Texting while driving PSA: your message has been sent
Warning: The video attached to this post could be very disturbing to younger readers/viewers. Parents should review this video before deciding whether it's appropriate to share with their children.
I first wrote about texting while driving back in April, and not surprisingly, the issue has not gone away. For our family, it's taken on a little extra significance because my older stepdaughter now has a bona fide driver's license (and her own car). She no longer needs to wait for us to take her anyplace.
And we trust her (with all the hesitation that most parents feel when their 16-year-olds get behind the wheel of their cars).
Right now, her phone is out of reach while she's driving. We know we can't monitor every second she spends in the car, but I'm glad my wife talked to her about the dangers of distractions behind the wheel. I hope she listens. I know it's had an effect on me.
Speaking of which, I was disturbed yesterday to see this video being played on CNN. I thought it was a bit much. But now I'm not so sure. Maybe we should see this kind of thing more often.
By the way, it's a British public service announcement, which explains why the driver is sitting on the "wrong" side of the car.
What do you think; is this an effective way to get the message across, or is it bound to backfire as a scare tactic?

It's a mistake to think that only teens make this life or death decision. There are a whole bunch of adults that text while driving - that should also view this video. This is one of the very few times I would preach intolerance: kids should refuse to ride with/fuss at adults who text while driving - and adults cannot possibly over communicate the dangers of driving and texting to teens.

Should be required viewing from K thru 12. Period.

Sadly it will only become a law when a family member of a politician (a la Irv Slosberg) gets killed or seriously injured. What a video....Damn

I agree, Cindy. Adults need to knock it off, too. I've done it, but something about having a baby strapped into a car seat behind me has made me really curtail this. It's been a while since I've done it; not long enough to say I've stopped. I think we all need to recognize that this is as much of a threat as getting behind the wheel after a night of drinking.

Graphic video? Stupid parents let their 10-year-olds see R-rated movies with stuff that's much worse than this.
Posted by: Billy | August 25, 2009 2:30 PM
Oh yeah, and kids (that means up to 18) don't need and shouldn't have cell phones in the first place. More bad parenting.

Disturbing? Of course it is. It's supposed to send a clear message. Make all drivers watch it? Sure, why not? But most will blow it off with an ignorant "It's fake" attitude. But if just a few viewers are so alarmed by it that they decide to never text while driving, then it has served its purpose and maybe saved a few innocent lives.

Wow, those were almost as funny as the ones I had to watch in high school in the late 70's.. some will remember the driver's ed 'scare movies'.
All the adults thought it was soooo serious, and all the kids laughed and kept right on doing what we were doing.
If you don't want your kids texting and driving, either turn off texting on their phone account or don't give them a car. A trip to the movies won't change anything at all.

I just want to say, I watched it again. Hilarious.
I especially like the part where the little kid goes 'mommy, daddy, wake up'.. can't wait to hear that remixed into a club beat!!!

No worse than many movies but very effective!!! I remember watching the crash test dummies video -- and have never failed to buckle up since then.

Billy,
I didn't say the video was graphic. I said it could be disturbing to younger readers. But now that you mention it, I wonder if it's more disturbing to PARENTS of younger readers. I find it tougher to watch things like "Law & Order: SVU" now that I have a baby. It just hits me differently. Our kids are more resilient than we give them credit for, no doubt.
But still.

The crunch noise that sounds like the neck breaking at :27 is a very nice touch.
Sadly,I don't think it will stop anyone - teens or adults - from doing stupid things behind the wheel...until maybe someone they know dies because of their negligence.

All ages should see this, this isn't too graphic for anyone because this could really happen.

Its not just texting and its not kids, today speeding along on I-95 I passed a car (it was a couple of lanes over) that was all over the road. I was wondering if the older gentleman was having a health problem and then I saw him put his cell phone to his ear. He was probably all over the road while trying to dial or answer the phone.

This is a serious problem - so what if people don't care if they kill themselves while driving and texting - it's not fair to endanger everyone else that they might kill. I drive less than a mile per day to and from work, but in that short distance - 2.5 blocks - I see some grown-up idiot texting while driving and they are ALWAYS all over the road! This is a much worse problem than most people realize!

Billy,
I owe you an apology. I see where you got "graphic" from. I agree. I don't think it's graphic. But I do think it's disturbing, for what it's worth.

I think this video is extremely effective. Very powerful.

If just one accident is avoided or better yet just one life saved, the video is worth its' weight in gold!

Oh man. I vow to stop texting while driving forever.

It is a PHONE. Not a gd typewriter.
Pick it up and CALL somebody.
If you want to type them a message use a typewriter.
idiots...

MediaCurves.com just conducted a study with 300 viewers of a Public Service Announcement (PSA) from the U.K. illustrating the dangers of texting and driving. Results showed that majority of viewers (80%) reported that they are less likely to text while driving after watching the PSA. The study also found that 85% of American viewers reported that the PSA should be aired in the U.S. The majority of viewers (87%) believe that the PSA is appropriate in nature, and 86% also indicated that the PSA was extremely effective. More in-depth results can be viewed at http://www.mediacurves.com/NationalMediaFocus/J7508-PSA/Index.cfm

Hi, everybody. My name is Donna. I’m a working mother. My husband, Gerry, is a teacher. Lately, it seems that everywhere there is news of horrible things happening to kids. Whether it’s depression, bad social environments, or techno terrorism - the effects are staggering. Children as young as elementary school are taking their own lives and all too often it seems that parents had no idea why until it was too late. I’ve found, with a little research, that a large majority of kids are subject to these things through technology especially cell phones. Not only can they access inappropriate and scary websites at anytime and anywhere but they are being bullied by text messages. Plus, sexual predators are everywhere contacting our kids. Kids are texting in school, while driving, and even doing something called “Sex-ting.” We give our children these devices in the hopes that they are safer because of it but with so much freedom at their fingertips it may actually be putting them in more danger. I wondered if there was a way to have it both ways and then I caught this segment on “Good Morning America” about a software called WEB SAFETY. It seems to be the answer. It stops texting from any specific locations parents choose like school and the car. It sends alerts to parents when any dangerous communication occurs. It even gives parents a continuous location on their child through the phone. I found that the software is backed by prominent people nationwide and will soon to be available nationwide. Also that I could personally help other people become involved in this worthwhile cause and we all could make a nice income just by introducing it to others. I truly believe that this program will make a difference. Everyone can be involved in making this world a safer place for our children.
Email me for further info on how you can join this very urgent and important cause.

As a father of 3, I found the video to say the least, DISTURBING. Have you ever heard the expression "CAN'T CHEW BUBBLE GUM AND WALK AT THE SAME TIME"? Next time you are driving, look around. Count how many people you see on the phone while driving. Is a phone call, talking or texting, more important than your life?
