New Big Lots store in Boynton Beach

Want to save big? Big Lots is it.

The company opened a new 17,200-square-foot store in Boynton Beach just days ago. Big Lots is located in the Boynton Beach Promenade at 901 N. Congress Ave.

Big Lots items typically sell for 20 to 40 percent less than discount stores and up to 70 percent below traditional retailers, the company claims in a press release.

The new store carries everyday items, including consumables, non-perishable food items, health and beauty aids, toiletries, diapers, cleaning products, small electronics, housewares, home décor, tools, toys, gifts and one-time closeouts.

Click here for a 20 percent coupon off an entire purchase. It's valid through Saturday, Oct. 10.

Mermaids Purse is moving

cher.jpg

If you have been in downtown Delray lately, you may have noticed that the Mermaids Purse has disappeared.

No, it's not downsizing. It's actually upsizing.

Cut 432, the trendy steak restaurant, is expanding into the Mermaid Purse's old space. The new location for Mermaid's Purse is 424 E. Atlantic Ave., just next door to Lemongrass restaurant. It's three times the size of the old place so the owners have been traveling to find merhcnadise to fill up the place.

Not only are they changing location, they are also changing the name to Posh!. The store will still carry fashion jewelry and hard-to-find handbags like Mary Frances. The ambiance will also be the same. Yes, as always, expect to hear Cher's voice blasting in the background and customers dancing while they stroll through the store.

The Grand Opening will be Thursday, May 7, in time for Jazz on the Avenue. A ribbon cutting event will be hosted and emceed at 8 p.m. by Latrice Royale. Complementary hors d' oeuvres and wine will be served. There will also be sales and door prizes.

World of Decor: Bargains and high style

whimsical2.jpg

I have seen the ads for World of Decor and was really curious about what they are all about so I went this weekend to check it out.

The photos I found on the Website are somewhat misleading -- these are the funky things that they have in the back of the Deerfield Beach store along with pirates and a giant Buddha.

But overall, the showroom has something for everyone -- from those seeking an accessory to someone in a Boca McMansion looking for a huge chandelier or a massive fireplace surround.

They have bargains like the Shaker styled Crown Mark Collection bedroom -- queen bed, dresser, mirror and nighstand for only $999. I also found a vase about 3 feet tall made of rope and ceramic for only $129 and a gold Buddha head for $89. Way in the back is a well made rectanglar outdoor bar with six bar stools for $999.

But there's also the very high end -- like the Vesta Hills cherry chair for $5,459, the white marblee statute columns to frame a doorway at about $16,000 for the pair and Murano glass chandeliers for $18,000-$20,000.

The store also will create flower displays to order.

The Website also has some good buys that I didn't see in the store. Click here to save up to 75 percent.

The store is located at 545 S. Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach, 954-570-6210.

Filene's Basement opens in Aventura October 15th

filenes1.jpg
I've heard so much about Filene's Basement. Never been there. I am really excited....I'm finally going to get to shop at Filene's Basement! It feels so...so...what's the word...so very cosmopolitan!!

I saw it on Biscayne Blvd the other day as I drove down to Bal Harbor Shops. Wow, my heart jumped...it looked open...too bad...not yet. A freestanding building on the east side of Biscayne. (17651 Biscayne Blvd, Aventura.)

I live and work in Fort Lauderdale, but it seems there are a few reasons to drive south for discount shopping. Loehmann's is down there, and now Filene's.

What do you think? Is Filene's Basement worth getting excited about? Is it all it's cracked up to be? Have any of you shopped there? Is there a good selection? What kind of things do they sell...Designer dresses...Casual clothes? Which do you like better, Loehmanns or Filene's?

What are your favorite stores for finding bargain clothes in South Florida?

Kohl's openings: Win a $1,000 Gift Card

mixer.jpg

It's been a long time coming. You've seen the ads, now you've got the stores.

Kohl's has been bombarding the airwaves with its tempting TV advertisements long before they opened the first SoFla store in Boynton Beach earlier this year. (The reason? Stores often make regional media buys and the coverage area may overlap where there are no stores.)

On Oct. 1, the chain is opening six more stores in our circulation area -- Coconut Creek, Hialeah, Hollywood, Homestead, Kendall and MIramar. For locations. see www.kohls.com/southflorida. Check out the earlybird specials 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 1.

You can try to win the $1,000 Kohl's gift card by visiting any Kohl's from Oct. 1-Oct.11.

Also, Kohl's is selling a wide variety of KitchenAid Cook for the Cure products in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. For example, if you buy this Stand Mixer ($359.99), KitchenAid will donate $50 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. For oither products, KitchenAid will donate 10 percent from the purchase of this product to the foundation.
