Today's going to be gorgeous out so why not spend some time outdoors plucking tomatoes and strawberries right out of the field or cutting yourself a cheerful bouqet of orange and yellow sunflowers at Bedner's Farm in Boynton Beach.
Besides offering U-pick, this 80-acre working farm grows most everything showcased in its newly built, clean and bright Farm Fresh Market. Fruit and veggies come right out of the fields out back and go into your basket and then onto your table. The Bedner's also offer tractor rides, homemade ice cream and hot-off-the-grill BBQ on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays, too.
There were plants, geraniums, herbs and orchids for sale for an amazing four for $20, too.
Bedner Farms is a special place, one of the few family farms in operation in South Florida. Let the kids get acquainted with farm life and kick up their heels playing on the wide lawn while you chow on lunch from Porky & Beth's BBQ that you can enjoy in the new 2,000-square-foot Tiki hut.
I had the pleasure of meeting Charlie, Steve and Bruce Bedner yesterday. Charlie showed me the 10 acres of strawberries and plucked gorgeous vine-ripeded tomatoes right off the plant and cut me a giant sunflower, too. There are two sunny varieties growing in a wide field that's sure to put a smile on your face.
Market hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The fields are closed on Tuesdays. They offer field trips, too.
Bedner Farm is located at 12033 State Road 7 in Boynton Beach. The tomato field is open but the strawberries are ripening and may not be ready. Call 561-733-5490 for U-pick availability.
