$20 off $75 at Office Depot

Keep those coupons flying, retailers, we love them. Just got a notice about $20 off $75 at Office Depot. Warning, it's huge, an ink guzzler! Click here to print the monster, good until 7/11.

I was going to use it for a wireless keyboard and mouse, but thanks to Pauline's post below, I won't have to go out in the rain. It's not good for technology products. Bummer. I need some more patience to read the fine print.

The coupon won't work with HP printer ink, but I called Office Depot and they tell me it is good for other brands. Might be a good time to stock up on ink so you can print more money saving (ink guzzling) coupons.

Jeans $19.99 at Gap!

jeans.jpg

"Selected" women's and men's jeans are on sale for $19.99, regularly $49.50-$69.50, at The Gap, stores only.

Who knows if these jeans are wide bellbottoms or so skinny tight you have to squeeze into them? But it's worth a look at that price! Besides, jeans are The Gap's specialty so they have a big variety.

Of course, It's hard to think of wearing jeans in this 90-plus degree heat. Jean shorts, maybe? -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Cheap hair dryer: Revlon Ionic 1875-watt hairdryer for $2.99

walgreens.jpgI read about this $2.99 hairdryer on DealSeekingMom tonight, thought it was too good to be true, so I ran to the all-night Walgreens in my neighborhood to give it a try. I'd hate to tell you about something that didn't work, plus my hairdryer was taking its last breaths.

It's on sale for $12.99 and you get $10 in Register Rewards. You pay the $12.99, but you get $10 back to spend in Walgreens. It worked...but make sure you get the pink model.

While I was in the store, seriously, there was an armed robbery at nearby Winn-Dixie in Rio Vista. All of the sudden the intersection in front of Walgreens was crawling with cop cars, all with their lights blinking.

As my imagination raced with visions of being taken hostage by the desperate fugitives, I wondered why I didn't heed the advice I always gave my kids concerning curfew, "Nothing good ever happens after midnight."

More about eBay from Super Saver Kathy

flyingcloud8x.jpgSpeaking of eBay...a few posts ago I mentioned that there are good deals to be had right now.

It's also a great place to get rid of clutter in your house and pick up some pocket change. Do you have Aunt Clara's teapot gathering dust on your sideboard or a series of children's books that your college age child never read? Guess what, chances are he's not going to read them now, and 'like new' are magic words.

If you read my bio, you know that I have a pesky little car that won't let me drive by a yard sale. Should I be embarassed to admit that the file cabinets I can finally organize my coupons in came from a spec house sale...she was asking $15 each, honestly. Half kidding I offered two for $25 and she took it...she was ready to go home. They look brand new and side by side could pass for a sideboard in my dining room. I covered them with a raffia runner from Pottery Barn that cost more than the file cabinets!

What do you think of the Wedgwood china I bought at a moving sale last weekend? Handsome isn't it? I loved it, but got buyers remorse when I tried to put it away at home. Can't pass up a deal, but what was I thinking? It's already on eBay, getting bids, and if I make any money on it, I might get that iPod I've been considering.

New find for women's clothing, jewelry at Mizner Park

Francesa%20top.jpg

If you visit Mizner Park in Boca Raton tonight for its Cinco de Mayo celebration, stop by the Francesca's boutique near Starbucks. I recently discovered this store, unusual for Mizner Park, in that the clothing and jewelry in the store is different and isn't expensive.

I liked many of the colorful tops, such as the one above, and dresses, as well as $12 belts and two for $20 earrings. Dresses are $34-$44 and tops around $30-$35. The shop has lots of fun gifts as well. I spied a bride-to-be picking up some fun items for her bridesmaids for wedding shower fun.

Blue Bell Ice Cream on sale at Albertsons

bluebell1.jpgEver since we wrote about Blue Bell Ice Cream in the Sun Sentinel, I've been wanting to try it. Now that I'm couponing, it's hard to pay $5.98 for a half gallon of ice cream when I can get sales and BOGOs on other brands.

So I have avoided buying it, until tonight. I was getting other things in Albertsons, walked by the ice cream freezer, which of course they put right near the check-out line, and lo and behold, a Blue Bell sale! Sale lasts thru Tuesday, April 28th.

No coupons, but it was 2 half gallons for $7, enough savings to get me to cheat again on the old diet. Was it worth it? I have to say yes, the ice cream is very creamy and the Pralines were sooooo crunchy. Mmmmm...I might have to try the Cookies and Cream next. Super Saver Kathy

Michelle Obama look: Save up to 45 percent off at Talbots.com

Talbots has a great online deal right now. You can get 25 percent off selected items on the Web site.

And, according to an email I got from the company, you can get an extra 20 percent off if you add the code 026970183. One caveat: I wasn't buying and I couldn't check through the site without making a purchase. Try it and let me know if it works.

I fell in love with this sexy sleevless dress with zip. It was $169 and is $126.75 with the first discount of 25 percent. It comes in Espresso or Safari Tan in sizes 4 to 20. It's fully lined in a mixed fabric of polyester/cotton/metallic.

I'd buy one -- but you need Michelle Obama arms to look good. Alas, those days are gone.

$9 off Huggies diapers at Costco with purchase of Huggies wipes

huggies.jpgI told my daughter if she went back to school, I'd help her with groceries, hence my coupon-mania. With two toddlers, the expensive diapers are breaking me!!!

That wonderful Huggies $5 coupon / Walgreens Reward deal was huge, but sadly it's over. When there are no deals out there, I get them at Costco, where they cost 23 cents each. Stopped in today to stock up, and the nice cashier told me about the Costco $9 diaper coupon in the Costco savings book. You had to buy both Huggies diapers and wipes to get $9 off the total purchase.

1000 wipes, $23.99 and 176 diapers, $40.49. Minus the $9. Okay folks, this is where you should join in and tell us where to get a better deal. Anyone?

Free 60-day shopping pass to BJ's Wholesale Club

Bloomingdales 40% off sale starts Tuesday 3/31/09

laurne.jpgI was driving to Coral Gables to celebrate my niece's graduation when I got caught in the worst traffic on I-95 for an hour and a half, with no let up in sight.

I figured I missed the dinner, so I turned around and lo and behold, my car exited at 'Ives Dairy Road' all by itself. It drove me to Bloomingdale's at Aventura. I think it thought, "let's not drive all this way for nothing."

Bloomingdale's is having a big sale starting Tuesday, additional 40% off, but the cute salesgirl told me I could pre-buy at the sale price. My new BFF.

I bought a Lauren dress, and two classic and versatile Lauren sweaters. I can't take them home until Tuesday, but they will ship free since I spent over $100, and I got an additional $25 off $100 for using my Bloomingdale's card. Long story short, I got $420 worth of nice classic clothes for $150.

I know...still not cheap, but I'm going to a family wedding in April, and I feel like my wardrobe is tired. Who wants to join me in a big backyard bonfire for tired clothes?

A real strategic shopper will combine these items with manufacturers coupons and take full advantage of the savings. The cool thing is you can use one coupon for each item, even the free one. Every once in a while you get a grumpy cashier who won't allow it, but most do. We learn who the grumpy cashiers are, fast, and avoid their lines.

Download DING to get notice of cheap airfares from Southwest Airlines

ding_screen.gifHave you been hearing about the great airfares available as a result of this economy? I'm going to Ohio to a wedding in April and I sure didn't get much of a deal on airfare to Dayton.

There are good deals out there if you can find them. I signed up for the Spirit Air $9 Club, and get emails with great offers if you want to go where and when their offer is available. I jumped on a $1 ticket to NYC in May, which cost me $25 round trip after all the fees.

A co-worker, Justin, a frequent traveler, tells us he downloaded DING from the the Southwest Airlines website...which you can then check daily for their latest offers. If you are in the mood for a vacation, and aren't committed to where and when, this might be a fun way to plan an impromptu trip.

Justin also says, "I'd also suggest www.kayak.com for finding cheap hotels/flights/rental cars. It's awesome! I generally run my email specials up against the kayak results to get my airfare."

Tell us where you are going these days. Any good deals?

Bargain brands touted by Today show

Topshop.jpg

Caught the Today show this morning and a Glamour magazine editor was showing where to find affordable brands from retailers.

One was a military-type jacket that could be worn to the office or anywhere from the Topshop, a British retailer.

There was a strapless red flowered dress for $39 at Newport News, which often has great discounts.

And Madewell, which is owned by J. Crew, but no stores in South Florida.

And Liz Claiborne New York, renvented by Issac Mizrahi. I liked the wear-anywhere $99 dress with a black top and striped skirt from Liz Claiborne.

Tommy Bahamas sample sale!

Tommy-Bahama.jpg

I love Tommy Bahamas clothes, but they're a bit pricey. The solution? Go to a sample sale.

A Tommy Bahama Sample Sale is being held this Saturday and Sunday (March 21 and 22), from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Miami Seaquarium on Key Biscayne. I spied this deal on SocialMiami.com.

The site says the sale features men's t-shirts and woven shirts in size large only and shorts and pants in waist size 34. There is no charge to attend the event, and shoppers will receive $7.50 off the price of admission to Miami Seaquarium. So take the kids!

Buy a suit, get a refund if laid off

bank%20suit.bmp

It pays to be dressed well whether working or looking for work.

Jos. A. Bank, a men's clothing retailer with eight stores in South Florida, is taking a cue from Hyundai, according to sister Tribune Co. paper The Baltimore Sun:

Buy a suit during its $199 sale March 16 to April 9; if you happen to get laid off from your job, Jos. A. Banks says it will refund up to $199, if you can show proof you've lost your job between April 16 and July 1.

And you can keep the suit!

In January, Hyundai announced a similar promotion, saying would take back cars from people who lose their jobs, suffer a physical disability or are self-employed and forced into bankruptcy. The carmaker said it will let customers return cars within a year of the purchase, and the company will cover $7,500 worth of depreciation.

It's nice to see businesses being responsive to their customers' plights in this job market. It's bound to be a policy that rewards a retailer wih future business.-- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

60% clearance sale at Loehmann's

There it was on a rack with yesterday's fashion news: a dark brown Elie Tahari structured jacket, marked down from more than $200 to $58 with another 60 percent off!

I should have grabbed it and ran to checkout at Loehmann's yesterday in Boca Raton, but my new-found sensiblity caught hold. Do I really need the jacket? Did I have anything to wear it with? Wasn't it really too warm and dark for South Florida?

So, sadly, I returned it to the rack and bought what I went there for in the first place, discount hose.

But the clearance sale goes on at Loehmann's. Hmmm...maybe I should check another store today. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Dell mini netbook $249

laptop-inspiron-9-hero-dual.jpgI sit in close proximity to one of the biggest computer/electronics geeks in the Sun-Sentinel newsroom. He is so into cell phones, computers, stereos, etc, I wish I could learn from him by osmosis, but my brain is not made that way.

Last night he was marveling aloud, about a Dell computer advertisement, that the new Dell Mini had come down to $249, including an Unbuntu Linux operating system, and a 4GB harddrive. He might as well be speaking Chinese, but I'm excited about the price decrease...I understand that language.

I occasionally travel on buddy passes with a flight attendant friend. She packs her netbook to check schedules, delays, look up restaurants etc, when she is working a trip. She wraps it in a padded case and tosses it in her wheelie carry-on. No cumbersome full-size laptop handling in security. When I discovered hers, an Asus, they were starting at $399. Now they are getting more in my price range.

I'll be looking for sales now that I know they are more affordable. Let me know if you see something, and I'll do the same.

Shoes: Buy new or repair?

DSW%20sandals.jpg

When is it time to hang up a pair of shoes? Perhaps when they turn into tap shoes.

I wore my favorite Ann Klein black slides to the office last week and heard a "tap, tap, tap" as I walked. Sure enough, I had worn my heels through to the nails.

I thought about repairing. Fellow blogger Kathy tells me she just spent $17 to replace that itsy bitsy rubber piece on her heels. While it might be worth it for shoes otherwise unworn, my poor Ann Kleins were goners.

So off I drove to DSW in Boca Raton where I found some replacement Ann Kleins, not sandals but fairly comfortable high heels, on sale for $35. Of course, I still needed to replace my sandals. I found Aerosole's What's What brand, comfortable yet still stylish black slides also on sale for $35.

Florida residents: Free annual pass to Miami Seaquarium with each paid entry

dolphin.jpg
A Valentine's present can be flowers, candy, sexy lingerie, or when in doubt, there's always jewelry, my personal favorite.

But the ultimate gift is a nice long chunk of your time, and a special day together. The Miami Seaquarium on Key Biscayne has a special for the month of February. Florida residents can buy one full fare admission and get a years pass for free.

The admission is pricey (Adults $38.47, $28.84 children 3-9) but if you would enjoy going often, then this is a deal! Parking is $8, not covered by the pass.

Annual pass holders get a $30 discount on a swim with the dolphins, a very special Valentine's gift, usually $199.

Miami Metro Zoo also has zoo memberships, which give you free unlimited admission for a year.

Look for cheap eats

Dennys.jpg

You've probably heard of Denny's publicity stunt (photo by USA Today): Yesterday it offered a free breakfast and a reported two million people stood in line, even in cold weather, to get their Grand Slam.

I've been writing about taking my lunch to work, but when I do go out now, I look for a deal. Duffy's, for example, is offering its "afternoon break," 40 percent off meals from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. to all its MVP card members year round. Cost nothing to sign up for Duffy's frequent visitor card and you can accumulate points toward free meals.

Check the chains but also don't ignore your struggling neighborhood restaurant. I had a $7 lunch the other day at Japanese Village Hibachi Steakhouse, 350 E. Las Olas Blvd., in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant is a great place to go with a friend. I'd recommending sitting with others at the Hibachi table and ordering the chicken or steak Hibachi, which is prepared with fanfare by the chef in front of you.

Go to Nina's Discounts in Tamarac for batteries

Part of the orientation into Tamarac life is being told about Nina's Discounts, 7112 N University Drive, on the corner of McNab and University.

The kind employees at Nina's have been taking care of Tamarac for 20 years. Need a battery replaced? Extra copies of house keys? Have a broken necklace? How do you like the idea of getting 2 greeting cards for a dollar? Head to Nina's.

My mother turned me on to Nina's when she moved to an adult community in Tamarac. I'm out that way when I visit her, so I can't tell you how many batteries they have replaced for me. My Waterford crystal clocks, a friend's Gucci watch, my grandson's Swiss Army watch, my Turnpike Sunpass.

The magic number seems to be $1 for a new battery, including installation, but the most I've paid was this morning, when they fixed my dead Sunpass for $3. Now I'm ready for another trip.

Boca Bargoons fabrics 40% off

Boca Bargoons used to be among my favorite haunts with my friend Lynn. She was an artist and could turn a plain living room into lush landscape of fabric and decor in a day. Twice, she recovered my dining room chairs and my patio furniture.

I asked her once to show me how and I would do it myself. "I don't have the patience," she said. Anyway, I benefited from her flair and expertise.

Free make-up starting January 20th

There are rumors swirling about free make-up on January 20th, not just vague rumors, but emails, website postings, news articles. The messages are mixed as to who or what, but the truth is...there will be free make-up.

Here's the nitty gritty: There was a class action lawsuit against stores and manufacturers for price fixing, apparently there was a conspiracy to hold some products to drive up the prices, so the companies are court ordered to give away $175 million in products, starting on Jan. 20th, until supplies run out.

I called Dillards at the Galleria and was told customers must have a card, or piece of paper, to prove they were part of the lawsuit, to get the products. But all over the web, there are postings that say the stores are going to take your word for it.

Have a look at the class action suit website. There are only some products that will be free. The rampant rumor mill has women worked up for free make-up...the truth is, there is only one Chanel product and very specific items in other lines. I suspect we will find out who gives away what starting tomorrow. It can't hurt to swing by Macy's or Dillards to see what's up.

Look for deals at Circuit City i.e. Guitar Hero

I almost hate to report good deals and sales at Circuit city under the circumstances...I'm sure you've seen it on the news, or read it in the Sun-Sentinel, that Circuit City is closing its stores. Not a good time for 34,000 people to be out looking for jobs, my heart goes out to them.

If you have a Circuit City gift card, use it immediately. It is good during the liquidation, but once the stores close, it will be useless. The rule of thumb in this economy is not to stockpile any gift cards from any stores, no matter how healthy you might think they are.

The markdowns are starting immediately, and the savings will increase as time goes on. For instance, the sale price for the wii Guitar Hero is $39.95 down from $69.95.

REMINDER - Friday's the big day - Filene's Bridal gown Sale - Aventura

We wrote about the 'Running of the Brides' last week, but in case you missed our post, it's worth a reminder. The infamous wedding dress sale starts at 8am Friday morning at the new Filenes at 17651 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura Florida.

Brides will come from all over the state, and probably NY, NJ, even the island of Jamaica, in hopes to find the dress of their dreams at a fraction of the price. There will be 1400 gowns, sizes 2-26, from designers and famous name bridal houses. They will be priced at $249, $499, and $699. At retail these dresses would cost between $900 and $10,000.

The doors open at 8am, expect a rush to the racks, so bring a friend, and grab what you can. You can trade later. Chaos reigns, followed by shrieks of excitement, and finally tears and applause as each bride finds THE ONE.

Best wishes to you.

SanDisk 4GB SDHC Media Card 9.77 with free shipping at Buy.com

sandisk.jpg

As you can imagine, the Sun-Sentinel Photography staff needs reliable equipment, and this can get expensive. We are always looking for the best prices to keep the staff adequately supplied.

The buy.com weekly specials are worth watching. This week they have a great deal on SanDisk 4GB SDHC cards (SanDisk 4GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Card - SDSDB-4096-A11.) They are usually $39.99...this week they are $9.77 with free shipping.

A word of caution: older digital cameras do not support higher capacity cards, they require SD cards, not SDHC. Make sure your camera is SDHC compliant before you order one. I made this mistake when I went to Italy last fall. I wanted to be able to shoot unlimited pictures, so I stocked up on media cards before I left. (It's time consuming, and wears on your battery to keep deleting the bad pictures to free up card space, I prefer to do that when I get home.) When I inserted the 4GB SDHC card, the camera blinked a flashing message of rejection, the card, not me!! Thank goodness I had others!

A second word of caution: With buy.com, as with any online free shipping deals, be very careful as you check out, that you select the free shipping option. Often the order form defaults to a higher shipping price, and if you don't take the extra step to find the free shipping option, you will be in for an unpleasant surprise when you get the invoice.

Has that happened to you? Do you get that 'ripped off' feeling, when a website advertises free shipping, then charges for it because you didn't know to select that option?

Chico's travels well

Chicos%20jacket.jpg

When my sister had a business trip to India last year, she turned to Chico's travel collection for clothes that would cover tall frame, not wrinkle and look professional.

Besides being wary about travel conditions and restrictions, women need to be careful not to offend the culture they are visiting. Often that means covering up.

Chico's is having its winter sale, up to 75 percent, off on many items: sweaters, buttoned shirts, pants, jackets, and its travel collection. The store's jewelry is also discounted, with some 50 percent off if you buy one item at full price.

But that's OK. I found two dresses at Macy's Wellington store today and bought both for less than $100. Neither is black, which is a surprise, but both are more versatile than the Anne Klein, anyway. I just booked a ticket to NY from Ft Lauderdale, $1 each way, with taxes and fees the round trip ticket was $25. It was only available for a few days in May. I don't know where I will be in May, but for $25, I think I'll be in NY!

Right now they are advertising $8 each way to Atlanta from FLL, available a few dates in January. I can't afford not to go.

Just remember, Spirit makes it's money on the poor suckers who show up after the 45 minute cut off time for their flights. If you book a Spirit ticket, make sure you get to the airport an hour before the flight with a pre-printed boarding pass in hand. After the 45 minute mark, they don't let you on your booked flight, but send you to the 'sucker' line to pay $200+ to rebook another flight at last minute rates.

Spirit fares good through 12/25/2008.

Last minute? Find online shopping deals

If you're afraid of the malls and your relatives live in Wisconsin, online shopping beckons this weekend. Here are some ideas and deals:

For your young nephew or niece or grandchild: Amazon.com has toys 70 percent off and free shipping during the holidays.

For the tech nerd in your life: Cellphoneshop.net has some good deals on Bluetooths and car chargers.

For any woman who loves movies: Mamma Mia hands down the best chick flick of the year. Meryl Streep is unforgettable. The DVD is $24.49 on Amazon.com and $2.50 less on BarnesandNoble.com if you have a B&N membership.

For most anyone on your list: From a children's book to intellectual fare, I bought more books than any other gift this year using my 10 percent membership discount from Barnes and Noble, which also sent me a 15 percent coupon for one-time use.

For the youngster or teen: DVDs are always good. Wall-E for the youngsters and The Dark Knight for teens and up (a creepy Batman movie, be warned).

Dressy dresses 50% off at Macy's

Macy%27s%20little%20black%20dress.jpg

With New Year's Eve around the corner, this is the time to look for evening dress sales. Macy's 50 percent off sale -- some already 50 percent off on clearance -- is a pleasant surprise. Check it out this weekend. You never know when you might need a nice dress.

Unfortunately, some thoughtless shopper played a dirty trick on me. I found a magnificent little black dress by Anne Klein on the clearance rack, tried it on and loved it. (One of those dresses that fits like a dream.) But the tag was not marked clearance. Sure enough it wasn't marked down. At $168, sadly I had to pass.

Then, I got home and checked Macys.com and the dress is marked down to $107. Should I splurge? -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Remote control for Christmas tree lights at CVS

Finishing the last strand of lights on my tree, I went to plug them in, only, darn, the last plug was female!! No prongs! Somewhere, one strand inside was backwards. Off to the 24 hour CVS. "Is there a double male adapter for jerks who string their lights backwards and can't plug them in?" I ask.

The next solution...a green extension cord to run up inside the tree to the orphan prongs. The green extension cord is $7.99. As you may know if you read this blog, I am a big fan of the CVS Extra Care discounts and coupons, so I check my stash and there it is, a coupon for $5 off $15 in Holiday Decor! Looking at the wide array of lighting accessories, I spot a tree lights remote control. An indulgence, yes, but now it's become a matter of saving, not spending! Right?

I got home, rigged the lights with the new extension cord, and plugged it into the wall outlet via the new remote plug. Then I sat on the couch and pushed the 'on' button on the transmitter. WOW! It worked!!

Monday, CVS emailed their new ad with another coupon, this time it was for $3 off $10 in holiday decor good thru 12/22. Did you get yours? I would love to post one for you, but CVS won't send Shop-O-Matic generic coupons. You must have your own CVS Extra Care card to get them. "Maybe I'll get a remote for Mom," I think. And my newly married nephew. Combining sales with coupons = strategic shopping.

Long story longer, I went back to CVS, bought the $15.99 remotes on sale for $10.71, and with the -$3 coupon they were $7.71, plus tax. Shhh, don't tell CVS, but the good thing about getting the coupons via email is that you can print multiples.

Guess How many remotes I bought?

If you don't have a CVS Extra Care card, I highly recommend it for savings. You can get one in the store or sign up online. And give them your email address so they can send you printable coupons.

Seldom Seen returns and other Las Olas tidbits

Vera%20Bradley.png

I was crushed earlier this fall when I walked past Seldom Seen, one of my favorite stores on Las Olas Boulevard, and there was a big sign of the times: Bankruptcy Sale.

Seldom Seem "reopens under new management," apparently, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, according to a new sign in the window.

All the same great stuff seems to be in the window. Seldom Seen has always been the place to go when you were looking for that perfect gift for someone, but had no idea what to buy. Walk into the store and there it was! Welcome back, Seldom Seen.

In other Las Olas news, I found these great Vera Bradley "Zip ID" case -- just enough room for a license, lipstick and your car keys. Only $10 at Needlepoint Originals. Great holiday present for colleagues or girlfriends.

Other Vera Bradley older styles and colors are 25 percent off at the store (but I'm not supposed to tell you that. Shhhh...) -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Inexpensive gift idea - battery operated candles

Amazon.jpg
I went to dinner at a friend's the other night, outside under the stars. She said she couldn't keep candles burning outside with the Florida breezes, so she had small frosted votives with battery operated flickering candles at each place setting. The effect was lovely, and drew comments from everyone.

Saturday I had a few folks over to enjoy the boat parade, outside on a cool crisp evening. The group included my toddler grandkids. I knew they might get into trouble with real candles, so I copied my friend's idea and used the battery operated ones. Again, compliments.

Now, maybe you have been using battery operated candles for years? I, for one, have seen them in stores and thought they were gimmicky. Now that I've enjoyed them in different settings, I'm hooked. And I intend to get a few as gift items.

My friend got hers at Stein Mart. The nearest Stein Mart is far away from me, there's a CVS nearby, so guess where I got mine, 6 for $5. (I used a $5 off $15 in Holiday items Extra Care coupon that came on a CVS register receipt, so they were an even better deal.) Not as nice, but once you put them in a nice frosted votive, it's the glow that counts.

You can be thrifty or extravagant with the votive. The candles and votives pictured are from Amazon.com.

Designer handbags a deal at TJ Maxx

I've been to New York City and back looking high and low for the right purse. I needed a plain black purse, but I'm a little fussy. I want one where I can easily access my cell phone. It has to fit a reporter's notebook. It can't be too boring and it has to be well under $100.Kathy%20purse.jpg

Finally, I swung by TJ Maxx at 3722 N. Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point and found a great selection of handbags, many designer names including B Makowsky, Juicy Couture and Steve Madden. I chose a Kathy Van Zeeland for only $39.99; I saw similar purses on sale at department stores for twice as much.

My purse is similar to the one at right, but with a little more bling.

The store also had freshwater pearls for $14.99 and holiday wrapping paper for $3.99 a roll.

So TJ Maxx's motto of "Economize don't Compromise" holds up. And some breaking news:I overheard store managers say they're putting out newer handbags on Saturday (Dec. 6). I just couldn't wait any longer. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Coupon ~ $5 off Honey Baked Ham

For all you recessionistas out there, a Honey-Baked ham might be out of the question, at $49.95 for a 6 pound ham.

NYC holiday markets beat department stores

Holiday%20markets.jpg

If you're foolish enough, like me, to head to frigid New York City on a winter holiday, at least visit the many holiday markets the city has to offer.

I went to the one at Union Square where I found painted cooper earrings by Bora from Greece for only $20 and a lovely silk-strewn necklace with a cascade of small gems for $47. You'll also find Christmas decor, unique leather goods and lots of fun gifts for children at the Holiday Market.

Similar markets can be found at Bryant Park, where you also can ice skate, Grand Central and Columbus Circle. So, wherever you land in the city, there is a holiday market to shop.

The markets feature booths from stores around Manhattan as well as the outreaches and independent vendors. While I wouldn't count on a return policy, I found the shopping experience more fun and interesting than the overcrowded department stores with faux sales (20 percent off and only $800!).

South Florida retailers might do well to copy this NYC idea. After all, our weather is much more conducive to outside shopping. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Where are you shopping on Black Friday?

zshopping25-2.jpg
Been thinking about Black Friday, trying to decide what's my plan. I don't know about you, but 5am is not fun in my book. I'd rather pay double than get up at 4am!!

If I shop on Black Friday, it will be at Sawgrass Mills, or one of the other stores that will open at midnight on Thursday for the shopping frenzy. Right now I am buried in notes...trying to figure out what I might buy, and where I need to go to get it. I can't shop in that bedlam unless I'm organized.

A website that tries to make sense out of Black Friday for the consumer is BFAds.net. It has links for advertised sales, store hours, buying guides for laptops, televisions, GPS devices, and more. There are also message boards where you can post questions or past experiences and advice.

You can even register and work up a personal shopping list. And BFAds.net promises not to sell or share your email address. I'll bet they wind up with a lot of useful data though.

Holiday cosmetics specials last all year long

If you buy right, you might not have to buy makeup all year long. I'm still using the eye shadow from a holiday Estee Lauder special from a year ago.

On my shopping list this weekend are some warm jammies. Not only has it been a little chilly lately for this reborn Floridian, I occasionally head north during the holidays where I know I'm going to be freezing my fanny off.

No Victoria's Secret here. Something solid like J.C. Penney. My mother bought me a pair of pajamas a few years ago from JC Penney or Sears -- two department stores reliable for relative gift giving because items can be returned in other cities.

These PJ's look cute, for $24.99 to $28.99. I may look at these and possibly use JC Penney's $10 off coupon this weekend for items $25 and over.

Gift idea for the camera enthusiast in your life

gorillapod-family.jpg
I just got back from a girl's trip to Italy...a college sorority sister restored an old farmhouse in Tuscany (sound familiar?) and threw a magical housewarming party for about 100 of her closest friends!!

Nine of us were UF classmates, trapsing around Italy, reminiscing and laughing hysterically about days of old. I tried to photograph and video the antics, but most often I was laughing so hard, there was no keeping the camera still!!

Have you ever played "go around the table and describe your worst date ever" while consuming massive quantities of Chianti? (Chances are we will never be invited back to that restaurant.)

gpod-pole.jpg

Next time, I'll be prepared. Look at these cool flexible tripods. They will attach to lots of things, or work like a traditional tripod, just to steady the camera when you get the giggles. I'll bet it would hold on to a Chianti bottle neck.

What a cool gift idea for the camera enthusiast in your life. I know I want one....before my next trip!

There are probably lots of flexible tripods out there, a co-worker got his for around $10 at Walmart. I surfed around the Internet and liked these by Joby, called Gorillapods. The smallest one, strong enough to hold a point-n-shoot, sells for $21.95 straight retail, both on Amazon and on Joby's website.

Now if you read this blog, you know we don't like to pay straight retail for anything. So let us know if you come across a better deal!! Hopefully...before I buy mine.
