Cyber Monday: Rebate websites offer cash back for online purchases

ebates.gif

Since Cyber Monday is the biggest online purchasing day of the year, consider using a cash-back websites such as EBates.com, ShopAtHome.com or FatWallet.com to get percentages of your purchases back.

These free online services offers rebates at thousands of stores, collect your savings into an account and then send you a check. Many of the sites immediately deposit $5 into your account when you sign up (get a $10 Home Depot gift card from EBates now) and also offer other cash incentives when you refer friends.

Typical rebates offered by EBates.com are six percent back on purchases at JC Penney and Kohls, five percent back from Macy's, two percent for Walmart and three percent back from Groupon.com.

SAH_logo.gif

I use EBates.com all the time when I shop online. Every once in a while I get a "Big Fat Check" in the mail. It's convenient and easy and once you get a check in the mail, you're hooked. I have received rebate checks for hundreds of dollars for buying things I was going to buy anyway.

Here's how EBates.com works: Register with an e-mail address, click through retailers listed on the site (Macy's, Walmart, iTunes, Sears, Barnes & Noble, Target, etc.). When you make a purchase, a percentage of the sale is posted into your EBates account after you checkout. After the money collects, you request a check (up to four times a year) or the money can be transferred into a Pay Pal account. The site has paid out over $50 million in cash to members, according to its website.

fatwallet.jpg.png

The site also offers deals of the day and coupons and sometimes can be combined with the rebate offered. If you refer friends, Ebates.com gives you and your friends $5. There also are “Featured Coupons.”

The sites fund the rebates by offering you a portion of the affiliate commissions, or revenues, generated from referring you to online merchants.

Fatwallet.com offers coupons, deals and rebates from more than 1,000 stores, typically offering from one to 40 percent back on purchases. Rebates have totaled $29 million, according to its website.

ShopAtHome.com offers rebates as well as coupons for groceries and restaurants, free samples and even has a free shipping section. The site has 50,000 affiliate stores and offers 1,200 coupons. According to its website, its members have earned more than $50 million in cash back.

Ten to Spend: Vintage humor gifts by Anne Taintor

01464.jpg

"Ten to Spend" is a special holiday shopping feature designed to help you save time and money during the busy gift-giving season.

'Tis the season give your best girlfriend a gift that will make her crack up every time she uses it. We promise she'll flip for a gift featuring one of Anne Taintor's feminist femme fatales.

Taintor's hilarious merchandise uses vintage images of real women, known as Taintorettes, that modeled for advertisements in the 1930s, '40s and '50s, and pairs them with irreverent and witty captions of what they really might have been saying.

01422.jpg
Choose mini-notebooks, ($6), coin purses ($10); pill boxes ($10); sticky notes ($4.50); paper drink coasters (($6); luggage tags ($9) names just a few in he under-$10 category.

Here's a few of our faves, but seriously, they're all so wonderful it's a tough job to choose:

"You be Thelma. I'll be Louise"
"high maintenance" doesn't even begin to cover it"
"she could never remember which was better...safe?...or sorry?"
"stop me before I volunteer again"
01372.gif"I don't suffer fools gladly...but I do gladly make fools suffer"
"and to think that I'm only using one-tenth of my brain!"
"so...how does a bombshell like me get through security" (luggage tag)
I'll take mind-numbing chores over a fulfilling career any day!

There are loads more captions available on one item or another.

Top 10 tips to scoring hot Black Friday deals around South Florida

shopping-logo-tss.jpg

Preparation is the key to getting your hot little hands on the best Black Friday deals.

Here's our Top 10 Tips on how to score:

1. Make your list: Make a list of all the items you know you need to purchase. Know what you want to buy and then seek out the best deals. Rank them in order of importance -- and savings.

2. Be prepared: Check all the circulars in the Thanksgiving edition of the Sun Sentinel. This is the biggest newspaper of the year and it's also the most convenient way to see what's being offered where and at what price. Compile the ads with the items you want to buy and take the ads with you to the stores. Walmart is price matching right at the register. No proof, no price reductions.

3. Go online: Next, check retailers websites for items on your list for pricing, quantity and special offers and to get other information about hours, shipping and more. We have a handy list of South Florida mall hours.

4. Decide where you're going: Based on your research, plan which malls and/or stores you're going to hit first and then check hours. Tip: South Florida malls and retailers' Macy's and Kohl's are offering savings passes with additional money off. If you're shopping at one of those stores, print out the passes and add them to your circulars.

6. Cook & shop: Many retailers are holding online Thanksgiving days sales. Put down the spoon and grab the mouse to see if anything on your list is available on Turkey day. Also, many stores are open on Thanksgiving this year.

6. Stay up, sleep in: See if the items on your list will be offered online at midnight on Black Friday if you don't want to head out at the crack of dawn. Many retailers, like Lowe's, are offering the same deals online as in the stores beginning at midnight on Friday, making a trip to the store needless.

7. Use your smart phone: Your mobile phone can be an invaluable way to save. Download a shopping app. Check out Daniel Vasquez's Consumer Talk blog on the best ways to use your smart phone to shop and save. Also, use social media like Facebook and Twitter to help find the best deals.

8. Visit Black Friday sites: BlackFriday2010.com, FatWallet.com/Black-Friday and SlickDeals.net/BlackFriday are three of the best.

9. Online rebates: If you do purchase online, use cash-back sites like EBates.com, FatWallet.com, ShopatHome.com and others to get percentages off your purchase deposited into an account. The sites then send you a check.

10. Have fun and be courteous! Heading out in the wee hours to shop on Black Friday is an adventure. I'll be at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise at 4 a.m. on assignment for the paper. Share your scores and finds with us on Twitter using hastag #sflblackfriday!

Contemporary menorahs will light up your holidays

t_17370.jpg
Hanukkah is careening toward us, coming early this year on Dec. 2. If you are in the market for a hip looking, modern menorah, we have a few suggestion that will light up your room for the Festival of Lights. These are definitely not your mother's menorahs.

The lovely Skyline Menorah by Jonathan Adler, top right, is made of polished nickel and is 10.5 X 8.75 inches wide. Get it for $125.

The hand-painted ceramic Muzeum Menorah from Target.com is $49.99 and echos Picasso. It's 12 x 6 inches with brass inserts to hold candles.

These nine glass cubes, below right, are cool as ice and offer a refreshing twist on the traditional Hanukkah lamp. They come with 45 colorful candles. Get them from Shop.TheJewishMuseum.org for $24.

candles.jpg
This menorah grows each night as you arrange the individual leaves of the Sabra Haukkah Menorah from CanaanOnlie.com. Made of aluminum, the "leaves" are fashioned after the Sabra, or Israeli Prickly Pear, which is tough on the outside and sweet on the inside. It's $99.95.

Get Rite Lite's Premium Hand-Dipped Chanukah Candles at BedBathandBeyond.com for $9.99.
The high-quality candles with lead-free wicks burn for more than one hour. There are 45 candles per box. Don't forget your 20 percent off coupon!

Get $15 in Kellogg's Mini-Wheats Class Action Settlement

Kellogg_Frosted_Mini_Wheats.jpg

Recover up to $15 if you purchased Kellogg’s Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal between Jan. 28, 2008 and Oct. 1, 2009 as a Class Member in a settlement reached with the cereal company over false advertising. The actual amount a Class Member receives will depend on the number of claims made.

The lawsuit is over Kellogg's claim that its Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal improved kids’ attentiveness, memory and other cognitive functions to a degree not supported by competent clinical evidence. Kellogg denies it did anything wrong.

And now you get $15. Is this a great country or WHAT?

Under the terms of the settlement, Kellogg agreed to change its advertising and will create a fund to pay claims of $2.75 million and to distribute to charities that provide food to the indigent $5.5 million in Kellogg food items.

Visit CerealSettlement.com website for more information and to make a claim. It must be completed and either submitted online or postmarked by June 3, 2011.

The perfect Thanksgiving dish: Canned Unicorn Meat

e5a7_canned_unicorn_meat.jpg

If you're wondering what to bring to that Thanksgiving feast, look no further than a can of Unicorn Meat from Radiant Farms.

This tasty treat is 14-ounces of sparkly meat with magic in every bite. It's imported from a small cannery in County Meath, Ireland where the Sisters of Radiant Farms massage the unicorns' coats with Guinness each day and fatten them up on diet of candy corn. As a result, the meat
tasts like chicken with a hint of marshmallow.

In the interest of full disclosure, it's actually a dismembered stuffed unicorn in a can and isn't tasty at all. But it is deliciously fun.

Get it at ThinkGeek.com for $11.99.

Since I don't want to hog all the Shop-O-Matic real estate, after years of writing this blog and scouring the planet for coupons and deals for our readers, I can tell you that saving like that requires prep time and organizational skills. And a lot of coupons!

One trick is to find the coupons. Where do you get your $5 off $50 coupons? Where do you find your store coupons that stack with manufacturers coupons? Do you surf the Internet for printable coupons, join manufacturers' facebook groups, and email your favorite brands?

Share with us your tips on fattening that coupon stash. Happy shopping. --Super Saver Kathy

One factor is they're on sale at Big Lots! for as little as $25 for a 6-foot pre-lit artificial tree. The 7-foot pre-lit trees run $49.

To get in the holiday mood, I picked up a package of Christmas wrap with matching bows and ribbon -- only $7. There are also wreaths, Christmas lights of all kinds, decorative pillows and tableware.

The best selection no doubt is right now so don't wait until Christmas Eve to go to a Big Lots! near you.

Gap gives away 10,000 free pairs of jeans on Friday through Facebook Places

gap-jeans.jpg

Gap is giving away 10,000 pairs of free jeans or offering a 40 percent discount on Friday through a Facebook event.

From 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, Gap is giving away the jeans through Facebook Places which is Facebook's answer to FourSquare. The cool thing about Places is that you can get great deals and offers from retailers.

So turn on the feature in Facebook (you know you haven't done it), check-in at the Gap, show an employee your check-in and you could score the free threads. If you don't get the jeans, they'll give you 40 percent off any regularly priced item. So far, ther are less than 5,000 attending the event, so I'd say if you do it, your chances of grabbing a freebie are pretty good.

Other offers planned in the coming weeks:

Find a holiday shoe and then find a deal

Stuart%20Weitzman%20glitter%20pumps.jpgThe holidays call for glitter.

This "Swoon" Glitter pump from Stuart Weitzman is new the holidays and gorgeous. If you can afford, $335 for the designer shoe at Bloomingdale's, go for it.

But if you're on a budget like me, pick a shoe you like for the holidays and then shop around at more affordable venues.

This sparkly pump by N.Y.L.A. Karlie is on clearance for $39.94 at DSW, for example. DWS%20sparkly%20pump.jpg

Remember that a little glitter goes a long way so if you choose a sparkly pump, you should wear a black dress with accent jewelry. A sequin dress with glitter pumps should be reserved for Lady Gaga.

Coupon Chaos: Tell us where you are saving this week

coupons1.JPGWelcome to Coupon Chaos, where our readers post their best ideas for saving on our weekly shopping!

We are slipping, Halloween came and went, and we never discussed candy sales. But now is the time to get your kiddies costumes for next year. They are on sale everywhere. See any good ones?

I must confess, I am guilty of a 'no-no' for serious coupon shoppers. And it's going to cost me! Last night, alas, I used the last of my dishwasher detergent. A serious coupon shopper would have stocked up, during a good sale, long before running out. Unless I wash by hand until the next sale//coupon match up, chances are I'll pay retail. Or retail minus one measly coupon. Let that be a lesson to ya...
