The CW's Future: Reality-Heavy?
We’ve got about a month and a half to wait before we know what the CW’s fall schedule will look like – which shows are coming back, which shows are leaving for good, and what new pilots are being picked up. And yes, the wait is killing us.
But an article in Broadcasting & Cable gave us something to think about: About a third of the network’s 17 fall pilots are reality shows. Plus, one of the potential scripted shows is a comedy set behind the scenes at a reality show.
That makes some sense, when you think about it –
America’s Next Top Model and Beauty and the Geek have been two of the CW’s biggest ratings successes, plus the network's latest reality show, Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll is drawing a devoted audience. Why shouldn’t The CW go with what it knows works?
We’ve already heard about one of the potential shows – Crowned, the mother/daughter beauty pageant, sounds deliciously trashy. ![]()
Another potential show on the block: Viewsers, a show that collects the web’s best user-generated content and allows viewers to see what others are saying and communicate with them live on-air. Considering how much fun we have trolling YouTube for CW-related fan-vids, we can see the appeal of this idea.
What do you think – do you tune in for the reality programming, or do you prefer the scripted programs? Does the user-created video show appeal to you? Would you rather see more shows along the lines of Top Model or Beauty and the Geek, or Supernatural and One Tree Hill? What’s your favorite show on the network and what do you want to see more of? Let us know in the comments!

Due to the writers' strike I was browsing the net looking for something else to watch. After I found all of these comments I decided to give Supernatural a try. Boy am I glad I did!! I loved every episode. I actually stayed up through the night watching every episode for the first season in one sitting. Then, after the season 1 finale I had to watch a couple more to find out what happened... Wow, what a show!!! In two days I have watched every episode for 2 plus seasons... What a blast!
I normally don't watch much TV. I am not a browser. I look for shows at the beginning of the season, plan out a few shows to watch. Then, they either maintain my interest, or they don't. There are several nights during the week that I don't watch any TV at all (Thursday happens to be one of them). The only shows I watched on The CW before this was ANTM and Reaper. Just as an FYI, I bumped into Reaper in September on iTunes and really liked it, but the picture for Supernatural didn't grab my attention. I kind of thought it was some kind of reality show or documentary where the two main guys just covered stories about myths, legends, and ghost stories. I only watch one or two reality shows at a time, so I thought that Supernatural was not for me.
Boy was I wrong, this show is perfect! The genre that always captures me is a well written exciting series just like Supernatural. It is kind of scary for me to think that I might never have found this show without its presence on the web. I totally missed FOX's FireFly because I missed the advertising for it. By the time I found FireFly it was already cancelled.
I am amazed that I missed the buzz about this show for this long because it is right down my alley. I have now pushed my Mom and sister into watching the show with me. I am going to buy the DVDs next weekend and we are going to have a couple of marathons to get them caught up with the series. I LOVE Supernatural!! I can't imagine ever getting tired of this story.

Supernatural is one of the best written shows on television right now. There isn't the drama that the soap operas and other primetime shows have. Yet the scifi aspect of the show is "real" enough not to feel flakey. It's a terrific show with terrific characters and actors. If it's not broke-don't fix it! Keep Supernatural the way it is and on the CW! You'll regret it if you don't. :)

I am not a fan of reality tv. We need more shows like supernatural. It has been an awesome show since day one and always keeps you comming back for more. This is the only show that I absolutely have to see every week. Supernatural should definately come back for a third season.

Not since the X-Files (an exemplary piece of TV) have I been so addicted to a show. Its engaging storylines, cinematic quality and top-notch production are simply unparalleled. There is so much more that needs to be told about the Winchester boys, and should be told. To cancel it would be to say, "No, in fact, I don't like good television." Why would anyone work in this field if they don't like good television?

I can really add little to the overwhelming, articulate and passionate voices posted here AGAINST reality TV, except to say that IF the CW’s BEST scripted show, Supernatural, is not renewed for a third season (although I’m 99.9% confident it will) and if reality TV is the future of TV, and the CW in particular, I am done with TV. Period. For good. I will sell my television and not think twice about it. Why bother with television’s sorry mediocrity and mindless, brain-numbing drivel, when the entire world exists on the internet? Between my passion for books and the bounty of the net, I will have no use for or need of TV. Ever.
CW, I think you may severely underestimate your audience, which, by the way, is a lot bigger than your narrowly targeted core ‘demographic’. Reality shows may be cheap to produce and get you cheap, short term ratings...but they still remain cheap, in every bad sense of the word. Many, many out here are intelligent, savvy and thinking viewers. With all due respect, you insult us by continuously trying to shove pointless and dumbed-down ‘reality’ garbage down our throats. I watch none of it.
Next year, no one is going to remember or care who won ANTM or PCD...but ten...twenty years from now, I GUARANTEE you, people WILL remember the Winchesters of Supernatural.
Supernatural is the ONLY show I watch religiously. In fact, it’s pretty much the ONLY show I watch. Instead of trying to make viewers conform to your very limited and narrow concept of ‘good’ TV, i.e. reality shows, which you promote very heavily, how about keeping and crafting high quality scripted series the viewers want and demand...like Supernatural...shows that will stand the test of time, be syndication powerhouses and make us hug you and our televisions again?
PAY ATTENTION TO THE VIEWERS! Back in the late sixties, some bright TV execs decided that the ‘cult’ series Star Trek, despite a huge and rabid fan base, and despite being thrown into the black hole of the Friday night death slot (sound familiar, guys?), was not worthy of renewal. FANS KNEW BETTER.
So, CW, please think long term...save yourself and us a lot of heartache and grief...renew Supernatural. Like Star Trek, Supernatural, the phenomenon, is NOT going away. Now into our second glorious season, it has found its loyal and rapidly growing niche and is hitting its stride...it is firmly entrenched in our hearts, minds and souls...and soon, our wallets, as well, with all the promotional and tie-in items coming out.
If Supernatural goes, I go. CW, you will never see me again.
Do not break our hearts. We need heroes. We need the Winchesters. We need Supernatural.
SUPERNATURAL rules the CW! Not only is it classy, smart and razor sharp, it is creative, innovative and thrilling. It is a total package kind of show...it deftly blends scary, drama, action, comedy, angst, snark, mystery, humor, intelligence and playfulness. It never fails to deliver...week after week. It makes us howl with laughter...it breaks our heart with tears...it scares us so we watch with the lights on. It is highly addictive and its legions of devoted and passionate fans continue to grow. I predict that Supernatural is destined to become a classic...along the lines of X-Files and Star Trek.
Supernatural is truly in a class by itself. It is SO much MORE than a simple ‘horror’ series. In fact, calling it a ‘horror’ series does it a great disservice and injustice. It is ultimately a story of HEROES...something our society sorely needs in this day and age of cynicism.
It’s focus and central theme is NOT the ‘monster of the week’, although the guys see their share of them. Its focus, first and foremost, has always been about family, good v. evil, moral and ethical dilemmas, brotherly love...and plenty of heart.
Its stars, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, are two of TV’S most talented, gifted and versatile actors. They very often deliver stunning performances. They are phenomenal as the Winchester brothers and their onscreen chemistry is nothing short of astounding. Their brotherly bickering, bantering and quips alone are worth watching.
The powerhouse of Eric Kripke & Co. and the show’s cast and crew are MASTERS at mixing up the various elements of the show. How many shows today can do comedy AND drama equally well in the same series...the same EPISODE? Take you from screaming laughter to crushing heartbreak in 90 seconds flat? It takes REAL talent to pull that off...MAJOR talent...and the Supernatural team has it in spades.
Devoted and passionate fans clearly see Supernatural for the exceptionally fine show it is. We greatly appreciate the show’s complex character...one that cannot be neatly pigeon-holed. We watch and dearly love it for it’s many neatly overlapping layers...and the delicious twists and turns!
Sam and Dean Winchester are normal guys, who happen to have very abnormal jobs. That’s one of the things that makes Supernatural so special. The boys are everyday guys...blue-collar heroes, if you will...the guys next door...fighting the good fight against the bad that surrounds us. They are good guys who do very good things for total strangers.
Great role models, anyone?
I can honestly say that Dean and Sam Winchester are the first and only characters I’ve ever truly, deeply LOVED. They, along with the storyline, have been created so masterfully, that I passionately care about them and what happens to them...almost like they’re family. OK...they ARE family. I have invested my heart, mind and soul in the Winchesters and their road trip. From the very first episode...without hesitation...I jumped into the backseat of their black ‘67 Chev Impala and said, “Where we headed today, guys?” I will follow them ANYWHERE, ANYTIME...without question.
Supernatural is a 24K masterpiece.

I'm sick of reality shows. My life has enough drama in it that I don't need to watch someone else's on TV.
I know you have to try to appeal to wide audience with different tastes, but scripted shows will always be best and Supernatural is the best show on TV and certainly on the CW.
Pay attention to the gold you have and promote it better. I'm sorry to say I hardly ever see promotions for SN and I can't understand it.
Why aren't you promoting the best thing you've got?

Supernatural is the BEST show on the CW network. Cancelling this show would be suicide cause then you would lose a gem. This show is extremely well written( because it is very well researched) and very well acted and directed. Jensen and Jared bring so much heart to their characters every week. To the first time veiwer, it might seem like a show about Demons and ghosts and spirits. But this show is so much more. It's all about the emotions and angst and most importantly the relationship between the brothers. A lot of shows out there completely lack this amazing combination. This is where Supernatural wins. And it has done very very well in a blood bath of a time slot. Kudos to you guys!!
I am an avid fan of The X-Files and always thought that no other show would ever be as good but boy, was I wrong. Supernatural is exactly what this network needs to be a success.
There's enough of Reality Television on tv. I agree that ANTM and Dolls attract a lot of veiwers but there's a simple reason to that. They get a LOT of promotion. Everytime I put on the tv, I never fail to see a trailer for ANTM or Dolls.
And quite honestly, most of us watch tv to escape reality and the normal everyday life. Scripted shows bring that much needed relief which reality shows don't provide.
Me and million others would be completely devastated and heart broken if Supernatural is cancelled.
Bottom line? Enough of reality tv! Keep the good, deserving shows, like Supernatural, on air.
I know that it's all about ratings but it's also about good, quality television.

The only television show I watch with any regularity is SUPERNATURAL. It is unique, it has a stable and effective rhythym, excellent acting and writing, a diverse fanbase, and it has held up against CSI and Grey's Anatomy. Basically, it has appeal on multiple levels.
With what I just said in mind, would I watch reality tv show after reaity tv show on your network? No, never. Enough with the reality tv shows!
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of the CW right now is that it is a network with a very homogenous group of viewers, which limits the abiltiy of the network to grow. You need diversity of show type to reach a wide audience and raise viewership. Statisics aren't going to change by creating a surplus of one kind of show. Eventually, people will get tired and you'll lose even more viewers in the long run.
The best networks around have a blend of scripted dramas and reality television. There's room for both. And when you do make new scripted dramas, choose ones that have broad appeal like SUPERNATURAL does.

Reality TV has become the easy way to go on TV, and there are so many that most get lost in the shuffle, while scripted shows like Lost, Bones, and Battlestar Galactica really shine.
Supernatural is the next X-Files. It is BY FAR the most intelligent and well-written original show on the CW. It deserves as much promotion as the CW can spare, and the biggest spotlight you can find.
With Grey's Anatomy beginning to slip (according to critics), Thursday may not be a bad slot for much longer. Even now, I doubt any other show could hold its own on Thursday the way Supernatural has. No other show on the CW can touch it in quality or fanbase. Drop tired shows like 7th Heaven and put the money toward promoting Supernatural. The fan base will thank you, and I believe the payoff will be much greater.

The only must-see show for me is Supernatural. Personally, I'm not a fan of reality shows, as I appreciate a program that allows me to sit down with my family so we can enjoy it together. Supernatural is smartly written and brilliantly acted, and in my humble opinion, replacing it (or any other high caliber show) with mindless reality programs will only succeed in diminishing the quality of your network.

The only reason I, or any of my friends, have ever watched the CW was for Veronica Mars. If that gets canceled, reality TV shows hold no interest for me.
Posted by: NicoleBauer | April 11, 2007 9:50 AM
I consider myself a consumer of media shows of a variety of types, from dramas to situation comedy to game shows, among others.
However, none of them are reality TV shows. NONE. I understand that "reality" television carries a lower cost-to-produce, but I truly believe the payoff in the long run is and continues to be a reduction in the quality of television-- and a reduction in the numbers watching.
Intelligent, well-scripted television that tells a good story has not only the strength of immediate-airing, but a longer positive financial impact in terms of followup media sales, such as downloadable episodes and DVDs.
Why do I mention this? Because I watch Supernatural, regularly. I record it, I've purchased the DVDs for myself and as gifts, I've purchased episodes from iTunes-- and even though I watch it recorded, I ALSO watch the commercials in order to pay attention to who sponsors good television. I firmly believe this show has the potential to be a pop culture phenomenon like the X-Files was, and to bring to the CW the same sort of benefit that XF brought to Fox.
Please keep Supernatural on the air. Give me a reason to continue watching and supporting quality TV on the CW.
Posted by: Aspen | April 11, 2007 12:03 AM
Supernatural is definitely my favorite show on the CW, and probably my favorite show on television right now. It's the only thing I watch regularly every week, rather than waiting for re-runs. I can't miss it! (Too bad about all those hiatuses and stuff...) I really hope it lasts for a long time...

I pretty much live on my computer. Only three shows drag me away from it for any period of time, Supernatural being one of them.
And even then, when I get back on my computer, the first thing I do is look up crap related to Supernatural. I'm definately not alone in this. All that needs be said about why this show needs to be kept around has already been said, I think, by others. All you have to do is look on YouTube or fanfiction.net to see how crazy people are about the show. And I guarantee you they're the type of viewers who return again and again.
Supernatural is my weekly ritual. Please don't take that from me.
I realize reality television (which I've never been able to watch, personally) is cheap to produce and usually requires no more thought than a bunch of bored people sitting around during lunch break. But that's the greasy, rancid, roach-infested fast food of televishion. Give me the steak of drama! The potatoes of character developement! And if there's a wine of fantastic writing, that'd go just perfectly with the meal.
More plot, more thought, more excitement!

god please no reality shows. Supernatural and Veronica Mars I love. All of the reality shows start to blend together
Posted by: lane | April 7, 2007 10:02 PM
I only make it a point to watch five or six shows on television a week - none of them are reality shows and only one of them is on the CW: Supernatural. I'd hate to see this show taken off the air. I love the bond between the two brothers, and the blend of drama/suspense/humor keeps me coming back week after week.

Reality TV is the very worst thing to ever hit TV. It undermines human intelligence, and implys that everyone had the maturity of 10-year-old. Becoming reality heavy is suicide for any network.
Great scripted shows, give a network integrity, and style. You have a great scripted show, "Supernatural", but it is underpromoted and in a timeslot of death. Advice: PROMOTE IT! This scipted show, and any other decent scripted show can but a developing network in the same league as others. Reality is short lived, and I predict that in less than 5 years, it will have finished its too long life, and have gone off the cliff. Scripted is the way to go.
Posted by: Kate | April 7, 2007 7:26 AM
Survivor, American Idol, ... Wherever you look you see reality TV Shows that call themselves "the real deal" or "awesome" and "different". However, my personal opinion to that: They're crap. Really, if I want to watch reality I go into the street right in front of my house. I watch TV because I want to see something else. Fiction.
I am aware fo the fact that many shows get cancelled because they don't get enough viewers. However, I want to speak in favor of my favorite show: Supernatural.
It has a really tough time slot, having to fight against CSI and Grey's Anatomy is not easy. However it has held its spot and it has kept most of its viewers. With a little bit more advertising and reruns at a different time (so people can also record it, when they're not recording anything else!) it would be a lot better off.
It's one of the best shows out there right now, it's refreshing, funny, but also scares the crap out of you (or me?) every single week. I would like to keep it that way. Every single person that I told about this show is amazed by it and instantly drawn to it. I am certain if given another season it will be doing just as great.
Posted by: Carolin | April 6, 2007 9:44 PM
Honestly, why would anyone watch Reality TV escapes my understanding, but if there actually are people who like it - and don't merely watch because there's nothing else in tv - well, of course you have to consider them.
Like many posters before me, I love Supernatural, and every week the storyline just sucks me in and doesn't let go.
I would like to urge the network to keep to their slogan, and be free to be original: no matter which show (though I'd love for it to be Supernatural), keep the scripted programs, raise the standards and let me see GREAT quality tv. I want to see well-made television, I want to watch tv shows that make me feel, and not lose myself in the depressing well that is reality programming.
There are some series that sell DVD even years after their ending (Buffy, anyone?); the network obviously believed in it, and focused good marketing strategies on not only keeping the show floating, but raising it to levels rarely shown before.
What can you do? Play to your strenghts. Interacting with the fan base is a great start to have an idea of what the public really wants to see.
Choosing smart timeslots is another point. You pit Supernatural against CSI and Grey's Anatomy, and still, the fans surprise you by their constant high ratings. That should tell you that we fans try our best to show you that we care about what we watch and like. And when there is the need, we fight long and hard for our show's survival on the screen.
Last, but not least; be really, really innovative and once, or twice, renew a show for two years instead of one: I bet that great storylines, and great scripted tv will come out.
Posted by: Allie | April 6, 2007 5:55 PM
there are too many reality shows as it is and most are crap. they are fine if you want to put them during the off season but dont break up the regular season with them. You see how well that went over this last year. You have fans pissed about OTH and Supernatural/Smallville. Order more episodes of the great shows and keep your fans happy otherwise we can find other forms of entertainment.
Posted by: Rose | April 6, 2007 5:58 AM
I used wanted to say that I live in the uk and I love supernatural - I am not a teenager or someone who watches sn because the brothers are hunky. This is THE BEST show on tv at the moment by a long way in my mind and I would be devestated if it was cancelled. This show truly keeps me on the edge of my seat, it is the only show I would drop everything to watch. The acting, production, story lines are all amazing.
Posted by: Kimberley | April 5, 2007 9:34 AM
With the advent of seemingly mindless reality shows and the predictable and over played dramatizing of inner conflict, how can anyone take a show like Supernatural off and replace it with reality TV?
Yes Supernatural is a horror movie every week but it is so much more than that. It's about the bonds of family. It raises questions that have to be answered. It never fails to sweep you away. Daring you to get lost in the story and all of its undercurrents. How can the CW even think about replacing this amazing show with reality TV? Especially since it attracts not only teenage girls but people of all ages and sex. To replace Supernatural would be like cutting off the CW's own leg.
Posted by: yasmine32068 | April 5, 2007 8:25 AM
Nothing on television turns me off more quickly than reality shows, and some currently airing are not only repulsive, they are an insult to one's intelligence. Please, if you wish your network to be taken seriously and ultimately succeed, add more quality scripted shows to your venue.
A perfect example of a "quality scripted show" is SUPERNATURAL, which is the only show I currently watch on the CW. With the two leading actors only in their twenties, it has garnered an enormously devout fanbase comprising an incredible age range; only a finely crafted show can manage such a feat. As an upper-middle class woman in her 40's, I am not interested in watching a teenage soap drama nor another cheezy sit-com with a piped in laughtrack. As I do my bit to help promote Supernatural, I am finding that my circle of acquaintances are either not aware of your network, or have you pidgeonholed as network only for younger, urban viewers.
As you consider your upcoming lineup, please keep in mind those of us who would like to support you...AND your advertisers. And please...keep Supernatural on the air.

SUPERNATURAL is a MUST KEEP show.
If the CW decides to take Supernatural off the air then I'm giving up on television. I'm so sick of reality tv!! I'm sick of GREAT scripted shows being cancelled because of stupid "unscripted" reality tv.
Please, listen to us fans, listen to what WE want to see (SUPERNATURAL), listen to what we DON'T want to see (REALITY TV), afterall, we are the ones who can make or break the network.
SUPERNATURAL will go on...I have faith!

Even though I love America's Next top Model and even (sometimes) Beauty and the Geek, I think the one show that holds my attention on the CW is Supernatural.
It really is an odd-ball show on the nextwork, just because it is so opposite the girlish hype that many of the other shows posess. But the hot guys on the show really served to bring in the female viewers.
Personally, I'm a girly girl, and having a show with two hot brothers (AND a great plot) on the same network as reality shows doesn't bother me at all. Supernatural deserves a different type of advertising, however... I think the show has done pretty well on its own to draw in the viewers it has, but being paired with even more girly shows is almost demeaning, especially because of its time slot. So if I were given an option between more reality shows and more shows like Supernatural (the hardcore, scripted type of show), I would definately go with the scripted shows. After watching reality TV I feel zombified, but Supernatural actually makes me think.

'REALITY' television is just a cheap alternative.
It will NEVER Live-up to the standards of immense satisfaction one can get from watching a 'GREAT' fictional story unfold right-in-front of ones EYES!...on tv!
-Not even having to pick up a book , just by watching a screen and witnessing story after storyline, tale after tale of endless adventure, thrill and providing
some very much longed for & WORTHY...
(key -word)
>>'ENTERTAINMENT'<<
To hit our screens since GREAT shows like "The X-Files" were in existence...
That is...it is shows like, 'supernatural'... that are currently being watched on 'YOUR' network, "THE CW". SHOWS that are developing storylines, reeling in viewers from 'week-to-week' that hold the 'REAL'-'KEY' to making a successful TV network.
Supernatural hasn't recieved the same amount of advertising as such REALITY shows as,'America's Next Top Model'and 'The Search for the Next Doll', maybe if given equal representation, a fair chance ... NON-REALITY shows 'MIGHT ACTUALLY' produce viewing-figures they are much more worthy of, instead of leaving them behind, 'To bite the dust'...so to speak...and make MORE room for REALITY programming that ONLY takes away from the intrigue and 'special warmth'
-ONCE ONLY CREATED BY 'GREAT'- shows... since gone...now mourning that which only THEY could give us.
Please, I beg of you...ask youselves this:
Should Supernatural REALLY be the show to GO here?
thankyou.

Supernatural is the best show on television. It is quality programming at its finest. I am continually amazed at the amount of research that the writers must do before creating each episode. The cinematography and special effects are movie quality, which must be quite a feat given the limited production time for each episode. The entire cast and crew do a fantastic job. Supernatural is my only "must watch" show of every week. As for reality tv, I detest it and do not watch it. Partly because I don’t believe it’s real, and partly because I have no interest in what the “contestants” are doing.
Posted by: Becky | April 3, 2007 9:47 AM
The writing is definitely what makes Supernatural superior to anything else out there. I can always count on them to deliver humor, angst, and sometimes pure, delightful horror. They can satisfy your every need. As an added bonus, can the main characters get any hotter? I think not.

Well, Supernatural is my favorite show so far, i really love it, ghosts, demons, all the scary story and the relationship between the Winchesters as a family are totally amazing, well written, well acting, the best quality i've ever seen from a show.

I understand the stations need to integrate more reality shows--it's what is drawing in viewers in recent years. I don't attest to the addition of some reality shows, especially since I enjoy shows such as America's Next Top Model. But, as a devote fan, I MUST say...Supernatural is my absolute favorite show on our network. I think all of the comments on this page alone prove how in love Supernatural's fan-base is with the show. It has an intelligent plot and extremely talented cast. So many of the fans have stepped up their game and (like me) have been voting on every single online "Save One Show" polls and sending letters to station owners and leaving comments such as this one. It's apparent that people LOVE Supernatural as much as I do. I hope, I pray that you decide to keep Supernatural around for a third season.
It's just too good for it to go. =]

It is a sad commentary on the American culture that reality TV and soap operas saturate our three precious prime television viewing hours. Please, CW, I acknowledge (and empathize) that you are a young network and may still be in the process of establishing your "niche" in the television medium, and I don't know your ultimate target demograph; however, I know that "scripted" shows are the "classier" way to go.
It is my opinion that Supernatural is currently the best show on your network and, in general, on television (National Geographic, the History Channel and their likes don't count) today. (I do not need to reiterate my reasons this show is sublime - the testimonials of loyal fans that you have witnessed for yourself explain all.) I have watched Supernatural since its inception, at which time I was also interested in a handful of crime dramas on the other networks. Fast forward a year, and Supernatural is the ONLY show I HAVE to watch anymore. It would behoove any network to take a few pages from this unique gem of a series and formulate a more favorable reflection of our entertainment culture.

I've no patience for Reality Shows. Personally ,I feel "rooting" for a particular stranger as EXTREMELY weird stuff!LOL.Now, intelligently scripted series like my fav.Supernatural is something else...I feel respected as a viewer when the scriptwriters/producers SHOW PROOF that they're REALLY into entertaining us-and not taking us for granted with half-baked "plots" that's doomed from the pilot!!X-FILES was timely and had an excellent run. I feel the people behind Supernatural know they have a winner for the long run...So? INTELLIGENT/INTRIGUING scripted shows (even Westerns?) should be the challenge for producers ,not Reality shows for dummies.

I absolutely love Supernatural. I tune in every week! It’s the only show on t.v. that I just can’t miss. What can I say? It’s my favorite.
I’m thrilled that the CW airs a show as multi-faceted, original, and engrossing as Supernatural. Thank you!

Like many other posters before me have said, don't overload the CW with reality shows, they get old really fast and most make for mindless television. However, I do recognize that there is a need for them here at the CW, so just don't over do it (everything in moderation).
As for my favorite show, it would be Supernatural of course. Intense storylines, humor, drama, classic rock, bada$$ car, and two hot guys. What's not to love?

In all honesty, even though Top Model is my guilty pleasure, reality TV is a bit of a disgrace. It is not even real, as the editing twists the story to make it more appealing to the audience. The CW going reality-heavy would be a definite step toward an early death.
Reality TV gives the illusion of real life, while scripted television makes for a more enjoyable experience that does not try to pretend it is even in the realm of possibility at times. The only reason I turn into the CW at all is because of Supernatural, a high quality, sci-fi drama that has the potential to reach the popularity of Buffy or the X-Files, or to top that, if there was only more promotion and a better time slot. Of course, the fact that Supernatural holds its own in such a difficult time slot proves that it is worthy of returning, rather than being replaced by the shallow imitation of real life that is known as reality TV.

Supernatural is the show I care to watch on TV at all. I like having a show that I feel like I connect with ever week, one where I can care so much for the characters and take a jounrey with them week after week. I really don't understand how reality shows are so popular. It's so hard to find good TV these days.

I tune to the CW for Supernatural, my all-time favorite show. My husband forced me to watch the pilot with him after he read about it in our local paper. I was instantly hooked.
The storytelling is world class. The acting is the BEST. And the chemistry between Jensen and Jared blows me away.
The other thing that blows me away about this program is the loyalty of it's fanbase, but yet not enough promotion from the CW to match it's fanbase. It is holding it's own just fine against behemoths Grey's and CSI.
I am aware of how inexpensive (in comparison to scripted shows) that reality shows are to make. So if the CW needs to save $$ on them to keep Supernatural around, well then bring them on. I doubt I'll be watching them though.
In terms of user-generated content, I think it's fun to watch and is cool for contests, but would I watch a whole show about it? Probably not. It's funny in 5 minute segments.
In general, I find scripted shows much more enjoyable. Supernatural will "go down in history" for me as being a favorite of mine, NOT American Idol or Beauty and the Geek.

Reality television is quickly becoming more and more exasperating by the day. Sure, it can draw in a big viewership, but that is only because of the "find out who's eliminated next" factor that brings people in every week. I strongly say, SCRIPTED television is the way to go. And this is even coming from a person who was once addicted to one of the most watched reality shows on the CW: "America's Next Top Model."
As far as the CW goes, I would consider myself pretty well rounded as to which shows I watch (I usually try to watch something every night on the CW, minus Monday night just because I'm not all that big on the short comedy hours). And for years, I was hooked on America's Next Top Model.
That all changed however.
I was going through the immensely large world of YouTube searching through some videos when I came across a show called "Supernatural." It just so happened that it was the pilot episode and decided to give the show a shot, never having heard of it before. But after watching it, I quickly became hooked and immediately watched the entire first season in the same day!
But then I wondered what station this amazing show was on so I could watch some more of the recent episodes. I did some searching and found out that it was on the CW, the same network I had been watching non stop because of my addiction to ANTM.
A more puzzling question came into my mind though when I was thinking: "How come I have NEVER heard of this show when I watch the CW almost every day? You would have thought I would have seen a commercial or SOMETHING. I always see ANTM commercials, but never this show."
I decided to fix my new found addiction by buying the entire first season of Supernatural and joining the CW Lounge for Supernatural and found out what a large and obsessed fanbase Supernatural has.
So, restraining myself from getting too off topic here...let me just say the major point...
SUPERNATURAL is a truly amazing and brilliantly SCRIPTED show that beats ANY reality show out of the ballpark. Scripted shows shouldn't even be compared to reality shows, they are two totally and completely different things.
Scripted shows require days and days of hard work with their dedicated actors working over 16 hour days. Obviously this is going to cost more to budget than a reality show...but frankly, I would rather watch QUALITY scripted shows than a quickly put together cheap budget, brings in lots of viewers, reality shows.
SUPERNATURAL is one such quality show that is mesmerizing to watch because it is so adamant of how hard working the actors and crew are to put together one of the greatest shows on television.
So please, CW, keep the fantastic show of Supernatural on the air as long as possible because it is one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Scratch that. The best show I have ever seen in my LIFE. And I've only been watching it for 2 months now!
Reality television can make way for the hard working scripted shows that are completely deserving of being on the air. Reality fans will adjust if their show is gone, don't worry. I look back now and wonder WHY I was so fascinated in the first place to reality tv.
I now have a new obsession, and it includes the amazing duo of ghost hunters Dean and Sam Winchester "saving people, hunting things, the family business."

The very best show on TV right now is Supernatural. I could stand to see a whole lot more shows as well-written and entertaining. The concept is great, the actors intense and convincing, and the story line, both from week to week and over-all, is gripping. I hope I'm going to see Supernatural on my screen for years to come.

I think the choice to have Reality Television permeate the CW network instead of having scripted television shows would be a huge mistake!
It would be a band-aid to cover up what the real problems with the CW are.
Besides, a reality tv show might get more viewers for a little while, but what about in the long run? And what about creative integrity? These reality shows are a disgrace to art. They're nothing more than unscripted drama trash, with producers telling people what to do in the background. Then the editing is manipulated to make the people used appear as "characters."
But then again, maybe this is what people want to watch. Trash. It would make sense that the CW would become the queen of Reality TV. It's already on the route to becoming a network that lacks actual creative integrity.
The dramas on this network have all turned into soap operas since the move to the CW, and most of the shows have changed their format so as to gain more viewers, which by the way didn't really do anything. They advertise triangles instead of great story lines, and they ignore advertising characters that have large fan bases (IE: Chloe on Smallville), focusing on what it seems to be Dawn Ostroff's own ships.
So, should the CW switch to mostly Reality Television? If they do, I can guarantee it will be the beginning of the CW's demise (granted I think it already might have started with the choice to show "Runaway" instead of "Aquaman") Any average Joe could have told you that was a bad move.
My point is, Reality TV would be just a way to gain cheap viewers, but cheap viewers don't last long. There's no loyalty in the fan base.
I say come up with creative shows that no longer have the chauvinism that's been permeating on all of the CW shows this season, and make art. Hopefully, if there's a good word of mouth people will want to watch. But that includes having a good advertising campaign, which so far the CW sucks at.

I'm a UK viewer also and the show that I *always* tune into every week is Supernatural.
What's not to like? It's fresh, witty, scary, funny, sad and it boasts two very talented actors. Jensen and Jared are AMAZING and really bring Sam and Dean to life!
So instead of reality tv,I say BRING ON SUPERNATURAL!
Posted by: Mary | April 2, 2007 5:22 PM
As someone who lives in The U.K I am not well acquainted with The CW, that is apart from one programme of The CW's which I watch avidly each week on television here in The U.K. That programme is Supernatural. Supernatural is without a doubt the most original and best written show I have seen for a very long time. It is exciting, scary, funny and, at times, utterly heartbreaking. The brotherly relationship at the heart of the show makes for the most compelling drama and it is acted to perfection by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles.
Reality shows? They are a scourge on television in whichever country you live in. Why devote time and money to such programming when you have a gem like Supernatural already in the schedule and which has the potential, with continuing (and increasing) advertising and promotion, to go beyond the cult status it already enjoys to become absolutely massive.
Posted by: Daisy | April 2, 2007 5:07 PM
Supernatural is the reason I watch tv!! This show is so well written if feels like watching a movie each episode. Plus, the acting from Jensen and Jared is top notch, you won't find anything better. These two are super talented and need to be recognized as such. On the whole, you get scary, sexy, funny, sarcastic, exciting, angsty, happy, sad, dramatic...and many more, all rolled into one show. My opinion? AWESOME!!

I must confess, the only show I watch on the CW is Supernatural. I've never been a big fan of reality shows on any network however, I also realize that the network must be able to make a profit and reality shows are the all the craze.
I do think that if the network would promote Supernatural as much as their reality shows the ratings would increase, especially once people realize the clever writing, superb special effects and acting on the show.
Posted by: Sarecia | April 2, 2007 4:55 PM
For someone who does not live in the USA. Ratings wise, what happens to you affects everybody outside the US. We make up at least 20 million plus viewers. Do i have a solution no, but i have faith that Supernatural will have a 3 & 4 season. But the CW Network does need to promote this show. Spread the word every chance you get, coz" if it fails we suffer more where Supernatural is popular........

Game shows, sitcoms and "reality" (yeah RIGHT!) shows with their so called "broad market appeal" have flooded TV, and fried our brains these days. ENOUGH!
Enough crappy television! Enough prurient garbage that lauds greed, and venerates betrayal. Enough appealing to the lowest common denominator, enough programming "on the cheap". We should ALL be as mad as hell, and we shouldn't take it anymore!
In Supernatural we have a show with complex stories, engaging characters, and great special effects, which engages our minds and hearts.
There is some concern that Supernatural will NOT be picked up for a third season. This must not be allowed.
"The good shows often come few and far between... which is why we’ll settle for crap....Supernatural deserves a long life and... success..."1
"without a doubt, the best genre show...."1
"It’s one of the best sci-fi horror show on TV right now, and it is in fact one of the best sci-fi horror shows on TV in a very long time."2
"The plots are brilliant with twists that are fresh and perspectives that are real, not to mention characters that are always true to form and never flat or dull; indeed, they’re nothing short of fascinating and cooler than cool. It’s just plain off-the-charts rockin’!"2
"This show has what it takes to go for a good long haul, and it’s proven its powerful and enjoyable mettle from episode to episode. It’s deserving of all the attention established guests...can bring to the table, because this series runs on so much of its own merit and its casts’ and crews’ bests that they have a show worthy of attracting and intriguing those genre big shot guest stars in the first place."2
Now, when was the last time anyone saw reviews like THAT for a reality show??
Dawn Ostroff, and the CW's advertisers, take note please: advertise Supernatural,/b> more, and move it to a better slot. So, buck the trend, make a little history...
for the love of HEAVEN, NO MORE REALITY SHOWS!!!!

Supernatural for sure! It's the best CW show going AND way, way, WAY better than the ridiculousness of Grey's Anatomy! Give those of us who don't want soap operas in the night time something to sink our teeth into. I waited a long time for a show like this. Don't let it go!

In my opinion Supernatural is hands down the best show on the CW. If it was advertised even half as much as other CW shows such as America's Next Top Model and Search For The Next Doll I really believe that it could be as successful if not more than Buffy or the X-Files. It has everything you could want in a TV show, talent, good storylines, a balance between scary and humour, and more. If this show gets cancelled and shows like ANTM and Search For The Next Doll (which to me are both pure crap) get picked up for yet more seasons we will all know that the CW executives are out of their minds.

I definitely prefer scipted shows where the talents of the writers, crew and especially the actors can be optimized. When I sit down from a hard day after work I want to be entertained and taken away. That’s what I get when I watch Supernatural. The show had me hooked the first time I saw it. It first had me watching because I dared to be scared – and it worked! Then I quickly appreciated the show’s drama and humor as well. Where else can I find a show that let’s me follow such an amazing road trip, be afraid to turn out the lights, and laugh and cry all from the same episode? The Winchesters almost feels like part of my family because family is a strongpoint in the show and the drama is incredible. The brothers trials keep me coming back for more week after week. Hopefully the CW realizes the diamond that is in front of them.
I love the genre and there are not enough quality shows like this around. Every network can compete with another reality show but the numbers show that reality based shows are not where its at – well done scripted shows like Supernatural are what live on.

Supernatural is hands down the best show on the CW. It's got humor, mystery, horror, and brotherly love all in one show.
It has to come back for a Season 3. The Cw would be dead without it. Eric Kripke certainly knows what he's doing and his crew of writers and producers still keep surprising us and raising the bar.
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles do an amazing job at portraying Sam and Dean Winchester. Their off screen chemistry adds so much to their on screen relationship and is really the driving force of the show. It's what people want to see progress every week.
If Supernatural does not return for a 3rd season, the CW will be receiving thousands upon thousands not so friendly fan letters.

I feel the CW should make sure they keep a balance between the reality based shows and its other shows like Supernatural and Smallville. I am extremely hopeful of a renewal for Supernatural because it is definitely the show I watch week after week with my family, and later discuss with my friends. Supernatural is a well scripted show and I think that it is not only hitting its intended target audience but all other ages as well.
See, I’m not only looking out for what I like to watch but what I want my children to watch because I have a 6 year old and a ten year old. Watching Supernatural with my husband and my ten year old has become a family night tradition that we really enjoy. My son watches Smallville also, and I am grateful that there are these shows on the CW. We enjoy a show that takes away from reality a little while and lets our imaginations roam. We need more shows like these.
The reality based shows on the CW like the Pussycat Dolls, and America’s Next Top Model seem to be connecting with their target audiences, but I’m not sure another reality show is what the CW needs unless it is so different and reaches out to the people already watching the CW. Reality is so done already!
When I think of the CW I love the network and would love to see more advertising done and definitely more official promotional items created. I have looked for a t-shirt or calendar for my son for Supernatural and I don’t want to buy one that is not licensed. There are other products that I would buy for myself and my friends like the mugs, and also watches, notebooks, pens, just about anything. The items would help promote viewing and I’d definitely invest.
The advertising for Supernatural has been terrific and exciting AND I want to see more. I really enjoyed the Johnny Cash commercial and the “Free to Be” commercials. The “Free to Be” commercials are what drew me into watching Supernatural in the first place. More quality advertising such as that would be sure to boost ratings on Supernatural and other CW shows that aren’t getting enough promotion. More advertising in general on Billboards or on the radio would help. I live in the Philadelphia suburbs and look at all the signs on I-95 and would love to see something up there from the CW promoting my favorite show. The local CW-Philly sometimes advertises on the radio and any advertising is helpful. Even signs at the bus stops would be another way to start.
The contest for a Supernatural promotion by college students is a wonderfully creative contest that I was excited to hear about! I hope that the colleges have taken part in promoting that idea and talking about it to their students. More contests like that really get people talking about the shows.
I have a very strong feeling from what I hear about the fans of the show Supernatural, that this show could become the next Buffy or X-Files because these types of fans are extremely loyal. I’ve heard about the horror and science fiction conventions in my area and when my son wants to go because Supernatural or Smallville would be represented then we will attend.
I am extremely glad things are going well for the CW’s reality based shows but I hope that its fictional shows are not forgotten or pushed aside because they are what sets the CW apart. Young and old alike can appreciate the quality entertainment that shows such as Supernatural bring to television.

I think that the CW would be making a huge mistake going reality heavy. What happens when the reality-tv ship sails and they have nothing to air? Personally, I don't like reality tv.
Now, if they want quality programming, they need to stick with shows like Supernatural. This show has it all. Great stories, great characters, great writers and directors and last but surely not least...Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and the amazing Eric Kripke.
Not only does this show have the monster of the week but it also has a great underlying mytharc and a waonderful brother story. The brother dynamic and the portrayal of Sam and Dean Winchester by Jared and Jensen are what keeps me tuning in every week.
The CW would be crazy to get rid of this show in favor of reality-tv. Look at the ratings they pull in, 3 million plus from week to week and that's in the Timeslot of Death.
Supernatural is the best show on television and with a little heavier promotion, it could do even better in the ratings.
Does the CW even know what it has with this show?

I have a question. How can it be reality tv when it's not real? I mean, yah, who's really acting like themselves in these reality shows?
I only watch one show faithfully, Supernatural. It is the best show on tv. It's the only show on tv that's actually any good and not a clone of all the popular dr, cops, mob tv shows that are saturating the entertainment business. As for Reality Shows, I really don't like them and eventually , they too shall pass.

Let me first say THANK YOU to the CW for keeping Supernatural for their second season. Also THANK YOU for all of positive feedback I have heard from CW on the show, and inviting them to the forum this year. Thank you for also creating a great contest to promote the show. I would love to see MORE of that in the third season to attract more viewers. We as Supernatural fans want to help you succeed. A lot of the fans throw out AWESOME promotional ideas. Check out the forums!! I don't have to tell you how insanely loyal and AWESOME fans that support and promote the show are. All you have to do is see the CW message boards, the thousands of forums devoted to the show, and check out fanfiction.net sometime. There are over 7000 fan fictions devoted to this show, it's second only to buffy of ANY TV show on the website. The show obviously inspires people and stirs emotions in them. I am so excited to see what season 3 has in store for us.
I think everyone before me covered what makes the show so special. The writing, the acting, the directing, and most of all for me the chemistry of the actors that make Sam and Dean Winchester so much more than characters in a script and cookie cutter actors on a primetime TV show.
As for reality shows, I am not against reality shows that are done smartly and in good taste. I understand the budgetary attraction of doing reality shows. It is a hot trend in the network arena, and many times a big success.
Thank you for this opportunity to let you know we the fans are here to help you, and letting us remind you how important the show is to us!

Reality shows offer us, as viewers, a twisted sense of reality. This is the same with "scripted programing". The only difference is that programs such as Supernatural, One Tree Hill, and Smallville all do not pretend to be part of the real world. Reality shows do. In my opinion, they lack a certain respect that the storytelling of other shows have. As much as I shamelessly enjoy America's Next Top Model and Beauty and the Geek, if it came down to picking between those two and Supernatural and Smallville, I would pick the latter. Both of those shows are the reason Thursday is my favorite day of the week.
Posted by: Wench | April 2, 2007 1:27 PM
To be honest, the only show I watch is Supernatural. I used to watch Smallville but stopped after Season 5..lost it's appeal..could only take so much of Lana Lang..but Supernatural is by far the most intelligent show on the network with the most talented cast and crew. Reality tv..I never understood it...I have never seen a reality tv show an minute of my time..but to each his own. I hope the CW sticks with more scripted tv...and I'm not sure they will ever find a show that will come close to Supernatural..but they should keep trying.

Personally, I have never been a fan of reality television. I find it is extremely unrealistic, and therefore have never tuned in. However, I know that many people enjoy these programs immensely and as such, it would be wise for the CW to take those ratings into consideration.
When it comes right down to it, though, I tune in for Supernatural. It is my favourite television program, bar none. It has everything I love in a show. It's clever, humourous, a real edge-of-your-seat thriller, and still manages to get right down to the gritty roots of human relationships. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki step up their game with each episode, and they portray the brothers and their relationship beautifully. The writers and producers dream up creative storylines that keep the fans chomping at the bit for more, and I honestly don't know how I would cope if this amazing show was cancelled. It's literally the only reason I watch TV at all these days!

Well, as someone who lives in the UK, I have no particular loyalty to the CW! However, as an absolute, total obsessive about one show, I have a vested interest in the CW doing well. What show? Well Supernatural of course! What other show has it all? I really don't believe the CW realises what a superb programme they have on their hands. It is beautifully written, deep, intense, funny, sad. It has action, horror, drama and really everything I could ever want in a show. None of which could be achieved without the frankly, astonishing talents of both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. They were good in Season 1 but Season 2 has seen them reach new heights, really not seen in other shows. The CW should put everything behind this show - it has the potential to reach the same cult status and critical acclaim as The X Files - I can give it no higher praise!

Supernatural is my favorite show and it will return for a 3rd season. With a great cast, and crew, this show is one of the best out there IMO.

I wish Reality TV would be retired by all networks.
AI, ANTM, Survivor, Bachelor, etc: each reality program has different people repeating the same "game", over and over. Dull, boring, tired.
Where's the originality and creativity?
At this time the CW airs the most creatively put together program on TV: Supernatural. Does the CW even realize the gem they have? Due to the lack of promotions, obviously not. SN appeals to a wide demographic. There's a little something for everyone: action, suspense, drama, comedy, chills/thrills, family ties. It's well scripted, well acted and takes me on an emotional journey.
SN is the perfect example of the type of programming that the CW needs: fresh & creative
Without SN, I wouldn't even know what other programs are aired on the CW. From time to time I tune into OTH & SV.
Other programs I tune into, Prison Break, Two & a Half Men & Desperate Housewives. I dropped Grey's Anatomy because I'm addicted to SN. The CW can air SN any day, anytime: I will gladly drop any other program to tune in.

The CW does not need more reality tv shows! It needs more awesome shows like Supernatural.
Supernatural is THE best show on TV on ANY station. In fact it's the ONLY show I watch on a regular basis. I always make sure I have nothing planned for my Thursday night with the Winchester Brothers!
Now if you could get some more shows that have everything the way this show does I'd spend more time watching!

I LOVE Smallville and Supernatural. I've been a Smallville fan for years, and Supernatural has such great writing and a great chemistry between Jensen and Jared. These are the types of shows I want to see!
I am not a fan of Reality TV. They are entertaining for an occasional watch, but the only shows I follow consistently are scripted ones. If you want to build a fan base, I think Scripted TV is the way to go.

Hi, i just wanted to tell you of waht supernatural has done to my life, everyday that isnt thursday, i wake up and say, im one day closer to supernatural, it has been a show about brotherly love and also some bad ass music and ass kicking that appeals to a wide demographic, it has comedy, and drama, brotherly love, and the non mushy stuff. its something that i look forward to all week, just to sit down and watch it every thursday night. people have noticed my free spirited adn happy moods when thursday comes around. and i crave it all the time. if you were to take this show away from me, that would be like taking a child away from its mother. i would probably not watch the CW anymore, thats for sure, and the light spirited glorious katie that people get to see on thursdays would be gone. please renew this show, i would be eternally grateful and forever indebted to the CW. thats just me putting in my two sence.

I abhor Reality TV. I never watch it. I watch the CW for only one show ... Supernatural. It it doesn't come back for another season I won't be watching this network at all.
I say this in earnest because this show touches the emotional core of what it is to be a family. The two brothers only have each other, so that makes them fight extremely hard to protect each other. I find this deeply moving and even tune in for re-runs.
Posted by: jade_kadir | April 1, 2007 8:36 PM
Although personally I tune in for the scripted shows (yeah, another devoted Supernatural fan here ^^) I think the CW, like any network, needs a range of different products for different timeslots and audiences. You wouldn't show a scripted drama with adult and horror themes (like Supernatural for example) in a tea time slot when kids might be watching, but you might want to show Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll then (I know my 12 year old loves it!).
However, I do feel the reality genre is getting a bit old, as if we've seen it all before. Innovative reality shows seem to be thin on the ground, which is reasonable when you think about it: there are only so many ideas.
The CW should look at all their output, figure out what they do best, see what's getting the most interest, then find ways to keep doing those things and more of them. There's no reason that the good quality scripted shows and reality-based shows can't continue to happily co-exist - just up the quality! (And fund the marketing department... I keep telling my friends to watch Supernatural and they haven't heard of it! Criminal... *g*)

Although reality shows are cheaper to produce they don't give the network any credibility or offer much oprutunity for reruns, sydication or DVD sales.
I think the furture of the network lies in it's scripted dramas. Shows like Supernatural and Veronica Mars already have a devoted fanbase and have brought critical acclaim to the network.

I HATE REALITY TV. I want shows that have a story and interesting characters. SUPERNATURAL is a show like that. It takes a lot for me to even watch tv because everything on is reality-based junk. In fact the only show I watch is Supernatural, if it goes off the air I won't be watching anything. Supernatural should be renewed for many seasons. Get rid of the shows past their prime like 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls. To sum up KEEP SUPERNATURAL ON!

I personally tune in every week for Supernatural, and I really think that unique, plot-driven shows like it, Smallville, Gilmore Girls, and the like are your bread and butter. I know that reality TV is popular right now, and there's countless ideas to draw from, but it seems to me like it's a quick, short-lived commodity, and so in the end, a lot of money is put into something that's not going to last; Top Model has been a noted exception. I'm really pulling for Supernatural to get renewed for next season, and honestly, I'll do whatever I can to support the CW in order to shows like this continue to be given a chance, and I know there are others who feel the same. Let us know how we can help!

I'm mystified by the popularity of Reality TV. Stick with shows like Supernatural - great acting, quality writing, impressive direction - it's shows like this that will keep the CW from developing a reputation for trash TV.

23years old female from N.L., México, just for the record.
When I watch television, I like watching shows that make me think, if there's nothing of that kind available at the time, I just turn to the closest Discovery Channel type of channel available. While I've watched my fair bit of reality television, it's a genre that was interesting only when it began and wasn't all over the place. Pretty much all of those shows follow the same line: "bunch of people who want to be famous/want money >> they are all living together >> challenge >> someone is eliminated >> they cry" repeat until someone wins... At first it was interesting to see how people reacted on those kind of situations, but it's gotten old with the time. This kind of shows do not want us to think, which is something people this days need; we are just expected to sit in front of the tv, laugh or cry depending or the situation, and when the show ends, turn off the tv and go on without having something stay with us.
Maybe I'm in a minority, but curiosity is very important nowadays, there's a great feeling on watching a show and, when it ends, stay at the tv for a couple of minutes thinking about what just happened; then comes a need to run to the nearest internet-enabled computer and start investigating on something new that appeared on the show. After a couple of searches, you end up learning something new. Now THAT'S what we need, to learn something everyday; not to be mindless beings.
While reality television might be good in the short run, I don't think there are a lot of people that, after watching a show like America's Next Top Model, will like to run and buy the previous seasons. With shows like Supernatural, Veronica Mars and Smallville, there's that "something" that makes you want to buy previous seasons; that may be because scripted shows are made with far more relatable characters, and they are basically the same over the seasons. In reality tv, every season it's different people but in the same old situations, there's really not time to care about them, while in scripted show, one grows to love the characters.
I may watch several shows religiously, but only a few of them make me want to tell people about them. Supernatural is one of those shows. I started watching a couple episodes before the first season ended, and started becausewhile I'm a scaredy cat, I love everything, paranormal/supernatural. It was the name that attracted, me. After watching an episode, I liked Sam, but more important, I liked the plot. The next episode, Dean became interesting, and I was hooked. In only two episodes! Usually it takes an entire season to accomplish that! Then I became a fan, I leave everything aside to watch the show (and the rerun xD) and care about the characters like never before. And yes, i'm saving to buy the first season. Yesterday i saw it on rent, and my mother suggested that I rented it, watched it and leave it like that, my response? "I can't! I HAVE" to buy it!" It's not an I've watched it I've forgot about it thing, it became part of me.
Also? The fanbase is the greatest one I've ever been so involved into.

I'd ask you at CW first of all to please recognize the great boon you have in the fan-bases of your scripted shows.
In particular (and under the circumstances, I don't think this can be stressed enough), please note Supernatural, a show which has suffered an appalling lack of promotion- and yet has a following of rabid and obsessive fans (I use these terms with the utmost affection and respect, you understand, being one myself), as great in their devotion to the show as the x-Philes and Buffy fans before them. This show should be seeing far more air time than it is currently- both with repeat time-slots and advertising features, because (as has been said before) a show of this quality, with this draw, could do for CW what the x-files did for Fox.
I am a great advocate of scripted-ness in general though. Although Smallville runs a little bit juvenile for my tastes, I still can't stop watching it simply on the merit of it being a super-hero show, with a reasonably high quotient of explosions per episode and a suitably twisted conspiracy-arc. The writing and acting don't measure up to Supernatural (or even Veronica Mars, I'm told) but such things as explosions can still carry a show, apparently...
