Las Vegas on sale baby!

Vegas fans alert: Southwest Airlines' flights to Las Vegas are 50 percent off in the next two days, Dec. 30 and 31, for trips through March 11. From Fort Lauderdale, that's as low as $75 one way.

I didn't think I would like Vegas but I was pleasantly surprised. The live shows are great. We saw a Cirque du Soleil show. I understand Bette Midler is performing there now and I've always wanted to see her perform (sing, not in Cirque du Soleil).

So don't waste time thinking too much because these flights will go fast! -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

New Years resolution~Organize that closet

It's that time of year again....New Years resolution time! What are we going to accomplish this year? I've given up on the ten pounds I've promised to lose for the last ten New Years. I might even have a ceremonial backyard burning of the old favorite jeans I have given up on ever getting into again.

Have you made a New Years resolution this year? Let us hear about your plans....maybe we can help each other, at least with moral support.

This year I am serious about getting my closet in order. With very limited space, it's going to be a challenge. But burning those old jeans might be a good start!

A previous owner lowered the whole closet ceiling to install a small duct for central air-conditioning. My first project will be to raise the ceiling behind the duct, and reclaim all that storage space.

Martha Stewart had some great suggestions for stretching closet space. (If I had a gazillion dollars and lots of employees, my closet would be great too, Martha. Can you tell I'm jealous? Insanely!!) Click on the link below to see Martha's suggestions:

Find that special dress at Macy's Wellington store

Well, I was really tempted to get that black Anne Klein at; it was online for about two minutes for $107. But I hedged and now it's back up to $168.

But that's OK. I found two dresses at Macy's Wellington store today and bought both for less than $100. Neither is black, which is a surprise, but both are more versatile than the Anne Klein, anyway. Each was 50 percent off the retail price plus I got another 15 percent off with Macy's coupon in the Sun Sentinel on Sunday and Monday.

This Evan Picone red dress at right is marked down from $99 to $69 online. I got it for $45 with my coupon in the store.

That coupon is still good through Tuesday, Dec. 30, so don't throw it -- or the newspaper -- away! I left plenty of dresses there for you. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

If you like Bath & Body Works, this is the time to stock up!

It's their semi-annual sale time, where the prices don't get any better than this. I had a co-worker who said these sale prices are so good, she buys extras and sells them on eBay for a profit!

For example the signature body cream has a new packaging, the old ones are $3, on sale from $10.50 - $12. How can you beat that?? Prices good until December 28th.

Sale at Walgreens~Christmas Items 50% off Christmas Day

This seems sort of anticlimactic, after all the great sales before Christmas, but if you didn't stock up on wrapping paper for next year already...this is the time to do it, at 50% off.

Spirit Airlines $9 Club fares can be an amazing deal

Spirit Airlines has a $9 Club that offers too-good-to-be-true fares to some of the cities Spirit services. Pay $35/year to join the club...if you travel to the places they advertise, and you aren't picky about the dates you travel, you will be amazed at the low fares!

I just booked a ticket to NY from Ft Lauderdale, $1 each way, with taxes and fees the round trip ticket was $25. It was only available for a few days in May. I don't know where I will be in May, but for $25, I think I'll be in NY!

Right now they are advertising $8 each way to Atlanta from FLL, available a few dates in January. I can't afford not to go.

Just remember, Spirit makes it's money on the poor suckers who show up after the 45 minute cut off time for their flights. If you book a Spirit ticket, make sure you get to the airport an hour before the flight with a pre-printed boarding pass in hand. After the 45 minute mark, they don't let you on your booked flight, but send you to the 'sucker' line to pay $200+ to rebook another flight at last minute rates.

Spirit fares good through 12/25/2008.

Christmas time is chocoholic time

For chocoholics like me, Christmas is the time to enjoy the best in chocolate. If you're going to eat the calories, you might as well go for most delicious chocolate morsels.

Godiva is on sale everywhere: Barnes & Noble and department stores. You can pick up Ferraro Rocher chocolates in decorative Christmas tree boxes for cheap, too.

But my favorite are the locally made chocolates at Hoffman's in Palm Beach County. Hoffman's Chocolates' Greenacres store also does its annual holiday decorations and light display -- well worth seeing -- through 10 p.m. Dec. 30th. Lights and trains are turned on at 6 p.m. From I-95, drive west on Lake Worth Road. Address is 5190 Lake Worth Road.

Holiday shopping: When it's time to stop

We're down to the wire and no doubt many of us will be out there scooping up one more Christmas present.

When do you know it's time to stop shopping? Here are some red flags:

When you can't remember which store or mall you're in.
When you buy something for someone you hardly know.
When you buy your friend's dog a present -- just because.
When you max out a credit card and have no idea you were near your limit.
When the merchandise looks picked-over or returned (probably is).
When you buy a present, any present, for that person you forgot.
When it's Christmas Eve and the stores, mercifully, close for a day.

Then it's time to shop all over again (but heed above warnings!) When do you think it's time to stop? -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Sun Sentinel shopping bloggers in the movie 'Marley and Me'

Here's some blogger news: Did you know part of the movie Marley and Me was filmed in the newsroom at the Sun Sentinel, because John Grogan, the author of the book was a columnist here?

Marcia 'Bargain Hunter' Pounds and myself (no-nickname-yet-Kathy) were background artists (extras) in the movie, so we were invited to a local screening this week. Double check product number before ordering online

Black Friday weekend I finally broke down and ordered a large flat screen television. My TVs are so huge and heavy, I have to call in the troops to move one, or even to hook up an accessory. I don't want to become a statistic, one of those poor souls who gets a broken neck when the television lands on them.

I liked the Sharp Aquos model and Dell was advertising a great deal on the 42" one. On the Dell Website, there was a picture of a flat black TV with chrome trim, and underneath a headline that said 42" Sharp Aquos, 1080p HDTV. At $779 with free shipping, it seemed too good to be true.

I clicked on the picture with the Sharp Aquos headline and it took me to another screen where there was an order form with a long model number. I trusted the picture and headline and ordered what I thought was the 42" Sharp Aquos TV.

Delivery guessed it...not an Aquos at all, but a shiny black plastic Sharp TV, which at $779, was pretty much the price I could have gotten this model on sale anywhere.

When I called Dell, they asked me to prove that I clicked on a Sharp Aquos picture, or pay a 15% restocking fee. I'm going to take this up with my credit card company, I'm hoping I don't have to pay the fee, but I sure have learned a good lesson.

Before you order anything online, find the exact model you want, and make a note of the model number. Do not trust the pictures on the website.

Remote control for Christmas tree lights at CVS

Finishing the last strand of lights on my tree, I went to plug them in, only, darn, the last plug was female!! No prongs! Somewhere, one strand inside was backwards. Off to the 24 hour CVS. "Is there a double male adapter for jerks who string their lights backwards and can't plug them in?" I ask.

The next solution...a green extension cord to run up inside the tree to the orphan prongs. The green extension cord is $7.99. As you may know if you read this blog, I am a big fan of the CVS Extra Care discounts and coupons, so I check my stash and there it is, a coupon for $5 off $15 in Holiday Decor! Looking at the wide array of lighting accessories, I spot a tree lights remote control. An indulgence, yes, but now it's become a matter of saving, not spending! Right?

I got home, rigged the lights with the new extension cord, and plugged it into the wall outlet via the new remote plug. Then I sat on the couch and pushed the 'on' button on the transmitter. WOW! It worked!!

Monday, CVS emailed their new ad with another coupon, this time it was for $3 off $10 in holiday decor good thru 12/22. Did you get yours? I would love to post one for you, but CVS won't send Shop-O-Matic generic coupons. You must have your own CVS Extra Care card to get them. "Maybe I'll get a remote for Mom," I think. And my newly married nephew. Combining sales with coupons = strategic shopping.

Long story longer, I went back to CVS, bought the $15.99 remotes on sale for $10.71, and with the -$3 coupon they were $7.71, plus tax. Shhh, don't tell CVS, but the good thing about getting the coupons via email is that you can print multiples.

Guess How many remotes I bought?

If you don't have a CVS Extra Care card, I highly recommend it for savings. You can get one in the store or sign up online. And give them your email address so they can send you printable coupons.

Sexy aprons heat up the kitchen

Are you old enough to remember when it was embarassing to let anyone know you were a good cook? We were trying to get out of the kitchen and into the boardroom in the 70s and 80s. I didn't tell anyone that I took a gourmet cooking class, and when I did cook I wore a red and white checked apron with the message: "For this I spent four years in college!"

Times have changed. Aprons are hot, particulrly these vintage-inspired aprons. The cupid apron, left, was $42 and is on sale for $36.

The Sweetheart apron, right, is out of stock in black and white, but it is available in red, orange, yellow and aqua. It sells for $42.

Save money on luggage fees at airports

Tired of paying more when you fly because of overweight luggage? Disgusting, isn't it?

Here's a solution. The Balanzza digital luggage scale is a light, portable scale that claims to have "impeccable accuracy." This little gadget can help you lighten the load at home rather than get a surprise at the airport. Take it along to be sure you know how much your gift-ladden suitcase weigh on the return flight.

Seldom Seen returns and other Las Olas tidbits

I was crushed earlier this fall when I walked past Seldom Seen, one of my favorite stores on Las Olas Boulevard, and there was a big sign of the times: Bankruptcy Sale.

Seldom Seem "reopens under new management," apparently, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, according to a new sign in the window.

All the same great stuff seems to be in the window. Seldom Seen has always been the place to go when you were looking for that perfect gift for someone, but had no idea what to buy. Walk into the store and there it was! Welcome back, Seldom Seen.

In other Las Olas news, I found these great Vera Bradley "Zip ID" case -- just enough room for a license, lipstick and your car keys. Only $10 at Needlepoint Originals. Great holiday present for colleagues or girlfriends.

Other Vera Bradley older styles and colors are 25 percent off at the store (but I'm not supposed to tell you that. Shhhh...) -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Inexpensive gift idea - battery operated candles

I went to dinner at a friend's the other night, outside under the stars. She said she couldn't keep candles burning outside with the Florida breezes, so she had small frosted votives with battery operated flickering candles at each place setting. The effect was lovely, and drew comments from everyone.

Saturday I had a few folks over to enjoy the boat parade, outside on a cool crisp evening. The group included my toddler grandkids. I knew they might get into trouble with real candles, so I copied my friend's idea and used the battery operated ones. Again, compliments.

Now, maybe you have been using battery operated candles for years? I, for one, have seen them in stores and thought they were gimmicky. Now that I've enjoyed them in different settings, I'm hooked. And I intend to get a few as gift items.

My friend got hers at Stein Mart. The nearest Stein Mart is far away from me, there's a CVS nearby, so guess where I got mine, 6 for $5. (I used a $5 off $15 in Holiday items Extra Care coupon that came on a CVS register receipt, so they were an even better deal.) Not as nice, but once you put them in a nice frosted votive, it's the glow that counts.

You can be thrifty or extravagant with the votive. The candles and votives pictured are from

More on Carrie Bradshaw heels for babies

Thanks for all your comments on the baby stilettos controvery. That's what blogging is all about!

This is embarassing, but I promised to share news of the baby high heels. I just had to buy the National Inquirer because of a story on Martha Stewart and found an article on the high-heeled baby shoes. See

The creators, Britta Bacon and Hayden Porter, told the Inquirer that they had received e-mails and pix from moms who love their shoes, but they also have had attacks. Hayden says they aren't designed for walking and the heels collapse if the little one tries to put her weight on them.

Here's a taste of the outgraged from the Internet; "Any mother who lets her daughter wear these shoes is the same mother who will let her daughter dress like Paris Hilton at 13 years old!"

Haven't weighed in yet? Let us know.We love controversy!

Lisa Perry Comes to Palm Beach

Lisa Perry, the designer who has a love of 1960s vintage couture fashion and art, will open her third boutique in the U.S. on December 17 in Palm Beach.

She has cool stuff like this multi-colored dress. Other items range from architecture, fashion and art books, jewlery, rare DVDs of movies from the 60s and vintage Heller dishware in bright colors.

No wonder she loves this stuff Her bio says: She grew up in the 'burbs of Chicago with Marimekko in her bedroom, a Saarinen filled living room and two-tone orange shag in her family room. (OMG, I shouldn't admit this, but I had two-tone orange shag in my bedroom in the 70s.)

Her Web site, doesn't give any prices, but expect them to be pricey in her 'hood. The store is located at 245A Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. For the holidays, it will be open 12 .m.-6 p.m. daily. Sunday hours continue only until Jan. 4.

Seaside wreath ideas in Coastal Living magazine

A few months ago a co-worker gave me her collection of Coastal Living magazines when she cleaned out her den. I had a flight the next day, so I tossed a few of them in my carry-on bag...turned out I was so entertained on the flight, I was sorry when we landed. I love the magazine. Fresh clean looks that work with the Florida lifestyle.

This month on their website they have some wreath ideas. Making your own wreath is one way to save on holiday spending. I bought my wreath at Costco this morning, before I saw these pictures, but I may just at least wire a few starfish into the evergreens. I don't live at the beach, but I'm on the New River watching boats pass by all day, so it feels like Florida living.

Aren't these great? Which one's your favorite?

Many years ago I had a twiggy grapevine wreath on my door. I saved it, and now every year I get some leftover branches where I buy my Christmas tree, and weave them into the grapevine wreath. Voila, a free wreath!

With Thanksgiving late this year, and the boat parade looming this weekend, I ran out of time.

Maybe next year, if I start earlier, I'll hot glue some shells onto the grapevine wreath. Coastal Living is not a Florida magazine, but it sure works in Florida.

If you love to decorate for the holidays, what bigger indulgence can you have than a tree by the pool? Coastal Living did one with turquoise balls to match the pool color. I don't usually like trendy 'color du jour' holiday ornaments, I'm a red, green, silver and gold traditionalist, but this turquoise is MEANT to be poolside, isn't it?

Tell us about your holiday decor. Any ideas you care to share?

Cheap way to save your pre-lit Christmas tree

If only I knew about the Light Keeper Pro before I discarded my two pre-lit artifcial Christmas trees.

I discovered the device which claims it can "fix lights with the squeeze of a trigger" last weekend at Seasons in the Sun in Boca Raton. The video that was playing was amazing. Those of you with pre-lit trees know the whole string goes out when one bulb is burned out and it's a time consuming pain to find the offending bulb.

But the video playing at the store showed that this clever device can fix it. Here's how it works:

Remove one bulb from the section that has gone out.
Plug the bulb socket into the device and pull the trigger about 6 or 7 times until the string is lit once more.
Now you can replace any non-working bulbs.

There's a technical explantion on the packaging of how it works. But most of us don't care how it works as long as it works. And it has received some good views on the Web.

Light Keeper Pro was $29.95 at Seasons in the Sun, 7501 N Federal Hwy (in hte back of the Hidden Valley shopping center at # D1). Boca Raton, 561- 995-7327.

Happy holidays.

Wireless router rebate deal of the week

Let me admit right up front, I'm technologically impaired, and should never EVER be trusted to recommend an electronic device. But bargain hunting is a challenge I am up for!! I have the patience of Job when it comes to surfing around looking for sales and rebates. The thrill of the hunt!! And no manuals to read....

I used to have a wireless router on my desktop, so that I could use my laptop all over the house. Since I am technologically impaired, my laptop always connected to my neighbors wireless, rather than mine, but he said he didn't know or care and this worked for me.

So I gave that router to my daughter....then my wireless neighbor moved! Oops! Went shopping for a new wireless router last night, wow, prices have gone up! Online I found a D-Link Rangebuster G router listed at $79.99 retail, on Amazon for $34.99, with a promise of a $30 rebate. And free shipping! If all goes well, the total = $4.99!!

Sounds like a deal to me, I ordered one. Now you geeks out there, let me know how I get this d*&^ thing to work!!

FAO Schwarz Under $20 line of FAO-branded toys at Macy's

When I think FAO Schwarz, I think of the Manhattan store with the miniature ride-on cars and the humongous stuffed animals, the place where the likes of Ivana and the Donald bought their kids toys.

Designer handbags a deal at TJ Maxx

I've been to New York City and back looking high and low for the right purse. I needed a plain black purse, but I'm a little fussy. I want one where I can easily access my cell phone. It has to fit a reporter's notebook. It can't be too boring and it has to be well under $100.Kathy%20purse.jpg

Finally, I swung by TJ Maxx at 3722 N. Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point and found a great selection of handbags, many designer names including B Makowsky, Juicy Couture and Steve Madden. I chose a Kathy Van Zeeland for only $39.99; I saw similar purses on sale at department stores for twice as much.

My purse is similar to the one at right, but with a little more bling.

The store also had freshwater pearls for $14.99 and holiday wrapping paper for $3.99 a roll.

So TJ Maxx's motto of "Economize don't Compromise" holds up. And some breaking news:I overheard store managers say they're putting out newer handbags on Saturday (Dec. 6). I just couldn't wait any longer. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Coupon ~ $5 off Honey Baked Ham

For all you recessionistas out there, a Honey-Baked ham might be out of the question, at $49.95 for a 6 pound ham.

Have you ever noticed when you go to use a department store coupon, it's not good for whatever it is that you are buying? Who has time to read all those teensy little letters?

Walgreens Coupon $5 off $25. Hurry, only good Tuesday

Sorry for the late posting, I had a few days off!!! Black Friday was a busy time for blogging! So many sales! I'd love to hear about your good deals. Did anyone find something they couldn't live without?

Here's a Walgreens coupon good for $5 off $25. And Ben & Jerry's ice cream is 'buy one get one' there this week. Bad for the diet, of course, but I only cheat when ice cream is on sale!!

These $5 coupons are great when you need the expensive stuff, like diapers. Sometimes I print a few, so I can stock up (not on diapers, heaven forbid!!). Last night I got a few Revlon beauty tools for stocking stuffers, they are 'buy one get one' this week also...and I used manufacturers coupons for $1 off each, that I saved from a Sunday Sun-Sentinel insert. I got some $10 items for $4 each. You can't beat that!!

Gossip Girl's Blake Lively's ring

You probably don't watch Gossip Girl. But betcha your teenagers are watching the perils of Serena, Blair, Chuck and the gang every Monday night at 8 p.m. on the CW. I'm not the demographic, but I just love these underparented, overfunded Upper East Side kids.

But I digress -- once again. Sorry. Anyhow, if you don't want to spend a fortune, but want to make your kids happy in their Gossip Girl fantasies, check out this link.

One of my fave items is Blake Lively's Sky Blue Cocktail Ring. It features an attractive smoky chalcedony blue hue surrounded by pale blue enamel. It contains small clear, aquamarine, and sky blue colored rhinestones in the enamel. And the cost is only $40.

Tell your own Gossip Girl that you wish her only blue skies like the ring. XOXO -- Shopper Girl

Christmas decorating

While many of you were hitting the malls this weekend, I was concentrating on our holiday decorations.

Have you decked your halls yet?

One of the places I go for inspiration and quality decor is Verzaal Farms in Boynton Beach. I learned about the place from my buddy, Glenn, who does the fab decorating at Fifth Avenue Grill in Delray Beach. (If you haven't seen their decorations yet, you must. Stop by for a drink at the bar and you'll think you were transported to a winter wonderland.)

Verzaal Farms didn't have the 3-foot-tall nutcracker I was seeking, but they do have some really great stuff like the tall candlesticks (about 32 inches) for $32 and $35, gorgeous wreaths for $50-$76.85 and a metal stand with four angels handing from a horizontal bar that is topped with four cups to hold votive candles for $36.75.

They also have a wonderful selection of pots -- $29.50 to $440 and tons of silk flowers. The greenhouses to the left of the main building are filled with poinsettias.

It is located at 5220 Flavor Pict Road in Boynton Beach.

Love this place and so will you.

XOXO -- Shopper Girl
