Coupons in Advance: Preview over $180 in coupons in Sunday's 10/18 Sun Sentinel
I'm back on track with the coupon preview, my wonderful vacation's over. I even added last week's to the list so it will be complete for your reference. There will be over $180 in coupons in Sundays paper. Click here to see the list.
Have a look at the list and help us come up with some savings scenarios. I can predict some free razors using the $2 Bic coupon, we'll watch for those sales, usually at CVS. The $1 Starbucks coupon will help those of us that are hooked on their coffee...watch for sales and use it then to maximize your coupon value.
I like the $1 off a Revlon tools coupon, use two when there's a buy-one-get-one-free sale. What we recommend is to get at least two sets of coupons and file them by the date they ran in the paper, then hold onto them until there is a good sale. Look for suggestions on Shop-O-Matic, both in our posts and in our smart shopping reader's comments.
Happy saving. --Super Saver Kathy

"The $1 Starbucks coupon will help those of us that are hooked on their coffee...watch for sales and use it then to maximize your coupon value." Umm no, a dollar is a dollar, whether you save a dollar on a $20 dollar item or a dollar on a $2 item it is still only a dollar.

Bistio - using two coupons when the coffee is on BOGO does indeed give you "more bang for your buck"

Thanks for adding last week's list as well. I do keep a database of coupons, and it's nice to have the list complete.

You're welcome Lynn. I hated that a week of active coupons would be missing, so I had to add them too.
Tell us about your database. How do you keep it, what sort of format?

Hi Bistio- Welcome, it's nice to hear from you. And nice for you to stimulate a discussion. We heard from Andrea, and how the coupon is worth more if you use two with a BOGO. I'd love to hear how others feel about this.
I think my brain works differently than Bistio. Bistio, you are totally right, a dollar is a dollar. But now that I'm maximizing coupons, I'm always doing math and calculations when I'm shopping, and my brain tells me that to save $1 on a $4 item is a higher percentage that to save $1 on a $6 item, even though it's still a dollar. $1 off $4 seems better than $1 off $6, no?
It's like the $5 off $25 coupons from CVS and Walgreens. I work long and hard to get my total as close to $25 as possible, and not a dollar over, because my percentage of savings is greater, the lower my total. Even though, as you say, it's still $5.
Let's here from you, what do you think?

Hi all! Does anyone know if the coupons I get from Sun Sentinel are the same as Palm Beach Post ? I thought that since they are two diff counties that the coupons would be diff. Also, if anyone knows if the inserts for Miami/Dade are the same or diff =) Thanks all!!!!!! BTW I am starting a coupon binder, wish me luck!!!! =)

Good luck - I also use a binfer :)
I think the coupons are slightly different... also I think the Palm Beach Post had stopped carrying the red plum. I stopped getting it after that - so I don't know if they put it back in. the Spanish version of the paper sometimes has extra coupons - last week they had a whole insert for knorrs sides for instance

A binder? Tell me, how does that work?-I still use the accordion file.

I use baseball card holders to organize the coupons and then I alphabetize - bread, butter, cereal, cheese, chips, cream, and so on...
I can take a picture...

Hi Bistio and Super Saver Kathy,
Here's how I think of it: $1 off $2 is 50% off, while $1 off $10 is only 10% off.
A good example: Office Max used to send me a $10 coupon for a minimum purchase of $10, that was a great deal. Now they've changed it to minimum purchase of $50: not so great.

Well said, Christie- My sentiments exactly!! Even though it's still a dollar, or ten dollars. Bistio? Let's hear your opinion?

That would be great Andrea! (A picture)

OK - I'll take some tomorrow and post a link

Andrea- Where do you buy your baseball card holders?
I did some research on storage for coupons, for a blog post I was going to write. Then I got transferred to Circulation where there isn't much time for blogging, so I nver posted that.
But my conclusion after the research was the the baseball card holder was the best way to keep your coupons if you clip them.
I hate to clip, I just store them in files by date and clip only what I need with my grocery list in hand.
But often you come home with coupons you didn't spend, and they are as good as lost if you don't have an organized filing system.
I'm thinking about using the coupons for Michaels of Joannes to get the card pages, but I haven't checked to see if the carry them at either place. Where else can you get them?

Regarding the database:
I created a spreadsheet in Excel. My columns include date and source (for example, 10/18/09 SS for today's Smart Source), amount, item, and expiration. I cut and paste your list into the item column, then add the info to the other columns. I do this because I deal with a huge amount of coupons - my DAR chapter is involved in the Overseas Coupon Project, so the members and my faculty donate their unused coupons and students at my school earn volunteer service hours for cutting and sorting the coupons. Last year we sent over $100,000 in coupons to our American military bases overseas. Keeping the database helps me organize the fliers and get the coupons out in a timely manner. So, again, thanks for providing the list.

I get the baseball card holders at Target.
I only clip the coupons I think I'd use with or without a sale.
Here's a group of pictures of my binder
http://tinyurl.com/couponbinder
Coupons that I'd only use if a sale came along I don't bother clipping. I put those in ziplocs and arrange them by date. The last picture in my flickr set is my unclipped coupons in the box I keep them in...
Posted by: Andrea | October 18, 2009 1:39 PM
I buy the pages on eBay. I like the 4x6 and the bill money sizes. Some use the 9 pocket baseball cards, but personally I think they are too small.
I clip all the coupons weekly. The ones that I know positively I will never use get left on the shelves at Publix. The rest get filed. I keep one binder that is an "active" binder so to speak. The other binder is usually high dollar type coupons in case I find something on clearance, need it for CVS etc. Just this evening Publix had Trident gum that is the 2 packs attached, clearanced at 50 cents. I knew I had $1.00/3 coupons in the car and ran out and got them. Got 30 packs of gum for like $2.50.
For the weekly ads, I pull my coupons ahead of time and put them in a separate envelope. I find it helps me not miss something I wanted to buy.
