When should kids start using deodorant?
Remember when true body odor didn’t hit until you were a teenager? It seem like those days are gone.
The other day my aunt came over and discreetly asked me if I had introduced my daughter to deodorant.
At six? Isn’t that too early? I thought.
But after raising this sensitive topic to some of my friends with young children, I learned that many of them have scoured the Internet looking for some form of child-friendly deodorant for their five and six-years-olds.
Some said they wanted to ask other parents about how they dealt with this prickly issue, but wasn’t sure how to broach the subject.
I know enough to know that there have been reports of health risks linked to using deodorant too early. Some experts say don’t do it, and to instead have your child bathe more often, wear loose fitting clothes and use some form of talc powder.
Some of my "organic only" parents said they have their children using deodorants from the health food stores that tend to have fewer chemicals. But is that harmless?
While no one wants their child to stand out because of their odor, we need to start taking a look at why our young children are developing so fast. Something is not right about having to introduce a first grader to deodorant.
What’s next, deodorant for toddlers?

Well, I been asking myself the same, for about a year, I have a 3 year old girl that smells like a football player after practice, I took her to the pediatrician and was told that it was ok as long as I did not see any signs of hormonal development (i.e.: pubic hair, armpit hair), but I still have her wear the crystal stone deodorant. Because of fear of people at the daycare might notice.

As a fifth grade teacher, I have this very sensitive discussion each year with my class parents. Many of my students smell awful after an afternoon of both recess and P.E. Generally, it's a non-issue by the age of 10/11.

I have a friend whose daughter has been wearing deodorant since age 5. My son turned 7 last week and he has dark hair on his legs. If these types of stories are not indication of what genetically-modified foods, hormones and pesticides are doing to our kids, I just don't know what is. We need to find healthy solutions like safe deodorant for our kids, but we should also be attacking the root cause. It's not normal for a kindergartner to need to wear deodorant.

It's so good to hear from other parents and teachers on this. Jill that's great that you talk to parents about this issue. Toddler mom, i may be in the dark, but don't know of this crystal stone deodorant, please let me know more about it.

1. Typical deodorants are not safe at any age. Contain aluminum and other chemicals.
2. Root cause of this problem is our diets, our mistreatment of our environment. Move to plant-based diet. In addition to the impact on our health and our planet. Meat/Dairy/Eggs are one of the primary sources of hormones and other toxic effects on our bodies. Animals are pumped with antibiotics, hormones etc to survive the horrendous conditions. And before you say it - there is no such thing as safe meat/dairy/egg source. Factory farming accounts for OVER 99% of all meat/dairy etc. Cage-free, organic etc meat/egg/dairy is all about marketing.
3. Our kids (and we) are TOO DAMN FAT. This generation will be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than the previous - not to mention the quality of life - puberty in kindergarten etc... goes well with the cell phone and lattes for kids I guess.

Peter, you make a good point about our diets playing a role with these early puberty symptoms, at times. But i have friends who are vegetarians and are dealing with this very same thing too.

My husband just mentioned to me last night that our 4 year old daughter is starting to smell and wondering if we should start putting deotorant on her. I'm like, she's 4! I figured maybe in a couple of years. But now after reading other parents are having the same issue, I think I may just try this Crystal Deodorant and see how it works out. Thanks!

Toddler Mom thanks for the update on Crystal Deodorant. Penni, i'm with you, i think four is too young for deodorant.

I have the same problem with my 8 year old. I have her clean under her arms with alcohol in the morning and before she goes to bed. So far that has been working. Only a few break through days then we use the crystal deodorant. I read about alcohol in a blog and thought I would give it try.

ALCOHOL. Isn't that a little harsh. No side effects?

Georgia... A common response is "I have a friend and it still happened" Reality is that unfortunately vegetarians still eat dairy and cheese... plant-based (vegan) is the way to go... read The China Study

My daughter is 8 and same thing she is wearing the toms one, everything i saw said that this all natural version with no aluminum was okay

They are just loaded with chemicals. Your natural body is designed to sweat as it is a form of detoxing your body. I would suggest you use more healthy brands or try the natural crystal deodorants.

My son is 8 years old and I began having the problem last year. He started using Suave deodorant he began to get clusters of big water bumps under his arms...after 2 weeks he stopped using the deodorant and the itchy water hard bumps subsided and began to dry up. now he is left with all of these ugly blackheads just below his underarms as a result of this., i am scared to use anything at this point. I just recently heard that squeezing a lemon under the arm helps alot.
