I saved more than $121 on my grocery bill this weekend by using coupons and a little planning. I paid just $27 for four bags of food and staples to stock my pantry.
Many ask me how I do it, so here's a quick primer to get you started on the road to super-saving:
Enjoy the City coupon books: I buy these to get the $5 off $30 purchase coupons good at Winn-Dixie. They also are accepted at many Publix markets as a competitor coupon. Enjoy the City books are on sale for 80 percent off through Tuesday.
Newspaper coupons: Buy at least two copies of the Sunday Sun Sentinel (here's a 50-cent off coupon) to take full advantage of buy-one-get-one-free sales. Use two coupons on BOGO sale items to get them for super cheap. Clip coupons for anything you use regularly and all coupons for free items. Then, hold them until the BOGO sales are held, which usually cycle every 10-12 weeks.
Store flyers:Winn-Dixie often has coupons in its flyer. Publix allows you to stack a manufacturer coupon with a Publix coupon or competitor’s coupon, but not both. (Be sure to grab at least two slick Publix flyers as you enter the store and combine them with manufacturer coupons. This is how you get items for nearly free. Learn more about Publix's coupon policy and be sure to follow the rules.
Online coupons: I regularly print at least two coupons from brands I use Coupons.com, Target.com, Whole Foods, on manufacturer websites and on Facebook.
Reward programs: Save big on on sales items with a Winn-Dixie reward card that also helps you save on gas at Shell with Fuel Rewards Network program. At Publix, which doesn't have a reward program, use Upromise e-coupons.
Match-ups: Use the weekly sales flyers which come in Wednesday's newspaper to match BOGO sales to your coupons, add in a few dollar-off coupons from Winn-Dixie, Doris Market, Whole Foods (often in the newspaper) and you're on your way to super-saving!
Save 80 percent on "Enjoy the City" coupon books with free shipping through Tuesday, Aug. 28 at midnight.

The "Ultimate Florida" edition books offer terrific coupons around the state, with savings at grocery stores, restaurants, retail and entertainment venues. They pay for themselves in just one use. Coupons expire in June 2013.
Grocery coupons: Each book contains four $5 off $30 purchase coupons at Winn-Dixie; these are accepted at many Publix markets, too, as a competitor coupon. (Check with your store to see if they are accepted.) You'll make $16 off each book by using these four coupons alone.
Attractions, entertainment and retail: Lion County Safari, Boomer's, Palm Beach Zoo, Florida Aquarium, Arabian Nights, Tampa Yankees, Sports Authority, Regal Theatres, car rentals and more.

Dollar Tree stores will begin taking manufacturer coupons on Sunday, Aug. 26, the company confirmed to Shop-O-Matic on Tuesday. Dollar Tree matter-of-factly confirmed the news in a customer inquiry on its Facebook fan page.
“We will be accepting manufacturer coupons for items that we sell at Dollar Tree stores beginning Sunday, Aug. 26," said Tim Reid, vice president of investor relations. Reid said the company has no plans to issue a press release with further details or to provide a written coupon policy.
"Our store managers will have the information on which coupons will be accepted on Sunday." There will be signs posted with information, too.
Considering Dollar Tree sells everything for $1, cents-off coupons, especially 50-cent-off and $1-off, would provide significant savings.
The Chesapeake, Virginia-based discount retailer has more than 4,500 stores in the United States and more than 300 in Florida.
If you’re shopping online, it makes cents to use rebate and coupon-code websites for your favorite retailers.
Sites such as Ebates.com, Upromise.com and RetailMeNot.com put extra money in your pocket, are simple to use and free to join. Check them out before you buy and get cash back at participating retailers including Macy’s, Walmart, Apple, Sears, Barnes & Noble, Amazon and Target, to name a few.
You can score coupon codes and free-shipping offers, as well as retail coupons to be used offline.
“It’s crazy not to use these sites,” says savings expert Mary Pat Pankoke, right, of Parkland. “They are going to give you a percentage back on what you are already spending, so get some of it back, even if it’s just sales tax.”
Each site offers unique ways to save. “Often, you’ll find additional coupon codes you can use when you check out, for even more savings that are exclusive to those sites,” says Pankoke, who teaches coupon classes around South Florida and writes about bargains at CouponClasses.com.
Karen Goldfarb, a Boynton Beach financial writer and mother of two, says she’s earned $180 using Ebates.com since 2009.
“It’s free money,” she says. “That’s pretty good just for clicking through their site to a participating retailer. It’s a no-brainer.”
Here’s how these sites work:
Ebates.com: Register with an email address and click one of 1,500 retailers listed on the site to get an e-rebate on your total purchase. (Example: Get 8 percent back on a purchase at JC Penney and Kohl’s, or 6 percent at Macy’s.) There are no fees or forms to mail. The site claims to have saved members more than $100 million. It’s free to register. Plus, you get a free $10 gift card at Target or Home Depot when you join and make a $25 purchase at any retailer on the site. Checks for $5.01 or more in accrued purchases are mailed four times a year.
Tip: “Watch for Ebates bonus days, particularly around the holidays,” Pankoke says. “We used Ebates when purchasing Halloween costumes and saved about $40 because it was a double Ebates bonus day, plus they had a 20 percent coupon code advertised on the site.”
Upromise.com: Register and start earning money toward college tuition (or opt for cash back) at more than 800 online stores (up to 5 percent back), 8,000 restaurants (up to 8 percent back) and travel (up to 4 percent back). Get credit for online purchases after clicking on a participating retailer. Link a credit or debit card and pay using that card at participating restaurants and earn cash in your account. Redeem your earnings into a high-yield Sallie Mae savings account, student loan, or 529 account, or request a check. Or, link existing college accounts. Transactions post in 30 to 90 days. Upromise and its partners have paid out more than $500 million, according to the site. Save even more with the Upromise TurboSaver.
Tip: Go to the Upromise site to activate digital coupons each month. The coupons will not lower your grocery bill, but rather the coupons’ value will be added to your account. “You can link your CVS or Winn-Dixie reward cards so when you redeem e-coupons the value will be deposited into your Upromise account,” Pankoke says. “Also, pick up a little green Upromise card at Publix and scan it to redeem e-coupons since Publix does not have a reward card.”
RetailMeNot.com: The largest coupon site online, it’s made up of a community of bargain hunters who post promotional coupon codes and deals. Example: Use code NEONPINK at Victoria's Secret to get a free backpack with purchase. Another code (FALL12) offers $15 off a $100 purchase online. RetailMeNot also offers thousands of printable grocery and store coupons. Search for coupons without creating an account, but some content requires free registration.
Tip: Check here before you buy anything online to see if you can save something, even if it’s free shipping. “I use RetailMeNot to find printable coupons that can be redeemed at brick-and-mortar stores,” Pankoke says. “With those, I can save 20 percent to 40 percent at stores like Jo-Ann Fabric or Michael’s.”
Save $5 on a $20 purchase at Walgreens when you flash your AARP card.
Make the purchase, show your card and the coupon will be printed on your register receipt. Use it the next time you shop.
A $16-per-year AARP membership also gets you discounts on dining, travel, entertainment, shopping, prescriptions and more. (We especially like the $5.50 popcorn and drink offer at Regal Cinemas.)

If you wanted to learn more about how to supersize your savings using coupons but missed our live coupon chat at 1 p.m. Wednesday with savings expert and couponing teacher Mary Pat Pankoke of CouponClasses.com, never fear.
We have a transcript of the chat that covered how to use coupons to get food for free and how to clip and organize. It even has a few deals you can use at the grocery store this week. Once you try it, you'll be hooked!
One idea that came out of the chat was to start a South Florida coupon club. If you're interested, e-mail me, Doreen Christensen, at DChristensen@SunSentinel.com and I'll add you to the growing list. This was such a great idea!
Want to learn how to supersize your savings using coupons?
Then join our live coupon chat at 1 p.m. Wednesday with savings expert and couponing teacher Mary Pat Pankoke, right, and learn easy tips and tricks that will significantly slash your monthly grocery bills. I saved more than $100 at Publix on my last grocery trip and you can, too, with a little know-how and effort.
Bring your all your couponing questions and learn the basic principals of couponing. Some of the topics we'll cover today:
Clipping: How to combine manufacturer, store and competitor coupons to score items for free, especially on buy-one-get-one free sales (BOGOs); using competitor coupons to make money; how to find the best deals and match-up; the best sources for finding coupons.
Organizing: Binder or box? Discussion on the different systems used to file and find your coupons and how to file and find them quickly.
Buying: How to organize your coupons and purchases at the register; how to play the drugstore rewards game and make money.
Pankoke is co-owner of CouponClasses.com, a South Florida business specializing in teaching families how to stretch their grocery budget by using coupons.
As we all gear up for back-to-school shopping, we decided to ask three of Shop-O-Matic's super savers to show us how they save on groceries and give us a few tips and tricks on how to score free and cheap school supplies. Use these techniques combined with Florida's tax holiday on Aug. 12-14 to save even more.
The SunSentinel gave $10 each to Mary Pat Pankoke of Parkland, Dana Potgieter of Coral Springs and Andrea Mass of Boca Raton, then let them shop for a week to see how much in classroom supplies they could individually purchase. They returned with more than $600 in school supplies for under $30! The Sun Sentinel Super Shoppers offer fabulous tips on how to save big on groceries by using coupons. Use what you save to buy other things you need, like school supplies.
Pankoke, Potgieter and Mass all exclusively shop at Publix for groceries because of the chain's generous coupon policy. You can save the most there, they say, because you can use a manufacturer coupons, store coupons and competitor coupons combined to get items for free or sometimes you even make money on certain items. Click here to read more about the Publix coupon policy. Also, find out which competitor coupons are accepted at your neighborhood store. (Mostly it's Winn-Dixie, Target, Doris Italian Market, Joseph's Classic Market and Whole Foods.)
Here's a few sources for getting coupons to start super-sizing your savings:
SunSentinel Sunday newspaper: Your best source of coupons is the Sunday paper. Here's a coupon for 50 cents off a Sunday paper. It expires on Sept. 30. Buy at least two to combine with buy-one-get-one free (BOGO) sales.
Online coupons: Coupons.com is a great source of manufacturer and Publix coupons.
Publix coupons: Be sure to grab the monthly slick flyers "Sail Into Savings" (personal-care items) and "Publix Back to School" (grocery items). They're usually in a kiosk as you enter the store. You can get many items for free or even make money using these coupons combined with manufacturer and competitor coupons.
Enjoy the City savings books: These cost $20 and are a great source of $5-off coupons for Winn-Dixie and Joseph's Classic Markets. There are editions for Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Orlando. There are also valuable savings at Chick-fil-A (!) and other great dining and entertainment coupons.

Look forward to watching more dumpster diving for coupons on TLC.
The cable network has renewed the hit series "Extreme Couponing" for a second season, ordering 12 new episodes of the clipping-and-saving reality show set to return in September. There are two episodes left this season.
The reality show, which airs in back-to-back episodes at 9 p.m. Wednesdays, has turned coupon-clipping into a pop-culture phenomenon. This week's new show, on at 9:30 p.m., features an Ohio woman with a family of nine scoring $3,100 of groceries for less than $100.
The debut season has featured women dumpster diving for coupon inserts and shows tense moments at the register as the supersavers clip and shop their way to massive stockpiles of food and toiletry items. The show routinely features women making gigantic grocery grabs for dozens of items they score for next to nothing by stacking coupons, getting everything from frozen pizzas to mustard and Maalox for pennies.
Catch up when TLC airs an "Extreme Couponing" marathon at 3 p.m. on June 16.

I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing several South Florida shoppers yesterday for a Sun Sentinel story in today's paper about the new Publix coupon policy and how they save big bucks on groceries and gas. Here are their tips:
Dana Potgieter of Coral Springs says you can supersize your savings at the grocery store by doing these five things:
1. Subscribe to at least two newspapers to take advantage of buy-one-get-one (BOGO) sale items and stacking two coupons for the items. 2. Know your local store’s policies. 3. Follow a good coupon and savings website such as IHeartPublix.com and TotallyTarget.com. “Let them do the research for you.” 4. Print online coupons from SmartSource.com, RedPlum.com and Coupons.com. 5. Take advantage of competitor coupons online and through the mail that are accepted at your local store.
Andrea Mass, of Boca Raton, racks up similar savings on groceries and gas with these tips: 1. Get 2 copies of the paper on Sunday (and get inserts from friends and family too) and save the inserts. I don't even bother clipping anymore, I just file by date and then
wait for the sales and the coupons to line up (there is usually a good sale on a product within a month after the coupon comes out). 2. I try to only shop at one or two stores. The sale cycle is about 12 weeks so don't worry about getting every deal, they'll come back around. Also, with regard to the 12 week sale cycle, I only buy what my family needs to last those 12 weeks, that way when I need cereal (or whatever) I already bought it at the best price ad don't need to run out and buy it at full price. By the same token I don't shelf clear or buy things we don't need (like 70 jars of mustard). 3. Whenever Publix runs the sale of $10 off the $50 gas card [offered in early May], I buy the Shell card and then redeem it at the pump using Winn-Dixie fuelperks!.” 4. The new coupon policy at Publix: It’s nothing I wasn’t already doing, but now the cashiers and I are on the same page. My budget is $200 a month and I feed a family of five on that. I get about $1,000 worth of food a month. We eat healthy, organic and mostly kosher. I keep an Excel spreadsheet to track savings.”

Publix's new coupon policy goes into effect today and stores have posted a list of competitors' coupons they will accept: Doris Italian Market, Target, Whole Foods Market and Winn-Dixie. The new policy is posted on Publix.com. We have a handy list of links below where you can get $5-off coupons and more to stack up the savings. (This week, I saved more than $102 on my grocery bill using coupons from the Sunday Sun Sentinel and prints from the Internet.)
In addition to the posted signs in stores, each Publix also will accept coupons from nearby competitors. Individual stores will decide what nearby competitor coupons also will be accepted, so be sure to stop at the service desk to ask what additional coupons will be accepted (and then share them with us in the comments!).
You can really stack up the savings by using up to two coupons now: A manufacturer coupon, a Publix coupon or a competitor coupon.
Here's are links to Publix and some accepted competitor coupons: Publix Doris Italian Market (Sign up and get a $5 off a $50 purchase coupon good for a month.) What competitor coupons is your store accepting? Please post in the comments section (along with the location) and I'll add links to the list.

The coupon is good for 30 days, so you can use it multiple times. Just print a few extra copies.

Pulbix has posted a sign in its stores and is handing out flyers with the new coupon policy and a list of competitors' coupons it will accept beginning Monday, May 23: Doris Italian Market, Target, Whole Foods Market and Winn-Dixie. The new policy was posted on Publix.com on Tuesday.
In addition to the posted signs, each Publix will also accept coupons from nearby competitors. The Publix I shop at on Commercial Boulevard and Dixie Highway in Oakland Park will be accepting Albertson's $5 off coupons because that store is l right across the street. I get an Albertson's mailer with a $5 off $50 purchase coupons nearly every Wednesday. These can be stacked with Publix coupons.
Publix has said that individual stores will decide what nearby competitor coupons also will be accepted, so be sure to stop at the service desk to ask what additional coupons will be accepted (and then share them with us in the comments!).

UPDATE: Publix has published its new coupon policy on its website at Publix.com. The policy is effective on Monday. Find it listed under the "Coupons" tab. It's identical to the policy the company announced via e-mail on May 18. Click here to read it. -- Doreen Christensen
Publix has adopted a written coupon policy effective May 23 at more than 1,000 stores, the company announced Wednesday.
Publix Coupon Policy - effective May 23:
"Publix accepts manufacturers’ coupons (limit one per item), Publix coupons (originals only—no copies), valid Internet coupons, and coupons from nearby competitors identified by each Publix store. (Competitor names are posted at each Publix store.) We will accept coupons from competing pharmacies for prescriptions only. We will not accept percent-off-items or percent-off-total-order coupons. We will only accept coupons for identical merchandise we sell. Acceptance is subject to any restrictions on the coupon and we reserve the right to limit quantities. Manager approval is needed for individual coupons above $5.00. For a buy-one-get-one free (BOGO) offer, each item is considered a separate sale. We will accept a manufacturer’s coupon and either a Publix or a competitor coupon on the same item. Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one Publix and one competitor coupon per order. The order total must be equal to or greater than the total purchase requirements indicated on the coupon(s) presented."
The move is designed to reduce customer frustration and create consistency among stores.
“For some time now, customers have been asking us what our coupon policy is,” said Kimberly Jaeger, media and community relations manager for the Lakeland-based grocery chain. They have asked for consistency among stores and guidelines for general coupon usage. However, the chan
