Las Olas Art Fair celebrates silver anniversary on Saturday and Sunday

Benitez_Humbertoprint.jpg

The weather cools and the festival season heats up as the 25th annual Las Olas Art Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday.

The venerable downtown Fort Lauderdale fair will feature more than 100 artists from South Florida and 30 states, selling paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry and one-of-a-kind works in every medium.

“I've been preparing for this show a year in advance,” says noted Cuban artist Humberto Benitez, 52. “Las Olas is a very nice show. The food is great, and the music is fantastic. Plus, all the restaurants around Las Olas, how could you go wrong?”

The Coral Gables-based painter says his passion for music and dance fuel his brilliantly colored original acrylics, right, and signed reproductions, which sell for $200 to $56,000.

“The bright colors come from grinding my own pigments. I use a spatula and knife to paint and rarely use a brush,” he says. “I never feature faces. I want people to focus on the movement, not the people in my paintings.”

A fair highlight is the giveaway of “Perpetual Bliss,” a resin and steel sculpture created by award-winning sculptor Todd Andrew Babb to celebrate the fair's silver anniversary.
The juried fair, ranked as a top 100 national art event by Sunshine Artist magazine, first set up on the sidewalks in 1987 with just 16 artists, according to event promoter Howard Alan. It returns in January and March.

Kevin Kichar, a Fort Lauderdale mixed-media artist who works primarily in paper, clay and glass, will be showing brightly colored, handmade paper tapestries. Pieces run $100 to $3,000.
Kicharmural.jpg

Kichar's colorful, glazed mosaic tiles adorn the Fourth Avenue Marshall Bridge spanning the New River, right. The 2011 public art project, dedicated in March, was commissioned by the Tarpon River and Sailboat Bend civic associations.

The bridge tiles are featured on one of several $10 commemorative posters benefiting the Las Olas Association.

“Carroll's Jewelers gives me broken pieces of china, glass and jewelry, and I create tile mosaic sculptures out of the shards,” says Kichar, 56. “I'll be exhibiting them at the show this weekend.”

Kichar's tent will be located in front of the jewelry store at 915 E. Las Olas Boulevard.

"Stop by. I'll be happy to sign the posters."

If you go

Stitch Rock, SoFla's largest indie craft fair, comes to Delray Beach on Saturday

396accentyouweb.jpg

Skip the mall.

Score unique, funky handmade fashions and home decor at Stitch Rock, South Florida's largest indie bazaar at Old School Square in Delray Beach on Saturday.

The annual craft fair, from noon to 6 p.m. in the gymnasium, has more than 80 vendors selling one-of-a-kind jewelry, upcycled clothing, housewares, and natural and vegan bath & body goods and more.

"It's like a pop-up Etsy shop," says founder Amanda Linton, 33, of West Palm Beach. "We fill the entire Old School Square gym and have tents outside, too."

Linton, a third generation crafter who also owns Ink & Pistons, a tattoo shop, art gallery and boutique in West Palm Beach, created the bazaar in 2007.
Tortugatileblog.jpg

Since then, she says it's doubled in size.

"I wanted to provide a place where people could buy the best handmade items made right here in South Florida. I like to buy cool, quirky items, and I was shocked that there wasn't any kind of venue that offered a way to purchase that kind of stuff.

"It's evolved into a great community of crafters and supporters who search out handmade goods made locally in their community, instead of spending money on mass produced items made overseas."

Highlights include a 3 p.m. fashion show, raffles and door prizes. Plus, the first 100 to arrive get a swag bag filled with goodies.

"Our crafters in the show donate fun items for the gift gabs, from pins to hairclips to jewelry, magnets, stickers."

Also available for purchase are yummies from gourmet food truck BC Tacos and treats from Sugar Mamma Sweets in Lake Worth.

"Come check out some of the uncommon handmade goods," Linton says. "It's a really fun event. People look forward to all year."

Stitch Rock is at noon-6 p.m. Satruday in the Old School Square Vintage Gymnasium at 51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, 561-635-8086 RocktheStitch.com. or Tickets are $5 and parking is free until 4 p.m.

Score free comics for Free Comic Book Day 2012 on Saturday

avengers.jpg

Yo! Pocket-protecting, comic-book collecting geeks, this one’s for you.
Get free comic books on Saturday to celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2012.

If you visit Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill, you’ll get to pick out five freebies.

“At our store, you’ll get at least five free comic books,” says Joann Minieri, Tate’s manager. “There are more than 43 different titles to choose from this year including “Mouse Guard Labyrinth and Other Stories.” It’s a cool hardcover book. It’s very awesome.”

The timing of the annual May event, which stared in 2002, could not be better this year with Friday’s opening of “The Avengers.”

Minieri says last year’s event drew thousands of customers.

“It’s so fun. There will be a lot customers in costume, from Captain America to Ironman to Star Wars 501st Legion Unit. Those guys come in as Darth Vader and Stormtroopers looking like they just walked off the movie set. Customers love it. They look unreal.”
Score free hot titles from Marvel and others. “There are Avengers, Spiderman, DC Superfriends and Superman comics, too. Just pick what you like off our Free Comic Day menu,” Minieri says.

Docking Bay 94 in Coconut Creek is also participating. "We have hundreds show up. We'll have a bounce house and costumed characters. This is like our St. Patrick's Day," says the manager.

Each comic book is valued at $2.99 to $3.99, Minieri says.

“We’ve ordered more than 24,000 free books. There are plenty to go around.”

Pick your own produce, sunflowers at Bedner's Farm in Boynton Beach

bedner.jpg

Today's going to be gorgeous out so why not spend some time outdoors plucking tomatoes and strawberries right out of the field or cutting yourself a cheerful bouqet of orange and yellow sunflowers at Bedner's Farm in Boynton Beach.

Besides offering U-pick, this 80-acre working farm grows most everything showcased in its newly built, clean and bright Farm Fresh Market. Fruit and veggies come right out of the fields out back and go into your basket and then onto your table. The Bedner's also offer tractor rides, homemade ice cream and hot-off-the-grill BBQ on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays, too.

There were plants, geraniums, herbs and orchids for sale for an amazing four for $20, too.

Bedner Farms is a special place, one of the few family farms in operation in South Florida. Let the kids get acquainted with farm life and kick up their heels playing on the wide lawn while you chow on lunch from Porky & Beth's BBQ that you can enjoy in the new 2,000-square-foot Tiki hut.

I had the pleasure of meeting Charlie, Steve and Bruce Bedner yesterday. Charlie showed me the 10 acres of strawberries and plucked gorgeous vine-ripeded tomatoes right off the plant and cut me a giant sunflower, too. There are two sunny varieties growing in a wide field that's sure to put a smile on your face.

Market hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The fields are closed on Tuesdays. They offer field trips, too.

Bedner Farm is located at 12033 State Road 7 in Boynton Beach. The tomato field is open but the strawberries are ripening and may not be ready. Call 561-733-5490 for U-pick availability.

Airbrushing%20Face.jpg

Attention Vogue covergirls! Get a free Temptu airbrush makeover and photo session at Sephora/Avenutra from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 19.

The fun kicks off with airbrushed models showing the picture-perfect results of airbrush makeup with the easy-to-use Temptu system.
