Landau earrings 50% off

Landau%20earrings.jpgThe 80% off sign caught my eye at Landau Jewelry, located in the Town Center mall at Boca Raton.

The best deal, though, is the 50% off the "Diamondess" collection: the jewelry is sterling silver and platinum plated. These aren't real diamonds, but you could fool me -- gorgeous sparkle and color.

Moreover, you get a $100 gift certificate for the store for every 50% purchase you make. If you have a special friend's birthday coming up or starting early for Christmas, this is a great deal.

At 50% off, 2-carat studs are $74.50, for example.

Print out Walgreens coupon policy

We've had some interesting discussions on this blog about store policies for shopping with coupons. Thanks to Common Sense with Money, I'm posting the Walgreens coupon policy here.

The liveliest discussions always revolve around buy one get one free items and coupons. Here's what they say about those, "When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased."

Where's Alexander when we need him? Oh Aleeexxx??? Where are you....????

Download best-selling audio, e-books from the library for free

eatpraylove.jpg

%7BC4655F49-0411-4280-B8A3-3D0A1D8FA396%7DImg200.jpg

You don't have to spend your hard-earned money on the latest best-selling audio and electronic books from Amazon.com or other online book sellers. Borrow them for free from the county library.

Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties all have virtual libraries with popular titles like Kathryn Stockett's "The Help," Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" and Justin Halpern's "Sh*t My Dad Says." The best part: You don't even have to leave your house and there's never a late fee.

"You can download popular e-books and audio books to most portable devices, 24/7" said Kathy Olsen, collection management coordinator at the Broward County Main Library. "We have 2,863 unique titles/formats and 3,931 total copies." Olsen says the program's been running since 2006 and users are increasing.

"The circulation has been gradually rising, but this past month, when we increased the number of copies of popular titles, the usage jumped from 622 in June to 2,577 in July. We monitor the holds and buy additional copies or formats when necessary."

With a library card and a few easy steps, you can download the free OverDrive software and check out up to 10 titles for 21 days onto laptops and desktop computers, iPhones, iPads, iPods, smartphones, MP3 players and some models of e-readers.

The guided tour of the virtual library explains how to install the software, browse the extensive catalog (including references) and check out material.

According to an OverDrive.com representative, you can listen to (not read) audio books on all Apple devices including the iPad and iPhone 4, most smart phones (including Droid, Blackberry and Palm). You can read titles on Sony and Barnes & Noble e-readers and on PCs and Mac laptops and desktops. Click here to see if your device is supported. An iPad app is coming soon that will let you read the books, the rep said.

If they're available, you can check books out immediately and create a wish list for already checked-out titles. Books are automatically removed from your cart when they're due back in 21 days so the next person in line can use them.

Browse titles in the virtual libraries of Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Have your library card handy. Or apply for one at any branch or online.

Do the Math: Savings on graphing calculators

0007976718605_215X215.jpg

If you have to purchase an exam-approved graphing calculator for your student, you're probably going to experience sticker shock. They can run as much as $150.

Here's a few ways to save and look like a math genius:

New: Walmart has a an advanced function, exam approved Casio Graphing Calculator for $48.93. Make sure the calculator has USB port (this one does), which is important. Some cheaper models on the market don't have one. You're not going to do better than this price for a new device. Shipping is 97 cents.

Apps: Download the top-rated Graphing Calculator by Gabor Nagy App for iPod, iPad and iPhone from iTunes for $1.99. It was just updated at the end of July. Your student may not be able to use this during an exam or in class (check with your child's teacher on the school's policy), but its more convenient to tote around than the big, clunky device.

Coupon Chaos or Couponing 101

coupons1.JPGLast week Clarisse wrote to ask for help getting supplies for her brother stationed in Afghanistan. Grateful to our sons and daughters for serving our country, my first reaction might be to take up a collection and send him the items on his list.

Second reaction: Lets make this a coupon lesson, and teach Clarisse how to shop with coupons. This will be a lesson for all of you wishing to learn, "What is all the hype about coupon shopping?"

First, Clarisse, start saving two of each coupon insert from your Sunday papers. I happen to know you work, so you probably won't have time to clip and organize, just file them away by the date they ran in the paper.

Next, register at all the stores in your shopping area. Get a CVS Extra Care Card, register at Winn-Dixie, get on Albertson's mailing list. These memberships make you eligible for extra savings, as well as coupons and offers by mail or email. Anytime you see store coupons, grab two copies, to combine with your manufacturers coupons. Always visit the coupon kiosks to look for anything new, they go fast.

Your list is mostly basic items that are often on sale and often have coupon match-ups. Here is your list: "Gillette Razors, Shaving Cream, toothpaste, mouthwash, Palmers Coco Butter, Dove Body Wash, Old Spice Deoderant, baby wipes, baby powder, tropical trail mix, and fig newtons." You also said, "I looked up these items online at Walmart and I estimated that it would cost me about 73 dollars, and that does not include shipping.... Help Please."

Now, just remember that sales change often so after you do your research, you must act fast. Publix sales start Thursday, Winn-Dixie's Wednesday, and CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Albertsons and Target sales start Sunday and last the week.

Since this post is already long enough, it will take forever to post each item and the available sales, so I'm going to ask our readers, our dear readers, to help us find the sales and coupon match ups for these items. We will look for store sales, BOGOs (buy one get one free), store coupons combined with manufacturer coupons, etc. Below you will see some of the online sites you can use for research.

Clarisse, I'll get a few coupons to you to get you started. --Super Saver Kathy

Rightcliq by Visa gets it wrong

A big, fancy press release announcing Rightcliq by Visa came across my desk today. The new service by the credit-card giant proclaims "Web shopping finally pulls itself together."

irqmages.jpeg

So, I take the time to go to the site. I am a shopping blogger, after all. I watch the slick video. And then I press the big yellow ENROLL NOW button.

The self-proclaimed "personal shopping assistant" helps me by giving me a big, fat "SORRY!" message saying "Rightcliq doesn't support your browser." (Safari.) It then begins making alternate browser suggestions. Seriously? I'm going to install a new browser...so Visa can help me shop smarter and better?

Lots of bucks were spent on telling me (and you) how this new, free, online shopping tool is going to "revolutionize the shopping experience from browse, to buy to delivery on your doorstep." But Visa's "Smarter Online Shopping" service's failure to launch, literally, left me underwhelmed.

So, see ya Rightcliq. Maybe you'll get it right, next time.

Comic Latin plant markers grow on you

latinplantmarkers.JPG

Add a little humor to the soil with these hilarious and witty Comic Latin plant markers. I ran across them recently in a shop while vacationing in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Made in Canada, the stoneware markers come in 12 funny sayings. My faves: "Peakus Lastweekus" and "Costa Fortunii." Other fun sayings: "Weedis Victorious," "Weeda Non Grata," "Insectum Devorum" and "Itsa Whatsit."

I bought two for $11 each in the shop, but found them online for $7.50 each at GreenThumbsGalore.com.

Ann Taylor Loft capris, tops, dresses on clearance

Ann%20Taylor%20pants.jpgOne of my favorite spots in Sawgrass Mall in Sunrise is the back room of the Ann Taylor Loft store. When the store has a clearance sale, it really has a clearance sale.

"It has been marked down four times," a store associate told me.

And yet, there items worth buying. My friend E and I did a little retail therapy on Saturday and walked away with quite a few items for little money. I bought two pairs of capris, both dressy enough to wear to work, and a ruffled top for less than $80.

You could find a few items online at Ann Taylor Loft, but there's a much better selection at the outlet store at Sawgrass Mall. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds
