Can you child-proof a paper shredder?
Paper shredders and little kids, or pets, don’t mix. We’ve all heard the stories: Little fingers mangled, dog and cat tongues torn apart. And more. This site has a sampling. Not fun reading.
So I don't want a shredder. But that creates a dilemma: How to dispose of all those personal documents? Cut credit card offers, or whatever, into tiny pieces and then toss them in the trash? That doesn’t seem terribly efficient. I imagine someone has devised a child-proof paper shredder. But I haven’t come across it.
I’m a bit surprised to see that some Web sites just suggest unplugging the shredder and putting it away. Is it worth the risk of forgetting, even once? Then again, identity theft isn't anything to take lightly.
How have you resolved this?

How about keeping it unplugged and out of sight when not in use?

Scissors take way too long. I say get a sheredder and stick it high up in a closet when you're done with it.

There are a few things I always tell people on paper shredder safety.
1) Always turn off and unplug the shredder when you are not using it,
2) never leave it in auto mode unless you are in the room,
3) keep away from areas that children and pets frequent,
4) shredders are small, stick it in a closet or a cabinet,
5) get a shredder that has a safety feature such as SafeSense, in which it will automatically shut it down if a hand or paw gets near it,
6) never let a child operate it,
7) use common sense,
8) adults be mindful of your clothing, hanging jewelery etc.
For more information on a paper shredder that has SafeSense, click here.

Fellowes also has a shredder safety feature which makes the shredder's blades turn off if it senses a hand or paw is getting near the shredder throat. It is called SafetySense. I recommend it.

your child should not be allowed to operate a shredder, hence features are added as safety measures helping in preventing accidents .

There are shredders out there that auto shut down if it senses a hand, paw, or finger getting dangerously close to the shredder opening. One such manufacturer is Fellowes. Check out their shredders and shredder safety.
