Should Roman Polanski go to jail for raping a 13-year-old 30 years ago?

If director Roman Polanski were a priest and had raped a 13-year-old, there would be universal condemnation and disdain across America.polanski.jpg

But as Father Tom Reese of Georgetown University points out, no one seems too outraged that Polanski, who won an Academy Award in 2003, fled the United States in 1978 before his sentencing on charges of giving drugs and alcohol to a minor and having unlawful sex. He faced a 50-year sentence and was arrested on Saturday after three decades on the run.

The victim, Samantha Geimer of Hawaii, says she does not want to prosecute, which to me makes it different from the Catholic sexual abuse cases, in which many victims sought justice decades later. Still, I do see the double standard. What do you think?

Polanski should be taken into custody and the legal process should run its course. Time does not erase his crime nor does his sucessfull career.

This would have been so much simpler, if he'd been home with his wife, when the Mansons came to visit.

If OJ had fled the country, there would have been outrage.

If Micheal Jackson had fled the country, there would have been outrage.

If Peter Falk had fled the country, there would have been outrage.

So yes, this case is no different, I am glad he got FINALLY caught, but if the victim does not want to prosecute, as an adult with adult rights, then you gotta let it drop. Charge him for every little bit of the costs for tracking him down, charge him for fleeing prosecution, for didging taxes, and make his life miserable, but don't force this victim to relive a moment that she wants moved into the past.

What did I do?

People make me sick.. 30 years ago he no matter who raped a little girl who was 13 years old. How may of you have a little girl? Would it be ok if I did that because I am a popular figure??? What is this saying about America, if you poor, Black or white no money not popular it will yeald jail time but if your rich and film maker and popular it is ok come over and rape your little girl in your friends bed???? Get real the guy is a pedophile who was to serve his sentence that was imposed.

No double standard for Roman. He gave alcohol and queludes to a minor and then sodomized her. He was 44 at the time. Any parent who says they would not be outraged and want him prosecuted is either lying or should be questioned about their own moral standards. It was nonconsensual and drugging was part of the process, therefore, off to the slammer for the fugitive from justice. It seems he has been able to enjoy life to the fullest all of these years anyway. I think the debt has come due.

The statute of limitations expired long ago. The little girl has forgiven him. It's time to douse our torches and head back home.

Gimme a break. I do have daughter, and she knows better than to be involved in any situation that would lead to "Polanski" scene.

This girl knew what she was doing - as did some of the 13-year-old girls I messed around with when I was 14-15 years old so many years ago (1974 era). Some of these girls put older girlfriends in later years to shame in bed. If Polanski's case was some kind of mommy-this-man-did-things-to-me scene, it would be considered rape - but have any of you nee-sayers out there actually seen what some of these 13 years olds look like?? Nature has long determined that they were physiologically ready for sex. Have any of you seen Youtube lately? It seems none of these 13-year-olds (I presume they're about that age) mind getting paid thousands of dollars for posing practically nude and taunting with suggestive activities, etc.

Where were Samantha Geimer's (the "little" 13-year-old) parents while their "little girl" was partying with Roman Polanski?

A 13 year old girl was the "going rate" for marrying in some societies not even a hundred years ago. The U.S. has banned it because older women would never see the "marriage side" of an alter if it were. Some conservative (and probably fat and ugly) legislator started the whole underage sex offender laws many years ago to help alleviate that problem.

Samantha Geimer's life doesn't seem to be ruined for having had the experience (not because of what Polanski did anyway), and Polanski possibly having had to spend 50 GD years for a 30 minute experience (which probably left them BOTH satisfied) would have been enough to make any man I know leave the country. Give him a break - Samanthat Geimer certainly did.

To David: Perhaps you should be locked up in prison for a few hours with some inmates, let them drug and sodomize you, and see how you like it. The fact that some 13 YOs are fast for their age simply shows that adults have abdicated their responsibilities.

The only areas where 13 YO sex is considered normal is in Third World countries and in Ghettos. Just look at the criminal underclass, and you will see plenty of precocious sexual activity. Prolonged childhood and delayed sexuality are hallmarks of scientifically-advanced societies.

I was sexually abused at Geimer's age as well, first in a brutal manner by a peer, and then later I was seduced by a much older man. Until I was 30 years old, I had a regular habit of being sexually attracted to significantly older, usually married men whom I could never have a relationship with. All the while I saw my male same-age peers as my enemies and had no feelings for them. So now I am 32 and I've never had a normal romantic relationship with a man. These kinds of experiences will mess a child up, but sometimes you don't realize the effects until later in life.

To TRincon--Kudos to you for your response above. I lament how some of the people cavalierly throw off the childhood of young ladies and press them to "grow up" so fast. I wrote something above on this yesterday and also commented on this in Tom Jicha's article today. You might want to check it out. Imagine if it were Fr. Polanski who did this, even with a willing young girl who admired him and was feeling attracted to him, and he took her to a party and drugged her and sodomized her. Priests aren't the only people who one can accuse of abusing a position of trust or as an authority figure--directors can too. Case closed

"Nature has long determined that (young girls) were physiologically ready for sex."

Tell that to the 12 year old girl in Yemen who died giving birth.

Its amazing how stupid people really are! She is 13! This country's morals, particularly on the left coast, are at an all time low. Hollywood and all its beautiful people can go live in FRANCE.

Polanski needs to pay restitution to her and all will be forgiven. She could learn to live with it if she had $1,000,000. Bethcha!

I think Polanski should be extradited and face the charges.

BTW - he HAS paid restitution to her (an undisclosed amount) which is why she probably is coming forward saying she doesn't want to prosecute. But for the sake of all the OTHER girls out there in the world, the case should be prosecuted AND he should be prosecuted for charges of fleeing the country while on bond. The law is the law.

I think it is absolutely awful that a little girl was raped etc. and the man who did it ran away and now because everyone likes him and he is married and has a family, he should go free. DUH! If I raped your kid what would you do? I am tired of these famous people throwing their weight around and getting away with murder and rape.
Toss him in jail and let him rot, we forget that escaping is also a crime, are they going to let him get away with that also?
I wouldn't would you?
