Training child to use the bathroom

I'm starting to get Baby to tell us when she has to use the bathroom, but am finding that I'm the one who needs training.

I get restless sitting on the bathroom floor while waiting for her to go.

Plus, I don't think at 14 months that she's grasping the concept. Right now we rush her to the bathroom at the times when we know she's due for a delivery.

What has worked for you?

Is it potty-training videos? Patience? Books?

We're lucky to have one of the nation's top potty-training experts living here in South Florida.

Check out The Potty Training Answer Book, by Karen S. Deerwester. She's South Florida Parenting's Toddler-to-Preschool columnist and Mommy and Me director at The Taubman Early Childhood Center at B'nai Torah in Boca Raton.

Her book answers 200 common questions about potty training. I'm sure yours are answered there, too.

Thanks for the great tip!

I'll let you know how it goes.

The best advice I got was that you'll know when they are ready when it's not a fight. I tried several times starting at two years. It wasn't really a fight, he just didn't care. I then tried when he was a little over 2 and a half and he instantly got it and never has had a problem since. He was at an age that he hated when he went on himself and he saw other children at his school going on the potty.
All children are different, but it seems that 14 months is really young to be trying. I can't imagine it being very easy or successful.

I agree with Beth. Patience.
