Do you haggle?

More Americans are haggling with their favorite retailers to save money in the recession, according to a new article in Time magazine.

Recession Haggling

One master haggler noticed an expired date on bacon and ended up getting it for free, the magazine reports. When you see such opportunities to lower a price, ask for the manager in a nice way, said Time reporter Sean Gregory on NBC's Today show.

Sometimes, all you have to do is ask because stores are trying to get rid of inventory right now, he said.

What do you do to haggle? I know Super Saver Kathy is good at this. Tell us how you haggle by posting here.

I saved $30 on some golf clubs today! I just simply told the guy that I only had a certain amount of money to spend, and he couldn't turn down my hard-earned cash. Gotta haggle, people!

Saved $30 on golf clubs? Good for you!

Sometimes just balking accomplishes a lower price. I hesitated on the air filter replacement when I got my car's oil changed recently at Jiffy Lube and they knocked off $10.

I learned to be thrifty in my lean years as a single gal living on a teacher's salary. In the old days teachers were soooo underpaid...on occasion, I waitressed a few nights a week to make ends meet. Sad to say, I made more as a waitress back then.

I'm big on finding a coupon before I go anywhere, or a competitors coupon, but never thought about haggling with the manager.

Oh no....a whole new world of possibilities! I, too, am anxious to hear what our savvy readers have to say.

I haggle all the time.

Just yesterday we were in Home Depot and the DH wanted this piece of pipe for a "breaker bar" for a lug wrench. It was a cut off piece with no threads and the guy wanted to write the ticket for the $14.55 a foot the pipe was. I told him they discount the scrap lumber they should discount the scrap pipe too and we got it for $4.00.

Back at Christmas we got a tv, that was $100 more than the one we bought. We bought one, paid for it and then it wasn't in stock. Oh but we could come back and pick it up when they got it from another store. I told the guy, the one we bought should have been off the shelf if it wasn't in stock and they could refund the money or give us another one. The only one in the size we picked was $100 more and he gave it to us.

Hey, I'm not bashful!
