Should we glorify a single mother of 14?
Like the rest of the country, I am reading every word about Nadya Suleman, the California mother of six who just gave birth to octuplets.

The lurid details continue to fascinate: She is single. The first six were also born by artificial insemination. One of the first six is autistic. Her mother is refusing to help her anymore.
But for me, the key questions are: How could the doctors allow this? Who is paying for the babies' hospital care (taxpayers?)? Who will support these children financially (a book deal)?
At the end of this report is a good quote from a Parkland psychologist, Judith Horowitz, who works on fertility issues: "This woman could not comprehend the ramifications of having eight children of the same age at the same time...After Pampers stops delivering the free diapers, then what?"

When a society allows sperm banks and all sorts of fertility treatments and surrogate birthing, what do you expect? Just because we can do something, it doesn't mean we should. But Americans feel they should have the freedom to do anything with their bodies. On last week's "Private Practice," doctors artificially inseminated an unmarried 50-ish woman, and gave her the eggs of her daughter! Suleman is mentally ill and her behavior is being financed by the taxpayers.

This 33 year old single woman was unemployed, had 6 children under 8 (one of which has autism), was already receiving Welfare and lived with her bankrupt parents. She then intentionally had 8 embryos implanted in her (some say that she went to Mexico to have it done). Who did she think was going to pay for her 14 children???? The taxpayers of course. She shouldn’t be rewarded by anyone (Social Services, the public or Media outlets etc.) for her selfishness and arrogance. There are so many more deserving people in society who get neither donations nor financial assistance even though they're also in need.

We know that there is NO way she can give all those kids the attention they need. Most people have a problem with giving ONE kid all the attention that is needed.
End result? A lifetime of therapy for them, paid for by the rest of us.
Tragic.

This woman is undoubtedly mentally ill - and should not be parenting even one child. Her circumstances should be enough evidence to prove her as an unfit mother and direct the state to remove all children and place in foster homes and/or adoptive situations.
However, this will never happen and liberal lawyers will take up her case proclaiming her rights as a mother, keeping the kids together, state should not interfere in the realm of a "happy" family, her rights to welfare, ad nauseum....
The sad part of this story is that there will be 14 children ready to perpetuate this welfare legacy.
As always, with freedom come responsibility - and that part seems to have been forgotten in American culture.

It is sad for all the children. There are so many families unable to have children and without the funds needed to accomplish having a family. How could a respectable doctor allow this to happen?
Who will physically and financially care for these 14 children, probably the taxpayers. I wish these children no ill will and pray that they make it in this very difficult world.

At what point does society have the right to step in and say no more kids? Is it when the parent can't afford them? Is it a set number, like 10 or 15? There's something about this woman's story that makes me think she's not right in the head, but I don't like the precedent of the government being allowed to tell you how many kids to have.
Still, someone needs to stop that crazy baby making machine before she pops out another 1/2 dozen.

This person is just looking for a free ride by the American taxpayers. She is not American and should be denied any Welfare or any other assistance, paid for by the American people. A lot of people come to this county don't work, don't pay taxes, but want all the benefits that we have and don't use, because we work and pay our own way to provide for our family as Americans. She already has 1 retarded child why have more. She should be made to get her tubes tied, because she is not stable mentally. How can she talk about parenting skills, when it clear she lacks them herself? The only thing she is teaching her kids is how to be a freeloader and it’s ok to have a lot of kids and not be married. She’s not teaching them to be independent law abiding taxpaying citizens. She just LAZY!

It should be illegal for a woman, any woman to use her reproductive organs, for personal benefit. This insane woman is waiting for a book deal, a movie deal. In the meantime, who is going to take care of 14 kids. I have one 15 years old teenager and my hands are full. I can't imagine what is like to have that many. The doctors, sperm bank and others helping her, should be prosecuted . This is crazy

When people like this come around, do like the cat and dog population, it is time to get spayed and neutered. It is fair game to have limits on births, not to see how many "puppies" people can have.

Mentally ill is the word of the day. But this is america, and thats what its become. Now my taxes will be higher because this woman (along with others) believe their vag to be clown car and see how many they can have come out of it.
Its a digusting abuse of the american support system.
You should have to be able to prove you can care for a child and are mentally fit before being permitted any kind of non-natural reproduction. I am a fan of that even for natural production!
SICK SICK SICK!!! with great power(power being freedom) comes great responsibility. So she should be incarcerated for attempting to rip off the american people.

This woman should never have received fertiity treatments. Her mental health is questionable at best, but what is the Doctor who implanted the eight embryos excuse? What Doctor would do that? Who paid for the fertility treatments? This woman is on public assistance and invitro is expensive. The woman is mentaly ill and should be investigated by CFS. Her public assitance should be investigated too. The real "bad guy" here however, is the Doctor. This is medical malpractice that borders on criminal.

My best friend is 34 and a breast cancer survivor! But because of all the radiation and chemo therapy she had to endure for the past year, she is now unable to have children. But yet, it is somehow allowed for some psycho woman to have all of these babies and we have to pay for their care? I wish all the best for all 14 of her children because it's not their fault; let's hope they don't follow in mom's footsteps. Her babies should be given up for adoption so people like my best friend can actually have a chance to be a loving mother like I know she would have been.

I'm so mad. I'm a working (more than 1 job) single mom who has never been on welfare. I can't get anything for free and am a California native that works in a So Cal medical center that is so overspent due to free loading that employees can't even get OT bonuses anymore and were denied Christmas gift cards last year. How dare we let this occur. Just goes to show the stupidity that permeates our society. We are as brainless as dinosaurs and will cause our own demise.

The fact that they were born at Kaiser hospital is very interesting to me. Doesn't it say that, the Mother has private insurance (however H M O they may be). Also The staff at Kaiser Hospital had to be in on it,and they should be ashamed for letting this happen.Perhaps it was a way for them to get some Attention or press from the Medical World.
It is so Hard to bond with one baby, and have that child feel safe and secure in the world by age 3. Who is going to look those babies in the eyes for a long enough time to insure, that kind of security? She will need a pack of live-in nanny's so that they are all comforted properly.
I say send good thoughts to those children because soon enough they will be adults with parental issues....OH NO!

I agree with above comments, but I was wondering if anyone out there actually supports her choice.

Nadya Suleman went on workers compensation disability back in 1999 (at age 23) due to a work-related back injury and collected $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008. She told a workers’ compensation Judge in 2001 that she spent most of the day in bed and had been unable to care for her first child. For the past 10 years though she’s been receiving disability payments and is unable to work (or even get out of bed), she’s been able to endure several IVF treatments and have 14 children.
This woman has been living off the system for most of her adult life and will continue to do so at taxpayer’s expense.

I think we should send Nadya Suleman and her whole family to the white house and let President Obama take care of her on his income while he is in office. Then maybe he could see our country first hand under his nose and maybe issues that need addressing would be noticed more clearly! As well as homeless people they should also be allowed to stay at the white house until their issues are noticed and vets who lay on the streets after serving our country. The white house should be a safe haven for our fallen americans! And instead of us using our taxes to pay for illegal alliens we should take that money and make our border fences higher!

I dont know what is really going on here. The only people that do is the family. I heard that the grandfather was going to go and make the money in his home land. I just hope and pray that god takes care of those babies.

I will pray for those kids. I am sure most of us would like to give our kids everything they would ever need including sending them off to college. I hope she gets her life in order, and her kids can have a chance at a bright future. Something positive needs to come out of this. If you are not physically able to work, and are living off the system, you should not have kids! And a lot of people have to work 80+ hours a week just to have a little more of the better things, and barely get by. We get no help. I hope a lot of people will reflect on this.

This woman chose to give life to 14 beautiful children. I believe that Nadya Suleman deserves help from the government because it (the government) is to blame for most everyone's financial crisis. If not, life will be hell for the children. We need to stop being so judgmental toward others actions. Her children, among others, are the future. Do you want these children to grow up in hatred of our country's government? What good is that going to achieve? America, we are united and we need to act on it.

Just reading the comments its very apparent the this mother has a mental issue. If she is too disabled to get out of bed for one child.I am afraid for those newborns when they are going to come home to all that chaos.I believe those children would have a better chance through adoption rather than Nadya, she very selfish yet she still takes time to have her nails done.STUPPID
