometimes the traffic backed up into the parking lot looks just like the traffic entering a Dolphins game!

Treat your ficus with Bayer Tree and Shrub Care

fly17a.jpgI overheard a conversation at an outdoor dinner party the other night, as we admired the lovely landscaping. Ficus whitefly is causing defoliation on many ficus shrubs and trees.

My friends got their info from the Sun-Sentinel. I work here, but somehow missed that story...bet it ran while I was out of town. So I wonder if any of you missed it too. If your ficus trees or shrubs get this bug, then replacing them will surely cut into your shopping budget!

The next morning, I checked out the ficus hedge at my condo, and sure enough, it was losing leaves and getting 'stick-y.' (Picture is from our story, not my yard.)

Bayer's Tree and Shrub Care will treat whitefly, it's available at Home Depot. I didn't want to waste precious time shopping prices, our plants needed immediate help. A 32 ounce bottle was $19.97 and was enough to treat 5 two foot plants. A gallon bottle is $69.97. Pricey!

I bought the small bottle and treated the worst parts, but will probably need to get more. Has anyone found a cheaper way to buy this stuff?

Stroll Pineapple Grove in Delray Beach

fatboy.jpg

Looking for a fun afternoon with girlfriends?

Hit Delray Beach. Not the famed Atlantic Avenue, but NE 2nd Avenue, the entrance to Pineapple Grove.

I discovered that many great little shops and restaurants have opened up along Pineapple Grove. The street is a bit like Atlantic Avenue used to be: Full of unique shops and friendly and less expensive restaurants.

My friend M. and I had a fine breakfast of frittatas and french toast at Joseph's Wine Bar. After buying my quota ($20) of craft fair jewelry, I checked out the shops.

I found upscale jewelry and art at Spotted on 2nd, unique gifts at Conversation Pieces, Fatboy outdoor cushions at Museo (see right), and monogramed gifts for baby and children (lunchbox, $25, or backpack, just under $40). Pricey, but a unique present for the doting aunt or grandmother.

Met up with two friends, C and A, on Pineapple Grove and they also had a find: Kismet, a consignment shop with "gently worn" clothes. C found the little black dress she has been looking for, $35. Big shipment of designer dresses coming in Nov. 13, the shop told C.

So hit the boutiques in Delray Beach for an enjoyable day and you'll also be supporting small business, which makes the South Florida economy go 'round. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Filene's Basement opens in Aventura October 15th

filenes1.jpg
I've heard so much about Filene's Basement. Never been there. I am really excited....I'm finally going to get to shop at Filene's Basement! It feels so...so...what's the word...so very cosmopolitan!!

I saw it on Biscayne Blvd the other day as I drove down to Bal Harbor Shops. Wow, my heart jumped...it looked open...too bad...not yet. A freestanding building on the east side of Biscayne. (17651 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura.)

I live and work in Fort Lauderdale, but it seems there are a few reasons to drive south for discount shopping. Loehmann's is down there, and now Filene's.

What do you think? Is Filene's Basement worth getting excited about? Is it all it's cracked up to be? Have any of you shopped there? Is there a good selection? What kind of things do they sell...Designer dresses...Casual clothes? Which do you like better, Loehmanns or Filene's?

What are your favorite stores for finding bargain clothes in South Florida?

The Dolphin Mall might be our new destination shopping center

Dolphin_Mall-9099.jpg
Last week I promised to let you know about the Miami mall a cute hip young fashion writer recommended. We thought we'd check it out first. It's an easy drive if you follow the Homestead signs driving south on the Turnpike. We didn't...don't ask.

Hardly an undiscovered gem, the huge parking lot was full, full, full. But, wow, well worth the drive. It's huge....and doesn't seem as picked over as local Sawgrass Mills.

It has some of the same big flagship stores as Sawgrass: Neiman Marcus Last Call, Off Fifth Saks Outlet, Burlington Coat Factory, T J Maxx, Marshalls, Bed Bath and Beyond. In total there are over 240 stores and restaurants.

Fellow blogger Marcia and I only had a few hours...we could have spent the whole day! Heck, you could spend a week there! We happened to walk in the entrance that took us to For Love 21, the Forever 21 accessory store. Huge selection, amazing prices. I bought a beaded necklace with a cheap charm on it, intending to replace their charm with an old locket I've had. Marked $4.95...scanned in at $1. Like a treasure hunt!

We ran out of time after Neiman Marcus Last Call...walking out for a previous engagement was sheer torture. The store signs were like the mythical sirens summoning us: Michael Kors, Coach, Calvin Klein, DKNY, DSW, Ann Taylor.....

Spanx for $12!

pencil%20skirt.jpg

Suck it in girls, it's nearly the season for little black dresses and evening gowns. Thanks to Spanx founder Sara Blakely, you don't have to hold your breath all evening.

And thanks to Neiman Marcus Last Call at Miami's Dolphin Mall, you can buy the Spanx original design -- tummy control and flab smoothing to just below the knee -- for only $12, regularly $20.

Since inventing Spanx -- why didn't we think of that? -- Blakely has expanded her line to many varieties including textured tights, slimming apparel, bras and socks. Her black pencil skirt, a retro favorite this fall season, has a built-in liner to smooth and shape you. The "Bod-a-Bing" skirt, at right, is $68 at Spanx.com.

You go Sara. Women everywhere thank you. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

"Pink" products for cancer at Bloomingdale's

slimine.jpeg

prettybra.jpeg

Are you in the pink during October as a celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month? Everyone seems to have hopped onto this marketing bandwagon and Bloomie's is no exception. The store has done everything from illuminating its flagship store on 59th Street in NYC with the color pink to offering special merchandise and promotions.

This Bloomie's bra event seems to make a heck of a lot more sense than buying a pink mixer or vaccum cleaner unless you are channeling Reese Witherspoon's Elle from Legally Blonde.

Get fitted for your perfect bra from Wacoal, Donna Karen Intimates or DKNY Underware and Wacoal and $2 will be donated by Wacoal to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. You will also get information on early cancer detection and a self breast examination guide. Buy a Wacoal "Awareness Bra" and an additional $2 will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The special bra event is Oct. 11 at the Aventura store and Oct. 31 at the Boca Raton store.

Option include sexy bras like the Wacoal "Pretty and Polished" full-figure bra for $60 and the Wacoal "Slimline Mimimizer" for $58.

Make this the year you ramp up the sexy quotient of your Halloween costume. Check out the hot costumes at www.cutesygirl.biz.

Ann Taylor tops for $19.99

Ann%20Taylor.jpg

You can always count on Ann Taylor for work dress -- or play. Work and casual tops are on sale at Ann Taylor stores this week for as little as $19.99.

I snapped up two tops and a matching skirt at Ann Taylor store at CityPlace.

What I also like about Ann Taylor is the saleswomen are actually helpful. I found out, for example, that I fit in a medium/petite size top. I never thought a petite size would fit me, but many are not that different from a medium, one saleswoman told me.

That opens up a whole new world on the sales rack. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Spa week at Red Door

OK, I've got my appointment along with my bf "E."

But you gotta run to the phone (can't make an appointment online) and sign up for the Spa Week $50 specials at Elizabeth Arden Red Door Salon & Spa.

You have the choice of a facial, body melt (shea butter wrap and then a massage) or a manicure/pedicure special for only $50.

These treatments, at the luxurious Red Door, are usually $100 plus! Facials were already sold out at the Red Door location at the Bonaventure resort in Weston, but still available at The Galleria in Fort Lauderdale as of Saturday.

We chose the Bonaventure because after pampering, you can hang out for the day at the hotel's beautiful waterfall pool.

Spa week special is only for Oct. 13 to 17. Get your bf, like I did, and go for it. Life is short. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Floridians-Eye view of shopping in Las Vegas Nevada

Vegas_pic.jpg

My impression of Las Vegas is ‘over the top,’ huge and super expensive. I’d heard so much about the $1.6 billion Bellagio…lucky for me, we got wedding party rates, and I shared the room with 2 friends. It felt like a fancy airport: lines of people at check in, more lines to see the concierge, and a half hour wait to get to the breakfast buffet. For heavens sake, there are 10,000 people just working there!!

I wandered through the designer shops in the hotels: Caesars Palace Forum Shops, the Venetian and the Wynn. I’m a sale shopper, so this was a painful tease…window shopping Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo. Gorgeous stuff, but remember, I’m the girl with the champagne taste and beer budget.

Connected by a bridge from the Wynn hotel is the Fashion Show Mall, with Saks, Bloomingdales, Dillards, Neiman Marcus, as well as lots of smaller chain stores: like Forever 21, Ann Taylor, etc. After a quick walk through, I began to wonder if they knew what sales were in Las Vegas.

A $16 cab ride took us to the Premium Outlets, which I had heard beforehand was a bust, but as we’ve all experienced, sale shopping is hit or miss. This time it was a hit! Great brands: Theory, Elie Tahari, Calvin Klein, Coach, etc. Great stuff at great prices....my friend Indy got some good buys (I told you I would shop vicariously!)

I was only tempted by one deal I couldn’t pass up. Any three pairs of clearance designer shoes for $45. I had a hard time finding a third pair in my size, but I was determined. How can you not??!!

One of the guests at the wedding is a fashion writer from South Beach. She told me about her favorite mall in Miami...”an undiscovered gem,” she said. I’ve never been there, so I’m going to check it out this weekend, and give you a full report next week. Can you guess where I’m going?

Coupon for CVS Extra Care card holders

cvslogonew.gif

I apologize if you saw my CVS coupon offer Friday morning. Apparently, the link was to my personal coupon, and not a generic one. I contacted CVS for a generic replacement, so I could post that one instead, but CVS doesn't have a generic coupon offer at the time.

Joanne at CVS corporate offices said, "The best way to spread the word about a deal or a coupon is to encourage your readers to register their own email addresses as part of their ExtraCare membership. That way, they will get their own unique deals. Here is the link for people to sign up or add their e-mail to their account."

CVS Extra Care

I know we are all reluctant to share our email addresses, the spam can be soooo annoying, but the CVS Extra Care program is a money saver. I know, I know....who can keep track of all the 'dad-blasted' little membership cards??? A royal pain, but well worth it, if you are into saving $$$.

For example, this week Cover Girl foundation is $5.49. I bought the foundation, got $5.49 back in Extra Bucks. And I used the manufacturer's coupon from Sunday's paper, for $1 off, so I actually made $1 profit on the item. Now, that's my kind of shopping!

Treats for moms and kids at Marshall's

No trick! Stuart Weitzman, Kate Spade and other designer shoes and boots at Marshall's.

I have my eye on some wicked dark red heels by Weitzman, but at $129.99 still too pricey for me. Of course, all these shoes retail for two or three times the Marshall's price so they are a relative bargain. Let's see: Sexy shoes or go visit my son at college? Darn, the kid wins.

Moms (and dads) should also check out the children's Halloween costumes at Marshall's. Adorable princess dresses, Snow White outfit and other poofery for the girls. Batman, G.I. Joe and Star Wars for the boys. Priced nicely at $12.99 to $29.99. Beats sitting up at the sewing machine all night.

Maybe I could work those red shoes into a costume. Any ideas? -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Sale for Oil of Olay fans

Oil%20of%20Olay.jpg

I've used Oil of Olay. products most of my adult life. In recent years, the product line has been expanded and I've been wanting to experiment with some of the new products.

A sale at CVS helps make that possible. CVS is having a beauty products sale and that includes the Oil of Olay line. You can get the pre-moistened facial wipes two for one. Those make the night-time makeup removal routine a cinch.

Most recently, I've tried the 14-day Regenerist Skin Intervention and Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream. Love them both. Now I'm on to the Definity line of moisterizers.

What do you think of the Oil of Olay products? Do they compare with department store creams? I think they do, and cost much less. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Discounts and free gift card

costume.jpg

Are you ready to save more money? Even those of us who would never think of clipping a coupon are looking for ways to save these days.

Here's a great one that I learned about from ShopSmart magazine:

Ebates.com is a fab site. When you sign in, you get a choice of $5 in cash or a $10 gift card from Circut City, Target, Sephora or iTunes. When you check out, Ebates.com gives you credit on your account with a rebate. It can be as high as 26 percent, but most are 1 to 4 percent. If you are really generous, you can donate your rebate to charity.

ShopSmart gives a great tip: "Click on the "daily double" tab. For that day, rebates from a selected retailer are doubled."

Have a dog that loves Halloween? Get started with this cute hotdog outfit from target.com. It's only $9.99 and comes in small, medium and large.
