Macy's is having one of its famous one-day sales on Saturday, Oct. 23, with a preview day today, Friday, Oct. 22.
I hopped online this morning and spied the perfect gift for a certain sister's birthday. With Christmas just around the corner, there are plenty of gift ideas for yourself or others in jewelry, handbags, clothing, and bed and bath.
How about these diamond and sterling silver hoops (that's not what I got you, sis) for $89?
The one-day sale is good in stores and online at Macy's.
I was in New York City last weekend and the weather was in that in-between stage: My leather jacket wasn't quite warm enough some days while a sweater was plenty on a sunny day.
What I needed was a wool-cashmere blend pea coat like this one on sale for $79.99 at J.C. Penney's. It may be too late for me, but if you're planning a trip north for Thanksgiving, such a coat could come in handy. It comes in a variety of colors: blue, red, boysenberry, green and black.
It is among J.C. Penney's "lowest prices of the fall" sale. Many items are in the stores -- even this coat in South Florida -- but there's free shipping online of $49 or more. Go to www.jcpenney.com to check out the deals.
Macy's is having its "Shop for a Cause" annual charity event in stores and online today.
The chain has raised $34 million for local charitable causes since it stared the event in 2006. This is a great way to support worthy causes in your community (you get to pick which one) and get some great bargains for yourself at the same time.
Here's how it works: Buy a $5 Shop for a Cause ticket and get a 20-percent savings pass good all day on clothes, accessories, jewelry and home items, valid on all regular, sale and clearance items. (I saw plenty of "additional-50-percent off" signs in the store this week.) In addition, the pass gets you 10 percent off all furniture, mattresses, rugs, electrics and electronics.
In stores, $5 goes to a South Florida non-profit of your choice. Online, the $5 goes to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, Wounded Warrior Project and Feeding America.

I just picked up a pair of jeans at the new Nordstrom Rack in Boca Raton for $39.99. That's more than I usually pay, but they fit just right.
For those who are willing to pay a bit more, 7 for All Mankind denim for men and women is on sale for $99.97 to $119.97 starting 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7. That compares with "normal" prices of $149-$218. You also can find William Rast women's skinny jeans for $49.97 (usually $155) and MEK denim for men and women for $69.97 (compared with $125-$155.)
Other deals starting Thursday include Kensie women's cozy cardigans for $39.97 and Vicarious by nature men's long-sleeve knit shirts for $39.97. At 73 degrees this morning, it;s starting to feel like fall in South Florida!

Stock up for the holidays: Children's books, games and toys are "buy 1, get 1 50% off" at Barnes and Noble online, BN.com.
Books and games are the best gifts you can buy children, in my opinion.
Barnes and Noble's website takes the guessing out of buying the right book by categorizing them according to age. Have a young grandchild? Now you don't have to guess. Want to buy for a teen? They have suggestions.
This sale is only online, so you'll have to browse the books in the store or "look inside" on line, before choosing that right book for your child or grandchild.
L'Occitane en Provence, one of my fav product lines, has up to 50% off today on select products until 5 p.m.

Chocolate solves all problems. Dark chocolate, especially, which is good for your health.
So don't feel guilty stocking up on Godiva chocolates during its summer sale: up to 50 percent off on select items.
This 27-piece dark chocolate assortment is $23.99, regularly $32. For a something-different Labor Day treat, try Godiva's mint chocolate chip ice cream truffles, only $4.99 on sale.
Get over the "long-weekend-over" blues on Tuesday, by bringing this Tower of Indulgence to the office to share -- regulary $80, now on sale for $39.99. You'll be everyone's friend for at least a week.
The 80% off sign caught my eye at Landau Jewelry, located in the Town Center mall at Boca Raton.
The best deal, though, is the 50% off the "Diamondess" collection: the jewelry is sterling silver and platinum plated. These aren't real diamonds, but you could fool me -- gorgeous sparkle and color.
Moreover, you get a $100 gift certificate for the store for every 50% purchase you make. If you have a special friend's birthday coming up or starting early for Christmas, this is a great deal.
At 50% off, 2-carat studs are $74.50, for example.
IconShoes.com is having an end of season sale, marking down sandals and leather accessories more than 70 percent in some instances.
Every sandal is on sale for $49 (some were priced $325). Handbags, pouches and coin bags all have been marked down, too.
ICON prints awesome images on supple leather shoes, bags and small goods from up-and-coming artists and Masters like Monet and Van Gogh. It made its bones in the fashion world by putting Andy Warhol's Campbell's soup image on leather sneakers.
Exotic flowers including birds of paradise and ginger are on sale for $9.99 at Whole Foods Market. What a great way to brighten your home, and for so little!
Birds of paradise were always my grandmother's favorite flowers. I loved sending her tropical bouquets with the brightly colored orange flowers, often with pink or red ginger.
My mission was lunch at the Boca Raton store when I spotted the sale, but I may be going back this evening. These gorgeous flowers are hard to resist.

One of my favorite spots in Sawgrass Mall in Sunrise is the back room of the Ann Taylor Loft store. When the store has a clearance sale, it really has a clearance sale.
"It has been marked down four times," a store associate told me.
And yet, there items worth buying. My friend E and I did a little retail therapy on Saturday and walked away with quite a few items for little money. I bought two pairs of capris, both dressy enough to wear to work, and a ruffled top for less than $80.
You could find a few items online at Ann Taylor Loft, but there's a much better selection at the outlet store at Sawgrass Mall. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Sometime in my life, I want to own a Diane von Furstenberg dress and Stuart Weitzman shoes.
See Diane von Furstenberg's new dress arrivals at Sak Fifth Avenue. This draped jersey dress is priced at $345 -- not exactly a bargain hunter price, but so nice.
Saks has many of its designer labels on sale, however, including this sundress by Caroline Herrera for $197, marked down from $495.

Lots of other items at decent prices as well so bargain shoppers should not write off Nordstrom's, especially during its half-yearly sale.
Shopping at Nordstrom's also comes with the perk of helpful and friendly sales people. I bought one of the T-shirts for my friend and fellow shopping blogger Kathy and asked for a box. The saleswoman wrapped the shirt in tissue, placed it in a silver box and finished off with a bow. Such service makes shopping so much more fun. -- Marcia "Bargain Hunter" Pounds

Stock up for summer with Lane Bryant's Memorial Day sale. Get 40 percent off shorts and crop pants, as well as 50 percent off activewear, 30 percent off swimwear and $15 camis, tanks and tees. Sister company Calique is offering buy-one-get-one-50 percent off on all bras.
Speaking of bras, the plus-size retailer is showing some serious curvy-girl spunk. Lane Bryant made news last month after Fox and ABC refused to run its hilarious "not for chubbies" lingerie ad spoofing Victoria Secret. The ad shows a blonde skeleton wearing a bra and panties sprawled seductively across a bed. Fox eventually ran the ad during a recent airing of "American Idol." ABC never did.
Meanwhile, the company posted the ad on its blog, Inside Curve, saying, "Millions of supporters have expressed their views in a variety of ways and following is a poignant, albeit humorous work, that speaks to the cause of accepting beauty in all sizes. Share your thoughts and ideas for support!"
OK, back to shopping. Don't forget you can opt to pick up the goods at the store for free, or get $7 flat-rate shipping. No bones about it.

Ken Kaye over at the Storm Center says it's going to be hot and steamy through Sunday. So now's a good time to talk about sweat, or more accurately, how not to sweat.
Dry out with clinical strength antiperspirants. Costing about $10 at drugstores, these products promise the same wetness protection as prescription-only versions.
Sun Sentinel beauty testers liked Secret Clinical Strength, Dove Clinical Protection, Degree Clinical Protection for Men and Women. (Click here to sign up to get a free Secret Clinical Strength.)
Here's how they work: These antiperspirants have a higher concentration of metallic salts than regular versions. You apply them at night when your body temp is at its lowest, and while you sleep, they plug up those sweaty pores under your arms.
The International Hyperhidrosis Society, at SweatHelp.org, says many find relief with these products. According to the website: "The key is learning to use them correctly. A recent study found that applying over-the-counter antiperspirants in the morning and evening, or just in the evening, was significantly more effective than applying them in the morning alone." It's also recommended that you apply the products to completely dry skin.
If you find that the drugstore offerings don't do the trick, talk try a prescription-strength antiperspirants, such as Drysol. It contains 20 percent aluminum chloride and costs $21.98 a bottle. It really works.
Remember, the true trick is applying at night before you go to bed. No sweat.

Get ready to score some serious bargains on cribs, nursery gear, baby equipment, clothes, books, toys, and more at a massive consignment sale being held Coral Springs on Friday and Saturday.
The sale, put on by the traveling children’s and maternity consignment franchise called Just Between Friends, allows you to sell your stuff or shop for stuff and save. Or both! It’s too late to sell items at this event (darn!), but the organization will be back in the fall if you’re interested in selling your goods. You can learn more about the concept and shop till you drop from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Coral Springs Gymnasium at 2501 Coral Springs Drive.
Here’s how JBF events generally work: If you want to sell your stuff, bring new or gently-used kids and/or maternity wear to the selling venue set up by JBF. You set your own prices, tag your wares, drop them off at the sale site and Just Between Friends does the rest. You earn money (just like at a regular consigment store) on unwanted stuff you had lying around the house and/or you can shop for things you need for your family at super cheap prices. It’s a fantastic idea that helps families make and save bucks in these tough times.
If it’s April 16, or rather 4/16 - It’s FourSquare Day, or rather 4sqday.
Bring your phone to this gig. Actually, it’s essential you bring it – it’s your invitation to participate in Foursquare Day, the next big social media party.
Local businesses, mostly eateries and bars, will cash in on the next personal global positioning trend , 4sqday, or Four Square Day.
initiated by a cell phone application of the same name, it allows people to communicate through texts mapping, on where to meet or dine –at a store, a mall, restaurant or a bar – with an event tie-in or just to hang with friends. And like a moving target – the group can move en-mass or simply co-mingle and move about to other venues. People who visit venues repeatedly and more than others in t heir group get designated as “mayors”
However you write it, it spells a trend in face-to-face gatherings. Last year’s Foursquare drew fewer than a million participants. But with people using Twitter and Facebook to detail their every move and activity, 4sqday is expected to grow in venue and consumer participation.
It’s kind of like good-old-fashioned bar-hopping. Except now, the businesses aren’t just passively standing by. They can actively promote their products and services though the same application consumers are using to gather. They can broadcast their 2-4-1 drink deals, freebies or discounts.
Read this article about how Nathan Bonilla-Warford, a Tampa optometrist who is geeky over numbers, came up with the idea of designating 4/16 as 4sqday.

I always liked Swoozie's, the upscale stationary and party store in Boca Raton, but I also wondered how it stayed in business.
Mystery solved: the store's closing, according to sale signs in its windows. So far the biggest savings is on Christmas cards and stationery: 50% off. Other items range from 10% off cards to 30 percent off party-themed items -- gotta a family member's birthday coming up?
