Reasons to be Thankful: Supernatural

No new episode of Supernatural this week, but don't despair! We've got plenty of things for you to reflect on while you digest your turkey and stuffing. Here are our Supernatural reasons to be thankful:
#1. The Brothers Winchester. Remember how Family Dynamics came out on top in our Big Bad Bracket? That's because of the amazing relationship Sam and Dean have. And it doesn't just come out during the angst-heavy scenes. They really feel like brothers during the quiet moments. Just watch Sam give Dean a playful shove as they walk away at the end of "The Usual Suspects," or see Dean smirk at Sam's disappointment when they realize he's not in the FBI database. The only way their brotherly relationship could be more realistic is if they start screaming "Stop touching me! You're on my side of the seat!" as they're driving down the highway.
#2. Things that go bump in the night. We love the family dynamics, the brotherly interactions, the realistic portrayals of grief and emotional growth. But we have to admit, wheat first drew us to the show, and what keeps us coming back, is the promise of ghosties and ghoulies and all the other horrible, scary stuff that this show throws at us. We're amazed that a show on primetime broadcast television can be so consistently scary. Some of the moments that had us checking under the bed before we turned off the light - H. H. Holmes' ghost stalking Jo in the sewers in No Exit; the demonic faces appearing out of nowhere in "Crossroads Blues;" the knife-thrower's ghastly, unnatural smile in "Everybody Loves a Clown;" the ghost Claire trying to gurgle out a warning through her slit throat in "The Usual Suspects;" and lots more. The creepiness never gets old.
#3. Jensen Ackles. Okay, yeah, he's incredibly hot. We're fine with that. But we sometimes fear that those smoking-hot looks overshadow the fact that he's an incredible actor. Watch his face while the Crossroads Demon taunts him about his tasty pain, or as he's beating the hell out of the Metallicar in "Everybody Loves a Clown." You can see Dean falling apart, and that's all due to Ackles' skill as an actor. We don't know why he's not starring in movies or headlining Broadway dramas. He may be one of the most underappreciated actors out there right now. Plus, he seems like a genuinely humble guy; he recently told the National Ledger that he didn't think he'd get the chance to act in 10-Inch Heroes, his upcoming indie film. We hope he breaks big soon, but until he does, we're happy to have him on our show.
#4. Jared Padalecki. Again, we'll admit, Padalecki is all sorts of fun to look at. Plus, he apparently spent the break before season two building muscle and bathing in the fabled Fountain of Yowza! - hell, it almost looks like he got taller, and we didn't think that was possible. And again, we worry that some viewers may spend more time drooling over the body than looking at his work. Padalecki's portrayal of Sam has deepened and matured over the past season - just like Sam himself. Plus, Padalecki comes across as a real sweetheart when he's standing up for animal rights - check out his anti-fur ad for PETA.
#5. Supernatural fans. One of the perks of the job for us is that we and legitimately spend at least some of our working hours checking out Supernatural-related websites, and boy, are Supernatural fans a creative bunch! From videos on YouTube to Motivational Posters on Television Without Pity, the fan-created material knocks our socks off. With that in mind, we're planning on pointing you to some of the best fan art when there's no episode to sate our Supernatural hunger. First up, though: Sam's drunken letters to Stephen King on BBQ's fiction journal. It seems our Sammy doesn't like all the factual inaccuracies on the horrormeister's literary oeuvre. Start at the bottom and work your way up - they're loads of fun. Oh, just a warning - there are some naughty words sprinkled in a couple of the letters, so don't read them if you think you'll be offended.
Supernatural fans, what are you thankful for?

Thankful that you fixed up the Metallicar, and resisted the urge to trick it out. Thankful that you continue to write great characters, and that the actors knock their scenes out of the park. Thankful that you don't believe everything you read at TWoP, because most fans do believe things are fair and balanced. Thankful that you've found some of the great stuff at LJ.
Our fandom has Winchesters. We win!

I absolutely LOVE Supernatural! I Love the creators, and writers for making the show my favourite on television.I also love Jared P. and Jensen A. for brining their characters to life every week so realistically, with all that brotherly love, their acting skills are amazing and they deserve more credit for their work. Supernatural is the only show my brother, my friends and I can all agree on. My brother's top 3 reasons to watch the show are(LOL): cool guns, awesome music, and an awesome story line! I can totally agree with everything he says, although I will admit being a girl I don't take much notice in the ghost and ghoul busting weapons, but rather the guys holding them. I hope Supernatural will be on for many seasons to come because it's just so AWESOME AND WELL DONE!!Thank you all!!!XOXOX

It's way past Thanksgiving but in the spirit of the holidays, I too an thankful for Supernatural and the incredibly hard-working an talented people that bring us this show every week.
The CW should also be thankful that it has an actor of Jensen's caliber. He's head and shoulders above anyone else on the network right now.

that's complety right !
I'm thankful for Jensen Ackles, cause' he's very hot and beautiful :D
I love him.

I'm thankful for:
Eric Kripke for creating the Brothers Winchester. Aren't we glad the network didn't go with the Scooby Doo version of Supernatural?
All the creative staff. Those folks that write the angst and snarky lines we love so much and direct all those creepy scenes in my favorite episodes.
Thanks for Jared who came along and is such an appealing Sam that Kripke and company saw Jensen Ackles would be a great Dean.
Thank you for Jensen Ackles who brings my favorite character to life each week. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Dean Winchester is the most fascinating character on TV.

I'm thankful for the show, it's great story, snarky oneliners... (Supernatural and House are the only two shows I watch) BUT, I miss Jeffrey Dean Morgan as John...and I will be even MORE thankful when he comes back, cause I'm missin' my John...

I'm basically in love with Supernatural. It's one of the only shows that I make sure I tune in for every week. Both Jensen and Jared are phenominal. But I feel Jared has that extra oomph. If you know what I mean.
Posted by: Shanay | November 27, 2006 2:31 PM
What am I thankful for? Just about everything. I'm thankful for the brilliant casting, the depth of the characters, the creepiness of the show, the absolute intrigue and brilliance of the show.
I'm especially thankful for Jared Padalecki and his incapability to amaze me with his growth as an actor, his wonderful personality, and his obvious devotion to the character Sam.
Posted by: Honey | November 27, 2006 1:37 PM
I have to say, SN is the only show I have to watch each week. Sure both Jensen & Jared are eye candy, but it's the storyline and writing that keeps me interested and tuned in each week. Not to mention the way Jensen & Jared work together as brothers on screen is amazing. Casting these two was dead on. I can't imaging any other acter in these roles. Both actors have made these characters believable.
Also, I want to mention that SN being aired in widescreen this season gives the show that "movie" look. I love it.

I'm very, very thankful for Jared Padalecki and his portrayal of Sammy Winchester...that boy and the tragedy of his life just break my heart. JPad's acting this season has been stunning (not that it wasn't pretty darned good last year). Love Dean too as well and DaddyW who I miss every single week.
The stories, the family dynamics, the emotion, the humour, the amazing chemistry between Jared and Jensen - it's why this show is absolutely unmissable and why I love it so much.

I loveee the show, I am a very devoted fan. i loveee the winchester brothers. Hmm..i wonder where i can meet them...

Supernatural is by far the best show on TV right now. I agree wholeheartedly that Jensen is underappreciated as an actor. I watch in awe as he puts his heart and soul into every scene, every tiny facial expression is completely believable and natural, every movement is perfect in every way. Jared has taken a little longer to work his way into my heart, but that's only because Sam is still in the vanilla ice cream stage. Dean is a rich plethora of assorted chocolate flavours with generous doses of caramelly goodness. So a big thank you goes out to the writers who gave Dean his depth, and to Jensen for playing him with such sensitivity. Sammy is coming along nicely, I can see some nutty fudge topping in his future and I'm looking forward to it! Okay, enough with the ice cream metaphor, just know that I love the show!!!

I agree with others, Supernatural is so different that people have yet to realise how brilliant it is. The show has everything to make me want to watch every week. Well done for the comments.
I agree that Jensen Ackles is under appreciated as an actor. He stole Dark Angel from the both leads with his ability to turn a scene with just one look. He might be hot but it's his acting which steals scenes, one change of facial expression says so much. In an industry where so many actors seem devoid of facial expressions he is a real find, I guess many other better known actors would be scared to work with him (he would definitely steal most scenes).
I hadn't seen Jared Padalecki before he was on Supernatural, but I am glad that he is co-star because they work so well together.
Excellent show, pity some people prefer mediocre to excellent acting.

The SPN fandom is such a great group of people, and so rewarding to interact with. I've made some awesome friends in my time there, fanficcing on livejournal.
I'm very thankful for the show and all the effort that goes into producing it! And thankful both Ackles and Padalecki bring so much to the screen.
Here's hoping for many years to come!

Supernatural is the best and most unique show on TV.
Yes, it is definitely under-rated.
It is better and all ugly's and reality's crap going on out there!
I love Supernatural.
I am thankful for making this interesting show and I am thankful for Jensen and Jared and the wonderful characters of Dean and Sam!

I am thankful for everything about Supernatural, from its simple existence to the quality inherent in every aspect of its creation and production. I'm thankful for everyone who recognizes the wonderfulness of this show and seeks to spread the love. And I am particularly thankful for each individual aspect you named, plus the music - both the classic rock and the brilliant underscores by Chris Lennertz and Jay Gruska - and Metallicar.

I’m thankful for the show and even more so that it got a second season (and I’m thankful that there will, of course, be many more).
And you got it all right. I couldn’t agree more with what has already been written.
The relationship between the brothers and how you see it in every small thing they do… The family part of the show is, in general, fantastic. Plus, the character depth and growth which is seen on this show make me truly care. The characters are so realistically portrayed. Dean Winchester is quite possibly one of my favourite characters ever and in this season he’s made my heart physically hurt with the angst and the layers… a lot of the credit goes to Jensen Ackles for this too, and not just to the writing.
The acting is amazing from all Winchester (the guest stars’ acting has been doubtful, but I’ll live). Jensen Ackles is doing a wonderful job (as always) and he always makes me feel the character. He’s got rare talent. Yes, Jared Padalecki has grown and in more ways than one. Besides now looking possibly huge compared to Jensen, his acting has become so much stronger. When season 2 first started this was one of the most commented things. The question of what had happened over the summer to suddenly make Jared this good – no offence. Good acting, especially in TV shows, is definitely something to thankful for.
I’m thankful for the way the show is still exciting and how it has dealt with the aftermath of everything… it’s the first show that I haven’t been disappointed in and that have kept the same quality all the way through. I would even go so far to say that’s it getting better. The main story arc is interesting, the stand-alones are funny and scary and the dialog is humorous and well-written with all its pop-culture references an whatnot.
The music rocks (literally), the weapons are all sorts of cool and the sweet 67 chevy impala isn’t just Dean’s baby but mine too. The way it purrs makes me go crazy with car love.
I’m thankful for all of that and for the fandom it has created. The creativity and the sheer joy that have come out of this show are so great to experience.
I’m thankful for Kripke and Co., Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and everyone else who made this show possible.

everyone pretty much covered how amazing supernatural is and how thankful we as fans are for it. so instead, i'd like to thank bbq's fic journal for his/her/their amazing work there, especially the sam drunken letters.
"hey steve, sorry my bro is such a douchebag. --Dean"
HAHAHAHA!!! I was laughing about that for a full five minutes at least. That is such a Dean line! Great job with that!
Oh, and thanks to this blog for its amazingness and linking to those letters. keep up the great work!

Very Thankful for it all! I honestly don't believe that Jensen hasn't 'broken big' with his career. Look him up on the imdb. If that's not a blessed career so far....I don't know what is. He's a great actor and has a long road left in his career. (P.S. when ever you don't think someones acting career is 'big' yet, compare them to how many shows you (the reader of this) has starred in...
Just sayin'
Also agree with the comment- would love to see him in a stage production. Any suggestions of the role?

Thank you for this show Kripke...thank you!!!

What ISN'T to be thankful for when it comes to this show? We've got a brilliant creator, brilliant writers, brilliant directors and cinematography, brilliant actors, a Metallicar that makes everyone jealous (Rock on, Impala Winchester!) and music that I never thought I could get into as much as this show has gotten me into it! This show can make me laugh, cry, and scream within the same hour, and inspire me to no end. For all that and far more that I can't articulate, I am RIDICULOUSLY thankful for this show and will continue to tell everyone about it and bring in more converts to this incredible show! Hail The Krip and keep up the incredible work, Jensen, Jared, and everyone else working on the show! All your hard work is way beyond appreciated!
Posted by: Rose | November 23, 2006 10:25 PM
I am thankful for you posting this! I am thankful that you mentioned TWoP! And everything else, Family Dynamics, Jensen, Jared, oh but you forgot the Metallicar and Mullet Rock! That's okay though, I think everyone knows how great the Impala and the music is.

I'm also thankful for Kripke for making this awesome show!!

There is so many reasons to watch the show and be thankful for.
It's wayy too hard to name them all, but I have one .
I 'm thankful for Eric Kripke. if it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have Supernatural, and that would be a tragety.
I'm also thankful for the underbelly to the show. There's the softer side, the deep story .. emotional side . It's so great.
And all the jokes : )
It's Love !

So many good comments in here, well i totally agree with everyone basically. Jensen is an amazing actor and so is jared. they've both grown and supernatural is getting better and better by the week. Thank You so much for supernatural the best show ever.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 23, 2006 10:14 AM
I agree with everything on your list except for one minor point. I think JPad was far cuter last season when he wasn't quite so huge. But his acting has gotten much better this season and he seems more comfortable in Sam's skin now.
Just for the record, I don't find the strapping Tom Welling that attractive either. Guess I'm just not into such massive guys.
Posted by: Anonymous | November 23, 2006 10:02 AM
Jensen and Jared are two of the most amazing actors ever! Its sad that they arn't more famous, because they deserve to be! But at the same time, all us Supernatural fans get them all to ourselvs!
Things to be thankful for: Eric Kripke and Co. We love you. You all work to so hard give us our wonderful show!
Jared and Jensen. We couldn't have the show without them!
The Impala: Ah, the fourth Winchester! (Now third. Poor dear old John...)Gotta love 'er!
The plot: Come ON! How can you not be thankful for the plot!? Its twists and turns keep us coming back for more! (with the help of Jared and Jensen, of course)
Posted by: Natty | November 23, 2006 12:36 AM
Yep, I am definately greatful for Supernatural because of those things. This show is one of the best written, best acted shows I have ever seen. The Winchester brothers are such rich, complex characters and Jared and Jensen play both so perfectly. I'm also thankful for the Impala (the third main character on the show :D)and for the wonderful music that SN has introduced me to (I never thought that I would be a rock music fan!).
Posted by: A. Hui | November 23, 2006 12:13 AM
Yes. YES. Thanks be to for Supernatural! You pretty much nailed everything, especially the oft-overlooked fandom aspect. Every time someone tells me television is mindless, I direct them to the amount of creativity and discussion that has been inspired by shows like this. The fiction, the art, the videos, the essays and analysis; it's virtually academic. THANK YOU!!!
Posted by: ML | November 22, 2006 11:57 PM
Great list of reasons to be thankful for Supernatural and I totally agree with all of them. Especially #3. I'm sure Jensen will go on to a have amazing success in film and/or television, but I'm thankful for now that he was born to play Dean Winchester.
Posted by: JustMe | November 22, 2006 8:02 PM
This is nice. It seems that these blog post for SN have come along a great way since the first one.
What am I thankful for let me list:
you actually seeing our fan work and enjoying it.
The great storylines that have come from the show. Rarely do I find a show that both my younger brother and I like. Very few shows have the two of us debating about what happened.
The fact that the show is filmed almost all in Vancouver B.C. Canada. From what I remember, it's absolutely beautiful there.
That Jo has been removed and not constantely shoved done my throat except for the episode No Exit. TPTB listen to us.
The great music. I mean every show has a sound and this show has introduced me to some really great rock bands. The same music is rehased in almost all shows that are on. this provides something different.
And atlast, the fact that it was picked up for a second season and is surviving in its timeslot. I mean people could be watching CSI or GA. What more could you ask for.
Posted by: Rebecca | November 22, 2006 6:49 PM
I am absolutely thankful for everything on that list!
...and not to forget I'm thankful for John Winchester too. I miss him!

I'm thankful for Jared and the way he plays Sam.
He's hot, but also an amazing actor and a beautiful person.
I'm thankful for the great stories of this show and the wonderful relationship between the brothers.

I'm thankful for Supernatural in general, for all the reasons stated above. I'm thankful for the brothers, Sam and Dean, and the actors who portray them and, I'm super thankful for the Metallicar, of course.

I'm thankful for:
Dean Winchester, Jensen Ackles, the Impala, Jensen Ackles, Sam Winchester, Eric Kripke, Jared Padelecki and did I mention Jensen Ackles?
Posted by: fangirl | November 22, 2006 5:08 PM
Jensen is an amazing actor. I've known about him since his days on Days of Our Lives, so I guess you could say I am proud of him (a proud fan!). He has succeeded past the soap opera's when people KNOW most soap opera actors/actresses never get anything else but their soaps, but Jensen has proved that wrong. I honestly never thought I'd see him again after he left Days. To be honest, I didn't. I had no idea he was on Dark Angel, Dawson's Creek. I knew he was on Smallville, but I never bothered to watch it 'cause I don't like that show. Now, he has his own TV show and I think it's awesome!
Posted by: Laura | November 22, 2006 5:03 PM
I'm thankful that Supernatural deals with the lives of working-class Middle America, instead of the So-Cal life usually seen on TV. It's nice when the boys "go" somewhere I've been to, and talk about things I've heard before. I like being able to identify with that aspect of the show. =)
Posted by: Maddie | November 22, 2006 4:47 PM
Great reasons to be thankful for Supernatural! many people don't see pass the whole aspect of the show without saying that the guys are hot! dont get me wrong they are but they are very talented and that is what brings me and others to the show every week even if it is re-runs!!
Jared and Jensen are great actors who dont get much recognition in the entertainment industry their brotherly moments off and on screen really pay off for the show and keeps me anxiously waiting for next weeks episode (and also waiting for the great lines to make fanart out of!)
thanks for pointing out all the good aspects of the show! always happy to read these type of blogs!
Posted by: SNnat17 | November 22, 2006 4:15 PM
I'm thankful for the above reasons as well, and also for the emotions I go through during Supernatural. Most of the things they say (especially Dean!) are so quotable. I never fail to laugh while watching any given episode, and then sometimes I get teary-eyed as well. Great job, guys!! Supernatural is definitely my favorite show on television right now, and easily in my top 5 ever, and I'm thankful for it!
Posted by: Mackenzie | November 22, 2006 4:11 PM
Love the thankfulness! I too am thankful for Supernatural for all those reasons and one more... it is something my husband will actually watch WITH me! It crosses all lines, old young, in the middle, me and women! What a great show.
And Jared sure isn't hard to look at! haha He's such a doll! (Jensen too!!!!)
Posted by: Anneabell | November 22, 2006 4:06 PM
What can I say? You got it right. You got it all right, from Jensen's talent to Jared's phenomenal improvement and good looks. Supernatural is getting better and better.
Posted by: Galveston | November 22, 2006 4:05 PM
Great comments and so true. I love the way you touched on all the positive points of SN. The storylines and great writing, the skill of Jensen Ackles, seriously where are the PTBs looking at because they sure a missing some good talent right there. The lovable Jared, and the wonderful way we've seen Sam grow through him, and finally the fans who see us through the repeats and hiatuses with great fanfic and fanart. Love the Sam's Drunken Letters to Stephen King and I'm wondering if the master of all weird has read them. All in all, great sum-up of reasons to love Supernatural.
