Hidden Palms Premiere: What'd You Think?
Welcome to Palm Springs – home of too much heat, too much sun, too much money, and too many secrets. Looks like we’re in for a wild ride this summer!
So, what did you think? Poor Johnny – not only did his dad kill himself (right in front of him!) because his mom was having an adulterous affair with said dad’s best friend and business partner, the kid has to deal with mom marrying the guy she was sleeping with and getting schlepped off to the desert in the middle of summer. It’s enough to turn anyone to drink. Lucky for him, his AA meetings feature a quirky, diminutive drag queen whose alcoholic confessions come off like stand-up. Not bad – we’re wishing we could add a quirky, diminutive drag queen to every show on the network.
The rest of the neighbors… well, they’re going to keep things interesting. Cliff is just the sort of amiable sociopath to keep Johnny on his toes. We kind of wish they’d gone a slightly subtler route with his character, however – wouldn’t it have been cooler if we spent the whole time wondering whether Cliff was who he seemed to be? But by the time he started punting small fuzzy house pets, he was telegraphing eeeeeevil to the extent that we expected him to start twirling his mustache and tying damsels to the train tracks while cackling gleefully.
Speaking of damsels… what did you think of Greta? Johnny, obviously, is smitten, but what about you? We’re intrigued, but worried that she’s going to be the next in a long, long line of troubled wild-child party girls hiding her pain from the world. We kind of prefer Liza – but then, what’s not to like about a chick who dressed in protective gear and makes stuff explode?
On to the adults. We’re ready to bestow the World’s Worst Dad award on Johnny’s suicidal pop – seriously, why the heck would he shoot himself right in front of his son? Granted, he knew he wouldn’t be around to pick up the pieces, but if you’re going to traumatize your kid by killing yourself, at least have the good grace to do it in an out-of-the-way place, not right in front of the kid. Sheesh. Don’t they address that in parenting manuals?
Of course, none of the parents on this show are looking particularly spiffy – self-absorbed plastic-surgery junkie, adulterous wife who married her dead husband’s best friend, completely absent… heck, the most normal parents are the ones who let their kid blow things up in the garage. Maybe all that sun bakes parental brains?
So what did you think? Do you like the air-of-menace vibe, or would you be happier with a straight-up teen soap? Who’s your favorite character? Just how evil is Cliff? Will Johnny be able to hold on to his sobriety – or even his life? What are all the secrets floating around out there in the desert? Let us know what you think in the comments!

I don't want this show to be cancelled! I think it will start to pick up a lot in the next few episodes and the CW is going to regret if they cancel it. I love Johnny! <3

this show is amazing. i really hope it doesn't get cancelled. that would be stupid. it has this factor that makes you want to keep coming back for more.
i can't wait till the next episode.
this very well may be the next BIG teen drama.

awsomeee... i lovv the show..what else can i say..., i hope it will continue after the 8 episodes
Posted by: Claudia | June 9, 2007 10:31 AM
okay yea i saw the first episode and it was okay...too many unanswered questions were asked pretty dumb if you ask me! second thing i wanted to watch the second show but missed the air date so i think u guys should get with the program and have full episodes on the web okay?? but otherwise i guess it an okay show...for now but still back to the full episodes on the web besides that its the only reason i dont watch CW is cuz if i miss a show im to lazy to record it and so then i have NO idea whats going on cuz HP kinda skips around trying to get viewers to see the different sides of evryone to fast!!! THE END
Posted by: Beautyful | June 9, 2007 1:57 AM
omg i love this show! i'm like addicted now. i had to go to a baseball game during the second game but i made sure i recorded it!!
Posted by: kt | June 7, 2007 11:45 AM
i hate this show. today is what, the second episode? and it STILL sucks. and you know what CW sucks for even having this show. I miss the old shows. Like 7th heaven, or GG or VM. Those shows rock!
Posted by: jenny | June 6, 2007 10:56 PM
The main reason I watched this show is because it reminded me of The OC. We all knew once they killed Marissa, it was a done deal.
This show didn't pull through as I hoped it would but I have to admit, dad killing himself in the first 5 minutes got me interested.
I think it will pick up. I do agree it's a little predictable but...let's give it a chance. It just might be something.
At least these networks are realizing how hard it is to channel surf all summer.
Posted by: Shamese | June 6, 2007 9:09 PM
Underrated? Hidden Palms? "justeen", please don't make me vomit. More like overrated. How is a program this terribly acted and written be underrated? Each scene was predicable.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 6, 2007 4:42 PM
The show was questionable for me.. The first episode didn't really do a whole lot to spark my interest.. that's not to say that I wont tune in again to see if it picks up speed and gets more interesting but come on folks.. this will never by any means compare to GG.. could you not have continued GG and VM and just done without HP entirely?? Or instead of potentially cancelling OTH after season 5 continue it and not replace it with something that clearly wont be as good?
Posted by: Allison | June 6, 2007 10:40 AM
lovee this show please don't ever cancel it, it's good but so far underated, give it time it will have a fanbase like OTH it has alot of potential and i hope cw keeps that in mind.
Posted by: justeen | June 6, 2007 1:27 AM
this is jst another bad show about the boring unrealistic lives of stupid attractive teenagers. i hope it doesnt last, its jst taking away a slot that another meaningful show could fill.
Posted by: carla | June 5, 2007 8:45 PM
hate the show.... sucks big time.... want VM back....
Posted by: tiff | June 5, 2007 6:02 PM
I think that the premiere of the new show hidden palms was alright but it was a twist of my fave shows one tree hill and a little of veronica mars but I think that this episode kinda was cool in a sense that johnny was a kind of person that was smart and cool and outspoken and wants to express his feelings then greta comes and shows him an awesome time at the golf course without even saying her name. but she seems to be logical and awesome I love her.
Posted by: candyce | June 5, 2007 1:09 PM
i really liked the show! i am deffinetly adding it to my list of shows to watch!!
Posted by: becca | June 5, 2007 10:58 AM
This was a good show. Then again, it seems this show is more geared to the OC and One Tree Hill fans. I personally wasnt a fan of either, but I would like to see the the season continue for at least 3-4 seasons. I'll keep watching.

Stupid show with bad actors. And this Johnny guy is so ugly. I hate it.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 4, 2007 7:11 PM
Its going to get better and the cast is amazing Johnny is so HOT!
Posted by: Anonymous | June 4, 2007 5:13 PM
OMG! johnny is HOTT=]
ii lovee Hidden Palms;]
ii hatee greta tho=[
ii hopee it stays on the CW=]

CheJoh: good writing and talented actors make for good tv, not good-looking actors.
Now that I've seen it and regardless of the puppy kicking incident: Hidden Palms in my book is...meh...
Didn't caputure enough interest in me to tune in again.

Ok..when I first started watching the show I was blank..but as soon as the father shot himself in the head I was wigging out! It got really interesting after that. Johnny is very handsome which makes for good television..it seems like every character is screwed up in their own special way..lol. As for Cliff kicking the dog..it was brilliant(not the dog abuse) I have two yorkies myself and I love them dearly but kicking the dog wasnt endorsing animal cruelty! It was showing the type of person Cliff truly was...sweet but deciteful. The dog kick wasnt real..get over it. I hope it lasts..so far it seems really good. Just like Tree Hill people will be skeptical at first..but it'll grow on you and you'll want to know who did what to who and when the sh*t hits the fan..who's gonna get sprayed. It's a keeper...trust me people will fall in love with it..I know I did.

Totally luv the show. I can't w8 4 next episodes! That's kind of weird though but definitely a very good weird! Hope I won't b disappointed. I mean, hopefully the show won't b canceled! C'mon the CW, u start something, u finish it, right? Count on u.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
What a snooze fest.
Badly written, predicable dialoge, events and plot. Kevin Williamson did not hit the mark with this one. (Then again, I've heard the original script was darker but he had to make it "CW Friendly")
Not well acted either. The female lead being the worst.
Farewell Hidden Palms.

i cann tell it would be on my top

I was intrigued at first, but totally OUTRAGED at the scripted animal abuse shown towards the pug! This is animal cruelty, which is a crimial act and has no business being played out as heartless entertainment. I'm going to encourage other friends to boycott your show!! SHAME ON YOU, CW11! I used to enjoy your programing, but that's ruined!

Didn't like the show....
Posted by: jen | June 3, 2007 5:52 PM
Taylor Handley is so much hotter in real life than he is being portrayed in the show! He needs to channel that Oliver Trask hottness we all love!
Posted by: ashley | June 3, 2007 1:20 PM
For me the show is questionable. It has potential and cause it is one of the only things on in the summer it should do good. bUT, i hope its not like the OCand if it is take a hint the OC was cancelled. I'll tune in next week for sure. bUT, IT WONT TAKE THE PLACE OF gLimore girls or Veronica Mars. Hope it tunes out 2 be the best show next to One Tree HiLL

Just wondering.

I really luv tha show, it's a big hit with me!!!
Posted by: Gawaan Doutherd | June 1, 2007 9:40 AM
Callie,
I hear what you're saying about the promos, but the CW couldn't even get a quarter of their current viewers to tune in to the premier. Didn't come close to it.
Doesn't look good for the fate of this network.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 1, 2007 8:31 AM
i didn't like it.... it just jumps to different parts to fast and to much....... didn't have a good story line.......
Posted by: Anonymous | May 31, 2007 10:34 PM
I LOVED IT && I CANT WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT ONE COMES.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 31, 2007 10:05 PM
AWESOMEE!! this show was sick! not to mention it has 2 actors from the oc <33. it was sickk!!
Posted by: emily | May 31, 2007 9:04 PM
I loved Hidden Palms, just like I loved it when I first saw the pilot a couple months back!
Still, I'm not surprised it did as poorly as it did in the ratings. I mean...when's the CW going to learn that if you don't promote your shows with aggressive campagins beyond just showing commercials during other CW shows, they won't get viewers?
Posted by: Callie | May 31, 2007 8:16 PM
this show is okay i guess.
i didnt think i was going to like it, but after i whached the first episode i liked it. i mean its not my favorite show or anything [friday night smackdown is my absolute favorite] but hidden palms is pretty cool.

HP isn't like the OC and never will be! It's just a stupid copy with bad actors:( I hate it!
Posted by: Anonymous | May 31, 2007 6:28 PM
I LOVED THE SHOW!!! when i first heard that two OC alums were going to be on it, i was a bit skeptical that it would just be an OC wannabe, but i actually love the way the show is set up and i absolutely can't wait to continue watching it!!!! props to the CW for having the newest cool show!!! :]

Sorry, it was dreck. Not gonna' replace Gilmore Girls or Veronica Mars or anything remotely decent.
From rich (the O.C.) to richer (Palm Springs). What made GG and VM so good was that most of the people on those shows were normal (ok, perhaps not completely) people, not the ultra-rich with palatial mansions on golf courses.
Feh.

I actually enjoyed it. It was cute, quirky, dark in a good way. Except for the last couple of minutes where we were 'treated' to a weepy emo pop ballad in it's melodramatic entirety, I was satisfied. It's not a great show, but it's got potential and will fill the summer months nicely.
