Can we handle a square milk jug?
A plastic gallon of milk has always been too unwieldly for a little kid to pour. But I'm afraid a newly engineered jug might be even worse.

According to this story from The New York Times, the new shape, being sold at some Wal-Mart and Costco stores, saves the grocer storage space and needs less washing, thus saving water. Fewer truck runs also need to be made because more milk can fit in the cab.
The new shape, apparently the wave of the future, is supposed to save us consumers money: 10 to 20 cents a gallon.
I'm all for saving gas and water. But I'm skeptical those savings will be passed along to us.

Very LITTLE savings are passed on to consumers, actually. If the savings are .10 per unit, the public will be lucky to enjoy .005 of it... the rest will be pocketed.
As for kids pouring the milk jug, many of us over 40 recall pouring milk from a glass container, which was delivered by a milkman. I don't want to hear it. LOL

I'm for anything that reduces consumption by the population in general to try to protect our earth. If this uses less plastic, space in stores, space in trucks (resulting in less gas use to transport) Sure, SOME of us recycle those plastic containers. However plastic can only be recycled so many times. Frankly, I could care less if the savings will be passed onto me. I'm happy about the savings for the environment.
Besides, when are savings EVER passed onto we folks who are the basis of the economy - never. When they're getting a ton of tax money from soaring property values, they can put pavers all over everywhere in every city. But then there's a tax cut, suddenly we're worried about basic services. Same goes for almost every service which now charges a "gas" fee.

Give me a break. Everyone wants to whine about the cost of fuel, trucks on the road, water conservation, rising energy prices...we need to be willing to embrace the small changes being made to help conserve our resorces. I think we can overcome the "difficulty" of pouring milk from a square container and move on to much more important things.
