Appliance rebates: Apply for waiting list in Broward; Miami-Dade still has $40K
UPDATE: In Broward County, roughly 1,500 pre-registration slots for appliance rebates were snapped up by 3 p.m. Monday, but the county is encouraging residents still interested in getting money back to get on the rebate waiting list. "Just because all the slots are filled doesn't mean those who pre-registered are going to make a purchase and then make an application," said Mital Hall, natural resources specialist for Broward County's Energy and Sustainability Program. "Funds could still open up, so it is worthwhile to get on the waiting list." Hall said some of the $100,000 rebate money for small business is still available and that the county will decide what to do with that money if it has not been requested by the deadline. It may be reallocated to residents, she said.
As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, Miami-Dade County still had $40,000 in funds available, said Maribel Balbin, assistant sustainability program manager for Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade will also be putting names on a waiting list when pre-registration closes, she said.

Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti collars coupon crooks using Facebook.com
Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti is no "friend" to coupon-clipping criminals.
The social-networking-savvy sheriff collars crooks a with computer mouse in one hand, and a gun and badge in the other.
Sheriff Lamberti used his personal Facebook page to catch a Davie couple clipping coupons in the extreme, admitting to deputies they stole 25 Sunday coupon inserts from SunSentinel and Miami Herald vending machines in three different locations.
"I got the initial complaint on my Facebook page," Lamberti said. "Someone sent me a message and said “I can’t believe this. I spent $1.25 for the paper and got home to find that I had been ripped off and the coupons were gone. Can you do something about this?"
So Lamberti, above right in his Facebook profile picture, sprung into action, putting this message out to nearly 5,000 friends on Aug. 21 at 6:23 a.m.:
"Al Lamberti has received a number of private messages about coupon theft from the Sunday paper. I didn't realize this is becoming a major problem in a tough economy. An Internet search reveals that this "quality of life" crime has been sparked by extreme couponing and the very slim possibility of arrest for stealing. Thoughts anyone? Have a great day."
The sheriff said he got quite a few responses within the hour. "That alerted me that this was a bigger problem than what anybody thought. In this stage we don’t know what the person who stole them was using this for. For individual benefit or was it part of a larger conspiracy to commit coupon fraud."
Adolfo Rodriguez, 43, and Wilmian Milian, 27, returned the inserts, BSO said, and were issued notices to appear in court to answer misdemeanor charges of retail theft. (We're pretty sure they're not on Lamberti's friend list.)
Several of the 15 commenters disagreed with the sheriff that this was a big deal. (Miami Herald and SunSentinel Circulation directors said on the record they haven't seen a widespread problem, saying it was more of a nuisance to customers).
Citizens agreed. "There are far worse crimes going on. Coupon stealing investigation should be low/no priority," said one friend. "Pants on the ground is a much bigger crime. Start a "Fruit of the Loom" patrol," said another.
Finally, the person Lamberti was trying to protect weighed in: "If you happen to be a coupon cutter/collector, there is nothing worse than getting your paper and having all of the coupons missing. Theft is theft; and this one is on the rise BIG time. It definitely needs to be nipped in the bud somehow. I only wish I had an idea of how to do that," said the couponing-clipping citizen.
"This is quality of life crime," Lamberti said. "In these tough economic times, a single mother with kids spends $1.50 for the newspaper, for the coupon inserts in the hopes of saving $30 to $40 a week to feed her family. She gets home and finds out she’s been ripped off. That is despicable. That’s who those thiefs are hurting, the mom who is trying to scape by."
Another commenter asked: "Really...coupon theft...what is the crime? Shouldn't the merchants be responsible for getting a handle of that, or am I missing something?"
Lamberti says it hard to tell. It could be a case of hard-core couponers or hard-core criminals. "We can’t discriminate what crimes to enforce because this is petty. This is like graffiti, a blight on the neighborhood. This is a blight on our citizens."
CALL TO ACTION! Fight the blight with this coupon for 50-cents off the Sunday SunSentinel. Redeem it at Publix (or any merchant) and you'll be sure to get your coupon pack, saving Sheriff Lamberti some grief.
In addition to his personal account the sheriff also has the Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti fan page on Facebook, too. He frequently puts this message in his morning status updates: "Al Lamberti would like to remind each of you that I spend my own time and my own dime being on Facebook. Either before work or after work but not during work. Some people think I sit at work playing on the computer all day."

Video: South Florida shoppers on mad search for Missoni at Target stores, crashes website
South Florida shoppers are in a fashionista frenzy trying to snap up the uber-hot new Missoni collection introduced Tuesday at Target stores and online at Target.com.
Demand for the new 400-piece Italian-designed collection with the colorful zig zag pattern is high as shoppers continue to flock to stores on Wednesday looking for anything they can grab.
"I love the colors," said Pamela Kalnitzky, 49, of Fort Lauderdale, as she tried on a too-large Missoni jacket for $69.99. The lime-green jacket was one of the few pieces of women's clothing left on racks. "We are going to Italy in a few weeks and from what I understand, you can't tell the difference between the original the Target brand." Kalnitzky and her husband Phil were next heading to Target stores in Miami-Dade County in the hopes getting apparel to wear on their trip abroad.
Deman has been extraordinary high online, as well. Shoppers have been expriencing site crashes since Tuesday, getting this message: "Woof!" We are suddenly extremely popular. There is no need to refresh your browser. Please stay here and we'll get you in as soon as we can! Thank you and our apologies for the inconvenience" message at Target.com.
"The Missoni for Target collection has been an unprecedented success. We are thrilled at the overwhelmingly positive response to yesterday’s launch," Target spokesperson Jessica Deede said. "Yesterday, Target.com did experience an overwhelming amount of traffic to the site as a result of the Missoni for Target launch, which made our website inaccessible throughout portions of the day. The site is back up and running. Guests who are still interested in product are encouraged to check back with their local store to see if any products have been restocked in the coming days, as well as continuing to visit Target.com," she said.
Missoni madness begain before stores opened on Tuesday.
Employees at the Fort Lauderdale store said there were at least 30 people lined up on Tuesday morning before the store opened and nearly everything was gone in 30 minutes. "It was like Black Friday. It was just crazy," said an employee in the women's department on Wednesday morning.
"I went to the Plantation and Fort Lauderdale Target stores Tuesday to get a Missoni sweater. I got there at 11:30 a.m. and everything was gone," said Carolyn Burns of Plantation. "The entire line was gone, including all the clothes, the shoes, the luggage. There were just empy racks with a Missoni sign." On Wednesday, there were a few items, mostly from returns.
A fight even broke out on Tuesday between to women over an abandoned cart filled with Missoni merchandise. "I came at 9:30 a.m. yesterday," said Toure Evelyn, 28, of Oakland Park. "People were everywhere in the aisles, with Missoni bikes, luggage, clothes, carts were packed to the brim with the stuff. People were going crazy. Two ladies got into a fight over an abandoned cart filled with Missoni stuff."
On Tuesday, people were lining up in Palm Beach County, too. An employee reported that about 50 people waited at 6 a.m. and all the merchandise was gone in 10 minutes, many shoppers purchasing in bulk. The Delray store still has few pairs of shoes and some infant clothes on Wednesday morning.
Burns said clerks told her on Tuesday that customers were fighting over the stock and some were buying in bulk to put on eBay.com. There are nearly 30,000 listings on eBay.com for Missoni for Target merchandise.
The collection for women, men, girls and baby along with housewares and furniture, will be sold through Oct. 22. The limited-time collection, Target's largest to date, includes sweaters, shoes, clothes, accessories, stationery housewares, patio furniture and more. Pieces start at $2.99 to $599.99. The real stuff can run up to $1,500. Select pieces from the collection will be available for an extended run through early December at Target.com, according to a Target press release.
“This was Missoni mayhem,” said Joshua Thomas, a Target spokesman told the Associated Press. “This is unprecedented.”

Beauty report: Red-hot looks for fall for lips, tips and pulse points
Fall’s red-hot trend is red-hot red.
Yep. You read it right. Ruby-tinted hues in every shade — from bright to burnt to cherry to scarlet — have marched right off New York runways and onto lips, tips and toes.
So ditch those bright, light looks of spring and summer and get your drama on. We’ve got the 411 on fall and winter beauty looks for prefect pouts and flawless faces, and what’s fresh in sensuous scents and serious skin care. Also, check out all the hot, new looks at the Shop-O-Matic Beauty Bash on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Bloomingdales.
Lancôme Paris
We’re mad for Lancôme Paris’ L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor, rigt, in Hold Up Red ($29) and Mini Le Vernis nail polish in Bang Bang Red ($15). But oui went absolutely insane for the Blush Multilumiére in Maison Lancome ($40). This multi-colored blush and highlighter is embossed with a Parisian city scene complete with an Eiffel Tower. It will leave you glowing, just like a lover’s kiss on the banks of the Seine.
Estée Lauder
Estée Lauder’s new Pure Color Sensuous Rouge ($28) offers a luminous finish in 12 fabulous shades. The long-lasting color surrounds a lip-loving soft core of moisturizing fruit extracts and shea butter. Testers were partial to Rose Exposed and raved about its delicious vanilla scent.
Chanel
Chanel has reimagined its iconic eau de parfum with No. 19 Poudré ($85). This new, musky variation on the classic scent, which was introduced in 1970, has crisp, green notes blended with powdery iris and white musk. Trivia: No. 19 got its name from Mademoiselle Coco Chanel’s birthday (Aug. 19). Whatever the numerology, it adds up to one delicious fragrance.
Space NK
Soak and soothe the soul with Sai-Sei, right, the Japanese-inspired luxury bathing collection now at Space NK, inside Bloomingdale’s. This new line, inspired by ancient bathing rituals, is packed with essential minerals. Mineral Relax Bath Milk ($35) has soy milk protein to calm and comfort. Soften up with Mineral Deep Moisture Body Cream ($38), which has Uji green tea and rice bran to lock in moisture. The line is a sensory joy as well.
Kiehl’s
If you spy with your little eye a few lines and wrinkles around that most delicate area, then try a late-night rendezvous with Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye ($36). Applied before bed, this cream is packed with powerful, natural botanicals squalane and evening primrose oil to plump and smooth fine lines, while butcher’s broom extract is meant to sweep away puffiness.
Sue Devitt
Sue Devitt Microquatic Marine Crystal Collagen Masque ($125) is the latest addition to the brand’s superb Crystal Collagen collection. This medical-grade formulation is infused with marine collagen, hyaluronic acid and seaweed extract. It was developed for use after laser treatments, chemical peels, injectables and microdermabrasion. Testers reported firmer faces and felt an intense cooling effect as soon as it was applied.
MAC
Get flawless and create an optical illusion with MAC’s Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder ($23). This colorless powder — available in loose or compact form — sets makeup, reduces shine while magically minimizing pores, fine lines and imperfections. Works wonders over Prep + Prime Fortified Skin Enhancer ($30), a tinted primer that evens skin tone and brightens dull complexions.
