Microsoft Surface RT tablets, Windows 8 on sale at South Florida pop-up shops on Friday

Gadget-hungry shoppers can test drive and buy Microsoft's über-hot Surface With Windows RT tablet at holiday "pop-up" shops opening Friday in South Florida malls.

The 10.8-inch Windows-based device arrived Friday at the new holiday stores open on the lower levels of Aventura and Dadeland malls, Microsoft said.

The 32GB tablet is $499, with 32GB and 64GB versions bundled with black Touch Covers selling for $599 and $699, respectively. The covers double as a keyboard and come in white, cyan, magenta and red for $119.

The Surface runs a "light" version of the new Windows 8 Operating System (also due out Oct. 26). The tablets come preloaded with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Internet Explorer 10 and Xbox apps. There are front and rear-facing HD video cameras, full-sized USB ports and an integrated kickstand.

The holiday shops also will sell accessories and premium Microsoft PCs, Ultrabook laptops, Windows 8 phones, Xbox gaming systems and software.

Microsoft opened its only Florida retail store at Florida Mall in Orlando on Aug. 15.

With only about 30 retail locations nationwide, Microsoft is launching more than 30 holiday shops so customers can preview the goods in time for the busy holiday shopping season.
