Michelle Obama not happy with Sasha and Malia Dolls
The creative folks who made Beanie Babies have created “Sweet Sasha” and “Marvelous Malia” dolls. They may be cute, but the First Lady is ticked off about the dark-skinned dolls that bear the names of the Obama girls. Maybe they have gotten too creative this time.
"We believe it is inappropriate to use young private citizens for marketing purposes," her spokeswoman told Crain's Chicago Business.
Ty Inc. released the dolls this month just in time for the Inauguration. The 12-inch plush dolls are part of the company's TyGirlz Collection. Pigtailed Sasha is wearing a white and pink dress with hearts. Malia sports a side ponytail and a long-sleeve shirt with capri pants. Suggested retail price is $9.99.
The manufacturer first admitted to Crain's that they were created with the First Daughters in mind, but later said they weren't created with anyone in mind. Hm....Looks like back pedaling to us. How about you?
Is this an invasion of the First Family's privacy or should the First Lady chill out? You tell us.

I totally agree with her. I wouldn't want dolls of my kids being sold without my permission.

Although the two girls are now very famous because of the job their father holds, I feel it is inappropriate to have dolls in their likeness, especially without the permission of the parents. I would not want my kids likenesses sold without permission. The company should either gain permission or take the dolls off the shelves.

Mrs. Obama, get over it, is what I have to say. The dolls look nothing like your girls and a name is a name you don't have a patten on the names, so TY can name those dolls whatever they want. You haven't been in the White house 72 hours and you are already trying to throw your weight around. This is America home of the free.

OMG I just seen on TV, they have a Chia Obama HAH HAH. That will be next on her list to be ticked off about HAH HAH

I agree. TY should have gotten permission prior to having the dolls on the market. The first lady is not throwing her weight around.

Mrs. Obama doesn't have to get over it! What they did is clearly wrong. If it was your not so famous child you would not like. Ty should immediately pull the dolls and any proceeds should be donated to a charity of the Obamas choice. If anything they should have come out with Bush dolls holding a can of beer in their hands. LOL!

Sounds like Opinions has issues about First Lady Obama. Hmm... must be Republican.

Hey, movie stars and sports figures get BIG BUCKS for having bobbleheads and t-shirts (and dolls) made in their image. Ty knows this. Even if the girls are celebrities/public figures by virtue of their family ties, you cannot use their images for commercial purposes without permission (and payment!) A Jonas Brothers doll or a Britney Spear doll would be illegal, and so is this.

I truly feel that the Obama family should have been consulted, afterall, there will be much conversation about the dolls and the Obama girls need to be enlightened also.

The folks who introduced the dolls are wrong. Now "all of sudden" they start marketing dolls, that happen to be pretty little black girls? What a coincidence? Do the "right thing" and get the permission of the parents. Simple as that.

Personally, i think that that the Obama family needs to relax. The dolls are cute and the only reason their dark-skinned is because the girls are dark-skinned. I doubt the girls want to be portrayed a white dolls. If they made a doll of Bush it woudl be white and dumb because thats wat he is. The first lady needs to ease up on the issue of the skin color if the dolls. But i do believe that the makers should have asked the parents permission to make dolls out of Malia and Sasha

Michelle Obama needs to truly get over it. Considering her own image resembling that of an Egyptian Pharoah, these dolls are going to help out charities, not her pocket book.

I think out of principle and at the request of the first lady and President Obama, this company should NOT be able to sell these dolls and any company carrying them should be ashamed of themselves. I think they have the right to sue companies that do no get permission to use their image to profit.
