Michael Smith: White House Decorator for the Obamas
By now, you've probably heard Michael S. Smith has been given the honor of decorating the White House for the Obamas. So who is this guy anyway? His high-profile clients include Steven Spielberg, Rupert Murdoch and Cindy Crawford. Want to mimic Smith's look without his big ticket fee?
Check out his book, Michael S. Smith Houses (Rizzoli, $50), which shows his collection of unprententious interiors. The book is also full of advice and inspiration. (It's only $31.50 on amazon.com.)
You can also buy his look through his licensed products. He has designed three lines for Kohler's Kallista brand and a collection for Ann Sacks Tile. His other licensing agreements include Visual Comfort Lighting, Mansour Modern Rugs, Patterson, Flynn and Martin Carpeting, Samuel and Sons Passementrie and Agaria Home Fragrances.
It will be interesting to see what he does with his $100,000 fee -- chicken feed in his world of high design. Some folks speculate he may give the Obamas a taste of Ikea and Crate & Barrel. Isn't that a little too populist for the First Family?
