Another Nutro complaint: Melbourne woman says food made her dog sick.
There continues to be a lot of complaints about Nutro pet foods on the blogs and pet Web sites. This one from a Melbourne woman, which came in through the Orlando Sentinel's Animal Crazy blog, just happened over the weekend. Symptoms are the same as others have reported: diarrhea and vomiting.

My 3-year-old Great Pyrenees, Salty, had to be rushed to the hospital on Saturday night (9/20/08) with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. He has never had stomach issues in his life. He had to stay overnight with an IV and was given all types of medicine. They diagnosed him with HGE, or Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, which is a potentially life-threatening disease. (He came home with a diagnosis of bacterial colitis also.)
I remembered that I had recently switched his food to Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice for sensitive skin due to a rash. When I got home from emergency room I looked up the Consumer Affairs page and it had so many recent entries about very seriously sick dogs with the same issues.
Since Saturday, I have spoken to friends in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and here in Florida with the very same problems.
Last night (9/21) we picked Salty up from the emergency vet and a Rottweiler was being admitted. I overheard his owner talking about his symptoms. Bloody vomiting and bloody diarrhea. I asked the owner what food she had been feeding her dog: Nutro Lamb and Rice Dry food.
Four people at work have had sick dogs -- vomiting, diarrhea issues -- and their dogs are fed Nutro Lamb and Rice dry food. One of the people just called her vet. Her vet's dog is sick and is fed Nutro also. One of the co-workers is feeding her two dogs Nutro Large Breed (not lamb and rice) and she just purchased the bag at the PetSupermarket on Palm Bay Road in Palm Bay.
Please help get the word out. Dogs could die from this and pet owners are thinking they are feeding their dogs a good product. I emailed Nutro on 9/20 and 9/22 and have not even received a response. I did file a complaint with the FDA. I am going to check my American Express bill to see when we purchased this dog food. I am asking my co-workers to do the same. So far the vet bill is about $1,000.

Nutro is made by Mars Petcare, which just had a recall of several of their national brands due to a samonella scare (Nutro was not one of them).
The Food and Drug Administration has not announced any recent recall of Nutro products.

I had fed Nutro natural choice for over 10 years with no issues. In April 2008, my malamute and mal/shep mix, who had never had any health issues, both became critically ill within the same weekend. They had fevers of 105, and their liver/pancreatic levels were off the charts. The vets at the emergency clinic were stumped, only said the symptoms were consistant with poisoning. (They had absolutely no access to any poisons). My vet bills were over $2000. My 12-yr old girl died 2 days later, My 9-yr old recovered when I began cooking his own food, but has a permanant head-tilt from the neurological damage he suffered.
If you go to consumer affairs.com, there are dozens of similar stories, most taking place between March and July of this year. Nutro is denying any involvement whatsoever. Every time new evidence is released, (including recent proof of zinc/copper toxicity) they refute the evidence and issue a statement stating how safe their food is. I've talked to their customer service reps on multiple occasions. They read canned statements and lie to me about looking into my case. They want all the information I have sent to their legal department, and offer no other recourse.
Earlier in the year you could not find Nutro lamb and rice on the shelves. Nutro stated it was a 'supplier issue'. That is a lie. This was the same time as the poisonings.
More and more information will hopefully continue to come out. I believe this case will be as big as the 2007 case. Please don't feed your dog Nutro! Even if it's not every bag, it's just not worth the risk!

Back in May, both of my cats (whom I fed Nutro to), became violently ill almost overnight with the cause unknown. My one cat threw up about 15 times in 24 hours, and my other had bloody vomit and diarhhea. They both had to go to the vet after hours, be hydrated and have a bunch of inconclusive tests.... $2000 later I switched their food and my babies were fine. I blame Nutro but good luck getting anything from them. I am just glad they are ok now.

We have had major issues with our dog vomiting for the past year. We were very concerned as it was daily for the past 6 mo. We swithced her off Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice, and she has not been sick since. Does anyone know if there is permanent damage?

I started my dog on Nutro Natural Choice Lite dog food in April of 2008 when she was first diagnosed with Diabetes, because, I was told it was a good food for Diabetic dogs. Her condition worsened after starting her on the food, so more tests were performed. One vet thought she had Cushings, but, the test results were borderline. She continued to worsen, so, she was referred to a vet specialist, who repeated the Cushings tests and found they were no longer borderline, but, she was diagnosed as having Cushings as well as Diabetes. All the while, her condition continued to worsen. She was urinating on the floor, when before starting on the Nutro, she was very well litter box trained (she's a Min-Pin) She continued to drink large amounts of water, began panting constantly, all signs and symptoms consistant with Cushings and Diabetes. Her Diabetes was uncontrollable. Her glucose in her urine would test above 2000 every time, and always about 500 in her blood. Then, recently, she stopped eating. No matter what I'd do, she wouldn't go near her food. Even began refusing treats. One vet thought she might have pancreatitis, but, she didn't. The other vet put her on Pepcid. I began to wonder about her dog food, so, I googled Nutro and found all the negative info on it and was really shocked how her symptoms went right along with most of the other stories being told. I immediately stopped the Nutro and began feeding her a diet of green beans, carrots, baked potatoes and chicken, along with a Pet Tab vitamin, reccommended by my vet. This is day 7 for this new diet. She has not had even one accident on the floor, since stopping the nutro and all the other symptoms have stopped also. Most incredible, is her Diabetes is finally coming under control. Her glucose in her urine has either been below 100 or a few times, even negative!! I stopped in my local pet store where I bought the food to tell the manager about this, and one of the workers said that her dog was having the same symptoms and was on the same food. People really need to know about this, and something needs to be done to get Nutro off the shelves!

I live in Canada and we just switched our Smooth Fox Terrier over to Nutro and within the week he started throwing up 4 and 5 times a day. The vomit was yellow fluid and didn't have any food in it, which seems to be consistent with what I am reading online. I can't guarantee its the Nutro but the similarities are too great. We are switching.
