Supernatural: DeanAngst, Bloody Beheadings, and More
How much did we love this episode? So, so much. We had the opening montage set to classic Journey, lots of shots of the gleaming, restored metallicar growling down the road to AC/DC; the guys in suits impersonating tabloid reporters; a sheriff who finally explains the whole cattle mutilation once and for all; the guys in lab coats infiltrating the morgue, then sparring over who would have to handle the severed heads; a stop at a seedy bar; an ambush in an alley; Sam being called "Chachi"; a rolling arsenal in another classic car; a chupacabra reference; a bloody beheading – and that's all before the first commercial break. What's not to love?
They had to pack that much action into the first 15 minutes just to make room for all the DeanAngst – the poor guy is seriously adrift. We love how he and Sam have switched roles over the course of the series – in season 1, Sam was the angry young man who distrusted his father and was dubious about the work they did. Dean helped guide him through that. Now it's Sam's turn to be Dean's support system.
We also loves seeing Amber Benson return to a vamp show – only this time representing the vampire side of the equation. She pulled off making a bloodsucking fiend a sympathetic character, which is no mean feat. Bravo, Amber.
Finally, we'll admit to being a little schizophrenic about this episode. We're glad Dean is starting to see that violence isn't always the answer – and Gordon made a hell of a cautionary tale – but we have to admit that the scenes where Dean chopped off the first vamp's head, fought with Gordon, and finally casually ran him into a wall made us
cheer. Violence isn't always the answer – but you have to give it to the boys, the make it look damn good.
What'd you think of last night's episode? Are we just unnaturally obsessed, or does this show keep getting better and better?

Just added: Eric Kripke talks to TV Guide and reveals all sort of hints about what’s coming up for the rest of the season. Yes, we will find out what John’s secret was, the big bad demon will appear again, and we’ll finally figure out what the deal is with Dean’s necklace. We can’t wait!

I have to say that I love the continuity of this show. I love and applaud how traumatic events aren't just shoved into one episode and then swept under the rug. I loved the character development in this episode, especially for Dean - props to Jensen for some fantastic acting (as usual). Can't say that this is the creepiest episode I've seen, but since I prefer character development I can't say that I mind. And of course, yeah, the Metallicar is back!!!

"Only he gets to call me that."
Great episode, awesome car and amazing acting. Amber was really cool, the angst was moving and this whole dilemma with killing supernatural/evil thing...Good job! Can't wait for the next one:) The director's cut of 'Children shouldn't play with dead things' is amazing...God, I love the brothers:)

This was an amazing episode!! I loved Supernatural from the beginning and it is only getting better with each episode!
I loved seeing the role reversal. Jensen and Jared both did great jobs (as they always do) Dean's anger was incredible. I loved being able to get some insight into Dean's real feelings.
I am also very glad that Sam didn't clock Dean. It was very big of him not to do that when Dean had hit him. Go Sammy!!

Just had to say that this is one of my favourite episodes. i love the angst on both brothers side, and I like that Sam is taking a bigger leadership role. Dean needing the help is a nice change!
Best show on TV, the ONLY show I actually tune in week to week to watch. I catch Veronica/Smallville/Battlestar once in a while, but I CANNOT miss Supernatural! Heck I watch it Thursday, Friday and Sunday! (Gotta love cable TV! haha)

This episode was just so excellent. All the characterization was well thought out and well written, the dialogue was very natural, the director pulled out a lot of awesome shots...I'm really psyched about this season!

Supernatural is my one must-see show in the week, and episodes like Bloodlust are precisely why - wonderful acting bringing character development to life, solid writing wrestling with moral and ethical issues, wit and joy (yes, Dean and the Impala DEFINITELY need to get a room - the car porn was wonderful!), and that lovely lens flare across Dean's face at the end - this is excellent television. The role reversal between the brothers from the first season into this one has been intriguing to watch.
I have fallen so in love with this series that I have begun to blog it over on TVGuide.com, and I'm not the only one. There is much love and praise out there, and I hope the CW realizes what a gem it has in Eric Kripke's spectacular creation! From week to week, it grows ...

I have been waiting for a show like this for years, one which fits nicely outside the box. There is no other show like Supernatural out there it is a true rarity amongst the abundance of crap that is filtered onto our television screens every week - the constant need for reality shows and cop and medical dramas makes viewing boring if I want reality I'll watch the news thanks.
I want to THANK you Eric for creating a show that brightens my day. Whenever I am feeling stressed or need to escape I watch Sam and Dean go on an adventure. Also to you and the writers of the show from a psychic’s point of view THANK YOU SO MUCH for portraying Missouri like you did as a normal person not some carnival clairvoyant who has a head scarf, hooped ear rings and crystal ball. I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to see the realness of her and her gifts. I would love for Loretta Devine to come back.
I want to send a HUDGE THANKS to the crew - from grips to camera men, directors to FX, PA's to editors, Set design to DOPs every single one of you who put your hard work and pour your creative spirit into this show a standing ovation for you. You're work is very much appreciated.
And now a SPECIAL THANK YOU to Jensen and Jared you guys are the epitome of 'star quality' despite the fame wagon you are riding you both seem to stay firmly on the ground. Your acting (Jensen I've been a fan of yours since Dark Angel and I knew you'd go far) is of the highest caliber with each episode that goes by you both get better and better playing Sam and Dean with ease. I love your humor I mean ya gotta love sarcasm! It's amazing to see from watching the DVD that you both have so much fun on the show despite the hard work. Keep up the phenomenal work!
SPECIAL MENTION TO Jeffery Dean Morgan. I absolutely love you as John Winchester and I am sad that they killed you off though I understand why. Still I reckon you'll be back. You really brought the show to a whole new level and every episode you were in was even more of a joy to watch.
TO THE CW thanks for taking this show on board and giving it the support it will not disappoint. It is one of the best shows I have ever seen and you should be proud to be the network that shows it.
AND ERIC if you read this I got to ask Can I get an acting gig on the show I'm out in Vancouver in December? Huh What d'ya say! :)
Love
Mandy

I don't really know what to say about Supernatural. I'm too obsessed with it for it to be healthy. But I can't get enough. And this season is shaping up to be one to remember. I thought Bloodlust was fantastic - dark, broody, funny. Plus, it was good to see the Winchester boys get their violence on again.

Kudos to the writers for taking a chance and showing us a couple of guys really grieving over thier Dad. Too many shows gloss over the dark and gritty side of grief, but you all got it just right. Yes it makes for darker TV and yes I miss the good old Dean, but it's good to know that even Sam and Dean have to take some time to indulge their emotions (even if that does mean punching someone).

Hey I love the new season! Dean and Sam are hot! Well Sammy cut ur hair please.
Posted by: Nicole | October 17, 2006 11:55 AM
Well, I just wanted to say that "Bloodlust" was another excellent episode! I loved all of the Dean angsts that is starting to come to the surface!! Man this season is turing out to be an fantastic season!!!
Gordon..I would love to see him return to the show...for a little payback, may be! I think that Dean has made an enemy here with Gordon...
I also liked that Sam is trying to get Dean to open up and admit that he is not doing ok. I think that shows that Sam is concerned for Dean. There is so much going on so far in this season...I am just really excited and thrilled with the way things are turining out so far!!
Kripke and company...bless you all for working your butts off to bring us this wonderful show!!! You have restored my faith in quality tv! SN is the best show on tv at the moment and I just wanted to thank you, JA and JP, the crew, the writers, producers, and the CW network for all of your hard work and dedication to this show!!
Peace!!!

I am appreciating the slippery psychological slope Dean is on. It gives Jensen a chance to shine. I'm liking the change in overall tone of the series. It's more....grownup for want of a better description.

The episode was awesome !
Dean punching Sam and asking him to punch him back at the end.
Jared's acting was incredibly great, the second season is an oportunity for him to show his talent.
I loved the humor in the episode and THE IMPALA IS BACK !! thank you Kripke.

I just wanted to say that I love the season so far. It's very exciting.Bloodlust was an amazing episode although I was very shocked when Dean hit Sam. I love the way their relationship is developing and I am looking forward to see what is going to happen next!!!!In my opinion Supernatural is THE best show on tv!!!!!

Hey! Over at cwtv.com you guys don't have a director's cut
for Supernatural! :::pouts:::
You've got TWO Veronica Mars clips-- its a great show-- but I want some DEAN!!

Supernatural:
Bloodlust was fantastic. The best scene was the return of the 67 Impala. They boys just weren't the same without it. Love how the music just adds to the show-Journey and ACDC just within the first few minutes. Perfect!
Jensen and Jared have just been blowing me away this season. Their portrayal of Dean and Sam grieving is dead on. I enjoy how Mr. Kripke is switching the characters around this season. Dean the more confused hunter, grieving and contemplating those "shades of gray" in good versus evil. Sam, on the other hand, seems to be embracing hunting and looking out for Dean, or trying to.
I'm also enjoying the new characters. It's interesting seeing a whole social circle of hunters developing. Looking forward to more Bobby and hopefully we will see Missouri back in the near future.
Can't wait for Thursday night. This season is awesome!!!

This episode was incredible. Dean's rapidfire mood changes, that flat, dispassionate look he gave Same after he cut off the vampires head, all marvelously conveyed by Jensen Ackles. Jared got to stretch and show something other than the "woe is me" that haunted him last year. I'm hoping we'll see more of Gordon.
All in all, a great episode.

i loved this episode!!! Dean/Jensen is just so damn hot!!!! its just unbelievable sometimes. wow..i was so shocked when dean punched sam though! i just went =O crazy..loved the ending..sweet brotherly moment. love those!

Awesome picture of Dean. That boy is smoking hot.

Another great episode. The Js are really bringing it this season.
I'm surprised SPN doesn't get more posts on this blog, when the pablum that is SV seems to generate hundreds.
Come on people, show the boys some more love.

This show kicks all kinds of ass. Another excellent episode. The second season is off to a great start. Dean was off the charts awesome in a deranged kind of way. And while I love that Sammy's being all concerned about his big brother, he kind of deserved the punch for what he said to Dean about insulting their Dad's memory. But he also deserved Dean's very Deanlike apology and the thank you at the end. Thanks boys.

Great recap. This was a great episode. For the poster who didn't like DeanAngst, tough, we've had SamAngst aplenty, thank you. This episode really rocked it showing how much Dean's tough exterior is cracking. Loved Gordy, and yeah, the violence did cheer. The head bashing on the wall when Dean had Gordy in a headlock was hilarious, and unexpected. Just to finish this with, you are not unnaturally obsessed, this show is getting better and better. Best show the CW has to offer, actually all of tv right now.
Posted by: hermitme | October 14, 2006 3:17 PM
The episode was wonderfully acted. Dean is just so wrecked and trying so hard to hold it together. And I love watching him actually getting to do some butt-kicking as well. Jensen Ackles is doing an amazing job. Jared P's raised his own game this season too.
I did think that in the writing and the plot itself they presented what should be complicated issues simplistically. Alot of questions that should have been asked, just weren't. Simply switching black and white around doesn't make shades of gray. But it was okay all things considered.
Posted by: Emily | October 14, 2006 3:11 PM
I love this show soooo much. Dean Winchester is on of the best TV characters ever. Jensen just rocks this role. And I'm so glad to see Sammy finally, finally understanding appreciating his brother this season. Great stuff all around.
Posted by: fangirl | October 14, 2006 1:55 AM
Not a big fan of the Dean angst, that's all I can say.
Posted by: Sarah | October 13, 2006 7:05 PM
Dean! Oh Dean! What an episode. It just had so many great moments of Dean angst. Great brother interactions. Did you see that look between Sam and Dean after Dean chopped that vampire's head off? That look said a lot about how Sam must be comcerned about how Dean is handling things. Sam looked truly appalled at seeing Dean's bloodlust. Thank goodness Sammy is around to keep Dean on track, because the scariest being in last night's episode was Dean Winchester! Jensen keeps hitting all the right notes and Jared was equally good. This continues to be the best family drama on televison.

Jackie, you rock! I was just looking for a link for that interview too! Thanks for putting it up!
Posted by: Christian | October 13, 2006 5:31 PM
Christian, you beat me to it! I was just about to link to the Kripke interview with TV Guide.
I've added it to the blurb above.. those of you who haven't read it yet should check it out. There's lots of juicy scoop.
Posted by: Jackie | October 13, 2006 5:24 PM
This show surpasses expectations with every episode. And from Kripke's Q&A with TV Guide it's just going to get better with each ep. I wish the CW would take note of this and publicize it accordingly. For instance, how about a link to Kripke's interview up there with the blurb, huh?
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles are coming into their own under Kripke's guidance and it's amazing to watch after seeing them in Gilmore Girls and Smallville respectively. Things can only get better for them from here.
Posted by: Christian | October 13, 2006 5:14 PM
This show just keeps getting better and better. You'd think that after a while this isn't possible because it's already reached its maximum awesomeness...but no, it does get better!
The Dean angst was amazing. Is he not awesome or what? I loved the end when he told Sam he could take a swing at him for free. One of the best parts in the whole show, though, had to be when Dean punched Gordon so hard it knocked his chair over, said something like, "Alright, I'm ready. Let's go," and just walked out. Classic Dean.
I have a bout a billion other favorite moments, but I could go on for hours. All in all, this show is amazing. Here's to many, many more amazing episodes and seasons of Supernatural!
Posted by: kelsey | October 13, 2006 5:12 PM
This show is just...
The best family drama on TV. The best sci-fi show on TV (and yes, I watch Battlestar Galactica). And definitely the best show on the CW.
I don't understand why more people aren't recognizing this. The media need to get over their misconceptions about sci-fi shows and CW shows. And the CW itself needs to realize what a gem they have on their hands. This is the new Buffy, and I'm honestly loving it more than I ever loved any Whedon show.

i loveeee loveee loveee this show its my favorite show everr but last nights episode was not one of my favs it was good but it wasnt like great i dunno i did loveee how the car was all fixed up and shiny and that scene where dean cut off the vamp's head omg with the blood everything he didnt even look like he cared and he cut it off so slowly! lol and when he punched sammy i was in shock poor sammmy lol

Woo Hoo!
This episode was awesome. Dean was quite intense killing that "fang" at the beginning. The blood splattered face....sweet Mary mother of Dean, that was disturbingly hot.
I thought this was a pretty solid episode. A wee bit heavy handed with the black/white stuff but it was a well done episode overall, I think.
Loved Dean at the end offering Sammy a freebie shot. I eagerly await the episode where he decides to collect. Which is probably going to be when he finds the big secret out.
