Supernatural: When Sammy's Good, He's Very, Very Good, But When Sammy's Bad, He's Better
Oh, Supernatural – when you’re on, you’re so very on. This episode kicked all sorts of butt, and we can’t find anything to be critical of. Even the return of Jo was well done. Wow!
The writers continue to turn the screws to the Winchester boys. Let’s count up all the forces that are arraigned against them: We’ve got demons and beasties and monsters galore; we’ve got the cops and the Feds and the forces of the law; we’ve got Gordon, an obsessed hunter; and now we’ve got a large portion of the rest of the Hunter community. The pressure keeps mounting, and we love seeing the guys squirm.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – evil Possessed!Winchesters are AWESOME. We never really warmed to Jeffery Dean Morgan as an actor until he got to strut his stuff as Possessed!John. We’ve liked Jared Padalecki as an actor for much longer, but it was just so fun to see him really sink his teeth into being eeeeeeeevil this episode. He was genuinely chilling, and so incredibly compelling to watch. Bravo.
We were on the edge of our seats for the first half, trying to figure out what the hell was going on with Sam. He seemed so quiet and scared at first, like he really was afraid he was going insane and turning evil. That made the revelation that he was possessed, and that the demon was just stringing Dean along, torturing him for the fun of it, that much more delicious.
This all came to a head in the bar scene with Jo. Yeah, yeah, we know, some of you don’t like Jo, but we thought they really used her well here. It was that much more creepy to watch evil Sam menace someone we had met before, so we could see just how much pain he was causing as he pushed her buttons. Which do you think hurt her more – Sam telling her Dean just wasn’t interested in her, or him chanting “My Daddy shot your Daddy in the heeee-eeead!” Plus, how horrifying was it to watch massively huge Sam physically overpower tiny Jo? That seriously spooked us. If Sammy does ever turn evil, there will be no stopping him.
We also loved the way Evil Sam turned on a dime when Dean burst in, going from evil to emo in seconds flat. He really was pushing Dean as much as he could to get Dean to kill him. Sorry, Evil!Sam – it can’t be done.
And we can’t even get over how much we loved the return of Bobby in this episode. We shrieked when we saw Evil!Sam flash his puppy-dog eyes at Bobby and talk his way in the door. We were seriously worried for him, until we found out about the Holy Water-spiked beer. Brilliant! Do you think Bobby has holy water in all of his beer, or did he whip it up special for Sam’s visit? We prefer to think he home-brews his own with holy water, just to be on the safe side.
How cool was it that Sam was possessed by Demon Meg? We loved that, and we can just imagine this pissed-off demon clawing its way out of hell and vowing revenge on Dean. They’ve really pissed her off, and you had to know that was gong to come back and bite them.
Finally, we loved the last scene in the car. Finally, Dean said something that Sam seems to have been forgetting. Yes, John said Dean might have to kill Sam, but he said something else, to – that Dean could save him. And now we know damn well that Dean will do everything in his power to keep Sam safe. No matter how many demons, or monsters, or cops or feds or hunters or even pissed-off demon exes are after them, Dean will save Sam. And oh, how we love watching it.
What did you think? Are you as in love with Evil! Sam as we are? Did you actually almost sort of like Jo in this episode? How many varieties of awesome was Bobby? Share your thoughts in the comments and read a full recap!

M.C.: Although I am not a fan of Jo (or Alona), I somewhat agree with your comments in regards to Sam/Jo. For starters it seems that Alona's acting and onscreen presence is better when she's working with Jared. Agewise, Jo would be more suited for Sam. Personality wise, I still see her as an annoying little sister type who wants to tag along and thinks she's the shit.
Hopefully the door is closed with the Dean/Jo thing.
Since Alona still resembles a high school student, it seemed that Jo was hung up on Dean because she was looking for someone to replace her father.

Jared Padalecki owned this episode so hard nobody could compare.
The acting was absolutely stellar all around but he was THAT perfect that I barely noticed anyone else was in the ep, even Ackles and that dude can act.
Kudos Jared, you were sensational baby. I brought Evil Sam utterly and completely, you deserve an award for this one.

I didn't think that we'd be getting an episode that would kick "Nightshifter" out of my #1 spot so soon, but I'm more than happy we did. Now that I've had time to process this episode, I have to say it was a fantastic hour of TV. It's a real pity that the ratings were so low for this episode but it had everything -- good plotting, excellent characterization, great acting, decent pacing. I really hope that "Supernatural" will eventually get the attention it deserves from viewers, because it is damn good television.
Many elements--action, suspense, humor, fear--were balanced cleverly in this episode. I particularly enjoyed and was surprised by the amount of humor the writers managed to put into "Bad Sign" without making light of the tenseness or direness of the situation.
I was shocked and disgusted by the near-rape scene with Jo and Sam; I was sitting on the edge of my seat during the commercial break waiting for the episode to resume. It was a very effective and terrifying way of illustrating what may happen if Dean doesn't save or kill Sam when the time comes. The consequences will be devastating.
JP really stole the show. He was brilliant in the scene where he broke the beer bottle Jo was holding--he was convincingly menacing and dangerous and I was terrified for poor Jo. I thought Alona Tal did a great job with what she had here. Also, I liked her better in "Bad Sign" than in her previous appearances, which is attributable to the improved writing and direction of her character. JA did a fantastic job; I was physically wincing when Sam dug his thumb into Dean's bullet wound.
I loved how the Cathryn Humphries gave some emotional resolution to Sam and Dean regarding John's secret. It was comforting seeing some of S1 Dean return and Sam looking somewhat reassured for the first time in ages. If the season finale is as good as "Nightshifter" and "Bad Signs," I'll be overjoyed. Given how well Kripke and the writers have been pacing and building the overall storyline this year, the season finale seems to be shaping up to be a good one.
The one thing I didn't like about the episode was the overuse of slo-mo, particularly where possessed Sam is asking Dean to shoot him. It was so melodramatic and cheesy, effectively ruining the seriousness of the scene.
BTW, on the Samgirl v. Deangirl v. whatever-girl battle, I agree jas 100%. Seriously, just because you like one character/actor better doesn't mean that you need to bash another character/actor to make the one you prefer look better. I hate it when someone tries to reduce another's legitimate reasoning to, "Well, you're only saying that because you like so-and-so better or hate so-and-so more." It certainly makes episode discussion a whole lot less effective and enjoyable. It also engenders a lot of unnecessary ill will in the fandom. I doubt people would be as vicious if they were meeting the opposing side face to face instead of on the internet where almost complete anonymity can be retained.
There's my two cents. Happy V-day everyone!

Sarah, I’m sorry I should clarify myself. In my earlier post I never meant to suggest that Bobby wouldn’t make it out alive out of a confrontation with Sam. Instead, what I was trying to say that either Bobby or Dean, both hunters, with vastly different experiences, could have been pushed to their limits while facing this Possessed!Sam. Bobby, actually could have saved the day and tipped the scales in Dean’s favour ending in a scene where the seal on Sam’s arm is broken like the original episode. I never ever meant to say that Bobby had to be sacrificed to prove a point.
Romanticized notion of huting, IMO, isn’t enough of an excuse for Jo. I find her impossibly childish at 20-something, surrounded by the people at the Roadhouse to not have some grasp of the harshness of the life of a hunter. Loners, dedicated to the life on the road and the hunt who drift in and out of the Roadhouse…she doesn’t once think that maybe this life isn’t hard? Her mother is the best example of the consequences of a life with a hunter – a hard, brash woman who is so afraid for her daughter following in her father’s footsteps? I don’t know, losing my father to a horrible event because of his way of life would certainly give me immense food for thought in terms of the “romance” of hunting. Right there, she’s got proof good guys don’t always win. They die horribly with their guts falling out of their bellys. BTW, being the bait in No Exit wasn’t enough of a reality check for her either, I guess.
When it comes down to it, Jo took time away from the Winchesters and Bobby for no good reason that I can see. The power of Sam going darkside would have been far more effective had he faced hunters his equal and shown Bobby and/or Dean that in the end, he might just be too powerful enough for Dean to stop. Then Dean, would have had to make some hard choices of his own. If Kripke is so intent on expanding the show to include other characters, Bobby, IMO should have been on the top of the list.

Damn...can't we all get along and voice our opinions about this show without everyone "yelling" at each other?
So what if someone has a problem with a scene or a character or the comments of others. There's nothing wrong with people expressing their opinoins or venting about aspects of the show they're not happy with. I've had issues with the Jo character since EBLAC. I'm not afraid to admit that and vent about it on this blog.
Some of us our Dean fans...others Sam fans. Both JA & JP are outstanding actors. We all know it.
Stop fighting please. We all appreciate this show and that's what matters.

Quoted by kelly:
"If I read one more time about how Jensen is a better actor than Jared or how the deangirls will never betray Dean I'm gonna kill a mouse!"
I'll join you in killing that mouse if I have to hear one more Samgirl whining about how under-appreciated Jared is and how unfair all the Deangirls are, or how the show just gives better material to Jensen or whatever.
Everyone, abd I mean everyone, has been nothing but complimentary to Jared's acting in this episode. There's absolutely nothing wrong with acknowledging that Jensen also did a good job and that he has always done a good job.
Not sure why you need to turn this into a Deangirl vs. Samgirl issue. People like who they like whether you like it or not.
Seems to me there are two equally "obsessive" groups in this fandom, but it's always the one side that does most of the finger-pointing and name-calling. The Samgirls are always the ones that make it Sam vs. Dean on these boards, but it's the Deangirls that get slapped with the "rabid" label, and almost always by Samfans. That's kinda hypocritical in my opinion and that's what's getting old to me.

Yes, some cellphones will ring even after they've gotten wet. My cellphone rang after I dropped it in the bathtub.
As for "anonymous" who was complaining about how "helpless" Dean was after being shot....are you serious? Just how super human do you expect Dean to be? The man got shot. He barely flinched when Jo dug a bullet out of his shoulder. Have you ever been shot? Good grief. The body reacts negatively to trauma. Dean's a wimp for being a human being? As far as this "maintaining my loyalty to Jensen" from another poster is concerned, it's not a competition. Can we fans please behave like adults? Please? So Jared was a better actor this week. Big deal. It's possible to enjoy both characters without keeping a scorecard.

If I read one more time about how Jensen is a better actor than Jared or how the deangirls will never betray Dean I'm gonna kill a mouse!
Seriously, they're both good actors. Enough already! It's getting old.
In other news, awesome episode!
Jo? No thanks. they needed someone to be tortured by EvilSexySam but now she can go back to Smallville.
Because really, I think she's Lana's twin.
Bobby on the other hand rocks!

"Far more menacing, IMO, would be a Possesed!Sam facing down a hunter like Bobby and winning, waiting for Dean to face him."
But that's just it -- I honestly don't think anyone or anything can get the drop on Bobby. And if DemonSam had killed Bobby, Dean wouldn't have had a chance. It just doesn't work for me.
The "inexperienced" comments didn't mean Jo has never handled a weapon -- it's that her instincts aren't up there yet. She turned her back on Sam, which was the big mistake. She did it so he wouldn't see how freaked she was, but I doubt an experienced hunter would have done that.
As for the romanticized view of hunting -- she's been hearing stories her whole life, seeing hunters after the hunt, but not actually seeing the horror and mess and brutality. Plus, she's been hearing about how wonderful her dad was. She's bound to have a romanticized notion of hunters as these noble warriors for good. Then you get a ridiculously hot, young hunter (and I don't recall seeing anyone so young in the bar) who's fighting the good fight, and she idealizes him. She's young, it happens. Now she was confronted with the reality, and some of her illusions died. The fact that she backed down, that she realized it wasn't about her, that she's not a main character in the Dean and Sam story, was a sign of her growing up.
Also, Dean always seems to be more concerned about female victims being ok -- he kind of seems like he expects men to e able to deal with it, while he's got a chivalrous notion that women should be protected. You saw it when he was telling Sam to get Sherry out of these when he was fighting Shapeshifter Sherry. He would have seen DemonSam attacking a tiny woman as more compelling evidence that Sam had gone Darkside than Sam taking out a big strapping man.
Re: The cell phone ringing while waterlogged -- I'm actually klutzy enough to have tested this theory, and some cell phones do continue working. Thank god. I don't suggest anyone make a habit of this, however.
Re: It being out of character for Dean to be unconscious -- Actually, if anything Dean should have been in worse shape -- that's some really, really cold water in Duluth in February (heck, it's really cold water in August) and hypothermia should have had a much greater effect. I love Dean dearly, and think he's tougher than most, but bullet + fall (and how do you know he didn't hit his head? There were pilings and posts all over the place) + cold water = someone who could use some help. And he couldn't dig the bullet out of his shoulder on his own.
So I stand by my contention that this was a good use of Jo, and I don't think there was a better character they could have used.

JDM's return to SPN is the 2nd question here: http://www.eonline.com/gossip/kristin/blog/index.jsp?uuid=caeea990-dc9f-483e-9d2e-a67050ef4124

Dean is still the hottest and i could never question him he is too good, and i have kept my loyalty to him.

Actually, Sarah, considering Kristin on E is reporting that Jeffery Dean Morgan is going to be returning to Supernatural, I am at a loss why they would waste a show-down with Bobby and a possible insight into John and Bobby and even the Winchesters lives when they were younger...on Jo. Or, even if JDM's appearance has only just been finalized, I'd rather learning more about Bobby and the Winchesters than Jo.
With Possessed!Sam facing Bobby, the next closest thing to a father figure left on the show, we could have found out more about their younger lives, about Bobby in their lives…so much *more* about the brothers, John that we really won’t have much of a chance to do on this show.
Far more menacing, IMO, would be a Possesed!Sam facing down a hunter like Bobby and winning, waiting for Dean to face him. What if Dean isn’t enough to stop his brother in the end? If Bobby isn’t, it would give Dean pause in his capacity to stop Sam – not if he can as his brother, but what if Sam turns and Dean just isn’t enough to stop him? What about the potential in scenes with Dean making this realization? Using the power of this particular demon in Sam against hunters like Dean and Bobby and having them save the day only by the skin of their teeth? Much more effective IMO than random victimization of a character many fans don’t care about. Am I supposed to be cheering Possessed!Sam on when he was attacking Jo? I was and I know other fans were too. Still, others were worried what the effect on Sam would be in the end, not what the effect would be on Jo. We just don’t care.
Here’s another scenario – what about Possessed!Sam getting the drop on Dean and victimizing him? Not punching him out, but them facing each other and the demon using everything he can to psychologically torture Dean? Like Skinwalker, but ten time worse. We saw some hints of it, but what if it had been more? Wouldn’t that have served a greater purpose for the Winchesters as a whole? And Bobby, could come in holy-water spiked beer and all to save the day because a suspicious Dean called him earlier, or he just wants to help Dean find Sam.
As to Jo, I thought she was off hunting getting some spectacular skills. Oh no, wait, wait, here I thought those awesome gun skills and knife-flicking skills were what she came into the show with…but now she’s forgotten about them and is now inexperienced? I expect such character development from SV, it seems to be par for the course over there (Lana-evil; Lana-pure), not this one. It just shows how all over the map this character was and continues to be so. Including her snappish demand to Dean to accompany him on the hunt, because “she’s a part of this now”. What, as bait? And right then, cue Big Brother Dean telling his little sister to shut up and pay attention. Not that she can help Dean get his *brother* back; that by now she knows is possessed, but *she* wants in on the hunt. If Dean talked to anyone with that tone of voice – except maybe Sam – they’d back down too.
Why should she still be idealistic about Dean and the life he leads after working at the Roadhouse, seeing the lives hunters lead there; losing her father to the hunt, learning about his death and John’s role in it at the end of No Exit and taking it out on Dean; along with her lamentable turn on her first “hunt” and running off to live on the road…but still she’s supposed to be idealistic? No, it’s realistic in that she’s still a child and she has no place in the Winchesters world. Not to mention, wasn’t her greatest desire in life to be the hunter and not the woman he leaves behind? Or for that matter, isn’t that why Ellen said she left? Oh Kripke, stop taking lessons from Al & Co. Enough of Jo. She’s got to go.

OK, I just had to say it again: THIS WAS A INCREDIBLE EPISODE!!
AND JO WAS GREAT!! BRING HER BACK!

Lily, I was totally thinking the same foreshadowing thing as you. I was thinking that Dean dying would be the series finale or something (and it would have to end the show because if they killed off Dean, they would kill off half of the cast), but there are a few things that kind of prevent that plot line.
First of all, they probably can't carry that whole "saving Sam" plot line for more than a season without it getting old. They could if they had really really good stories to go with it, but it would be hard to carry it for a very long time. Unless, of course, they plan on ending the show some time in the near future, but that is not an option as far as I am concerned. =)
So then I thought maybe Dean would get seriously hurt but not die in the season finale while trying to save Sam or something like that. But really, how many times can that happen to Dean? Demonic!Sam was right, Dean has had quite a few life/death experiences and come out of them all alive, like a cockroach.
Not to mention the fact that if Dean (or even Sam for that matter) was ever killed off, Kripke would have a whole bunch of fangirls on his ass.
So my point: at first I thought it might be foreshadowing, but as I was thinking about it, it became less and less likely (IMO). I do think, though, that the probability Dean will get a happy ending is slim to none, unfortunately. Plus, knowing Kripke, we're probably going to have this huge, amazing cliffhanger season finale that involves the whole Sam-going-dark-side thing...I just don't think Dean dying will be part of it (but, hey, I've been wrong before, I might be wrong again).

Truly outstanding episode.
I have to admit, Jared was great. He's finally reaching Jensen's level this season. I knew he could do it! Great job, Jared! Compare his acting now to that of the Pilot or even go further back into Gilmore Girls territory and it shows that he has grown immensely. I loved Evil!Sam. I believe that Jared's strength lies in playing someone who is very much "out there". As much as I adored Evil!Sam, we never really got much of a chance to see actual Sam this episode. I would love to know more about his feelings and reactions to these course of events.
Jensen, of course, was phenomenal as always. Since everyone expects this greatness out of him, it isn't as pronounced. However, it shows real acting ability when one sells quiet moments as well as those louder moments. When he said, "I can't. I'd rather die," my heart broke. When Evil!Sam was mentally and physically torturing him, my heart broke even more. His every expression was on point. Again, not uncommon at all.
Overall, this is one of the best episodes the series thus far.

The Blue VW that Sam/Meg stole and parked in the garage...wasn't Ava's car a blue VW?

Someone wrote: "not one thing was wrong"
I disagree. The was one scene in which the writing was sloppy.
Dean getting shot by DemonSam: great. Dean falling over into the water: no problem with that. Dean's cell phone ringing when it should be waterlogged...really?
The writers made Dean seem weak and helpless after he was shot (in the shoulder - not fatal). The Dean we have come to love and know, would not have stopped and laid down.(or passed out-he didn't hit his friggin head) His brother was possessed by a DEMON, who already killed man while inside his brother. He would have used every bit of his strenth to get up and go after Sam. He would want to ensure that there would be NO WITNESSES to DemonSam hurting anyone else.
With his addrenaline pumping, Dean would have been long gone by the time Jo got to the dock.
Didn't anyone notice this out-of-character writing?

OMG: Jared completely blew me away! What a performance! He plays "evil" so amazingly well that it's eerie. I was so creeped out by Sam.
Jared made the bar scene what it was. Him and him alone. I almost forgot there was another actor there.
Great to see the return of Bobby. Jim Beaver (think that's his name) does wonderful job in character. I hear he will also be in this weeks episode.
Dean...poor guy, hasn't he been through enough already? He needs a Demon trying to tear him down like he needs a hole in his head. Seemed to me that maybe the Demon was testing Dean. Was it trying to see what it would take for Dean to turn on Sam, or if Dean could ever bring himself to do it? Of course, Jensen was dead-on with bringing Dean's emotions to life.
At the start of the episode I love the "jerky" editing that paralleled Dean's frantic state. Fabulous idea.
While this episode was fantastic, I had problems that were in connection to Jo's return. (no surprise, right?) Ok, Alona's acting has improved a bit, but her presence is still dull. The scene with her and Dean was borrrring...once again. I love Jensen. He is a talented actor and does an amazing portrayal of Dean, but every scene with him and Alona has been blah.
Was it just me or was Jo more hurt that the Demon was telling the truth about Dean seeing her as a silly schoolgirl than the possibility that John had killed her dad? Uh...ok...whatever.
Also: Mab, I agree with you. Why was Jo in this episode? How did the demon find her? The guy DemonSam killed was an expert hunter who no doubtly crossed demon's before. Bobby, well if this was MegDemon, she already knew where to find him (if not, the Demon was in Sam's mind). Jo on the other hand, is an amateur who hasn't made a name for herself, hasn't been out there long enough to. (If Jo had previously gone up against a Demon - she's be dead.) As far as we know, Sam and Dean didn't know where Jo was, so that leaves out mind reading. So....I don't get it. Did I miss something?
Michelle, you are correct, Alona/Jo has served the purpose and the door can now be closed - CW should send Alona to OTH. Also, I believe this show is bigger than the rating critics believe. Check out how many blogs for SN are on TV guide channel's website.
(Grey's Anatomy - people may as well be watching daytime tv.)

Fantastic episode!
Jared was amazing, he's such a talented actor.
Now I wish we could see evil Sam again!
The Sam&Dean moments were incredibly wonderful.
Dean will never be able to kill his baby brother.
I love this show!
I'm still not happy with Jo, I think the show could do without her, but she wasn't as bad as before.
The main problem with her character is the boring crush she has on Dean.
The scene with Jo and evil Sam was good, but then when she was nursing Dean it was lame again.
Let's leave the soap stories to other shows and bring some strong female characters that are not love interests and care about both brothers, not just one.
And please CW promote this amazing show!
We need a season three!

Jared Padalecki ... WOW ... I mean, we know he's great at playing good, gentle, kind, sweet, sensitive, angsty Sam but this new delicious bad!Sam was unexpected and thrilling. This was the BEST episode ever ... okay, well, maybe tied with Nightshifter. The acting was stellar ... from JP, AND from JA (I just have to comment though, for those who say that Jensen is the better actor -- HE'S GETTING THE BETTER LINES AND HIS CHARACTER IS GENERALLY MORE UNEVEN!!!! Jared just proved his acting prowess ten times over with this episode because he got GOOD LINES and a new Sam to play with). Those boys were HOT!!! this week. On. fire.
As for Jo ... okay, I did not enjoy her in previous episodes. I just could not believe that Dean could be interested in her. Schoolgirl is right! She looks like a kid. However, she was great this week. She was the perfect person for bad!Sam to taunt and grope and grab. And if we never see her again, she has served a lovely purpose in this episode. Good-bye Jo! I can now remember you with some fondness.
The only thing I have left to say is on the subject of ratings. WTF???? Why is this show not HUGE?! Who cares about Grey's Anatomy and whatever else is in this time slot (I don't know or care because I would never consider changing the channel!!!). I don't even like scary stuff, but I love these brothers and I can't wait to spend my hour with them each week. Please, CW, tell me you would not consider canceling this show. To hell with the ratings! It's the best dang show on television!!!

This was a great episode.
Cathryn Humphries has definitely proven herself a very fine addition to the Supernatural writing staff. The Usual Suspects was a wonderfully balanced episode and so was this one. BUABS was also very tightly written as well. There was still some humor but it fit and wasn't forced.
I have to admit my heart sank when I saw Jo was in this episode. I can't say that either of them seemed more affected by the fact that Jo had been threatened than they would have if anyone else had been threatened so I think demon possessed Sam's next victim could have been anyone and didn't need to be her. I hope this was her swan song because I just can't see what purpose she serves.
While Jared was definitely terrific here, I wasn't questioning any loyalties. :) Jensen got his hook in at "I don't want to" in the pilot and by the time Skin ended and he'd done such a brilliant job as the shapeshifter the line and the sinker had followed. I think he's one of the most underrated actors around. In this episode Jared definitely got a huge opportunity to shine. Jensen's role was less showy but subtly very powerful. All the love and care and sheer depth of feeling came out in 5 quietly spoken words "I can't. I'd rather die".

I love this show. I just can't say that enough. This episode blew me away. I've never posted on a SN board before so if you've discussed this already I'm sorry. Dean said to Sam that if it was the last thing he did, he would save him. Do you think this is foreshadowing and that eventually Dean will die to save Sam?

Absolutely loved every moment of this episode, not one thing was wrong.
I think both Jensen and Jared did an equally amazing job, they each had to act two completely different ways, and each did amazing.
I loved evil Sam Jared did great on acting like a demon.
I loved Jensen his facial expressions are amazing.
I never really liked Jo but she was not annoying in this episode at all, I guess that because she’s the one that left she didn’t see so pathetic? I don’t know why, I just liked her better in this episode.
Also I adore Bobby he’s just to cool!
Another fantastic episode! Next week looks…interesting, I can’t wait.
I hope this show stays on for a long time, its really amazing show.
I think that the CW should keep everything the same; the network is perfect just as it is, especially Supernatural and One Tree Hill. PLEASE keep them on for a long long time!!

I think both Jensen and Jared did a great job. Jensen, as always, makes Dean such a dynamic character.
When Dean told Sam that he wouldn't kill him, and when Dean said he die first? Jensen's delivery and facial expressions were spot-on!

Well, When I first saw the previews for this show, I was excited. Seeing Sam finally turn evil. I just couldn't wait!! This one was almost my favorite, nothing still could out-pass the benders, but still it was unbelieveable from the opening to the ending. I really hope Supernatural does not go off, people would be stupid. Also on the whole Jo thing, she was a good, I was happy to see her back. Although, I wished it would have been someone Sam has liked in the past season, ie. a certain someone from a certain episode 'Provenance'. I think Taylor Cole would have made it more exciting. The funniest part of the episode was the whole "justin timberlake" is a triple threat. HA!. Dean did great on mocking this one. The creepiest part was the whole "my daddy shoot your daddy in the heee-ad". just sam's tone of voice in that was enough to make the hair on my neck stand up.
But bravo. GREAT one! Can't wait for next weeks. (although I dont think it will be all that great)

Just an excellent, excellent episode. Probably the best so far. I have never been as enthused about a television show as I am about Supernatural. Actually, right now, I'm looking for some kind of apparel to show my support -- fan made, because the CW won't give me any! I've only found one hoodie that's up to snuff. Can you poke the higher ups to get on this for me? *g*
But back to the episode! Padalecki just blew me away. Such an excellent and nuanced performance. He showed a range and versitility that gives me hope that this show could go on through a blockbuster third season.
Jo was great this episode. After they stopped dangling her like meat on a hook, amazingly, a real character appeared. If they can remember that it takes two people to have a relationship and therefore Dean and Sam's partners need to be individuals and characters before "love interests," I think the show will have a better go of things next time around, and maybe even with Jo far, far in the future. Of course, I never hated the idea of the Jo character! Just what was done with her.
Brilliant work. I'm looking foward to the rest of this season.

Here's why I'm glad they brought Jo back for this episode:
Demon!Sam needed to menace somebody we'd met before, someone they knew. It just wouldn't have had the same sickening punch if he took on a random person. We needed to see the demon in Sam not only get horribly, frighteningly, "I can't believe they're going there" psycho, but also revel in pushing his victim's buttons, getting into the psychological torture aspect as well as the straight violence aspect. And for it to carry the same power, it needed to be someone who wouldn't be able to hold his or her own against Sam. It needed to be someone we could seriously see him victimizing, not just fighting. That's what gave me the feeling that "Oh my god, Dean, he really might be too far gone. You really might have to kill him."
Think about it -- did his killing the hunter have the same power? No, because Dean (and the watchers) were thinking "OK, there has to be context, something happened, this guy must have started it, it was a fight, not an execution, something like that." We could explain it away. But with Jo, the demon in Sam wasn't protecting itself or fighting back against something, it was taking and innocent victim and terrorizing her for the sheer pleasure of it.
He couldn't have done that with Ellen, because not only is Ellen too tough for him (and most of the rest of the world, in my opinion), but also because Dean had been calling her asking about Sam, so she would have known something was wrong the moment he walked in the door. It couldn't have been Bobby, because dude, the man routinely spikes his beer with holy water. NOBODY gets the drop on Bobby. That doesn't leave too many people we've seen before that could represent the same sort of "line too far" for Sam to cross.
And I think Jo was well written and acted this time out. She's inexperienced, and that's how Sam got the drop on her. She fought back as best she could, but she was overmatched from the beginning. The, when Dean drove Sam off, she didn't fall into the fetal position and weep for three days, which I would have done. She pulled herself together and went looking for Dean. She helped him, pulled him out of the water, patched him up, and then -- and this is the key part -- backed down when Dean told her point blank that she wouldn't be able to help and would just be getting in the way. She grew up. She realized it wasn't about her. She sort of realized that she's a secondary character in the brother's lives, that they're the stars. And she saw her idealism about the Dean guy die a little -- the romantic notion of a hunter fighting the good fight and then enjoying the love of a good woman (which I imagine was what was running through her head) fizzled when she saw the true brutality and single-mindedness needed to survive as a hunter. She's more realistic. I liked that, and I hope we see her again.

You’ve said most of what I’m thinking so I won’t repeat it all. This was truly a FANTASTIC episode with the intensity reminiscent of the masterpiece that is Devil’s Trap and easily moving up to the top of my favorites list.
This was Jared’s episode to shine and the brilliance he exuded was blinding. Balanced with Jensen’s consistent excellence made for one powerful and emotional episode. Loved having Bobby back and what a wonderful twist to have Meg return. It was also painfully heartbreaking to see the lengths Dean would go to for Sam and the pain he would endure. And those three simple words of “I’d rather die” were probably the most powerful of the whole season to date.
But there is one area I must disagree on. When the opening credits ran and I saw the name Alona Tal, my heart literally sank and my stomach became queasy. Having been left with a very bitter taste in my mouth from previous Jo appearances I feared her presence would taint an otherwise incredible episode. Luckily, she was just tolerable and I pray that this “good bye” lasts for a good long time. She was a slight improvement, but still looks like jailbait... and a “little sister” third-wheel is superfluous. Other than for “good bye” her appearance really served no real purpose. She was simply a damsel-in-distress and the revelation of the events of her father and John could have been handled in a conversation with Ellen just as well.
Jo aside, the episode was fantastic! So, where are we now at the raincheck count? I think Dean just banked a few more freebies after tonight. Hey Dean, use them wisely!

Oh hell ya!!!!! Evil Sam was so hot in this episode!
A little scray ya, but what a hunk!.... Even though it was very refreshing to see Sammy go all evil, I do like good old Sam and his puppy-dog eyes! I almost cried when Sam asked Dean to shoot him, all I was thinking was , don't do it Dean he's your little brother! But deep down I knew he couldn't do it(he loves Sam way to much to kill)
I thougth it was great to have Jo and Bobby back there really good charactors for Supernatural!! Dean did so well in this episode, I just love Jensen Ackles as an actor!!
Can't wait to see next weeks episode!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the whole thing plus Sam/Jop is so hot!
Posted by: Bambi | February 10, 2007 9:41 PM
Great, great episode! Everything about it was just fantastic. Though I did groan out loud when Jo came back - I just don't like her. I loved seeing her get the crap kicked out of her though and I'm kinda hoping that was the sort of farewell episode to her. We'll have to see.
There were some parts that I loved... like the look on Dean's face when whoever was on the phone said 'Justin Timberlake is a triple threat' and the 'what did I miss?' From Sam only to get clocked by Dean. Excellent!
Evil Sam was great, he did an excellent job! It was chilling and freaking. The whole first part of the episode I was yelling at poor Sammy.. then to find out he was possessed... oye!
And poor Dean.. man.. I feel for him every week! The guy just can't get a break!
I'm not so sure about next week's episode. I'm thinking it is going to be a complete dud.. it looks like total cheese.. but we'll have to wait and see.

This episode was FANTASTIC!best episode of the season! as everyone has already said the boys were amazing!! Evil!Sam was just so good, Jared completely knocked it out of the park, I was SO impressed by his acting in this episode. I have always thought he was an amazing actor but this episode just completely proved that.. But lets not forget about Jensen who is also so amazing. Seeing Dean so worried about Sam is just heartbreaking and it is where Jensen shines the most I think..
Loved seeing the return of Bobby!! my favorite recurring character.. As soon as Evil!Sam got to his house I knew that Bobby knew that Sam was possessed b/c he is just that cool!! I absolutly loved the holy water in the beer that was priceless.. he also had one of my favorite lines "Don't try to con a con man" gotta love Bobby.. I hope we see a lot more of him..
There were so many good lines in this episode:
(Dean about shooting Sam)"I can't.. I'd rather die" (this line made me let out a big AWW! LOL! it is just so cute and heartbreking)
"My daddy shot your daddy in the head" (Evil!Sammy is so creepy, this line made me cringe)
Clerk-"guy came in stinkin drunk, got a 40 from the fridge and started chugging"
Dean-"this guy.. you drinkin' malt liqour"
Clerk-"not after he whipped the bottle at my freakin head"
Dean-"this guy" (One of the funniest scenes in the episode I loved it!)
(About Sam being missing) "I'm losin my mind here" (Jensen delivered this line so great)
loved the episode! Can't wait for next week!

This was a really excellent episode.
Jared just blew me away; he really got to stretch those acting muscles. Poor Dean! Sam shot him. Regardless, Dean is sticking by Sam, he will do anything to protect / save Sam. Those brother dynamics just reel me in every week. Way to go to the ENTIRE cast and crew. Kudos. Job well done.

[chick flick moment]
Jared dude, this was your episode and you owned it. Your Dee-monic Sam was note perfect as was your lost and confused faux-Sam. Just the right amount of creep and menace without crossing the line into camp. Plus you were hot like on red kryptonite hot. Really! Well done!
Alona, while I think most of the problems with Jo were in the writing and direction rather than your performance, you really stepped up this week and made me really care about your character. So kudos and maybe we'll see you again sometime.
Jim Beaver, Bobby is an awesome addition to the Supernatural community. Never change dude, never change.
And Jensen. Last but never least. You just bring it week in and week out. Supernatural would not be what it is without your Dean Winchester. Thanks for sharing your immense talent and your dedication with us each week.

sam was so hott this episode
really turned me on lol
dean's been my favorite since the beginning tho
but sam was SO hot!!

Wow, this episode was amazing. One of my all-time favorites. Jared kicked major ass. Really. I'm a Dean/Jensen girl all the way, but man, Jared, you were right on the money. I think Demonic!Sam might have kicked Red!Kryptonite!Clark out of first place of my Good Guys Gone Bad/Incredibly Hot list. Plus, besides being extra good-looking, Demonic!Sam was all kinds of creepy. The "my daddy shot your daddy in the head" part was truly creep-tastic.
Not to be outdone, Jensen did a killer job with this episode, even though I must admit that Jared had the stand-out performance. Man, was Dean in denial during the first half of this episode. And all the Dean angst was yummy.
There were some AMAZING lines, too. Not necessarily funny, but just amazing. Case in point: when Dean says, "I can't...I'd rather die," after Sam asks Dean to kill him for the first time in the episode. Also, Sam's (alright, well, demon!Sam's, but I didn't know that yet) little, "I don't remember anything" at the beginning with that look on his face? Killed. Me.
Another thing I liked about this episode was that Jo didn't make me want to jump off of a very tall building, proving once again that miracles do happen. Bravo, writers!
So basically: J2, I love you; Kripke, you own my soul; Camera guys, gorgeous cinematography (especially with the teaser...it was my favorite so far); Alona Tal, getting better.
Posted by: kelsey | February 10, 2007 2:13 PM
This episode was absolutely fantastic! It was so intense. We were talking to the TV the whole time, first trying to figure out what was going out with Sam, then yelling at him to stop what he was doing! :)
Posted by: Jessica | February 10, 2007 1:20 PM
This episode ranks right up there with "IMTOD", IMO. Everything about this episode was damn near perfect. Evil!Sam is scary. Period. And just let me give Dean a hug. He looks like he needs one.
I want to know why this episode had to suffer in the ratings, though. People, you don't know what you're missing!
And BTW, my alliance never waivered (Jensen is my man all the way) but it did make me love Jared just a little bit more. :o)

I LOVED THIS EPISODE!!! I think it is THE BEST episode of season 2. I love Jo,I don't get why people are bad mouthing her. I thought her role was great!! Evil Sam Freaked me out!! I could not believe it was Meg!! This was a fantastic episode, I hope they do more like it.
Posted by: mj | February 10, 2007 10:25 AM
OMFG!
It was awesome...I've always loved Jared, but last night he rocked...He's never been this good...Evil!Sam kicks ass!:)
Jo is not really my favourite but the plot was great and I think it's kinda an end to her story(save the get revenge on papa maybe?)...Bobby was awesome as always and I really enjoyed the funny moments too(Justin T., at the shop...) Very good episode...Season 2: IMTOD, BornUaBS, Nightshifter, SS...
Great job!

Jared AND Jensen are both phenominal actors. Why must we compare their acting skills? Let's just agree that their are fans on either side, with some in the middle. I love both the boys, Sammy a bit more... but Dean makes my day too!
Excellent episode! One of the best, not THE best... that would go with the Nightshifter episode... but certainly kept me on my toes! I loved Jo and Bobby. Both did amazing in their roles... and evil demon meg who was sam and is now out there... gonna come back at the boys... MEEEPS! *hides head* I don't know how much more I can take of this haha.
Posted by: anneabell | February 10, 2007 12:46 AM
Jared was simply sensational in this episode. It was a demon, but watching Sam let loose of the constraints of his morality and humanity was a wonderful sight to behold.
Dean's desperation from the initial scenes of looking for Sam, to his determination to protect Sam at all costs was wrenching. Especially when he realized it was Sam that killed the other hunter and his protectiveness kicked into high gear.
While Jo was less grating than any of her other appearances, I have no idea why she was needed in this episode. Why did Sam have to go find her? A random actor, in a rewritten scene could just as easily have served the purpose of hostage of luring Dean to him. Or even better, go straight to Bobby. That would have made for a better and longer presence for Bobby, a far more interesting character than Jo has ever been. Other than her appearance being a possible goodbye, all this episode shows is that she has no place in this show. And retconning, cleaning up her attitude and gracing her with some maturity doesn't make me care about her anymore that I did previously. If Possessed!Sammy had skewered her, it would have served the same purpose as the random hunters death.

This was a very excellent episode. Jared clearly relishes playing evil!Sam and he was all kinds of awesome.
Jensen also did a phenomenal job with a much less showy part this week. He made me for fall for Dean all over again.
While Jared deserves all the praise he gets for his work these last two episodes, he's just finally stepping up to the standard that Jensen has set for a season-and-a-half. So yeah, no danger of me switching allegiances any time soon.

I agree that this was a wonderful episode.
Roxanne, I was also questioning my loyalty this episode. I love Jensen but this episode I also really loved Jared. He plays an awesomw baddie.
Also, I loved the return of Bobby. He is my favorite of the hunters that keep showing up. I hope that we will see more of him in the future.
In addition, this episode I totally loved the character of Jo. Before I didn't really but wanted to because the actress was also on Veronica Mars. However this episode I felt for her. I would love to see her return.
A great episode all around. Now if only we could get more people to watch!
Posted by: Thelma | February 9, 2007 10:31 PM
"Jensen fans everywhere were questioning their loyalty this episode."
Roxanne, this is no true, no everywhere. Jared was great, but Jensen did a great job too, I really liked it.

Wow..wow..and WOW! I loved this episode, I really didn't expect that he was posessed by the demon but then after you find out that he was...you notice that the previews in the beginning kind of gave it away because it was talking about how you need to get the demons in that circle and they are powerless, but I still didn't expect it, my sister ruined it for me haha.
I liked seeing Sam play evil for once, it was a whole new side of him. He has a killer evil laugh! I really didn't think that the demon could strike back like that, so that was a nice surprise. Otherwise it would've been too routine for them to just exorcise it like that.
I CAN'T BELIEVE HE REALLY SHOT DEAN! I was soo shocked! I could almost feel his pain when Sam was sticking his finger in the gun shot wound.
Anyway, it was a super hot episode. I'm not a big fan of Jo so I'm glad they kept her role pretty small, thats bearable.
I loveee Jared and Jensen!!! Call me guys :: wink wink ::
Posted by: Sana | February 9, 2007 9:27 PM
Evil Sam was GREAT!! Very reminiscent of Angelus on Buffy.
Posted by: Mary | February 9, 2007 9:01 PM
I loved this episode as well. It's depressing that the best episode of the season, during sweeps, even gets season LOW ratings
Posted by: Jenny | February 9, 2007 8:39 PM
Oh Jared..... Jared... Jared.... Jensen fans everywhere were questioning their loyalty this episode. Hell I know I did.... and I feel so so bad LOL
Evil!Sammy is pure platinum and Jared never missed a mark. There is nothing in this world you could say negative about this episode... nothing... NOTHING!!!!!!!!! If I start gushing I know I wont stop... wait... I could comment about a few of Jos lines but I will be good... I can see their point.. but again leaving it alone.
The brilliance of this episode is just...... guh I have no words.
Posted by: Roxanne | February 9, 2007 8:07 PM
yeah amazing epi but i still dont like jo lol glad they hardly used her lets keep it this way shall we?
Posted by: anonymous | February 9, 2007 7:37 PM
I loved this episode! It's now one of my favorites.
I actually felt sorry for Jo when Evil!Sam was taunting her. It wasn't so much for what he said regarding Dean, but about her Dad. It sorta creeped me out when he said, "my daddy shot your daddy in the heeee-eeead!" yet I love how he said it.
I thought it was awesome that Sam was posessed by 'Meg'! That was the coolest thing. When I first heard about it though, I was all, "Okay I know I said it would be cool if Meg somehow returned, but I didn't exactly mean for it to be this way." Now I'm glad it WAS this way because it allowed Jared to show how great of an actor he can be. He does the evil stuff VERY well. Kudos to you, Padalecki. If you ever read this, that is. Which you probably won't, but whatever.
All in all, this was an awesome episode & next weeks looks a bit corny, but I'm sure it'll be funny.
