Killer Zombies and Guilt Overload on Supernatural
OK, even more than clowns, zombies freak us way out. So killer zombie chick just made our skin crawl. What was even worse? The geeky guy making out with killer zombie chick, when he knew damn well she was a zombie, since he was the one who resurrected her. That's necrophilia! Ewww! We were almost glad when she snapped his neck – and we have to admit, we found it perversely amusing that for once, it was some idiot guy dropping his keys while being menaced by a beastie, not a girl. Score one for gender parity.
Did anyone else feel like this episode was sort of muted? We liked the way the director and lighting folks made everything just a little washed out, sort of reinforcing that everyone in the episode was acting through a haze of grief. Nicely done, folks.
All of that leading up to the emotional wallop at the end of the hour. It caught us by surprise to realize that all those times he was saying "What's dead should stay dead," Dean was talking about himself. That's a hell of a lot of guilt to be carrying around, and he's right, there's nothing Sam could say to make it better.
Even with that, they still brought some funny this time out. Our personal favorite? The look on Sam's face when he was watching the adult channel in the room while Dean was out – he looked so confused, like "so that's what Dean does in the back seat of the Metallicar when he goes off with those barmaids…" And then his abrupt clicking off the TV, and trying to look innocent when Dean walked in? "Awkward!" is right!

This episode was amazing...I think that writers are dealing with Dean 's handling with his Dad situation very well...I absolutely do not think that they are over doing it...
Lets see after John's Death...first of all Dean acted in Denail, try not to accept the situation....try to put a brave face in ELAC....then he tried to open up to a stranger...Vulnerable..it did not turn out good..He became angry....so angry and realizing the situation , that his Dad is really gone...
and he need to be brave one , but he can not...Now he has feeling that he has something to do with his Dad'death...guilty and broke down...
Very well written....the way Dean was close to his father....All emotions seems so real...I think it is quite realistic to prolong the way Dean is dealing with his Dad's death...
Sam.....I am just so loving him to be concerned about his brother...So real.
I love this episode...storywise we have seen better, but for the development of charcters how they will be acting in season...Very wisely done....

All I can say is that my heart broke for Dean there at the end...heck it's still breaking. The rest of the episode was great, but the end just got me. Keep it up!

God, what a fantastic episode! Deals with the classic horror motif of creepy-chick-in-a-white-dress - oh, sorry, I mean Zombies/The Living Undead - but manages to inject oodles of humour into it, too, with the weeping flatmate and mentions of Stephen King and George A. Romero flicks (and also *cough* Beaches and Pretty In Pink - Dean, how metrosexual of you!) Not to mention the subplot of Sammy (shockingly) watching porn, which coloured Dean's jokes and jibes for the rest of the ep - coloured them blue ("hardcore sex" indeed!) We even got a fan's injoke with Sam "breaking his arm", rather careless of him, and Dean cracking a joke about it. But of course! I also loved the perhaps-more-important subplot of Dean's struggle with his own mortality, and feelings of worthlessness. If only he could see himself as Sammy does! But the undisputable crowning achievement of Dead Things was THAT final scene - elegantly scripted, devastatingly well-acted and beautifully shot, too. I have rewatched it many times, solely for those last, lingering, bittersweet moments. It shouldn't be possible to tear my heart out and YET also make me feel as if it's bursting with love and pride for our two boys - but jA/jP, Raelle, Kripke, and his team, manage it superbly. A masterpiece of cinematic woobie!

This episode truly represents what I've come to expect from Supernatural - great characters, great acting, great writing! I thought that this episode was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of angst, humor and creepiness. It's this type of wonderful commitment from all members of the cast and crew that keeps me watching.

dude sign me up for that petition or whatever to get JA an emmy!

I'm starting a campaign to get Jensen Ackles nominated for an Emmy. This guy just gets better and better. The last scene tore my heart out. Just beautifully played. Kudos for the writers to leave Sam without a response at the end of that scene. Jensen's expression when Sam couldn't respond was a killer. I'm not forgetting Jared in my praise. Part of why Jensen is sooooo good as Dean is that Jared is soooo good as Sam. The zombie love stuff was Eugh! Gross! Loved the comic lines. The action scenes were great too. Had to chuckle at 6'5" Sam running like hell from that small zombie chick.:) Dean's slide into the grave was terrific. All in all a great episode.

This was an amazing ep that showcased JA's talent with an wonderful script. It just keeps getting better and better.

I always thought The X-Files would be my favorite show of all time. But Supernatural may have jsut edged it out of the top spot. And it's all thanks to JA's Dean and the fantastic relationship between the two brothers. The acting and directing on this show has always been top-notch and the writing is getting better and better. What started out as a good little gulity=pleasure horror-show rip-off each week has turned into a complex intriguing family drama within an awesome cheezy horror-movie each week. So good.

I loved this episode, particularly for the brilliance of Jensen as Dean, finally letting Sam see some of the torment that's devouring him. Sam finally found the right trigger to persuade Dean to share, when he expressed the fear of losing Dean. I appreciated his persistence, and his stalwart support. Seeing him totally helpless to make things all right, once he learned what was driving Dean, was as heartbreaking as seeing Dean come clean on a weight of guilt that's still crushing him after he confessed to it. Bravo to Raelle Tucker for the script, Kim Manners for brilliant direction, and to both Jared and Jensen for the most involving hour of television this week.

This show is so friggin' amazing. Last night's episode was stellar. That last scene with Dean, Oh God. I couldn't breath for a full minute while I absorbed that he was talking about himself staying dead rather than hating himself for wanting something as unatural as his Dad to come back.
Jensen is an amazing find for the CW. He was absolutely perfect in that scene.
Really the last four episodes have been beautiful layered look at Dean;s grief and Sam's concern and fear for Dean.
Bravo Supernatural.
Also double-ewwwwww on the necrophila.

This show is amazing. So many layers. Nice to watch something that actually makes you think once in a while. And it never takes it's self to seriously. All the little touches of humor are just perfect. I also love the fact that it's not predictable, this week especially. That ending really came out of left field for me. Speaking of the ending, Ackles was absolutely fantastic. That man needs to be nominated for some kind of award. He IS Dean.

The episode was good. Jensen Ackles in the last 5 minutes was BRILLIANT.
Dean is without a doubt the most layered, fascinating character on televsion at the moment.
Have you ever read the Velveteen Rabbit? Dean is *real.*
Oh, and thanks SO much for getting next weeks director's cut up so fast! SuperSammy is coming next week! Yay!

It was a really good episode. Not my favourite, but still above average for any of the other shows I have seen on TV. The end was a total shocker to me! I was totally not expecting that! When Dean pulled over, I was expecting him to turn around and go back to the grave!
I am really, REALLY excited for next weeks episode! I have enjoyed all the Dean angst... it's been (for lack of a better word) fun, next week it's my Sammy boy's turn!
Posted by: Anneabell | October 20, 2006 4:33 PM
Relax, Chuck. Next week's all about Sammy. As far as CSPWDT goes, can you say "Rip my heart out?" I didn't expect that bit at the last. Dean really thinks he doesn't deserve to live. :( I agree. Daddy's ghost will have to come correct that assumption. It's what loving fathers and mothers do if there's no other choice.
Sam likes porn. Hee hee hee.

This episode was great! The end was definately a tear jerker! There were great lines in the episode, as always. Hermitme, I love the grief counselor line too! I also loved the part where Dean slid into the grave! That was awesome!! I was suprised that I actually caught that Dean was talking about himself when he would say "What's dead should stay dead." Poor Dean! I just wanted to crawl into the tv and give him and Sammy a big hug in that last scene. I am so glad that Dean actually told Sam how he felt and he actually cried! Well, a few tears fell and I think that's all we're gonna get from Dean. Overall great episode! This season just keeps getting beter and better!

I am so tired of the Dean Winchester hour. This is the fourth episode that is all about Dean angst. If this continues, I will be too bored to keep watching.

i thought this was awesome episode and there were some funny lines. oh the porn thing was funny. At the end was heartbreaking and i think jensen totally nailed it. jared was good too.

Another winner!!! This was a great eppy. The beginning with the boys in the cemetary visiting their mom's grave. I cried with Sammy. And poor Dean so didn't want to be there and deal. Good thing he found a case to work on. HAHA
I loved the humor in this eppy. So many times I found myself laughing so hard I missed the next line which when I rewatched was another funny line. The porn lines were absolutely hilarious especially after Dean walked in on Sam watching it and felt the need to bring it up again & again. "Awkward" LOL The necrophelia I found myself cringing and saying outloud "EWWWWWW" LOL
Then we bring ourselves to the end of the eppy and when Dean pulled off the road I thought oh crap he's gonna let it all loose. I was right but I wasn't expecting him to come out and say that he was dead and "What's dead should say dead" kind of speech. Oh my heart was breaking and I was crying right along with Dean! And might I add the acting in this eppy was superb!!!!!! Both Jensen & Jared are amazing at portraying what they are feeling and you can't help but feel right along with them. Great job guys!!! And to everyone on SN and I mean EVERYONE....Keep up the great work!!!!

That last scene....wow. Jensen can do emotional pain that's so raw and believable. Maybe Ellen can make Dean understand that parents sacrificing themselves for children is what they do. As horrible as Dean feels, it would have been worse for John to watch Dean die. It's not an age thing; it's a parent/child thing. The natural way of things, so to speak. Not that I wanted John to die or think anyone over 40 is expendable, God forbid. I'm still crying buckets over that. I just hope that someone can make Dean believe that a parent sacrificing himself for his child is the better of two horribly sad choices. Any parent would agree.

What can I say about last nights episode...only that it was extremely good!!! Man..I was so not expecting the show to end the way it did!! How sad that Dean feels that way!! Jensen played that part to the tee!!!
All of the angst throughout the episode was fantastic!! Both JA and JP did a wonderful job..as did Kim Manners and the writer for the episode Raelle Tucker!!
Funny moments..Sam getting caught watching porn. That was priceless!! And Dean saying, "Neil its your grief councelors. We're here to hug!"
A fantastic episode last night!! Wonderful!!
Peace!!!

Yeah, making out with a dead chick? Eww.
Count me in as one who kept thinking that Dean was referring to his dad when he kept saying what's dead should stay dead. I was not expecting him to be talking about himself in that way at the end. That was a nice....and very sad...surprise. I just didn't catch on there until the end. I knew he'd put it together and we'd hear this at some point but I was not expecting it to be so soon. So, yay for not dragging that out. It's no big secret but it's a nice little bone to keep things moving along until we do find out what the secret was.
Jensen was incredible, as always. Sammy was a little annoying. I mean, these same types of arguments about Dean not dealing well with their dad's death is/was getting very tiresome for me. So I was a bit exasperated at first to hear Sammy harping at Dean yet again and Dean, yet again, brushing it off. I was sooooo glad they had him finally let Sam in on (part of) what's going on with him. Maybe now he'll leave it alone a little and will quit pushing.
Oh, Sammy chillin' with some porn? lol.
Loved Dean coming up with the case and Sammy being the skeptical one. Also loved Sammy giving Dean some props for his plan to get zombiechick to the cemetery. And how cool did Dean look shooting her ass? Sweet Mary mother of Dean, that stance he had with the cool gun over sword hand jive going on was incredibly hot. lol.
Anyway, I thought it was a great episode all in all.

omg..i loved this episode! the end was so sad..it made me wanna cry! but watching that last scene..just made me realize even more what a great actor jensen was..
Posted by: Samantha | October 20, 2006 10:57 AM
Loved the episode. Dean's comment "Its your grief consolers. We're here to hug." How funny was that. But I didn't see the end coming. I thought all the times Dean was saying that he was referring to his father, that maybe Dean had been thinking of bringing him back. But that last scene, it was just heartbreaking. And Jensen played it perfect. This show is awesome.
