Local libraries are offering free e-books, music and more with mobile technology to compete with online retailers Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble. Best part: It's all free with a library card.

The Freegal service, available nationally through local librarires, gives library-card members free access to to 50 record labels in Sony's music catalog. The MP3 files are yours to keep.

Users can choose from hundreds of thousands of tunes in every musical genre, from rock to rap to pop to classical. Artists include Aerosmith, Beyonce, Pitbull and Carrie Underwood, among other top hitmakers.

Miami-Dade Public Library System and Palm Beach County Library do not currently subscribe to Freegal, but they do offer free e-books and apps.

In Broward County, go to Broward.FreegalMusic.com. Enter your library card number; the PIN is the last four digits of your phone number.

In Central Florida, visit OCLS.Info/FreegalMusic.asp
