A chocolate field trip for kids

chocolate-thumb.jpg This field trip sounds irresistible. The Schakolad Chocolate Factory in Davie invites kids 6 to 13 to learn all about making chocolate -- from cacao bean to candy bar. They will also get to create their own chocolate treats. Yum!

But act fast -- spots are limited. Schakolad is now taking reservations for Aug. 18 field trips. When the morning one fills up, they may open registration for an afternoon session. The price is $9.50 per child. Call 954-472-6155 to reserve.

And every day through the end of August, they offer one of their specialities for just a dollar. Mondays: 12 ounce latte. Tuesdays: two chocolate dipped pretzels. Wednesday: chocolate dipped strawberry. Thursday: one scoop of ice cream. Friday: chocolate flat rose lollipop.

The Schakolad Chocolate Factory is at 7740 SW Nova Drive in Davie.

How about a "VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP" to lots of interesting places?
Here's another great website for kids: MEET ME AT THE CORNER, Virtual FIeld Trips for Kids (www.meetmeatthercorner.org)

Geared to children ages 7-12, MeetMeAtTheCorner.org is a dynamic, interactive site, which encourages individual expression and participation through video submissions from children worldwide. Through these video pod casts, the site creates a community of children who learn the art of self-expression and storytelling through video. The site is free of charge.

MeetMeAtTheCorner.org currently offers more than 50 three-to four-minute episodes. Recent additions include interviews with famous artists and writers, trips to New York City, San Diego, and Colorado, and introductions to unusual hobbies. New trips are added every three weeks.

The latest episode features an episode about homing pigeons. There are links to fun websites and a Learning Corner of extended questions and activities.

On a rainy summer day, check it out.

Donna, thanks for the great tip! This looks like a wonderful, creative site for families. Can't wait to explore it more.

For a while, my kids were making videos and posting them on YouTube. This site, however, feels much safer and, well, wholesome.

I bet teachers could put it to creative uses in the classroom, too.

Thanks -- Gretchen
