Miramar-based Spirit Airlines is passing FAA air tax savings along to its customers and JetBlue is offering refunds, in certain instances after Congress failed to keep the Federal Aviation Administration running on Friday.

The expiration of federal excise taxes created a tax holiday that could have saved consumers up to $25 on a $300 fares, according to news reports. But most airlines instead chose to raise fares by more than 7 percent and keep the tax money, with the exception of Spirit, Frontier, Virgin and Alaska Airlines.

In an e-mail on Saturday, Spirit said it was passing along customers' share of $200 million per week in tax savings, inviting them to book fares and save up to $50 per ticket, in some instances. The airline also is encouraging customers to contact their representatives in Congress and urge lawmakers to reauthorize the FAA.

Meanwhile, JetBlue is offering to refund, in some instances, the air tax.
In a Travel Alert posted Friday evening on the JetBlue website, the airline offers to refund air taxes for travel booked before Saturday, July 23. The alerts instruct customers to e-mail the company to request a refund for travel scheduled through Friday, July 29:

According to the alert: "If you are scheduled to travel with us within the next seven (7) days, and would like to request a refund on the recently expired taxes, please email us at dearjetblue@jetblue.com with your name and confirmation number. Please also include "Expired Tax Refund Request" in the subject line of your email. We will then process your request in the order in which it was received based on the guidance provided by the Federal Government."

Pro tips: “Always apply waterproof liner (or other waterproof products) to bare, clean eyes and skin, which means no moisturizer, no eye cream, no eye shadow, nothing,” Castellanos says. "Use sunscreen, or moisturizer after you apply the waterproof makeup. You can apply the liner over other waterproof products, like our Aqua cream. Just be sure the first product is dry."

"Aqua Liner has 50 percent more polymers than the average brand, so be sure to shake well to mix them up. The polymers give it flexibility and comfort. It's great for contact lens wearers."

Get it straight: “Divide the eye into three parts; begin by applying liner in the center first, establishing the thickness of the line. Next, at the outer corner, draw the tail in a 90-degree line from the top down to the outer corner and connect to the center line and fill it in. Finish by connecting the center line to the inside corner of the lid, let dry for two minutes, then add shadow and mascara to complete the look,” Castellanos says. "Don't be afraid! Just keep a few Q-tips handy to quickly correct mistakes."

Just like that, you’re at cat!

RATING: Aqua Liner gets a 10 from our Pretty Good Idea testers who found the applicator brush helps in a smooth application. One contact-lens wearer who isn't usually able to comfortably tolerate eyeliner gave it rave reviews, too.

Walmart has introduced the "Great Gas Rollback" fuel-savings program where customers can save 10 cents a gallon on gas and diesel at South Florida Murphy USA stations located in Pompano Beach, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach and Hialeah and at a number of filling stations in Central Florida, too. The program is being offers in 19 other states.

Buy the fuel with a Walmart credit card and receive a 10-cent-a-gallon rebate. Use a reloadable Walmart gift card or MoneyCard and get a 5-cent-a-gallon discount.

If you're in need of a new refrigerator, washer/dryer or TV this summer, you're in luck. South Florida retailers are turning up the heat on competition.

Sears has a 15 percent sale on its Kenmore-brand refrigerators, washers and dryers -- plus 10 percent of Whirlpool and KitchenAid appliances, through Saturday, July 16. Sears also is planning a "big price drop" promotion, targeting South Florida stores, through Labor Day weekend, according to an email from Euro RSCG Worldwide PR.

Meanwhile, newcomer hhgregg is holding "grand openings" of its nine South Florida stores at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 14. Hhgregg is opening stores in Fort Lauderdale, Plantation, Pembroke Pines, Boca Raton, Wellington, West Palm Beach, Aventura, Hialeah and Miami.

A visitor to hhgregg's Boca Raton store, at 20841 State Rd. 7, tells me the store is offering special opening prices.

Best Buy has Frigidare refrigerators on sale and offering 15 percent on washer/dryer pairs.

And you always want to check BrandsMart USA, which is currently holding its "Christmas in July" sale on items including appliances.

Remember to shop around, especially before investing hundreds or even thousands of dollars in an appliance. And some competitors will match prices so if you find a model you like at one store, but the price is better at another -- that's worth a try.

Cinemark Theatres are conjuring up a Harry Potter marathon on Wednesday and Thursday for $38 in Boca Raton, Davie and Orlando. Or, see a special double feature of "Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2" on Thursday.

MARATHON: See all eight movies (screening in 2D, 3D and XD) back-to-back on the silver screen beginning Wedneday and finishing up with a 12:01 a.m. Friday showing of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II" at Cinemark Palace 20 in Boca Raton, Cinemark Paradise 24 in Davie and Cinemark Festival Bay Mall in Orlando.

Hitch a "ride" to the International Space Station and get a free commemorative flight certificate when space shuttle Atlantis blasts off, scheduled for lift off at 11:35 a.m. on Friday, July 8, compliments of NASA's "Face in Space" program.

NASA will launch your name and/or uploaded photograph on the historic final mission of Atlantis STS-135, which is the 135th and final mission of the shuttle program.

Did you know the first iPhone is flying in space on this mission? Makes you wonder if the crew with have some Facetime in Space?

After the launch, check back after July 20 to get a commemorative flight certificate signed by mission commander Chris Ferguson.

After you upload your photo, it appears in the shuttle's window and then a countown begins and an animated liftoff occurs. After the "launch" a certificate appears that you can print with the link to get the signed certificate.

While on the site, check on misssion status, view photographs, space out watching NASA TV, even follow the commander and crews on Facebook and Twitter.

Nintendo is offering free Wii remote video controller jackets to customers who own the popular video game console. The jackets cost $3.25 each in the Nintendo store.

Nintendo includes the jackets in boxes of new hardware but will give them to Wii owners who purchased systems prior to this addition.

Dillard's in Boynton Beach has everything in the store on sale this July 4th weekend, with most items 20 percent or 30 percent off. This includes aisles and aisles of shoes; jewelry, handbags, women's clothing and many other items.

"Everything must go," one sign says, referring to an "inventory clearance." Here's a Kate Landry clutch for only $22.75.
