Mom on the Go: Mani-pedis for 4-year-olds? Why not!

Mani-pedis for 4-year-olds?

Um, I don't think so!

spa-kids.jpgOr so was my initial reaction to the Miami Herald story about kiddie salon Le Petite Youth Spa.

But the girly-girly mamas, clearly with a credit line that is stronger than mine, have swayed me. It's just for fun. It helps the girls with self-image, they say.

I mean how can you argue with Mom's perspective: "At school, they do what they see. But here she learns how to be different, like not running [inside] a place like a little boy.''

Plus, the salon doesn't cut cuticles -- just puts pretty paint on teeny toes and fingers.

The girls are playing dress-up. No harm, right?

Heaven forbid a kid should run around...because she's a girl.
Newsbreak! Not only little boys like to run around, and it's pretty depressing to be teaching little girls to work at being pretty objects before they are even old enough to be self-conscious.

In every story there is always someone to point out the negative....what a shame. I like to go the spa and a have facials, mani/ pedi . My 5yr old likes to do girlie things and she feels so special when I let her get her nails done. This is not done on a regular basis but more as a reward becuause it is something that She loves to do.., There is NO harm in having them have some fun with makeup and nails...They are girls after all. By the way my daughter by choice also plays t-ball and tennis.

I have no problem with little girls playing dress up and wanting to look pretty! That doesn't mean they can't also learn to be strong independent girls and women.

But, regular nail polish is nasty toxic stuff with ingredients that cause cancer and others that mimic hormones (and can cause early puberty) - things I would never want to put on my daughter's body at any age!! The good news, you can buy less toxic and non-toxic nail poishes - great for girls who are still developing. Buy some of these safer products in fun colors and bring your own polish to the salon! Have fun, but keep your daughter safe.
