From Business Online Community Manager Rebekah Monson:

I love Converse Chuck Taylors. I got my first pair in elementary school, and have always had a pair or two in my shoe rotation since. I wear them almost every day and everywhere, so when I see my favorite sneakers at the throwback elementary school price, I have to snag them.

6pm.com is offering the ubiquitous former basketball shoe at up to 50% off right now in a variety of styles and colors. This chocolate suede pair are just $29.95. Other styles are as low as $18.98.

Rooting for Team USA in these star-spangled pants

usapants2.jpg

This just in on the FIFA World Club fashion wire. After Landon Donovan's heart-stopping goal Wednesday in the USA's stunning win against Algeria, consider it your duty to wear these preposterously patriotic pants from Cordarounds.com while rooting for Team USA as it advances to the knockout round on Saturday.

The San Fransisco pant-maker offers these proudly-made-in-America, um, fashion statements for $90 and warns they are "for Americans only." The company also claims they're "lovingly hand-stitched by the spectral fingers of Betsy Ross' ghost" and are "tested for Nazi- and Communist-fighting durability by Captain America. They're also in full compliance with the Patriot Act, so you can wear them with pride. (The company swears they make flatulence smell like apple pie, too.) Seriously, how can you not get a pair?

Happy campers waiting for iPhone 4 at Galleria Mall's Apple store

iphonelin.jpg
Score!!!! And we're not talking World Cup goals here either!

I got my iPhone 4 this morning around 10 a.m. at the Apple store at the Galleria Mall.

I arrived at the mall in the wee hours of the night to wait with hundreds of others to get my new 32 GB smartphone and report on what was happening for the Sun Sentinel. It was jubilant insanity! There were hundreds of people waiting both inside and outside the mall with the line stretching deep into the parking garage. Many had coolers and lawn chairs. It made me wonder when the band was arriving.

Galleria management told me there were at least 1,200 people waiting by 7 a.m. Everyone was excited and happy.
dciphone4xxx.jpg

"I counted 160 in front of us," said Mark Salazar of Tamarac who arrived at 3:15 a.m. with his son Cory. "The alarm went off at 2 a.m. and here I am." His early arrival paid off as he was at the doors to the mall with hundreds in line behind him.

At exactly 7 a.m., clapping and cheering Apple Geniuses came romping through the mall whoopin' and hollerin' and getting the large crowd fired up for the big event. It seemed more like the celebration dinner on a cruise ship when they bring in the Baked Alaska than a retail event.

Apple employees quickly organized the long line into those who had pre-reservations and those who did not and then escorted those in the front to the a small holding ares in front of the store.

As we waited in line, an Apple employee previewed the lone accessory available, a black rubber bumper that goes around the outside edge of the phone for $29. Employees were not recommending screen protectors, but were pushing the iPhone AppleCare Protection Plan for $69 to protect the precious piece of hardware.

The delivery and set up for the phone took about 20 minutes and then my helper, Phillip, handed me off to Melissa to transfer my contacts.

I'm syncing as we speak.

I took awesome HD video at the event on my new phone. Alas, I erased it when I synced. I called Apple and we tried to get it back, but to no avail. Oh well. Plenty more video to shoot in the future!

Supercharge your phone with free Google Voice

Google has release its free Web-based platform Google Voice, a service that manages all your telephone communications. Think of it as a clearinghouse that consolidates all your phone numbers (cell, home, office) into a single number that puts you in full control of how, where and when yo get calls. It works with any type of phone and any carrier, even on the iPhone (more on that later). It had been in its testing phase (beta), offered by invitation only a little over a year ago.

You need a Google account to get the service.

Here's some of what it does:

- You get a single phone number that rings you anywhere.
- Online voice mail transcribes messages and delivers them to your e-mail inbox (how cool is that??)
- Free calls and text messages to the United States and Canada
- Block and screen your calls
- Sends SMS to e-mail

Click here to see a full overview of all its features and download it.

For instructions on using Google Voice on iPhone, visit m.google.com/voice in your mobile browser on your device. Read the InformationWeek report on using Google Voice for iPhones.

It's truly amazing.

Design your own shoes

I was in Miami last weekend and among the many new cool stores, restaurants and experiences I had, I discovered Morgan Miller Shoes.

The shoe store, on Lincoln Road Mall in Miami Beach, allows you to design your own shoes. It's a dream come true for shoe-a-holics like me. Pick your own base, strap and accessories. Choose a kitten heel, wedge, high heel or stiletto.

Design your own shoes at Morgan Miller Shoes.

Morgan Miller's only other stores is in Dubai, but stores also are planned for New York, Beverly Hills and Las Vegas.

Custom shoes don't come cheap. The one I designed would total $185, a bit more than I pay for shoes at my favorite outlet. Maybe for a special occasion.... -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Hot summer fragrances in travel-friendly containers for $10

VictoriaLive%20Pink%20Rollerball.jpg

Here’s a great way to wear hot summer fragrances, save some cash and be TSA-ready all at once. (The rules say 3.4 ounce, or 100 ml or smaller containers can go on planes.) Get the latest scents in travel-friendly rollerball applicators, pots of solid perfume and purse-size sprays. The best part? Most cost about $10 and you can throw them in your bag, breeze through security and land smelling like a rose.

Here are our top picks:

Life Is Pink Rollerball Fragrances, $10 , from Victoria’s Secre have real personality, with cute little charms and snappy names: Wish Pink, Live Pink and Hope Pink. We’re partial to Live’s bright and bold blend of passion fruit and raspberry nectar. Breaking news! A rep told the company is launching a fourth scent, Shine Pink, in July so stay tuned.

vanillaryx.jpg
Try all-natural Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics’ Vanillary Solid Perfume, $7.95, packaged in an awesome recycled aluminum tin about the size of a half-dollar. We like the light vanilla-jasmine scent, but the citrus notes in Olive Branch have us swooning too. There are seven scents all mixed into a base of nourishing jojoba oil and organic cocoa butter in .35-ounce pots.

Carry your favorite scent wherever you go with Sephora’s Refillable Rollerball. This $10 on-the-go metal dispenser comes with a tiny funnel that you use to pour in the fragrance. (Or how about the gorgeous pink Sephora Collection Diamond Handbag Atomizer on sale for $6).

Lavanila’s Healthy Roller Ball Fragrances, $19, will rub you the right way with yummy vanilla-based summer scents and 100 percent natural ingredients. That means they’re free of sulfates, parabens and a whole bunch of other nasty stuff. Best part: They’re infused with so many essential vitamins (C, E, B1, B2 and B6), minerals and amino acids that you might want to drink them. Seriously, they’re designed to nourish and condition your skin — and make you smell great. We like Vanilla Coconut, but Pure Vanilla and Vanilla Grapefruit are nice too.

Spritz on some spicy fabulosity with Coty’s new Baby Phat Dare Me by Kimora Lee Simmons. It comes in a .25-ounce metal spray bottle for $9.99 that we dare any baggage handler to try to destroy. If you’re heading to the shore, try Coty’s beachy Nautica My Voyage. Get them at drugstores.

Or, save even more and make a travel-ready scent yourself. Here's how:

Recipe: Make-It-Yourself Solid Perfume
Make your own travel-ready scent with just a few ingredients from your kitchen. A clean eye-cream jar or pretty pill box works well as a container.
1 small container with tight-fitting lid
1 tablespoon grated unscented beeswax

Free Temptu airbrush makeovers on Saturday at Sephora

Airbrushing%20Face.jpg

Attention Vogue covergirls! Get a free Temptu airbrush makeover and photo session at Sephora/Avenutra from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 19.

The fun kicks off with airbrushed models showing the picture-perfect results of airbrush makeup with the easy-to-use Temptu system. Next, you can get awesome-looking, too, with an airbrush makeup sesson and you'll also get a free Temptu Temporary Tattoo. After you're all flawless and inked, strike a pose, get your picture taken and the store will e-mail the photo to you.

It's going to be busy, so a store representative suggested making a reservation so you won't have to wait, but its not mandatory. There will be lots of makeup artists available to transform you, the rep. said.

The store is at 19575 Biscayne Blvd., Avenutra; 305-931-9579, #3 to get a reservation.

iPhone 4 goes on sale, but demand crashes Apple store

gallery03-20100607.jpg

UPDATE: This just in, thanks to my colleague, Peter Franceschina: If you already have an iPhone, download the Apple Store app and make a reservation for pickup in your local store on June 24. I just made my reservation for a 32 GB black model and got my order confirmation. The deal was done in under a minute.

Apple finally began taking orders on its website today, June 15, for the iPhone 4, but I've timed out at least eight times trying to order the phone on Apple.com. Both Apple and AT&T were paralyzed because of demand, reports the LA Times. By 11:30 a.m., the site was still not taking orders due to overwhelming demand for the new device. However, you can pre-order at brick and mortar Apple and AT&T stores, but waits are reported to be at least an hour long.

At 6 a.m., Apple.com was sending customers to a landing page saying it was busy updating the store. I got an "Oops" message a few times after clicking on the preorder link. Twitter is buzzing with frustrated and impatient customers (#applefail) over Apple's site being down.

I haven't have any luck ordering at ATT.com, either.

An Apple employee I spoke to at 10 p.m. Monday said Apple phone reps were expecting a press release at 6 a.m. informing them what time the new phone goes on sale. Nice to know Apple employees know as much as we do. The rep I spoke to suggested you sign up for e-mail notification.

Best Buy and Radio Shack stores will sell iPhone 4 on June 24, along with Apple and AT&T and all four companies are supposed to begin taking pre-orders today. Best Buy and Radio Shack announced via Twitter and Facebook late Monday night they would be taking pre-orders today. Radio Shack tweeted it will begin taking orders at 12 p.m. Central time. Best Buy has not announced what time it will take orders. Its site points to Apple.com, so it's unlikely you'll be able to get an order in with the big-box retailer, either.

Meanwhile, here's the scoop on the new phone:
Size: 16 or 32 GB
Price: $199 or $299
Colors: White or black; reports that no white phones are in stock
Features: HD video recording and editing; 5-megapixel camera with LED flash; 40 percent more battery life; highest-resolution phone screen over previous models and many other features.

Service: Here's news on AT&T pricing plans for iPhone 4 from our consumer columnist Daniel Vasquez.

SOFTWARE: If you're not planning to buy a new iPhone, you should still be excited. With the iOS4 update, you'll get more than 100 new features. Highlights include third-party apps, organize apps into folders with a drag-and-drop function, get a five-time digital zoom and get the new iBooks feature along with improved e-mail functions.

Stay tuned for hourly updates and also future posts on how to save on new iPhone 4 accessories.

Dad will rest easy at his next meeting with the Pillow Tie

big_how.png
LoorPurSil1.jpg
If your dad has to endure endless hours of meetings and business functions, give him a Father's Day gift he will really appreciate: the Pillow Tie.

A hilarious twist on the traditional gift, this good-looking silk-blended tie contains a PVC insert with a tiny valve on the underside that Dad can blow up in one breath and then get his 40 winks because, as the company's slogan goes, "Most functions that require a necktie...deserve to be slept through." The clip-on tie works great a church, too.

Once the gag's over, he can remove the PVD insert. Or not.

The ties sell for $19.95 at PillowTie.com. But I found them at Deals.eBay for $11.99 with free shipping. There are 30 styles to choose from.

Let's hope he doesn't snore too loudly.

Notable mousepad for Dad

mousepad.jpgHere's an interesting spin on the mousepad, on sale, for Father's Day: the notable mousepad.

It has a dry eraser surface that allows you to write again and again, for only $9.99 (usually $14.99). No more need to find pad and paper when you want to jot down that great item on Shop-o-matic.

The idea comes from: Quirky.

Other "Quirky" ideas include the PowerCurl, to wrap MacBook computer cords; and the Beamer, an iPhone case with a built-in LED light that can serve as a flash for taking a photo. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Explore the Final Frontier for free. NASA is offering a free DVD "Journey to the Stars," narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.

The DVD, funded by NASA's Heliophysics Division, began as a show produced and currently showing at the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The DVD explores the universe, showing giant stars, dwarf stars, exploding stars, neutron stars, and the sun using data from NASA spacecraft and theoretical models of modern science. Watch a video on the science behind the show.

Teachers can order up to 50 copies to give to students and also request companion lesson plans and activity sheets.

"We want every classroom in the country to have a copy," says Lika Guhathakurta of NASA's Heliophysics Division in Washington DC, on the NASA website. "Kids of all ages from K through 12 will enjoy the show — and never look at the night sky the same way again."

Dad can party on with these fun Father's Day gifts

rc-cooler%5B1%5D.jpg
coolerklub1%5B1%5D.jpg

Forget the tie and the shirt for Father's Day on June 20. Here's a few gift ideas Dad can use to get the party started.

How many times has Dad asked you to get him a beer? Well, this Remote Control Cooler from Sharper Image will bring him a cold one (it holds a 12 pack) and he'll never have to leave the recliner. It's soft-sided and collapsible so it stores easy. It's $49.99, batteries and beer not included. Click here to see a hilarious video demonstration.

Score a hole in one with the Designated Driver Kooler Klub from After5.com. Tucked in his golf bag, this above-par drink dispenser is disguised as a golf club and holds 48 ounces of cold or hot beverages for $49.99. After a couple of shots, maybe he'll finally land it on the fairway. See it in action here.

He'll arrive in style on the Motorized Cooler from BaronBob.com. It's a little pricey at $1,895, but he'll have the most tricked-out 6.5 horsepower Coleman in the neighborhood.

crusincoolerside2-2009%5B1%5D.jpg
What dad wouldn't love a talking Homer Simpson beer bottle opener? Pop off a cap and Homer says "Mmmmmm.....Beer." Perhaps he'd like a Three Stooges or Family Guy opener. From NASCAR to NFL to MLB, this site has cornered the market on talking bottler openers. They're $8.95 at TalkingBottleOpener.com.

31JdLxREIeL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Put his favorite scotch on the rocks with Whiskey Stones. These Vermont soapstone cubes won't water down his spirits. Pop them in the freezer, then use them in place of ice in a highball glass. A set of nine is $19.95 at Sur la Table locations in Coconut Creek, Pembroke Pines and Palm Beach Gardens and at SurlaTable.com.

Ok, I'd say Dad's drunk enough for now. Cheers!

Caslon T-shirts at Nordstrom, $11.90-$15.90

Summer T-shirts wear out fast so when I see quality cotton blend shirts on sale, I like to stock up.

This weekend, I found Caslon T-shirts at Nordstrom's Boca Raton half-yearly sale for women, only $11.90-$15.90. There's a variety of styles and colors: three-quarter length sleeves, cap sleeves and ribbed tanks in aqua blue, hot pink, army green, and deep purple.

Lots of other items at decent prices as well so bargain shoppers should not write off Nordstrom's, especially during its half-yearly sale.

Shopping at Nordstrom's also comes with the perk of helpful and friendly sales people. I bought one of the T-shirts for my friend and fellow shopping blogger Kathy and asked for a box. The saleswoman wrapped the shirt in tissue, placed it in a silver box and finished off with a bow. Such service makes shopping so much more fun. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Free admission to Flagler Museum on Saturday

home_museum_facade%5B1%5D.jpg

Get free admission to the Flagler Museum on Saturday, June 5, in honor of Henry Flagler and his granddaughter Jean Flagler Matthews. Admission is normally $18 for adults and $10 for children.

The 60,000 square foot, 55-room mansion was built by Flagler as a wedding gift to his bride in 1902. Used as a winter retreat, it established the Palm Beach playground for the wealthy during the Guilded Age. Jean Flagler Matthews rescued the estate from demolition and established the museum on June 5, 1959.

Visitors can view an extensive collection of original art, furniture, and historic objects related to life during the period. There also are special exhibits on Florida history and Flagler’s impact on the region with devleopment of the East Coast Railway, paving the way for tourism and agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy. Read a biography of Henry Flagler.

The museum is located at One Whitehall Way in Palm Beach. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information go to FlaglerMuseum.us or call 561-655-2833.

Nearly 2,700 people attended the event in 2009, according to the museum's website.

Amazon's Kindle available at Target

Kindle%20at%20Target.jpgWant to check out a Kindle before you consider buying it for $259? You can now do that at Target, which is selling them nationwide as of June 6. You can already find them in South Florida's Target.

Tartget at 3200 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale and 650 N. Congress Avenue in Boynton Beach both already have the Kindle for sale.

Amazon's e-reader has some competition these days: Barnes & Noble's Nook and Apple's iPad, which does more than download books. But my sister and other friends who are big readers love the Kindle.

Amazon is pitching it as a Father's Day gift. Not a bad idea if your Dad likes to read. It's also a good gift for people who travel.
