Evolution of the Kim Family
We didn't know that Lane's character is based on Amy Sherman-Palladino's real-life best friend, Helen Pai. Asia Pacific Arts profiles the evolution of the Kim family and talks about how great it is that Asian-Americans can see themselves represented in a TV family. They've got great quotes from Keiko Agena (Lane) and Emily Kuroda (Mrs. Kim). They also address the mysterious absence of Mr. Kim -- where is that man, anyway?

This reminds me how much we used to love Lane. She was one of our favorite characters.
I didn't even enjoy her wedding last year. I was too worried about Luke and Lorelai.
Now Lane is pregnant and I don't see how I can enjoy her baby either. Are we just supposed to forget about Lorelai while we're watching the other characters? I can't do it! Maybe I should just give up on this show.
Why did you have to destroy such a wonderful show? Who cares if Luke and Lorelai get back together at the very end? We won't get to see them together any more. We'll never know how their story turned out.
I'm glad I read spoilers because my friends who don't, still keep thinking Luke and Lorelai will be back next year. But I think they're going to give up soon too.

I have been watching Gilmore girls from the beginning, it's a great show, you have to keep Luke and Lorlai together. It wouldn't be right.
Why isn't Mr. Kim ever mentioned?
Good luck with this season.

I have grown to think of the Kim family as family. I'm not Asian, but I don't look them as Asian either. Its just friends and fam.

Sometimes I feel that the Kim family is exaggerated a bit, but some of my Asian friends tell me that it is a pretty accurate portrayal of the Asian-American experience (when your parents are first-generation American, that is). I enjoy Keiko's role and think she does a great job. One thing -- can anyone believe that she's over 30 in real life!?
