Consumers say NUTRO pet food causing illness

ConsumerAffairs.com, which tracks recalls and takes consumer complaints, has just posted a report that claims NUTRO pet food is causing dogs and cats across the country to have diarrhea, vomiting and other digestive problems.

The Web site, which has been critical of the pet food industry, said it came to the conclusion after examining reports submitted by pet-owning readers. However, others said they were satisfied with the products.
Several veterinarians interviewed said many things can cause GI problems in pets. While food ingredients or formulation could be one, so could changes in diet or other health issues, they said.

NUTRO spokespeople said their products had passed quality assurance standards and meet standards set by the FDA. There have been no recalls. Concerned consumers can contact the company here or by calling 800-833-5330.

Have you had good or bad experiences with NUTRO foods?

I began feeding my labrador NUTRO ULTRA about 2 years ago. Since then, she has not only trimmed down, the amount of feces she produces is much lower than on previous foods (Science Diet especially).

I highly recommend NUTRO ULTRA.

Please watch your pets very carefully if you are feeding Nutro. I, too, fed Nutro Natural Chicken, Rice and Oatmeal dry to my dog for 4 years with no problems until after the first of this year, 2008. She gradually became very sick with bloody, diarrhea, vomiting, and very lethargic. As soon as I stopped feeding Nutro, her symptoms immediately stopped. That was the only change I made. I fed her boiled rice and chicken for a while, then gradually changed her to California Naturals. Thank goodness, she is fine now. It seems pets fed the Lamb and Rice react quicker and more severly. Nutro won't admit there is a problem, but I, for one of many, will not feed Nutro again. The company has not been forthright with their customers, in my opinion.

Do Not feed your animals Nutro food. My dogs ate Nutro for 11 years with out a problem, however this summer everything changed. they started showing signs in July...and I could not figure out what was going on. they were on and off sick. Diarrehea, vomiting ,drinking lots of water, eating grass all the time
i would take them to the vet and we would run tests but their urine was fine blood would be ok until last week when they almost died and I got online and put everything together after reading other peoples stories I know there is something wrong with the food. they were eating nutro mini chunk ckicken. the company is saying there is nothing wrong but only more animals will die before the truth comes out. i am so lucky my pets are alive with me tonight, and it is only because people shared their stories online. Thanks
