Recall: Publix Bird Seed
For those of you who love the wild things: Publix recalled three brands of its bird seed on March 27. Types affected include Wild Bird Seed, Cardinal Bird Seed and Oil of Sunflower Seed.
Publix spokeswoman Kimberly Jaeger said there had been no reports of injury or illness but that the seed had been recalled because it “did not meet quality standards.” The recalled product was pulled and what is on the shelves now is safe, she said. But be aware, in case you are feeding seed purchased earlier in March.
Could find no mention of this either on Publix’s Web site or on the FDA recall list. I was alerted to it by a reader. Anyone else heard about it?

I am from Northern NB, Canada, today we heard that Scott's recalled all their Morning Song from the all stores. Is Publix part of Scot's also?
One man trying to buy bird seed at our local Walmart when told about the recall mentioned that he had two dead birds at his feeder. One was on the ground and was gasping for air. This is another knock agaisnt the helpless!! So did these pesticides come from China?

The Wild Bird Seed we bought from WalMart this week wasn't good this time. Very dirty and dusty, and the birds didn't like it. It seemed to choke in their throats and they would rush for water. Transferring seed from a bag to our seed bin gave off a huge cloud of dust which irritated my eyes and throat. The seed isn't usually like this. I just checked the 4 bags of Wild Bird Seed we bought, and the colors of the label are brighter on the two dusty seed bags. Maybe not all the batches are bad. Anyone else know more about this? Thanks.

I'm from the Eastern part of N.Y. I found two dead birds at my feeders and wondered what happened.I fed them the Morning Song. I feel terrible and wonder if any others flew away and died. How terrible..

I've been researching wild bird seed online and found this link http://www.bornagainbirdwatcher.com/ which says about Scotts having some bad seed, but that the seed from Scott Pet Products is OK. Seems there has been some confusion over the names. It also includes an open letter on the Scotts website that says why they have taken their seed off the shelves. They add that they have discontinued use of the unapproved insect controls. There is a toll-free helpline for questions.

It should be noted that many South Florida municipalities have made the feeding of birds, ducks, and other such undesirable wild creatures illegal, although strangely enough bird food is still sold in the Publix, Winn Dixie, and Wal Mart locations in such cities. If only the citizens would obey the laws of their all-knowing elected officials they would not be killing songbirds with bird feed made use components made in our favorite trading partner and 2008 Olympic games host, China.

We saw that Wal-Mart in Pasadena, Texas was pulling all its birdseed off the shelf. We bought some at Lowe's and found it crawlin with insects. April 5, 2008

Yes....bird seed was recalled because pesticides were used in storage areas where birdseed is kept. Some wild bird seeds such as Scotts Miracle Gro Mountain Song birdseed were recalled due to this.

I'm in Pasadena, CA and have a regular bird sanctuary in my yard. I have been greatly dismayed as I have watched no less than 5 house finches die in front of me. They seek water and when the get it have a seizure and keel over. I'm sure there are many others that I didn't see. I called the local vector center but since it wasn't West Nile it was dismissed. No one mentioned bird seed or a recall. I'm horrified that I poisoned so many beautiful creatures while meaning to treat them well. I know, it's hard to prove the link, but I saw the evidence.
