Closet organizing: How much should it cost?
If anyone needs her closet organized, it's me. I have literally lost items in my closet. Clothes or shoes I know I have vanish into the far reaches of my closet never to be found again.
Well, that's at least until I clean it. Guess it's time to wade through, weeding out my old clothes. No use hanging on to any piece of clothing I haven't worn in six months, maybe less. And, no, I won't ever fit into certain outfits again.
So I'm investigating closet organization systems, but I don't want to pay the price.
The Container Store in Hallandale Beach and Kendall is having a 30 percent sale on its Elfa system, but that closet system rangers in price from around $400 upwards to nearly $2,000 -- and that's on sale!
Ikea's closet system is another alternative, but also not inexpensive.
I'm going to start slow: throw items out first and then see where I'm at and what I need. Wish me luck. Meanwhile, if you have any great closet organizing ideas, post them. I suspect others have lost shoes in their closets as well. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

measure your space really well
Take a look at different types of closet systems as combining them might be a good use of space.
repurpose existing furniture to see if it can be used in the closet.
use exisitng systems in differnet ways--like mounting a vertical unit horizontally for "cubbies"
I have some more ideas on my website and profile a closet re-organization there.
original estimate for a custom closet was over $4000
Final bill came in under $1000
It is a large walk in closet.
I hope you can find some ideas there.

Hey Beverly, it sounds like you might have some great ideas, but you didn't leave a URL for your website. Can you add one, please.

Products: You might also want to check Target for some cost effective organizing products.
Process: Start with one shelf or drawer. Go through each item and decide if you're going to keep it (too small? too big? out of style? haven't worn it in a year?) Then sort what's left into categories (t-shirts, shorts, etc.). Then move on to the next shelf or drawer and repeat until the whole thing is empty. Look at the categories you made and how much is in each of them and then put them away accordingly (i.e. largest pile is of t-shirts so they get the shelf with the most height).
Hope this helps. :) My site also outlines this process.

Thanks Nealey, for your input. Your closet organizing suggestions inspired me to get started tonight. Only I can't empty my whole closet in one shift, I might do one rod at a time. My favorite part of your suggestions is "After a closet organization session, pick up some new items. It feels wonderful to add stylish purchases to your spacious closet, and you deserve it!"
