Leftovers and Lunch in Style with Thermos

lunchtote.jpg
Bringing lunch from home is proving more popular as folks pinch pennies and try to stay away from eating out. That could get pricey.

So, why not add a little flair where you keep your food? I've been reusing plastic grocery bags to store my lunch. Very "green" of me, but not effective in keeping leftovers fresh and cool. (Don't worry, I'll still recycle those bags. I've been "going green" since middle school).

Today I found this great polka dot-themed lunch tote from Thermos at Target. At $10.99, the insulated bag comes in other fun prints as well as in smaller and bigger sizes.

It's also good for a quick trip to the beach when you want to pack away some drinks and snacks. Check the totes out in Target stores or here.

Movie reels: Decorate your media room walls

reels.jpg

Recently, when I wrote a story on entertainment rooms for City & Shore, our upscale magazine, I was fascinated with the large film reels the designer used in the 421-square-foot media room of the model in Boca Raton's Azura development.

She found them at a designer-only source, but now you don't have to be a media mogul to afford the great look. Ballard Designs, a catalog that gives you a designer look at a reasonable price, has film reel plaques in its latest catalog.

Three different size reels are sold together for $179. The largest represents the size used for silent films, the medium was used for black-and-white movies and the smallest is for color. They are metal with applied rust finishes. Instructions are given for hanging on different type walls.

To order, go to ballarddesigns.com or call 800-367-2775.

Great deals at Pier 1

While I was in Miami Beach this past weekend, I stopped in Pier 1 to see what the 75 percent off signs on the window were all about.
chest.jpeg

newpillow.jpg

We did find some good buys like the martini glasses that were $6 for $2.98 and the Veranda floor screen that was $149.98 for only $36.95. They still had a ton of Christmas stuff for 75 percent off. I know Christmas seems like so 2008, but now is the time to buy for next year.

Check www.pier1.com for good buys under "Clearance" such as the Ron 4-drawer chest that was $349 for $199.98 and the Crinkle Pillows that were $22 for $5.48.

When I checked out, the salesclerk asked for my e-mail so I could get sneak peaks at special offers, new arrivals and store events. He said there also would be 20 percent off coupons. Can't wait. You should sign up. We should save money everywhere we can these days.

Up to 75 percent off Williams-Sonoma items

Williams%20Sonoma.jpg

I've been eyeing this Williams-Sonoma berry wreath for awhile, but it was too expensive for my taste at $49.99. Now, with Williams-Sonoma's winter sale of up to 75 percent holiday and other items, the wreath has fallen to the buyable price of $19.99.

My Christmas wreath, live evergreens that I decorated, is sadly awaiting garbage pickup and my door just seems, well, bare. This wreath of natural looking fall foliage really could be used year-round.

Other Williams-Sonoma buys include a chocolate fondue pot for $14.99 and fluted glassware for $14.99-$16.99. Love these after-holiday sales! -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Christmas rush: NY & Co. 50 percent off plus coupon

We women are certainly done with our Christmas shopping by now (well, almost), so now it's time to shop for ourselves! All the last-minute men will be wandering the malls this weekend -- poor lost souls. (Hey, another reason to go shopping for the single ladies.)

A good way to do that are after-Christmas sales. One that could be good is Crate & Barrel's, which sent out a postcard advertising up to 60 percent off in its "winter clearance" sale starting Dec. 26.

Seldom Seen returns and other Las Olas tidbits

Vera%20Bradley.png

I was crushed earlier this fall when I walked past Seldom Seen, one of my favorite stores on Las Olas Boulevard, and there was a big sign of the times: Bankruptcy Sale.

Seldom Seem "reopens under new management," apparently, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, according to a new sign in the window.

All the same great stuff seems to be in the window. Seldom Seen has always been the place to go when you were looking for that perfect gift for someone, but had no idea what to buy. Walk into the store and there it was! Welcome back, Seldom Seen.

In other Las Olas news, I found these great Vera Bradley "Zip ID" case -- just enough room for a license, lipstick and your car keys. Only $10 at Needlepoint Originals. Great holiday present for colleagues or girlfriends.

Lisa Perry Comes to Palm Beach

Lisa Perry, the designer who has a love of 1960s vintage couture fashion and art, will open her third boutique in the U.S. on December 17 in Palm Beach.

She has cool stuff like this multi-colored dress. Other items range from architecture, fashion and art books, jewlery, rare DVDs of movies from the 60s and vintage Heller dishware in bright colors.

No wonder she loves this stuff Her bio says: She grew up in the 'burbs of Chicago with Marimekko in her bedroom, a Saarinen filled living room and two-tone orange shag in her family room. (OMG, I shouldn't admit this, but I had two-tone orange shag in my bedroom in the 70s.)

Her Web site, lisaperrystyle.com doesn't give any prices, but expect them to be pricey in her 'hood. The store is located at 245A Worth Ave. in Palm Beach. For the holidays, it will be open 12 .m.-6 p.m. daily. Sunday hours continue only until Jan. 4.

Designer handbags a deal at TJ Maxx

I've been to New York City and back looking high and low for the right purse. I needed a plain black purse, but I'm a little fussy. I want one where I can easily access my cell phone. It has to fit a reporter's notebook. It can't be too boring and it has to be well under $100.Kathy%20purse.jpg

Finally, I swung by TJ Maxx at 3722 N. Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point and found a great selection of handbags, many designer names including B Makowsky, Juicy Couture and Steve Madden. I chose a Kathy Van Zeeland for only $39.99; I saw similar purses on sale at department stores for twice as much.

My purse is similar to the one at right, but with a little more bling.

The store also had freshwater pearls for $14.99 and holiday wrapping paper for $3.99 a roll.

So TJ Maxx's motto of "Economize don't Compromise" holds up. And some breaking news:I overheard store managers say they're putting out newer handbags on Saturday (Dec. 6). I just couldn't wait any longer. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Z Gallerie for style at a bargain price

blinglamp.jpg

bling%20rings.jpg

Earlier today I went to one of my favorite haunts -- Z Gallerie in Boca's Mizner Park. The California-based chain is enchanting. Every time I go there I feel like a kid in a candy store. The home furnishings are reasonably priced and look like they cost much more. Don't you just love that? And the displays are so creative that you can get great ideas to design your home.

Anyhow, on this trip I found some great items for the holiday table:

The word "bling" may not be in vogue right now like Recessionista is, but you can buy your bling and not feel quilty. I fell in love with the pair of bling tealight candleholders that resemble a crystal chandelier on a silver post. The 20 inch are $39.95 each and the 17 inch are $37.95 each. To go with them is a set of four bling napkin rings for $19.98. Just picture them on a holiday table -- terrific!

Also, check the sales items in the Boca store. I found some fabulous wine, champagne and martini glasses ornamented with gold, green and red for 25 percent off. They were $9.99 and are now $7.50 each. I would show you, but they aren't on the Website.

While you are there, be sure to look in the north end of the store for closeouts -- 50 to 70 percent off. For store locations, see zgallerie.com.

Designer jeans for $40 at Filene's Basement

I had to go to the place "where bargains were born," Filene's Basement, now that it has opened in Aventura.

It's nothing like the flagship store in Boston. I remember going there with my friend Lynn. It was a mess but a fun mess. Clothes on racks all over the place. I found a slinky black dress for some ridiculously low price.

Aventura is a bit more tame. Clothes are nicely organized on racks sporting designer names. The prices? A bit more steep than I remember in Boston.

Still, there are bargains to be found. The biggest is probably Filene's choice of designer jeans, many for less than $40. A variety of earrings and necklaces are easy pickups as well and designer sunglasses such as a pair of Oscar de la Renta's for $12.99.

Fantastic prices on women's and men's suits, if you're in the market for that.

I fell in love with a wrap dress from Barney's New York, but it was still too pricey for this bargain hunter at $130. But I'll be back. It's worth the drive. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

The sister store to Forever XXI is at the Dolphin Mall in Miami. As my shopping sister Kathy recently wrote, we had a great time picking up jewelry, belts and other items -- mostly under $10 -- at For Love 21.

Filene's Basement opens in Aventura October 15th

I've heard so much about Filene's Basement. Never been there. I am really excited....I'm finally going to get to shop at Filene's Basement! It feels so...so...what's the word...so very cosmopolitan!!

I saw it on Biscayne Blvd the other day as I drove down to Bal Harbor Shops. Wow, my heart jumped...it looked open...too bad...not yet. A freestanding building on the east side of Biscayne. (17651 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura.)

I live and work in Fort Lauderdale, but it seems there are a few reasons to drive south for discount shopping. Loehmann's is down there, and now Filene's.

What do you think? Is Filene's Basement worth getting excited about? Is it all it's cracked up to be? Have any of you shopped there? Is there a good selection? What kind of things do they sell...Designer dresses...Casual clothes? Which do you like better, Loehmanns or Filene's?

Wear basic black and load up on jewelry from Forever 21

acc_jewelry_image.jpg
My hair stylist, Francesca Guerrera at Echo, lives in my condo complex. She's a glamorous Italian gal I often pass in the parking lot when I'm coming home from work tired and bedraggled. She's usually headed out, looking like a million: great dress, hair and makeup perfect, accessorized to the max.

My big Las Vegas wedding is this weekend, so I went in to get a last minute haircut. I was whining about my recurrent problem...my hatred of shopping for cocktail dresses, especially for weddings. If you read this blog, you already know about my problem. Once again, I'm out of time, and no new dress!!

You'll never believe...she let me in on a little secret of hers. "Take a plain simple dress and load up on jewelry from Forever 21 at the Boca Town Center. It's so cheap, even if it discolors in a few months, who cares? It'll look good at the wedding. Wear lots pearls and chains, all shapes and lengths, you'll look fabulous, and no one will ever know."

Hide your stuff in these rattan storage boxes

boxes.jpg

My daughter emailed me the link for these rattan storage boxes, knowing how much I love boxes that don't need to hide in a closet. Closets hadn't been invented yet in the middle ages when my condo building was built!

I NEVER have enough storage space. I'm a big fan of decorative storage, hopefully I can eventually get to that elusive stage where I have 'a place for everything, and everything in its place.'

The three wooden boxes were $89 at retail, marked down to $69, and with an additional 15% off were $59. Still not cheap, but if they help me get even a fraction my life in order, it'll be worth it.

I ordered two sets. I plan on storing my grandkids little toys and books in the two big ones. If they are as nice as they look in the picture, I can stack them and use them as a small side table. You'll just have to hold your drink if the kids are visiting. Any suggestions for a good use for the two smaller ones?

Ballard Designs is having an Anniversary Sale, 15% off everything until September 15th. Have a look at the 'Estate Sale' section for the boxes. In this case, the extra 15% covered the dreaded shipping charges.

Pillows, bedspreads and do-dads

The Linen Store, off Linton Boulevard near Target in Delray Beach, is usually too pricey for me.

But in August, they're having a summer sale. Lots of items including comforters, coverlets, pillow, bath towels and decor are 30 to 50 percent off.

I found something I've been looking for forever -- a toothbrush holder for only $3.99. It's a gold Croscill that holds four brushes. I like it because it doesn't have a container at the bottom. Those tend to become laden with toothpaste and are hard to clean.

I also noticed some cute linen towels embroidered with fanciful scenes of cities: Las Vegas, Rome and Miami.

35 percent off jewelry

Here are a few tips for using the Website:

When you first open the Web site, it looks like nothing is there except a side rail. Scroll down a page view to see the choices.

Click through to "I want it" to see the price of the item clearly.

Your discount isn't clear until you go to the checkout and enter the code "Summer 35".

bin.jpg

I was searching for some items featured in the August issue of Country Living magazine when I came across Vivaterra.com. I wasn't hot on the stuff featured in the magazine, but these two other items on the Website rock.

If you love bringing nature inside the house, check out this side table made out of glass and wood branches from fallen trees. I love the shape, and the fact it brings texture into an indoor living space. The size is 19.5"D x 20.5"H and it sells for $198.

Never feel guilty about all those magazines you read again. This is the ultimate recycled item with style. This rolled magazine storage crate is made from magazines around the world, which create the vertical striations on the base. Above you can see the foreign magazine covers. Each one is different and coated with a natural finish. It's 16.5"W x 11"D x 7.5"H and sells for $69.

Town Center finds

Summer sales are in full swing at Town Center in Boca Raton this weekend. Here are some items worth checking out:

Belts, thin and wide, on sale for $19 and up, at Nordstrom's. Ralph Lauren and Italian-made leather can be found in the sale section.

50 percent off leather purses at Clark's for a sale price of $50-$60. Nice styles and colors available.

70 percent off jewelry at Coldwater Creek. I picked up a shell necklace threaded with gold for only $19.99 -- my indulgence of the weekend.

Stopped by Bloomingdale's "final sale" but found nothing. Even at 50 percent off, $100-plus for a blouse is over this shopper's budget. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Model handbag: Kate Moss look for less

mossbag.jpg
satchel.jpg

Yeah, yeah, I know. Not all of us can look like model Kate Moss or have the bucks to buy a pricey alligator "Bespoke" handbag. But you can get the look for less.

I had to lock up my charge cards when I saw this lookalike bag in People's Style Watch. The Green Victoria Handbag isn't alligator, but the patent croc is a decent substitute. The 16Wx12Hx5D bag has rhinestone pave on lock with pockets for cell phone and sunglasses. It is only $58 at shopsueyboutique.com.

Jonathan Adler's cool pillows, sconces

needlepoint08_home.jpg
t_17489.jpg
Have you been to LIncoln Road Mall in South Beach lately? It's been a while for me, but my husband and I made the pilgrimage Saturday. I forgot how many beautiful people you see on the road. Slim. Taught. Gorgeous. Ah, to be 18 again...

But I digress. I wanted to finally visit the Jonathan Adler store. The potter turned designer has a wonderful sense of humor that is reflected in his products. (Just read his "manifesto" on the wall.)

Some of his latest needlepoint pillows will create a new kind of pillow talk. We loved the "lust" pillow ($165), the "pill" pillow ($165) and the "ties" pillow ($195).

And if you're a parrent, you could go gaga over the giraffe sconces ($195 each). We love this: You can buy a pair that face in opposite directions.

The sales staff is friendly and they make you feel right at home. Ana Meza, the store manager, was helpful and great to talk with.

The store is located at 1024 Lincoln Road Mall, Miami Beach. That's on the south side of the mall west of Victoria's Secret. Call 305-534-5600. For more info see www.jonathanadler.com.

Perfect purse: Eyelet dreams

purse2.jpg

Anyone who knows me would tell you I'm not the frilly type girl. No Laura Ashley clothes with feminine white eyelet collars. No ruffles. For me, it's all about the line, color and drape in clothing as it is in interior design.

But this time I make an exception. I just fell in love with this purse when I got a "shopper alert" from the InStyle folks. This Lucy Eyelet Clutch from Lauren Merkin is linen with eyelet panels at sides. Even the lining is cool -- metallic-stripe.

The 6"H x 11"L x 1"D is $250 at www.shopbop.com.

Huge SALE at Macy's this weekend

Don't you hate when your friends tell you about all the money they saved at a great sale, as in "these Stuart Weitzman shoes were only $19.99," but they don't tell you until wayyyyy after it's over?

I had a few spare moments this weekend while visiting family in Atlanta, did my usual sale check at Dillards, love their 75% off sales, but nothing much there right now. Then on to Macy's, and lo and behold, the signs were up! An extra 40% off the 75%!! My kind of sale!!!

I bought some great basics: khaki pants and navy shorts for practically nothing.

I called Macy's here, and YAYYY! they are a week behind Atlanta. The Super Sale starts here tomorrow! Thursday.

Take an extra 40% off sale prices in Mens/Womens Apparel starting Thursday July 17th though Sunday. Extra 50% off womens clearance shoes. The handbag sale (50-75% off) starts today thru the 31st.

Let the savings begin!!!

New store: HomeGoods

shadowbox1.jpg

HomeGoods has always been one of my fave places to shop for home decor. The prices are great, especially on some small furniture items.

If you live in Margate, you may want to check out the newest store, which opened June 22 at Coral Landings III, Sample Road and NW 62nd Avenue. Hours are 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday.

The store PR machine claims that their prices are 20-60 percent below finer catalog, specialty and department store prices. That's a claim that's hard to prove because no one charges suggested retail these days. But I do know I have found some good buys at HomeGoods.

Check out the Website at www.homegoods.com for customer blogs and photos of their finds like this shadowbox.

New shops: Lilly Pulitzer comes to Boca

NMT1KWQ_mh.jpg

Remember the Arab oil embargo of 1973? Apparently, all the politicians forgot. So, as we struggle with gas prices over $4 a gallon, many of us are planning our shopping trips more than ever before.

We on the shopping blog promise to make your lives easier and to save you gas by letting you know about all the new store openings.

Here goes: A new 4,200-square-foot Lilly Pulitzer store will open on June 27th at The Terrace in Town Center at Boca Raton. The new store will have women's, men's and children's collections as well as gifts and accessories, including bags, shoes, jewelry and eyewear.

Palm Beach's Lilly Pulitzer no longer owns her namesake label, but the designers have taken her bright colors and fun patterns and updated them. I just love the look. Perfect for Florida -- then and now.

Pottery Barn: Summer sale

candel.jpeg

vaes2.jpeg

Pottery Barn always has some cool things to revamp your home, especially accessories.

Now, when many of us don't have the extra bucks to totally redecorate our homes, it's time to take advantage of deals like Pottery Barn's summer sale. Take note that those items ending in .99 are final sale and cannot be returned,

Here are two great items that I found at www.potterybarn.com:

I love the Crown Pillar Candles that are painted white and distressed to make them look like they belonged to your grandma. They are handcarved and have a metal disc to catch the drips. They were $39 and are now $29.

My next fave, the Ceramic Sealife Vase, is a great buy, The pieces are very sculptural with ceramic shells and seaweed applied by hand, THey were $59-$149 and are on sale for $39-$99.

Happy shopping....Treat yourself and see the others at www.potterybarn.com.

Talbots: 50 percent off summer sale

linen1.jpg
sweater1.jpeg.jpg

The last time I was in Talbots was to buy a gift certificate for a friend's brithday. She lives in Philadelphia and could be in a Talbots' advertisement. Don't you just hate people like that?

Anyhow, yesterday the store sent me a postcard announcing the "Summer Sale: Save up to 50 percent off original prices." It said supply is limited and "when they're gone, they're gone." So hurry, girlfriend.

For those of you who are mall-o-phobic, you can also get the deals on the Website (www.talbots.com). My closest Talbots is at Town Center in Boca Raton. Check the Web site for more locations.

To let you know what the deals are like, here are two good buys with Talbots' simple chic that I found on the Web site.

Scoop neck cabled sweater --- was $38 and is now $18.99.

Two-piece linen dress -- was $158 and is now $78.99.

Have fun...Remember most stores are finished with summer clothing by mid-July. Then they stock winter clothes that we can't wear unless we travel up north. I never did understand that marketing. You'd think more SoFla stores could stock summer stuff yearround.

Palm Beach designer sale: Home furnishings

fhillips14new.jpeg

How do you know when this recession is really bad? When shops on Worth Avenue and the nearby vias in Palm Beach close.

Jack Fhillips, a Palm Beach designer with taste to make his clients look like their money was inherited not made yesterday, is closing his shop. Jack told me that a recent rent raise teamed with declining sales forced the decision. (Here's is Jack in his shop a few years ago.)

Everything in the shop is 50 percent off. Some of the best deals are on the furniture such as a Charles Stewart Sofa that was $4,250 and is now $2,125., Other items include a gorgeous Asian-motif chest that was $695 and is now $347.50; a needlepont dog pillow that was $210 and is now $105.

Sales are final. They are sold "as is." No shipping in available. They will deliver free locally, but expect to pay a fee if you live outside the West Palm\Palm Beach area.

My house is chockoblock full, but I did manage to find a beautiful jar with lid and coat of arms thst looks like I inherited it from great grandma. It was $35 on sale for $17.50.

The shop is located at 7 Via Parigi, which is last via on Worth Avenue across from the Everglades Club. Call 561-659-4452. The shop will close June 20.

How bad is it on Worth Avenue? I was shocked this weekend when I counted seven shops empty. Gone are two of my faves: Brighton Pavillion and Devonshire. I wasn't able to confirm, but word on the street is they will reopen in warehouses in West Palm.

How bad is this when the wealthy folks are no longer shopping?

It's a White & Black affair

It's no surprise that I would choose one of my favorite stores for my first entry. With at least ten South Florida locations for your shopping delight, White House I Black Market http://www.whitehouseblackmarket.com/store/home.jsp
is a must for classic clothes and accessories that fit so well it's like the pieces are custom made.

What's even more attractive to me is the store's sale rack, I'm talking up to 50% off . The website has a constant supply of sale items.
If you sign up to become Black Book member, you get an extra 5% off all purchases plus free shipping. Then there's the extra 5% off you get for your birthday.

Here are a few of my favorites from the website's sale items.
This Watersberry Bustier is 100% silk and only $39.99.

Banana Tree theme(right): Love the subtle motif. Prices range from $65 for a 17-by-17 pillow to $145 for a 22-by-22 pillow.

Two signed versions of this cool lamp, which has a shade made of 40 pairs of aviators, are available

When its turned off, it looks like a silver sculpture. When on, the lenses turn transparent and it casts oval shadows on the wall.

The auction benefits Hudson's charity, Vday (anti-female violence), and Gossip Girl's choice, The Children's Defense League. It ends June 16.

Ever since I first heard about it last week, I have been trying to find a link to make it easy for you guys to bid. The PR person finally came through. Click here for it.

South Beach Style to close -- Great Sale

newtable.jpg

bed.jpg

South Beach Style, one of my favorite design stores, is scheduled to close its doors Thursday, May 29. It breaks my heart because these folks really knew great style. They carried Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, one of my fave furniture lines plus some other good brands. (I own a MG+BW sofa and dining room chairs, which I bought at their former South Beach store.. MG+BW was the first to recognize that washable slipcovers are a great thing for people with kids and pets.)

Some good items are still available, such as Tonin Casa glass dining table, which was $4,495 and is now $2,250 (at left) and the queen storage bed with one nightstand (at right) , which was $2,335 and is now $950.

The store is located at 515 N. Andrews Avenue, between Broward and Sunrise Boulevards in Fort Lauderdale. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Everything must go by closing on Thursday. Call 954-764-5020. The South Beach location is already closed.

All sale items are as-is and all sales are final. Delivery is available to Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

The owners tell me they have no current plans for another South Florida location.

Sayonara Angsana: 75 percent off Asian furnishings

Wayang%20Golek%20Puppets%202.JPG

If you haven't gone to Angsana's "going out of business" sale yet, better hurry. The stylish store, which features Asian home furnishings, accessories and gifts, will close its doors on Saturday, May 17.

Prices are now rock bottom -- with 75 percent off of everything. Even the fixtures are for sale. Some of the bargains include: silk boxes from Thailand, $2 and $3; Wayang Golek puppets from Indonesia (in picture at right), which were $75, now $18.75; a trio of mesh round baskets, which were $40, now $10; and a room divider with horizontal pieces of bamboo hung on a frame, which was $445, now $111. And there are still plenty of Buddhas, tables, chairs and other items left.

This is another closing that breaks my heart. Angsana was always one of my favorite stores because owner Michael Lipkowitz is a master at finding unusual and handmade pieces from his travels to Southeast Asia and Indonesia. He located just south of Swinton Avenue in a house because rents on Atlantic Avenue got too high. But, after he moved, the economy stalled.

"We just can't stay open," he said. "Everyone is hurting. No one has any money to spend any more." Lipkowitz said he is going to concentrate on his interior design business.

Angsana is located at 20 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach; 561-330- 6676; angsanaimports.com. Hours are 11a.m.-6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Great sunglasses with a Celtic touch and star power

SHOT-2.JPG

These are really cool looking sunglasses -- for you or your mom.

Designer Edward Beiner, a native Brazilian, says he was inspired by Steve McQueen, Elvis, Audrey Hephurn, the sunny skies of Miami and Celtic designs for his new eyewear collection.

Beiner, who has lived in SoFla more than 20 years, is considered a design guru to stars such as Lindsay Lohan, Thalia, Alicia Keys, Gloria Estefan, Shaq, Jennifer Lopez and Sarah, the Duchess of York. But you don't have to be a star to afford his cool shades. They sell for $380. For more, see edwardbeiner.com.

The latest in his nine SoFla shops is at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens.

Mother's Day Gifts: Cool handbag for you or mom

handbag
I have been looking for months for the perfect bag to go with my pair of gold tone, snakeskin shoes with a wedge heel.

Everything I found was either too glitzy or the wrong tone until I found this bag at Giovagio at the Town Center Mall in Boca Raton. My gold tone leather bag has pockets on each side for a cell phone or phones, two open pockets and a zippered compartment inside. It looks like a designer creation and sells for far less -- $75. Giovagio also sells jewelry and belts.

Joan Leger and her mother, Florence Leger, operate the kiosk located near Nordstrom and in front of Lucky Brand in a kiosk. It is open every day except Sunday. For information, call 786-873-9331.

I finally trained my husband. He no longer asks "Do you need another handbag?" He knows now that need has nothing to do with it. A new handbag is what a new hat was to another generation.

These snakeskin bangles look like they cost far more than $7 each. At his price, you can buy mom three or four and a few for yourself.
Check out the faux flowers like this peony arrangement in a ceramic vase for $20. It's perfect for a small area like a powder room or mom's dressing table.
There are also other cool objects like this glass purse than can be used as a decorative object or a planter. It's $25. You may also find some decorative frames for $12 or three small jewel boxes for $10.

Spring into a new season (with a new bag)

Since we don't have a real change of seasons in SoFla, you have to do it with accessories.

And really, isn't it more fun to say Welcome Spring with a new bag, rather than a trench coat or rain boots?

That said, check out the Spring '08 line at Chickabu. Created by designer/owner Connie Paradis, the bags come in a great selection of bold and beautiful fabrics and in sizes from evening to tote. Says Paradis, in a company press release: “Each bag is embellished with the unexpected bauble or bead for that smashing signature piece making even jeans and a t-shirt a pulled together look.”

The art on the website isn't great -- but here's two we liked;

Those who think they know what we want on the Web keep talking about a "sense of community." Translation? We want to be able to connect with others of like interests and share ideas and problems.

Shopstyleliving.com calls itself "the first social shopping site devoted to home decorating." I love the idea. It's a great place to shop, discover new brands and share ideas with family and friends.

One of my fave features is you can set price alerts. The site will send you an email when your selected items goes on sale. How cool is that? The site brings together all the current deals, promotion codes and free shipping offers in one place.

You can also assemble a Stylebook of your fave looks for a room, occasion or trend that you can share with others. You can upload your own blog or blog with others.

I discovered this cool way to light your life while browsing through the April issue of Harper's Bazaar, my fave fashion mag.

It comes from Muuto, a new Scandinavian design house whose names means "fresh perspective" in Finnish. What I like best about it is how it seems to combine the Yin and Yang of design -- the formal and the informal.

You can find it at aplusrstore.com. It comes in a graphic design box, ships in 48 hours and sells for $165.

Angsana Going Out of Business Sale

javalamp.jpg
Angsana, a wonderful place to buy Asian and Indonesian imports, is going out of the retail business.

This is sad news for those of us who wanted to find designer-quality goods without hiring a professional. The store, located at 20 S. Swinton Ave. in Delray Beach always offered unusual furniture and a great collection of accessories that range from baskets to buddhas.

"This sale has been initiated only after careful consideration, as I have decided to focus Angsana exclusively in the area of design consultation," owner Michael Lipkowitz wrote in a letter to his best customers.

Most of the items are 20 percent off, but this weekend they will be reduced to 40 percent off. Different deals will be offered until May. Call ahead at 561 330-6676 to see what they are. Also see angsanaimports.com.

Pottery Barn cool lamp

img4m.jpg

I've always had a thing about lamps. The ones I typically fall for cost way too much. Even when Carter and I find one at a discount, it's still pricey. (Yes, I still do love that brass bamboo-looking lamp with the Asian shade that set us back $500.) I better still love it eight years later.

Anyhow, it's amazing how cool the milk-glass table lamp bases are from Pottery Barn. They come in green, marigold, espresso, orange and white. The lamps are a reasonable $90. The natural fiber tapered drum shades range from $11 to $59. See potterybarn.com.

A man who used to own a lamp shade store in Boca Raton gave me the best advice about shades. He liked to say, "Buying a shade without the lamp is like buying a hat without your head." It's best to either buy them at the same time to make sure they look right. Or bring your lamp in when you buy the shade.

If you have any bright ideas, let me know.

It's embarrassing to admit it, but I'm hooked on Gossip Girl, CW's soapy drama about prep school teens on Manhattan's Upper East Side. It's a sign, no, it's a banner, no, it's.... a recycled bag

Forgot to post this last week. It comes from Rod Hagwood's The Fabulous Report which appears in the Sun-Sentinel's Sunday Lifestyle section, and profiles an inventive local company RetroActif, which makes cool bags and the like out of recycled products.

Is your love of accessorizing destroying the planet?

A bit dramatic yes, but the "green" crusade of recycling and minimal carbon imprints isn’t exactly known for restraint.

And neither is Monica and Ziad Shuman of Pembroke Pines. The couple scours South Florida looking for PVC banners - often used to promote special events, festivals and concerts - that they can recycle into handbags and other accessories in a line called RetroActif.

"We get them from everywhere," said Ziad. "Often the manufacturer lets us know. The people at 3A Banners have been very kind."

The husband and wife got the idea about a year and a half ago, when Monica was looking for something to do while caring for their son, who is now three.

"Now we’re in 40 stores from Hawaii to Belgium," said Ziad. "It’s been amazing. In San Francisco a friend helped us with the market and so now northern California is great for us. We also have a friend in Barcelona doing it there. It’s becoming popular in the U.S. more and more. With a little help from our friends, we’ve been getting a snowball effect. Canada is a market for us because of a friend in Montreal helping us. The same for Europe."

Stepping out

R95149_030_S.jpg
If there's one thing a good shopper learns it's this: Buy it when you see it.

I have been looking for years for a replacement for my peep toe heels and finally found them at coldwatercreek.com. These satin dress pumps with patent leather 3-inch heels were a reasonable $69 and good quality.

I never considered ordering shoes through the mail, but Coldwater Creek allows you to return anything you buy by mail at one of their stores. (There's one at The Galleria in Fort Lauderdale and at Wellington Green in Wellington.)

Another bonus: Tear out the discount cards you can find in women's magazines and you can save $25 for every $100 you spend in the stores, online and in the catalog.

A coat you can carry

snowmass.jpg

I am one of those gals that dresses for the seasons, even though we don't have seasons in South Florida. (88 degrees in September? No problem. My office's airconditioning makes boots and sweaters very plausible.)

That said, one thing I miss about living in a cold climate is the ritual of buying a winter coat. I lived in Delaware for 5 years and Chicago and Cleveland before that. So, over the course of ten years I had plenty of coats. (Yes, honey, coat styles do go out of fashion!) My all-time fave: a black and white plaid wool swing coat that I bought on major sale at a boutique in Lewes, Delaware. A distant second: The puffy blue ski jacket that got me through several snowy Ohio winters.

Of course, no need for coats in sunny SoFla, but i just found something that might appease my coat fixation. The new Snowmass Stevie bag from Kate Spade looks so wintry chic. How fun to carry it around and pair it with... flip flops!

When it comes to accessories, Chicos is chic

chicobracelet.jpg
Spotted this adorable bracelet on a well-dressed lady sitting next to me on an airplane recently.

From Chico's, (which, incidentally always has a great selection of jewelry) it's called the So Special bracelet ($28). It's mixed metal (perfect for people like me who mix silver and gold jewelry daily) and etched with words like "hope," "inspire," "dream," "respect." Would make a great gift for someone who's, well, so special.

Tip: The lady on the plane wore three of them, creating a cool stacked bangle look.
