What did he say? That's so cute

Our 2-year-old Alexander is adding new words each day, and refining his pronunciation of existing words at the same time. So now he says “big” instead of “aBIgh!” and “pizza” instead of “aPEETza.” Similarly, this weekend he started to pronounce the “w” in his younger brother’s name, Rowan. Before, it was “Roro,” or “Rahrah.” So when he said Rowan, or rather “Rowyn,” I should have been nothing but delighted.

And I was proud of him. But something occurred to me: I loved hearing him say “Roro” or “Rahrah.” Our family isn’t into nicknames and we didn’t anticipate Rowan being shortened. Then Alexander coined this catchy name, and I figured it might stick around for a while. Turns out we had it for only a few weeks.

We were with some friends yesterday, and they had a similar story about one of their boys. He would say “froy” for “toy” until his uncle taught him the correct pronunciation. His mother said she loved the way he said toy, and missed hearing it. She knew its disappearance was a good thing, but wished it could have stayed just a bit longer.

So what’s your favorite (mis)pronounced word from your kid?

I don't know if I can say this online, so I'll try to improvise. I always chuckle as my son Evan describes his latest arts and crafts project at preschool. Only he says arts and something that rhymes with "traps." Hey, that "ft" sound at the end of "craft" is tricky.

When my daughter was young she couldn't say dad or daddy, I became daddoo. That stuck through until my son was born 7 years later, and so I am Daddoo to this day.

when my godson was young he could not pronounce his sisters name priscella. He would call her pia and to this day that is her nickname, even among friends.

My brother is Uncle Gabe. My son, who is 2 1/2, called him "Uh Gabe" for a brief period. I loved it because it rhymed with "Duh" and had so many other annoying connotations. However, like the blogger, I know it's a good thing that he can now say "uncle."

Hi Matthew,
It's Ivette. Cute entry! I can totally relate because of my 3-year-old nephew Ethan. He used to mispronounce Chrystian's name and call him "Chin Chin." The family got a laugh out of that, Chrystian did not. But it only lasted a few weeks. Now he can say Chrystian correctly.
We miss Chin Chin :(

Beth called shrimp "thrimp" for a long time, probably because we laughed so much and started calling it that ourselves. Shrimp is still one of her favorite foods.

Hi Matthew! For the longest time my son kept saying or calling "Tee Toe" and I could not figure out what he was saying. I came to learn it was how he pronounced our day care providers daughters name "Rachel"

People always ask me about my name and assume it was a nickname a sibling could not pronounce. Not true. My first name is a nickname for "Katherine" and my mom knew someone who had the name 'Kakie' and gave it to me. :) I like it because people tend not to forget it.

Other mispronounced words include "Fablius" (fabulous) Hicksterical.

Then there was a time about a year ago he caught me off guard and proundly informed me that when he grows up he wants to be a college-er. I was really happy to hear that one!

Great post. Warmest regards to you,

-Kakie
