Supernatural: A Bit Unresolved?

We’re a bit torn on this episode. Some of the components were great – amazing acting, gorgeous shots, a nice impalement scene – but the episode as a whole seemed a bit unresolved to us. Unfinished. We almost feel like we’ll have to revisit this episode later in the season, when we have more of an idea of what’s really going on. Right now, it almost feels like there is no there there, you know?

But let’s start with the things we loved. Jared Padalecki completely nailed this episode. We’ve talked about how gorgeous he is (and hello, the boy can work those white scrubs) and how funny he can be (the beginning of the drunk scene in Playthings), but we don’t tend to mention his acting all that often. Most of the time, we have to confess that we think Jensen is the stronger actor. But this episode showed how great Jared can be – we could see Sam’s heart breaking when he realized he wasn’t dealing with an angel. But our favorite moment was when Sam confesses how much he needed to believe there’s something more looking out for him than just his Dean. You could just feel how hurt and raw and vulnerable he was. Bravo, Jared. Fantastic work.

We also loved the guest stars. Everyone in this episode did a stellar job, but we have to call out Father Reynolds especially. Both the actor and the character kicked ass. He seems like a good ally for the boys, and they need all the help they can get. Plus, he’s one of the few guests we’ve liked this season who hasn’t been kidnapped by the demon or killed outright.

The atmosphere and settings were pretty damn impressive as well. The creepy televangelist coming on the TV? The wormwood growing over the grave? The somewhat malign cherub in the church? Spooky. (But were we the only people who thought the cherub looked like Austin Power’s Dr. Evil, with the finger to his mouth? Just us? OK, never mind.) There was also some great snark and funny lines in this episode. We expected nothing less from Sera Gamble, who has written some of our favorite episodes, like Faith and Crossroad Blues. But maybe that’s why we were a bit disappointed with the episode – we expected more. It felt slight, almost anticlimactic.

Part of the problem was, while Sam’s journey made sense to us, Dean’s didn’t sit right. Jensen Ackles had some amazing scenes – when he talked to Sam about Mary, how she told little Dean that angels watched over him, our hearts broke. We can see where something like that would shake anyone’s faith. That’s why Dean’s turnaround in the last scene confused us. Yeah, the bad guy got stabbed through the heart with a pole – that’s dramatic (and gratifyingly icky), sure, but “God’s will”? We don’t feel like it was earned. We didn’t quite buy it. Do you think there are angels in Sam and Dean's world?

What did you think? Were you as blown away by Jared’s acting as we were? Did the episode hold together for you? What sort of an impact do you think this episode will have on the boys? Share it all in the comments. Plus, read a full recap!

i think the episode was ok... but i just didn't get the whole thing with max... who was he?

The best espisode I like is the Tall Tales and the way Dean, and sam were fighting over what stuff they didn't even do.The most thing that was funny is that Dean thinks sam has a soft voice but that was kind of mean but it was funny too. I just wanted to tell Jensen that I enjoy that he's a Christian because I'm a christian. He is so sexy really sexy and I really want to be on the show as Dean and sam's half sister.

they are so hot. i can watch them the whole day [especially jensen] without getting tired
& i love the show
i didn't really get the ending with dean, tho. what was the big deal with that pole killing that man anyway?
but anyway, veryy sexy both of them =]

I really liked how they relayed a good message and dwealt whith a hard issue. It really was sad hearing Dean talking about how he does not believe in a good higher power. I can't imagine fighting so muc h evil everyday and feeling so alone in fighting the good fight. What a empty way to live. I CAN"T WAIT FOR NEXT EPPISODE!! I think Jensen and Jared are some of the best actors on TV right now, and I hope they keep diong a great job!

I loved this episode. I do every week. Both Jensen and Jared did a great job.

I think it’s awesome how they do an episode like this, because its so risky-you don't want to insult anyone, and I don't think they did at all.

I think that the ending was great---not like some people think.

I hope that this show stays on for a long time! It’s AWSOME!

All-in-All great episode…AGAIN.

Next week looks amazing.

It's a strange coincidence that Dean was chosed by the "faith" healer to live, then John made a deal with a Demon to switch life & death places Dean. Also, while John was possessed, he fought to regain controll off his body so the Demon wouldn't kill Dean.(He's the only one we've seen do this.) Dean has had some very close calls to Death. Is it possible this went through Dean's mind when the car accident happened?

Something else stuck out at me in this episode.

Pretty much in all the other episodes there were classifications of what was good and what was evil. But because this episode was based on beliefs, Father Gregory, Glorida & Zach couldn't be classisfied as good or evil, right or wrong.

HOTH was neither black or white, it was a shade of gray. Dean has been a believer of you're either good or you're evil. no inbetween. His first questioned this belief in "bloodlust".
So, I guess what I'm saying is that there are shades of gray inbetween good and evil.

The remaining question, will Sam become a shade of gray?

I think this episode was nicely done. The ending didnot bother me at all.

Stellar performances by both Jensen and Jared! These guys need emmys! There were so many heartbeaking moments 2!

And I think the suject was handled very well. Nice writing by Sera Gamble.

So all in all a good episode and CW better give us our third season!

I agree that Jensen is the stronger actor. No doubt about that but Jared did really great in this episode. I agree with whoever said that he does well with the "quieter" scenes than he does with the anger and so on. My heart really went out to him in this one. But, Sam, honey, you need to stop looking to others to save you. You've got to work towards saving (and having faith in) yourself.

I think it was a very well done episode. I don't think there was a problem with the ending either. Dean did not say there was a God, he said... "Maybe...God's will." He was more dumfounded than anything. I hope his questioning fixes up Sam's lost faith. I think Sam needs that bit of faith to keep him going!

Jared and Jensen did such a wonderful job with their acting in this scene. Sam's heartbreak and discovering the angel was not an angel was so well done. It made me nearly start to cry! Way to go boys!

I really enjoyed this episode, I personally believe in God and angles. So I think it was interesting to see how this was played out and I think they did a good job on not making in "preachy" or "Judgmental". Since I’m a Christian and have God & Jesus in my life I enjoy seeing these episodes every so often, but only every so often...so...Great job again

Next week looks absolutely A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!

Jared WAS truly wonderful and he really got a chance to shine! “Houses of the Holy” held together VERY well and I was so excited for this episode and the issues that were tackled. I remember in past interviews that "Faith" was almost the episode that never happened because the studio had its doubts with that kind of storyline. After all, there was no Monster-of-the-Week really, and it touched upon some controversial matters. And yet, Faith quickly became one of the fan favorites. After all, if it’s ok to focus on demons and evil, then why not on the existence of God and forces of good? Just like Faith, HOTH was also written by Sera Gamble, but directed by Kim Manners... two of SN's best!! I, for one, was not disappointed!

And just when we thought they might have run out of family twists, we now get this revelation: Sam prays. Wow... very brave indeed to say that on screen. For Sam to admit to that, it indicates the beautiful influence of Pastor Jim. Sam seemed to have been sheltered from all the evil, therefore Pastor Jim's sermons could have had a longer lasting effect on him. Whereas Dean has seen way much more evil and is therefore more skeptical. Sam's strong faith was clearly established in "Faith," as was Dean's skepticism, and what they have endured has reinforced their original positions. Desperate to believe he isn't evil, Sam is blindly accepting the orders of an avenging "angel," while Dean, having lost almost all belief in God, sees existence as chaos, largely dominated by evil. To have the brothers come to a bit of role reversal in their beliefs was very masterful, and connecting the boys' current beliefs all the way back to their mother was truly moving, especially hearing Dean remember his mother’s last words to him.

Any episode that leaves such an indelible after-image, making the viewers think and question their own beliefs is true quality. Add to that the touches of humor & special effects and I was blown away once more. Every week Supernatural raises the bar of quality, and then it easily meets and exceeds its own bar. Bravo to all!

I have fallen in love with supernatural, i believe it is one of the best shows on tv right now.

I agree that JP completely nailed this episode. He was almost restrained through his scenes - especially his confession to Dean about praying - but his performance was all the more powerful for it.

In regards to Dean, I completely disagree with you. Why is it that you assume Dean's journey is complete by the end of the episode? Why can't his "God's will" comment be a start of a change in his thinking in regards to angels and faith?

This is something that's intricately tied to his mother - and that is something that has never been resolved for Dean in one episode. Their story is a journey - for this episode, we see more of Sam's than Dean's - that doesn't mean that Dean's and his journey to faith is complete by the end.

It could just be starting.

This in turn, is why I think the episode seemed unresolved. Expecting a complete hunt and chase every episode is something that can be limiting to a show. Here we're actually seeing how Sam's "destiny" affects him and Dean - beyond going out and shooting something.

Jared's best episode to date, no doubt about it. I feel it was probably set up for events to come. Very depressing, but well acted.

I agree with your assessment of he episode. It did leave me a bit wanting. You're right in that it had a great look and feel but something was missing for me and part of that was that I didn't think the music driving some of the scenes quite worked. It didn't bring about the correct feeling for me. At least, what I feel the episode was striving for. It was ambitious and thoughtful but these episodes dealing with religion are tricky and this one just fell a bit short for me. I, too, don't think that freak accident at the end was enough to shake Dean's long held stance. I mean, the guy was being pursued, speeding down streets and he got killed in an accident. I see that stuff on the evening news all the time. Is that really so unusual? Sure, the timing of this guy's death could be questioned but, really, it wasn't *so* bizarre a death where someone as cynical about God and angels and all of that would see it as some divine intervention, I don't think.

I agree that Jared was really good in this episode. I am not a big fan of his acting but he does do the more subtle, quiet scenes well (I just don't like his angry/loud Sam. I have a feeling the next episode is going to be hard for me to get through). I really felt for Sam at the end.

Anyway, this wasn't the strongest episode but, as you say, it might be a good one to go and rewatch after the season is done. It might be one that is more appreciated after we see where they were going. Or it could have simply been more or less filler. Time will tell.

However, as with any Supernatural episode, there are always things to love. The magic finger, unicorns and rainbows shooting out of their ass, Dean sharing that story about their mom, Sam's confession at the end, etc.. There are always memorable moments even if the episode as a whole doesn't quite cut it in some way.

It wasn't a "bad" episode. This wasn't a "Bugs" or a "No Exit", but it's really not one I'm going to rewatch repeatedly. It was just kind of mediocre. Unlike last week's, which I'm tempted to whip again this weekend. lol.

I loved everythig about this episode true it didn't have the same feel as others but we got a look inside the brother's lfe that they could have had. This will shake the brothers up in time.

I guess this one left people speechless huh? LOL!

Overall I liked it, but I agree that there was something missing. Not sure what. It was definitely more talky than usual.

But I'm really glad the writers, producers and actors are willing to take risks like this once in a while, even if they don't manage to pull it off completely. It tells me the show is vital and evolving into something much bigger and better than just a little horror movie each week with pretty boys and a kickass car.

I also agree that Jared did a nice job, especially with the Father Gregory scenes and the last scene with Dean where Sam was just so sad and desperate. Jared is really coming into his own this season.

Jensen as usual was awesome. He cracked me up with the vibrating bed scenes and then broke my heart a little with the Mom and Angels talk. He's just so good.

I've seen quite a bit of debate about Dean's so-called turnaround at the end. While I think he was sincere in his belief that he may have seen God's Will, I also think he was more open to the possibility for Sam's sake rather than his own. It was so clear that Sam was crushed by his seeming loss of faith and I think Dean was trying to give him the only thing he could at that moment -- hope. Because you know, he's an awesome big brother.

I agree that we'll have a better sense of how well this episode worked after next week or even at the end of the season. But for now I'm happy enough to just contemplate and overanalyze this calm before the storm.

SO GLAD you cited Padalecki's work this episode. The kid is AMAZING. He's grown so much as an actor. He really blew me away. I felt so *bad* for him. Sam's so frightened now, and who can blame him?

I suspect the content of this episode will make more sense when the whole season has aired.

Jared & his acting... once I got past the scrubs.... I mean.. HELLO. For a Dean girl.... I had a moment where I was questioning my loyality... then I saw Jensen on the bed and it was back to normal.... quarters any one???

Where was I.. Jareds acting... thats right. Jared did an excellent job in walking that fine line of faith. It makes perfect sense and something I hope Kripke uses later on but if there is all this evil... there has to be some sort of good to balance. And while part of me immediately linked the Michael reference to both Sam and mostly Dean, I cant be so sure that we are to believe the hunters in this series are our "Angels" there has to be something more and again, hope that Kripke revisits this again. Did the episode seem unfinished... yes... and I seriously think that was its intent. I hope we get a few more unresolved or incomplete episodes... pieces to the puzzle, thats what these are and this puzzle is rather large.

Dean was in a difficult place this episode, rightfully so but the about face at the end... I got it. Knowing Sammy and Father Reynolds laid the "Angel" to rest the bad guy in the end got his by the oddest"coincidence". Dean didnt have to kick his rear, hell he didnt have to do anything ... now some may argue the chase but then we get into the whole Dean being a tool of God conversation. Knowing what he knew...yah he had to chalk it up to divine intervention... I would have.

I would love though to see Father Reynolds come back...kinda take the place of Pastor Jim in that respect... this war is coming (CW WE BETTER GET THAT THIRD SEASON ERIC HAS PLANNED)the Winchesters are gonna need all the help they can get.

I am always amazed at the intensity of feeling that Jensen conveys with his body language, and I felt it even moreso, this ep.
Jared was really good in this and I agree with your comment. We seem to really be seeing Sam's growth as a character. He is filling out some. I like it. I felt that Dean's response at the end was a little bit too contrived (?).
Dean's "magic fingers" bits were priceless and Sam's reactions were straight man perfect. I loved that little bit with Dean explaining why he doesn't believe in angels. Made me a little teary eyed.
It is a heavy issue to deal with, and I buy the divine justice, but it seemed a little strange hearing it coming from Dean, although in his "world", he has to be looking for an answer, any solution that can help Sam, and nullify his promise to Sam. Maybe a grasping at straws reaction.
Be that as it may, the brothers played their parts to perfection, and were as gorgeous as always. I really wish I could rewatch thatepisode, like now!

I think, Dean labeled it as God's Will because it is pretty physically impossible for a blunt object traveling at that slow speed to penetrate not only glass and a human body, but to go straight through a vehicle's seat as well. I think it was a very classy and subtle take on an issue they had to deal with eventually.

Jared's acting was fantastic but that's nothing new.
I don't get all the talk about Jensen being the better actor, to me both the guys are damned good actors and I always loved Jared's performance since the very first episode.

Also I don't understand why so many people didn't like this episode, it was very good and didn't miss anything.

Maybe it is because it wasn't a Dean centric episode?
I noticed that when an episode focus more on Sam most people have a problem with it.
That's too bad because the greatest thing of Supernatural is the amazing relationship between Sam and Dean and that's what I saw on last night's episode.

Jared did do awesome. I think the unresolved/thing that bothered at the end may have been that Dean changes his opinion way too fast and on too little evidence. There have been freakier accidents than that without any divine intervention. It's a really quick swap for Dean, and the basis of it (the accident) doesn't seem strong enough to support such a reversal. It felt rushed.

Yeah this was an excellent episode. Some comments made by the actors might have upset some people maybe not, but overall I think it was a great episode. Jared did really good acting, so did Jensen. With how these two act, it's like your dragged into their world, I always feel like I'm there with them (OHHH IF ONLY I WAS HAHA)

Anyway, i loveeee Jared and Jensen, they're my favorite actors and i soo hope to meet em one day! Rock on Supernatural.

Hey, jared..jensen..if u read these comments, call my :: wink wink :: ahahah jk.

I lvoe both boys, I really do, but I agree that Jensen is the stronger actor. That aside Jared did one heckuva job in this episode. Some nice, strong acting was done.

I'm not going to say much because, quite frankly, I didn't really care much for this episode. Just want to say that I agree about the episode missing something and more than anything I agree on Dean's last statement being over the top. No it wasn't earned and I didn't feel like that was Dean at all.

I too am undecided. I think this episode served as a breather between last week's fast-paced "Nightshifter" and next week's episode. There were awesome moments, just as every other episode of Supernatural.

I loved Padalecki's acting this week as well. The last scene? Jared did an amazing job. My eyes got misty.

Of course, that isn't to say that I loved Jensen's acting any less. I'm still puddle at his feet. That magic fingers vibrating bed? Awesome. The expression on the Ackles' face? Absolutely priceless. I did not have a single coherent thought for a few minutes and that's all his fault.

It was an ambitious episode that was not afraid to take risks. However, I think I will have to wait until the end of the season to pass my verdict on it. I have a feeling there's some important points in this episode that we haven't realized as of yet.

I really enjoyed this episode, I personally believe in God and angles. So I think it was interesting to see how this was played out and I think they did a good job on not making it "preachy" or "Judgmental". Since I’m a Christian and have God & Jesus in my life I enjoy seeing these episodes every so often, but only every so often...so...Great job again

Next week looks absolutely A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!!!

Same here. I mean, I really didn't expected anything fabulous, but this episode seemed a little off. There were some great moments, jokes, and Jared did an amazing job, but I think it was kinda boring and Dean at the end was too forced. Loved Bob Dylan's 'Knckin' On Heaven's Door' though! Well, next week will kick ass!

I think Dean was just trying to give Sam some hope with what he said at the end. Besides, it's not a huge leap. Dean believed when his mother was alive, lost his faith mostly because of her and now he can give Sammy something.

I bought it.

Okay, I'm kinda torn about this episode. I loved it for the most part, but then there were parts that just annoyed me. But first the good.

Dean playing with a vibrating bed? Hillarious. Dean talking about unicorns? Even better. And the part where Sam said that he prayed every day? Jared nailed it. Well, he pretty much nailed every scene. He was absolutely dead on this episode. Jensen was amazing, too, and I totally agree, Dean talking about why he didn't believe in God completely broke my heart.

The good points in this episode were overshadowed by a couple things that bothered me towards the end of the episode, though.

1) Dean, when you're following someone, you don't drive your car 5 FEET BEHIND THEM! And at night, you might want to turn off your headlights to blend in better. Even I know that (thank you, 24)! Seriously, did he think that the other driver wouldn't notice (although, evidently he didn't, which is another problem I have with this scene) a huge '67 muscle car right on his ass? Dean must have missed that lesson in Stealth and Tracking 101.

2) Also for Dean, YOU DO NOT LEAVE A GIRL WHO WAS JUST ATTACKED IN A DARK ALLEY BY HERSELF AT NIGHT! Yeah, I get that you had to go after the bad guy, but really...would it have been that hard to put her in the back seat or something?

Those were the 2 major problems I had with this episode, and since they were at the end, it kinda diminished the rest of the episode. Still, it was great. I also think I had a minor heart attack when I saw the previews for the next episode. I can't wait for next week!

Oh, and maybe it was just me, but when Dean was chasing that guy and the truck was coming right at them, did anyone else have major S1 finale flashbacks? I was like "NOOOOO!!!! Not again!!" Thank God nothing happened, I don't think I could have handled it a second time lol.

Not one of the best episodes, but conceptually it was an interesting episode. There's the spirit of a priest who was shot in the heart - murdered - on the steps of his church. The spirit cannot move on, feels the need to help those in need of redemption, while carrying vengeance in what he believes is god's will. Father Gregory chose a prostitute and an alcoholic to carry out god's vengeance. Those chosen for vengeance died in the same manner as he did - pierced through the heart. Afterwards, these two people chosen for redemption found enlightenment even though they were locked up for their crimes. So, this leaves us with a morally controversial topic. Is what Father Gregory did right or wrong? Is murder ever justified? Were Gloria and Zach forced to commit murder or did they do it of their own will? After Father Gregory approached Sam, he told Dean that he would save the man and not hurt him. (Dean didn't believe him though and went in his place - we all know the reason for that.) This was Sam's choice in his mind. Are Gloria and Zach truly enlightened and redeemed? Or are they self righteous? People could discuss this for hours.

Moving on, at least Dean & Sam are being smart, keeping Dean out of government buildings and listening to the police radio. They also need to stop using their first names.

Dean, Dean, Dean... this man needs to get laid even more than Sam. He was obsessed with the vibrating bed. No more quarters for you.

I agree, Jared was spectacular in this episode!

The car chase scene made up for the slow pace of the episode. We haven't seen much of the impala this season and this was a great way to incorporate it into an episode. Dean's baby needs action too.

In the beginning of this episode, Dean had no faith to believe in good SN beings; Sam needed to believe - desperate to believe. At the end, Sam was beginning to lose his faith until Dean told him he thought he saw god's will. It was warming to Sam to know his brother saw enough to begin having faith that there is good in the world. I suppose Dean's turnaround could have been that this man in the other car died - pierced throught the heart like the others. Father Gregory said he was carrying out god's will. All those that died in this episode died in the same manner. Also, maybe Dean thought that if the truck approached the intersection a second later, it could have been him who died instead. Was it god's will for the other man to die and Dean to live? Who knows? Touching final scene, supported with Stairway to Heaven playing in the background.

Was this episode written for everyone to feel it was unfinished because everyone has different beliefs? Beliefs are neither right nor wrong, they just are.
