Supernatural: One Story Ends, Another Begins
This was a bit of a controversial season finale here at CW Source Central. Some of us thought it was awesome, perfect, exactly what the doctor ordered. Others were disappointed -- there was none of the jaw-dropping surprise that hit us last year, no semi-creaming-the-Metallicar moment. They wanted something more. What did you think?
One thing we all agreed on – good Lord, everyone involved in the show can act rings around most other people on TV. Dean’s monologue to Sam’s chalk-white corpse? Oof. That still stings. Bobby taking Dean outside and tearing him a new one for making a deal? Absolutely perfect. Sam’s steely resolve as he shot Jake, the look on his face as he pulled the trigger again and again? Chilling. And that last scene, the boys by the Metallicar, contemplating the demon mop-up they have to look forward to? We cheered. The Winchesters will be hitting the road, and taking down demons again. What’s not to love?
And oh, we were so glad to see the Yellow-Eyed Demon chomp his way through all the scenery he had access to. He’s such a snarky little schmuck, and so gleeful when he’s warping minds and corrupting souls. We were almost – almost – sorry to see him go. Will you miss him? But that moment when John clawed his way out of hell and grabbed the demon, giving Dean the opportunity to grab the Colt and take a shot? We cheered. Oh, boys… we’re so glad that particular chapter is over for you.
Plus, Ellen’s alive – hooray! She’s always been our favorite of the roadhouse crew, and we would have been seriously bummed if she’d perished in the flames. How fabulous was her turn at the bar with Bobby? Yes, we loved that Bobby made her slam a shot of holy water before he’d trust her, but we loved her request for whiskey even more. You just can’t keep a tough broad like Ellen down. Which is why we were seriously freaked when Jake made her turn the gun on herself – we’ve seen far too many of the characters we love die in the last couple of episodes.
And then there’s John. Ah, John, it was good to see you again – but what, did you have laryngitis? Could they not pay you enough to actually speak a few lines? Or did demons take out your tongue while you were roasting in hell? Most of us are happy you seemed to go to a better place after you were done helping the boys – although the die-hard John antagonists are still harrumphing a bit that he got off easy. Ah, well, you can’t please everyone.
Speaking of which -- here’s where we start arguing: What do you think of Dean making a deal with the Crossroads Demon to bring Sam back? We all agree it was in character for Dean -- he’d do absolutely anything for his brother, including things he’d condemned other people for doing. But some of us are disappointed that the writers let him go through with it. There was a moment, when the Crossroads Demon was walking away, that we thought she wasn’t actually gong to let Dean go through with it -- that he’d try what he always did, sacrificing himself, giving up everything, and that now, finally, it wouldn’t work. Then he’d have to realize (1) maybe self-sacrifice wasn’t all he was good for, and (2) there are other ways to save people than to give up himself. Some of us think the writers missed an opportunity, that they took a predictable route. Others think that assessment was too harsh – what else could Dean do? Sam’s corpse was probably starting to get a little stinky, and Dean needed to do something right now. He did what it took, and he had to, because his family was his whole world. With Sam gone, he had nothing left.
But whichever side we came down on, we all have to admit we’re thrilled with the direction the show seems to be going in for season three. The boys will be hitting the road again, trying to round up the hundreds of demons who escaped from hell. Plus, Sam will be trying to figure out how to save Dean form his deal – and we’re not sure Dean is going to want to be saved. That should lead to some rather delicious tension between the boys.
So what did you think? Were you cheering every time Bobby opened his mouth – or even shot Dean a withering stare? Did you applaud the return of Ellen? Will you sort of miss the Yellow-Eyed Demon? Do you think Sam came back different, wrong… evil? Was his relish at killing Jake a sign of his descent into wrongness, or understandable, considering Jake killed him first? And what are you going to do all summer without new Supernatural episodes to look forward to every Thursday?
Actually, we can help a bit with that last one – we’ll be keeping up our Supernatural features until new episodes return. We’ll have fan art recommendations, quizzes, games, behind-the-scenes stories and all sorts of other goodness to get your through. Remember, share your fan art recommendations and anything else with us at cwsource@gmail.com, and keep coming back over the summer for more Supernatural joy!

Supernatural is the best show ever to run on TV (this is my opinion of course). Thank you CW11. Jensen Ackles (Dean) is sooo hot! That man drives me wild! I would do almost anything to meet him....As for the season finale, I think it was absolutely fantastic, just like every other episode for the past two years. I just hope that after season three there will be more Dean and Sam to watch! Keep on rockin' Supernatural...

So how'd you people liked the Season Finale? I thought it was fantastic! Whats going to happen to hotboy Dean? (Please don't answer that. I just want to say that as much as I don't believe in the Supernatural (like it matters) but this is the first "supernatural" show that I like next to Charmed. I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!

It will always be a great
show but without Jeffrey
Dean Morgan, I can't see just
the two of them hanging on.
Morgan was supposed to be in
the last 3 episodes. What
happened I don't know. I
waited all year for that. Even Jensen says when Jeffrey
is on the show it brings their acting to a higher level. I won't be waiting
with high hopes like last
year.

let's see... i yelled at the tv when dean made the deal, cheered at the tv when sam came back, gasped at the tv when sam shot jake (over and over and over...) and bit my nails at the tv when ellen had the gun to her head. i'm so glad ellen and sam aren't dead! i'm still bummed about ash, though. he was an f-ing genius! and yes, it was shocking that sam shot jake so easily (and that face? down right scary). but i do think he had justification, seeing as jake killed him first. all in all, i thought it was an amazing episode.

In all honesty? My inital impression is that was a bit of an anti-climax. I suppose I was amongst those expecting a horrific cliffhanger (especially after last year's) and I had geared myself up for that. I really didn't expect resolution of the shows Biggest Issues (TM) - although with a brand new one to spice up the mix. Honestly, I thought the killing of the Yellow-Eyed Demon and John's return were a little too "pat" (to the point where almost had a cliché feel to them)
And I really had been looking forward to seeing John again, but the appearance was brief and did seem almost tokenistic. Like it was there because it was on the to do list, but there wasn't any real substance to it. And the music was hideously schmaltzy. It was like they were trying too hard all round. Disappointed? Yeah. It's true, you know. You really should be careful what you wish for.
To be honest, killing the demon? Despite all the rigmarole, didn't seem as momentous as it should. And actually, the "that's for our mom" actually made me cringe a little. I felt sorry for Jensen Ackles having to say that line. He did his best (which is considerable), but even he couldn't save that line. It was an absolute clanger.
Dean's deal (hey, that actually looks cute written out like that) was the only thing that shook me. I saw it coming from the moment the "Crossroad Blues" flashbacks appeared in the opening sequence. (And that's another thing. "Wayward Son" again. I thought it was wonderful the first time, but this time it felt repetitive. Coz, like it was) The deal was the sort of thing I can see Dean doing, but it still hurt to watch him do it.
Having spent quite a bit of time during the past week defending Dean's wounded soul as not making him a total victim, it was a little painful to watch. I still don't think his self-sacrificing makes him pathetic. The insinuation that you have to be selfish to be strong or for your life to have meaning seems to be quite prevalent in the modern world. And I still reject that and refuse to see Dean's choice to not make himself his first priority as a weakness. But some parts of the ep did make me feel distinctly uncomfortable.
And they hugged again. *eyeroll* That should make the fangirls happy. I've always thought that the fact that you could tell just how close Dean and Sam were even though they didn't hug really proved how clearly strong the bond between them was. Hugging is obvious. Footballers hug when they score a goal. What Dean and Sam share is so much better than that. Hugging doesn't add to it IMHO.
I don't mind the hug in itself because it was an appropriate situation. I just hope that it's not indicative of trend to have them hugging every episode because that's what the fans have been calling for all the time - more hugging, hug him now, oh GOD when are they gonna hug? They've hugged now. Let's cross that off the to do list. (Yes, that line of Dean's seems to be embedded in my brain). And I really hope the cart (ie the fandom) hasn't started driving the horse in this show. I've already started getting twitchy about that issue with another of my favourite shows. Not this one too! Please, no. Less is more. Understated is better than Anvil City. Subtext is its own reward (and I do mean all subtext, not just the sexual variety). And for Christ's sake, show! Don't tell!
But what I did like... Sam's finding out about the deal and his determination that it's his turn to save his brother. It's "Faith" all over again and a year to play it out with.
Hey, one year? Would that coincide with next season's finale episode? No! You don't say!
What else did I like? Nice action shots! I loved, loved, LOVED that shot of Dean's acrobatic vault and tumble over the gravestone! Thank God, Ellen didn't turn out to be possessed or Hell's minion all along. Bobby's concern for Dean, especially in the junkyard.
And best of all? Well, I'm weird and Never-Say-Die Dean is my favourite manifestation. Angst? Sure. Hurt (for the purpose of comfort)? Yes, please! That strange inability to see his own incredible goodness? Oh, I love it so, so much (and I find it incredibly admirable and not to be pitied at all) But the unstoppable determination and positive thinking in the face of all adversity is still my ultimate squee-factor when it comes to this boy!
So my favourite thing about the episode was actually the fact with a one year countdown on his soul and a war against hundreds of unleashed hellspawn to face, Dean is still wearing that familiar cocky and apparently genuine grin at the end.
Hell, he's not dead yet! And he and his brother still have a job to do.
Y'know, I actually cheered myself up the first time I wrote all this out (it's largely quoted from my LiveJournal). Still a sense of anti-climax, but happier overall. And when I rewatched the episode again, I found it does get better on repeated viewing. Still some truly cringe-worthy dialogue and the "soulful" background music doesn't help at times. But the good bits are exceedingly good. I'm gonna revel in those.
See, Dean is my hero! Positive thinking in the face of all adversity.

Actually "WOW" was my reaction to the fans whom have such a disliking to this episode.
AHBL was entertaining, emotional, fulfilling and a great way to finalize the first two seasons while opening a new door to continue the journey of Sam and Dean.

OMG!!!!! i thought that Sammy was going to die and that they werent gonna bring him back to life. But i also had a feeling that Dean would make a deal with the main demon person but i am so happy that he atleast lived to see antoher day and kill that evillllllll bastard what eva his name was. But anyways love the show and everything about it even the brothers they are soooooooooo HOT!!!!!!! oh yeah and i was going to send a mean letter to the director if they didnt bring him back to life because there is no show with out the two HOT brothers, they fight together. Looks like some of us are going to have to agree to disagree on this.
I found no problems with the dialogue or action. This finale wasn't meant to be action based anyway.
The bullet: maybe the demon was keeping it for a reason. To kill another demon? Maybe the gun had to have a bullet in its chamber in order to open the gate? Or for a pure cockyness type of anticlimatic fun- maybe he wanted to kill Dean using the colt. Who knows? (I'm going to watch it again to see if there are any clues to the demon keeping it)
Some of those who are disappointed are making this episode out to be worse than Bugs and No Exit combined. no offense, but you're overreacting.

Oh Please! The season finale was not Wow! The finale was not well written, I watched with a group of people and we all agreed that it was horrible. The dialogue was not as smooth flowing as other episodes, the action sequences were not simply amazing like in nightshifter. Come on the YED keeps a bullet in the gun that he knows will kill him? He only needed the gun to open the door.

SEASON 2 ON DVD
WILL BE AVAILABLE
SEPTEMBER 11.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 24, 2007 3:31 PM
Badly written? What?
It was amazing. The characterization, dialogue, scenario. YED arc was finalized, but also continues in a sense because the YED let 200 demons escape from hell.
Bobby trying to get Dean to bury Sam. Dean losing it and taking his emotions out on Bobby. Dean not caring if the world ends because he feels he has nothing to live for (we all know Dean doesn't see his self worth). Bobby leaves but lets Dean know he's still there for him.
the deal: sure it was predictable, but I have to go with Kelsy on this one. It was a classic Dean move. His desperation to "save" and "not let down" Sam was wonderfully scripted and acted.
Sam waking in the hotel room, dreary and confused. Even more so, when Dean hugs him. (Think about something Dean said in a S1 episode "we're not going to have to hug are we?") Of course Sam would think Dean was acting odd. Sam doesn't think the situation was serious for Dean to hug him, so he brushes it off and wants to continue: Jake and YED. Dean wants to take in the moment and thought that he still has some more time with his brother. He doesn't want Sam to do anything that will get him killed again when he just got him back. Both Sam and Dean were in perfect characterization and the dialogue fit the situation.
They go to see Bobby, who's expression was priceless. He realizes what Dean has done and lays into him outside. The dialogue between the two was fabulous. Bobby commenting on how Winchesters are so willing to sacrifice themselves but don't think about what it will do to the person they are sacrificing themselves for. He questions Dean on the low opinion he has of himself. Dean gets Bobby to understand that he could not fail Sam. Remember, Dean's mission was to "save" Sam.
Ellen: Shows up shaken and scared. Bobby and Dean think she may be possessed because of the destruction of the roadhouse. She's not, they talk, she went out for pretzels and when she got back the roadhouse was aflame. Plausible - practical, its a roadhouse. She's alive and brought a map she had in a safe (Ash's work). Colt had protected the gate to hell - railroad tracks into the shape of a pentagram - cemetery in the center. Sam figures out why the Demon was looking for only one soldier. The YED obviously could not enter the pentagram, but a human could. A human, that could fight off people who would inevitably try to stop him from opening the gate.
The gate: the colt was the key not just a gun that could kill anything supernatural.
At the gate: Jake has been practicing his abilities (or just surrendering to them). His humanity had been corrupted even deeper. He forces Ellen to point her gun at her head. He mentions to Sam that he severed his spinal cord.
Sam killing Jake: creepy, scary. Sam was not himself. Before all he wanted to do was save people. Did he come back "wrong"? The expressions of the others when Sam killed Jake, whoa.
The gate is opened. Demons pour out, escaping into a world they want to rule (setting up for S3)
The YED taunts Dean with this thought of a "wrong" Sam and takes the colt from Dean. As we expected: Demons weren't the only things to escape from Hell, John did too. Takes hold of the YED, ripping it from the body it possessed, giving Dean a chance to reclaim the colt.
Dean kills the YED. He avenged the death of both his parents, the loss of his childhood, the loss of Sam's innocense and Sam's love. Remember in Salvation: John handed the reigns over to Dean and Sam to finish what he started. Dean did it, made his father proud and gave himself a sense of self worth.
Sam: he's intelligent, knows Dean and figured out Dean made a deal. Sam having realized (over last 2 yrs) how much Dean has done for him through out their lives, feels he should do the same and start taking care of Dean. S3: Sam must find away to stop the deal Dean made without dropping dead. Now that there are no more colt bullets left, Sam will have to find another way to kill the Crossroad demon.
Bad writing? my ass.
What more do you people want? How difficult are you to please?
The finale summed up the first two seasons and opened up the possibility for a war in season 3.
Posted by: WOW | May 24, 2007 9:36 AM
oh. my. god.
who on earth could say that the finale was diappointing?
are you people insane?
and whoever says that the boys can't act is clearly a moron... come on! jensen was AMAZING this episode, as someone previously mentioned a lot of actors look stupid when they cry... jensen's crying was absolutely amazing, not overdone and not too little it was perfect
season 3 is going to be superb, as the past 2 seasons have been.

No, Supernatural's ratings would be higher when it aired against repeats. Try again.
It doesn't matter anyway. Supernatural has its 22 episode renewal because the foreign market is so strong for it. Jensen said so himself in London during Coventry. Warner Brothers is part of the CBS-Warner Brothers network. There's a powerful financial incentive to keep it on the air.

In case you didnt realize Supernatural was doing bad this season against Greys anatomy repeats.

Supernatural has dropped viewers in the second half hour every single episode this season, save one. It did the same thing last year. Ask Marc Berman and Travis Yanan at pifeedback. They keep track. Grey's, CSI, Scrubs, and The Office all aired their season finale the same night.
Posted by: takestani | May 23, 2007 6:04 PM
"You cant blame everything on Greys and CSI."
If that's so then why did the rating begin to drop with the move to Thursday nights last spring and dropped again when airing against new Grey's episodes beginning with IMTOD? Coincidence?
There are other ways to watch these episodes other than live televised viewing. How many viewers record SPN every week in some form, VHS TIVO DVR? Does the CW offer online episode viewing?
Can't believe some people are that disappointed in the finale. Do all finale's have to end in a major cliffhanger these days?

OK well I started crying at minute 37 I remember exacly cause I looked at the clock to see what time it was mainly to see how much more supernatural will I enjoy.
Ok the thing with Dean wasn't predictable I mean I didn't think he was gonna do that. I thought he was gonna do something but I really had no idea what.
I have an older brother and if he died and I could make a deal with the xroads demon I would. I know sounds a little farfetched but I would do it in a hearbeat.
The episode was amazing. I didn't have a chance to read all the comments so if I'm reapeating some stuff sorry. But this season ending can not I repeat can not be compared with Grey's Anatomy.
For suprenatural I want to see what's going to happen. I want to see if they will be able to save Dean's soul and if they don't I'm seriously gonna cry he's my fav. Character, not that I don't like Sam, but I can connect more to Dean the bad boy.
Grey's Anatomy that kinda ended weird like right now if it doesn't come back I wouldn't care. Sounds rude and here I've went off topic.
I love supernatural and honestly I want to go to sleep and wake up the day of the season premiere. Wish there was something in the mean time I could watch or read about Supernatural since there isn't I've started writing my own.
But ya I think this episode was amazing it left you wanting more in all the right places.
Qestion: If Sam gets Dean out of the deal with the XRoads demon doesn't that mean he'll drop dead? Wasn't that one of the things that she said before they kissed?
Posted by: Joana | May 23, 2007 4:04 PM
Honestly, I thought the finale was amazing. It lived up to all my expectations perfectly. The acting was wonderful, the way Jensen conveyed the rage, the overwhelming despair, the self destruction-- all the emotions that drove Dean to make the ultimate sacrifice - selling his soul.
I don't think the writers took the "predictable way out" at all. After all, just think; if you had lost your whole family, everyone you ever loved-- the people who sculpted and made you whole life worth living, what would you do? Dean was desperate, he had to have Sam back and the only way he could think of that was a sure way to bring his brother back to life was to make a deal. Sure, they could've come up with some off way to bring him back (such as, some people suggested having the YED bring him back) but really, would that have been as interesting and as in-character?
This way, we have a new issue to worry about, rather than a new villain: saving Dean's soul. Personally, I think it's an original idea, considering that most shows would just introduce another character to have them fight. I guess I'm glad the YED is finally gone; it would've seemed like they were just trying to milk that storyline otherwise, so. Although, he was indeed a very good character.
I hope that a small drop in the ratings doesn't discourage any of Supernatural's crew. Just because there's not as many viewers doesn't mean that the show isn't liked any more. In fact, it has a very loyal fanbase--significantly more people like the show than dislike it, so I think that's something. The number of viewers does not determine the quality of the show.
All-in-all, Supernatural is still going strong and I can't wait for the third season! It's ignorant for people to assume and predict things for episodes that hasn't even been aired yet.

OMG The ratings were that bad. I thought I was the only one who the finale was not that great. I guess I wasnt.
Posted by: susane | May 23, 2007 1:36 PM
Ratings drop in the second half hour of Supernatural (all the time) because it always ends at about 9:55pm. If viewers change the channel before 10:00, they are not accounted for in the ratings second half hour.
BUABS was an outstanding episode that didn't draw in the viewers.
BTW: Ratings for all network shows are on a downslide in comparison to last year - not just Supernatural. Haven't you seen all the articles stating: "where have the viewers gone?"
Side note: Last year the first airing of the Greys finale was on Sunday not Thursday.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 23, 2007 1:27 PM
Anonymous: killing sam a "Jump the shark" move? Compared to Greys? Seriously?
Supernatural is sci-fi show, Greys is not.
how many times did Buffy die? how many times the ladies of Charmed die? Didn't Lois just die and come back on SV? The die and come back is normal for sci-fi shows.
sorry, don't agree with you. If they're planning on making Sam a little darker, I think this will make Sam more interesting. giving the character more layers.

speculations, speculations, speculations.

Ok, the Supernatural Season finale was badly written! It seemed to sum up the arc too quickly and drag out the unnecessary parts. Look at the ratings.
Supernatural (season finale)
- 2.741 million viewers
The breakdown
Supernatural
9pm
- 2.776 million viewers
- 1.9/3 HH
- 1.2/3 A18-49
- 1.3/4 A18-34
9:30pm
- 2.705 million viewers
- 1.8/3 HH
- 1.2/3 A18-49
- 1.3/4 A18-34
About 70,000 viewers were lost! The season finale didnt have the same weight and tight writing as Devils trap, which had 3.99 million viewers. You cant blame everything on Greys and CSI. The show is losing its edge and season 3 is the perfect time to reclaim it.

I can't believe some people were disappointed in this episode! There was so much to love about it. Yeah, okay, maybe Dean's deal was a little predictable, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was poor/unoriginal writing. I view it more as character consistancy. The majority of us know Dean possibly as well as we know our own family members, and I think that having him make that deal to save Sam was wonderfully consistant. Not to mention the fact that Dean was so emotionally stressed out and worn down that it's not like he'd sit there making a list of every possible way he can bring Sam back and then rationally decide which one to use...he'd go for the first, most obvious way that came to mind. The second he thought of a way to bring back his little brother, he was in the car and headed to the crossroads.
Okay, now that that little rant is out of the way...
- Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are definitely my favorite actors of all time. They seriously rocked this episode (not to mention the rest of the season) and they both deserve so much more recognition than the majority of the famous A-list Hollywood actors/actresses.
- HUGGING, PEOPLE!!! FULLY CONSCIOUS HUGGING!!!! WOOOO!!!
- I literally laughed out loud when they were eating pizza. I mean, it didn't look like they left the town (or if they did, they went somewhere equally run down), I highly doubt Dean would have left Sam alone, and Sam wasn't exactly in the best condition to go anywhere, so where'd the pizza come from? Delivery? Can you imagine that convo? "Yeah, hi, I'd like to order a large cheeze pizza. Mhm. We're three houses over from the building with the caved-in roof at the creepy abandoned town. Thirty minutes? Great. Thanks."
- Sam killing Jake was absolutely terrifying. It actually reminded me of Sam's vision of Dean killing that guy at the beginning of "Croatoan". Just, the way he was so cold and distant...Plus, have we ever seen Sam actually kill anything? I can't think of anything, and the fact that Sam's first on-screen kill is a human being (albeit an evil one) is just very creepy.
- I am definitely going to miss the YED. He was pretty awesome, even for evil hellspawn.
- The convo at the end was the most adorable thing ever. And then Dean's smile after he says "Well, then...", it's like someone told him Christmas was coming early.
Plus...
"You're my big brother...there's nothing I wouldn't do for you." Say it with me, people:
Awwwwwwwww, brothers!!!

If the setup of season 3 is freakin the same they sort of written themselves into a box. I dont think it was even necessary to kill off Sam in the first place. That is just a jump the shark move, hint, look at Greys.

I really admire the way Kripke and co. have kept the long story-lines consistent yet multi-layered. This episode is very interesting indeed when viewed in relation to the 'Faith' episode, for instance. The finale moved the story on and Jensen and Jared were amazing. I can't wait for Season 3.

Anonymous says:"The whole season was about Sam's powers and what he might be able to do. He did nothing, instead Kripke killed him off and brought him back, and now we have a possible "fake" sam."
This season wasn't supposed to be about what Sam could do with his powers it was about the YED "leading" Sam through his visions.
"It seems like season 3 is just gonna be role reversal. In the beginning of the season Dean was the one dying and poof dad makes a deal, dean feels guilty. This worked really nice the first time. The only difference going into the third is that Sam is the one with the guilt and Deans got the deal."
How do we know Sam will feel guilty? Dean's not dead yet. If Sam goes darkside, who's to say he's going to give a damn whether or not Dean lives/dies. Dean may have to stop the deal himself. Don't forget what John told Dean still applies: "If you can't save him you'll have to kill him".
Who knows what new characters will be introduced.
The door for anything to happen in S3 is wide open.

Carla, you sound very disappointed in SPN. That's too bad. "Kripke's creativity is limited and takes things to their logical conclusion"? Aren't you being a little harsh? I'd say that Kripke's biggest problems are the recaps and spoilers not the writing. The recaps are spoilers. Previews sometimes are as well. Honestly, I hope they nix the "previously on" next year.
AHBL Part 2 could have/would have been better if:
1) Recap - only shown scenes from Part 1 of AHBL
2) TV Guide didn't print a picture of Jensen holding the Colt.
3) Most of all: JDM's return was kept confidential, even during the opening credits. That would have made John's escape from hell a surprise.
Without any help from any type of spoiler:
1) were you expecting that Mary knew the YED?
2) Were you expecting that the YED had fed its blood to Sam?
3) were you expecting that the YED's plan was for the "gifted" children to kill each other off leaving one?
4) We knew Ash would die, but were you expecting the demise of the Roadhouse and all hunters inside?
5) Prior to part 2 were you expecting the colt to be the key that opened the gate to hell? were you expecting to see the colt at all? I assumed the YED had destroyed it - until my TV Guide came in the mail - that sucked.
6) Were you expecting Sam to get stabbed and die? (I found out about this cuz someone didn't use a spoiler warning in a blog - this also sucked)
7) Were you expecting Sam to kill Jake in the manner that he did?
8) Were you expecting the YED to feed on Dean's emotions regarding the above and further plant the seed that the deal was too good to be true and Sam came back "wrong"? Personally, I thought this was a nice touch.
Even previous episodes had surprises - to name a few:
9) In BUABS while it was evident that Sam was possessed, did you expect that he was being possessed by Meg. That was a nice surprise. What about Meg locking herself inside Sam?
10) FPB: did you suspect that the prison guard was Deacon?
11) Croatoan: Did you expect that Sam would be immune to the virus, that it was a test on Sam, all the infected folk would disappear or that what's his name was possessed?
The ratings: they suck like all CW programs, but it doesn't mean that its quality and writing don't meet or surpass some high rated programs. (Lost: writing sucked so bad during beginning of S2 that I haven't watched the show since. Grey's got so bland that I didn't even tune in when JDM reappeared. I had to remove myself from Prison Break for a few episodes this year due to bad writing - too many boneheaded moves made by the characters. Desperate Housewives storylines continue to decline in quality. My opinions of course.)
I'm not sure what type of expectations you have for this program or what directions you want it to go or what programs you compare it to. For me, it's fabulous, highly entertaining, exceeds my expectations and I would rather watch Supernatural than any high rated program on TV.

The whole season was about Sam's powers and what he might be able to do. He did nothing, instead Kripke killed him off and brought him back, and now we have a possible "fake" sam. It seems like season 3 is just gonna be role reversal. In the beginning of the season Dean was the one dying and poof dad makes a deal, dean feels guilty. This worked really nice the first time. The only difference going into the third is that Sam is the one with the guilt and Deans got the deal. The plot is kind of the same, except with the 200 plus demon army.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2007 11:50 AM
Kripke did step it up, simplysuper21. How can Sam have a legitimate excuse to dabble with his powers (he got the powers from the blood dripped in his mouth as a baby) if his brother doesn't have a ticking clock on him? The deal Dean made was the point. Everything was working up to that. Ava had dreams, she ended up being able to control and summon demons. Sam better come up with something like that if he wants to break the crossroads demon's deal. However, once you sample the darkness.....
The boys are on the road again, just like in season one. There's just more urgency. The show's returned to form. Give me that over "you saved the cheerleader....now we can save the world" and Nathan and mama Petrelli eye f***ing each other any day of the week. I prefer the brassy, blue collar classic rock version that is Supernatural.

I'm sorry the season finale was very weak in my opinion, now that I viewed it once more. It lacked any originality or new insight, it ended where we began. Ok, that would be all right if this was the series finale and Kripke wanted to tie things up. It’s not ok when going into a third season. I read an article where he said viewers would be happy with this ending, I wasn’t! I thought they did a lot of talking and not much showing. STEP IT UP KRIPKE!!!!! You establish this mega storyline all season and we are on the edge of our seat with anticipation, and then boom we hit a wall. All the freakin plot points in the end were predictable and frankly didn’t make much freakin sense. Don’t get me on the angst overload. The ending speech between Sam and Dean, literally made me want to shoot Dean and get the dragging monologue over with. Ok, we get it they love each other; they will do everything for each other. Get a thesaurus so we can see a little variety! This is simply my opinion; I respect everyone else’s views and thoughts, so please respect mine
Posted by: simplysuper21 | May 22, 2007 9:24 AM
Lassie: I didn't intend on sounding sarcastic. I do agree with you that it wasn't very creative having Dean make a deal. In fact it was overly predictable, but IMO it was the only way Dean could understand why John sacrificed himself to hell for him.
If Dean didn't make the deal and John was still released from hell, yes Dean could find peace but not fully because he still would not understand why John did what he did.

Am I jumping the gun? Time will tell. I'm not one of those who kneel at the altar of Kripke.
I want to like this show much more than I do. The characters are wonderful but the storytelling is mediocre at best. It really needs to step up if they want the ratings to improve past the base audience numbers that it's stalled at.
He takes things to their logical conclusion, really, but that's where the problem lies with me. I want to "think" I know where he's going and then have them go a completely unexpected direction. Considering the subject matter, the possibilities should be endless. Instead Kripke takes us exactly where one would think it would go. His creativity isn't exactly far reaching. It's pretty limited apparently.
Which is fine, I suppose but I was hoping for more when I started watching this show.
Posted by: Carla P. | May 22, 2007 6:33 AM
Ooohhh... Well, what can I say? The finale was perfect (cocerning the main storyline AND, of course, the fact that the SN's 3rd season being given the green light)! First: Dean's deal with the Crossroad Deamon - 1 year? - Guys, it's only natural, and I guess we'll find out how Sam'll have coped with it exactly by the 3rd season finale.
Second: Sam's coming back from the dead - that makes another mistery, but it'll bring much more interest to the developement of the story AND the characters as well.
Glad to see how Dean finally releases himself from the greater part of the guilt he has been suffering from since his father's self-sacrificing to save his life and his duty to protect Sam no matter what it takes or otherwise kill him. Now that he has made this deal, I guess, he is getting rid of this low esteem of his (at least, it's not so bad anymore). And besides, his father is no longer in hell, but in some other, better place to bear his exsistence, and that is also very comforting!
The actors were especially fabulous in this episode. I spent the whole 40 minutes of the show with my mouth opened and my eyes wet. The "brothers" have shown great progress in acting since the beginning of the show. Dean's monologue at Sam's dead body; that very look in Bobby's eyes when the brothers came to him TOGETHER, Same alive in one piece and Dean hiding his eyes from Bobby's$ Bobby ripping into Dean about his deal and putting his hand on Dean's cheek and then Ellen's unexpectable comeback and Dean putting his arms around her and holding her so tight, as if she were his mother; Sam stonecold shooting Jake dead and then wiping the drops of blood from his face with that creepy look of his; John escaping hell and grabbing the YED, and Dean finally putting the bullet into mthrfckr's heart; the W. boys' speachless and tearful reunion; and finally - Dean's gorgeous grin in the end - THAT ALL WAS F*CKING BRILLIANT!!!
Now just one question: How the hell am I supposed to live up to September without new episodes?..

Anonymous - I can't tell if you're being sarcastic with your first sentence or not, but okay. :-)
Yes, I am okay with it now, and some of it does have to do with, hopefully, Dean letting go of some of the guilt, but not because he understands what his Dad went through, instead because Dad is no longer suffering in Hell. Also, Sam is alive, and the Yellow-Eyed Demon is dead. So, the things the Dean felt were important have been taken care of.

Carla P., are you sure you're not jumping the gun on you're assumption of what has been set up for S3?
Have some faith in Kripke's creative mind.

totally amazing. i can beleave that dean would do that for his brother, but why?? i love dean, (jensen ackles) he is the greatest actor, i think he should win an award of some kind.
both him and jared. they are really amazing actors, i mean c'mos, who else can pull off looking so dead huh? and dean was just amazing i had to say it again, i loved this episode, sam will find a way for dean to live, i know he will.

I hit "post" a little too soon with my previous comment:
I wanted to add that all of the actors did a great job - Jensen, Jared, Jim Beaver, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (in his very short appearance).

"I'm a little disappointed that the writers didn't come up with a more creative way to have Dean save Sam, but it is what is, and I'm okay with it now."
At least you're ok with it. lassie, think of it this way: now Dean knows what John was going through and why John made the deal with the YED to save Dean. John couldn't let Dean die, just like Dean couldn't let Sam die. Making the deal helped Dean find peace with John's death.
Posted by: Anonymous | May 21, 2007 10:02 AM
Neo: Yes, Dean did make a deal with the demon before in "Road House Blues". He captured the demon in a devil's trap: the deal was to allow a man (who previously made a deal with the demon) to live in return, the demon would go free instead of being exorcised to hell.
Posted by: sparg | May 21, 2007 8:28 AM
I'm a little disappointed that the writers didn't come up with a more creative way to have Dean save Sam, but it is what is, and I'm okay with it now.
Once I got passed the deal, there were so many scenes to love -- Jensen Ackles was fantastic in this episode! He sold me in every scene. I loved his scene with dead Sam...god so heart-breaking.
I loved all of the scenes between Bobby and Dean! Jim Beaver and Jensen Ackles were so spot-on in their scenes.

Fantastic finale!
Thanks to all the actors of this show for their superb acting.
I'm incredibly impressed with Jared, I love Sam so much right now that I can't even think straight!
Sam killing that bitch Jake was one of the best moments and Dean giving up everything for his little brother is why I love this show so much!
Posted by: Kitty | May 20, 2007 4:48 PM
I am satisfied with the finale, and how it's not a cliffhanger finale. However, Dean sacrificing himself to save Sam, I did not see that coming! But this is what makes it all the more interesting, with what the writers will have in store for season 3 and I cannot wait!
Posted by: Lisa | May 20, 2007 10:49 AM
You can tell that there is going to be some brotherly love in season 3,I was yelling no Dean don't make the deal, stop, but, the other half of me was saying, make the deal it's the only way to save Sam.Then how Bobby teared threw Dean for making the deal especially when Bobby said; How do you think Sam's gona feel when he finds out you are going to hell.
Dean made me cry when he said;please don't tell sam.
My other favorite scene was when the YED was about to kill Dean, when out of no wear Daddy grabed YED then Dean shooting him.I shouted yah!,when YED died.He has caused them alot of sadness.Dean almost dying, his father's death and sam dying.See all of it has to do with dying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even if YED(aka EVIL KILLER)is dead, what about the other demons,Dean and Sam are going to have to really pull it together in Season 3.And how in the world is Sam going to get Dean out of making that deal,I mean you hear what the deal demon said if Dean trys to get out of the deal Sam drops dead.MAN I cannot wait For season 3.It's going to be along summer.I never thought I would say this but, c,mon SEPTEMBER GET MOVING ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.Bye

Love this show! The finale was excellent!!Jensen Ackles is an incredible actor....
But Jared Padalecki owns my heart and soul!!the man owns the screen everytime i see him,and he is soooo awesome at playing a darker Sam....

I love Supernatural but I'm a little confused on things. Didn't Dean make a deal with that demon before? I forget what episode it was but he was seen 'closing the deal' with her. Someone please explain.
Posted by: Neo Hosenc | May 19, 2007 9:29 PM
I wanted to like this episode, I really did. The acting was there but the story sort of failed me. Everything was so predictable.
I'm glad they ended the YED sooner rather than later.
Now we know what will be happening at the end of next season. Dean's time will be up. Way to keep us guessing Kripke. Hopefully the payoff next season will be better than this one. Sam getting killed negated all the dark destiny talk we've had to endure this entire season and it also negated all of the angst we had over Dean having to possibly kill Sam. That all meant nothing in the end. Having Dean make a deal to bring him back just sends us right back to go and we're at Sam may go evil again, only this time it's Dean's fault for bringing him back when he should have stayed dead.
So it's basically a "wash, rinse, repeat" set up with Sam and Dean now switching places. Sam will be desperately trying to find a way to undo the deal and save Dean and Dean will probably be doing the moralizing and keeping Sam from doing questionable things now that he may be a little on the darker side just like Sam had to do for Dean this season, because of his grief fueling his bloodlust and instinct to kill first ask questions later.
Don't get me wrong, I think that Ackles will be able to pull off his fate better/differently than Padalecki and put a whole different feel on the scenario but really Kripke, can't ya come up with something new?
Posted by: Carla P. | May 19, 2007 5:06 PM
I'm so glad Ellen survived! She and Bobby make terrific back-up for the boys, and I hope to see more of them teaming up in Season 3.
Sam killing Jake is a fascinating turn of events -- I can't wait to see how this will be explored! I don't think Sam was brought back wrong, but the Yellow-Eyed Demon has certainly planted a seed of doubt in Dean.
Dean selling his soul for Sam's life is absolutely heartbreaking. I'm anxious to see how Dean will live out his one year -- whether he'll live with hope that Sam will save him, or whether he'll give in, accept the inevitable.
Jared and Jensen were both INCREDIBLE in the season finale. Jensen definitely deserves that Emmy, and I can only hope the judges realise that genre shows are just as deserving as mainstream television.
To all the actors, writers, producers, directors, and crew of Supernatural -- THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR AN AWESOME SEASON!!!

OK first of I am sorry I didn't watch it on the CW, but my sister has been watching CSI and the season finale for that was on. So if I could have watched it on the CW I would have(don't want to argue
with my sister)
But I did catch it on the Space channel last night and it was amazing!!!!!:)
It was sad and sad and well mostly sad, but it was great!!
Well I can handle a lot of demons being let out, the yellow eyed demon being dead, even Ash dying(sniff, sniff) but Dean only having
one year to live, well that is just wrong!!!
I mean ya have to have a third season, we have to know what will happen to Dean...and Sam, and everyone else.
Please bring it back for a third season...please, please, pleasssse!!!!!
I love Supernatural and a lot of people do!!!
Alright before I go one more thing, I think the reason the ratings were so low is because of three other shows having there season finales, I mean you did change it to a night with a lot of shows on at the same time...so if it comes back next years I think you should put it in the place were Gilmore Girls used to be,that way it will have a chance:):):)
But anyway, thank you for having such a great show on your net work:):):):)

First of all, the season finale ROCKED. Great acting by all(go Jensen). This was obviosly supposed to be rhe series finale if the show did'nt pick up for season 3. I'mm so glad it did. Kinda sorry to see YED go as he was the major threat. Shows don't last long after big bads have been dealt with. Remember Dark Angel lasted only a season after manticore. Stiil there is a lot left to be dealt. Maybe Meg will fill YED's shoes. Also will Sam's abilities go away since YED's dead, he was the source of it. Then there is the crossroad demon arc and FBI arc, not to forget the 100's of demons which just got out. Hope they keep up the level in season 3. Would love for there to be a season 4 as well.

Does anyone know the name of the song and artist that played during the season finale when they showed the flash of clips of the previous episodes? Thanks!

One word. Emmy!!
If they're not nominated for an Emmy for this ep, I will be deeply disappointed.
No other actor that I've known can break my heart as much as Jensen has this season and the finale just broke the last little part of it with his monologue to Sam's dead body. I totally understand why he did, because I would do it in a heartbeat for my family, no questions asked.
When Daddy came back, I sqee'd out loud. Am I the only one? I think not.
Between Bobby's little talk and Sam's little talk, I think Dean FINALLY realises that he's worthy of everything good that happens in his life, that Sam would return all of those life-saving moments without question 'cuz that what family is about.
That final scene when Dean throws the gun in the trunk and says "we've got work to do" mimics the Pilot in such a great way.
There's not one bad thing that I could honesly say about this ep or season and I'm ecstatic that the CW decided to pick it up for another season.
Kudos to everyone associated with SN, most especially the actors for without them the script is just words on a page. Mwah!! Much love to all of you!!!

God I love this show. While I wish Kripke hadn't gone the most predictable route ever, by killing Sam off and then having Dean make the deal to save him, the actual execution of said story was beyond awesome.
All the actors brought their A-game. The dialogue and writing, direction and even the cheesy CGI all worked beautifully together.
As far as Jensen goes, I just don't have words for how amazing he was in the finale. His scenes with Bobby, with the Crossroads Demon, with John and of course with Sam were all so guuuuuhhhhh! See? No words.

You know, I'm actually surprised that no one has mentioned the graphics that the tech team put in in this last episode. The moment when the bullet left the colt, I was impressed. I also loved the 'spirits' that left hell as Dean and YEDdie were squaring off, and before Papa Winchester showed back up. And after the gates of hell were opened (how great was it that Hell was in a crypt that only could be opened by the colt. No wonder YED wanted it way back in season one, way more than just the, I want it so you don't kill me idea it implied) how it sent a bolt of electricity lighting up the train tracks and breaking the 2,000 mile devils trap? PURE GENIUS.
The Boy's acting was supurb as well, and I agree that that was the high light of the show. But I think I'm way more passionate about the continuity that the writers have put into this show (As compaired to LOST and GREY'S. My friend watches both and complains that you don't know what happened for months. Whether or not a character lived or died. I'm so SO Glad SPN doesn't do that, because I couldn't watch, and it's a mark of great writers to keep things going, and to answer questions as they come) Bravo to the writing team, and Kripke & Co. for keeping things moving and not leaving us confused.
Which leaves me with the director of this episode -- you rock. And that's all I can say. Beautiful shots, great vision; you are the best! You kept me wondering what would jump out from behind, as you focused the camera around Dean as he waited to make his deal. (I was on edge waiting for some evil scary thing to pop out). And you conveyed emotions that made me, as the viewer, that some episodes of television shows (AND movies) can not do. Bravo to you.
And Jared and Jensen (Along with Bobby and Ellen's actors, and YEDdie, and JDM) damn you all for making me cry. And not being able to talk about it for a few days after. I seriously couldnt talk about this episode without exploding to a friend who watches on occasion but had to work that night. You kill me ded. Srsly.
Posted by: Jess | May 19, 2007 8:37 AM
This was Jared's finest hour.
I can't imagine a world without Sam now! He's the best character on tv.
What a great 2 parts finale! That's what I love to see on this show, the Winchesters killing evil sons of bitches!
Evil Sam I'm waiting for you in season 3!

I'm glad that John didn't say anything after he climbed out of hell the scene between the three of them was perfect and words would ahve ruined it.
This was one of Jensen's best episodes, most actors look stupid when they try to cry but he actually looked like he was crying.
Posted by: Catherine | May 19, 2007 1:30 AM
"One thing we all agreed on – good Lord, everyone involved in the show can act rings around most other people on TV."
I only wish more people would see that. The actors on this show are so much better and so much more deserving than pretty much anything else out there that is getting the attention and the awards. Grey's should be fighting to stay in competition with Supernatural, not the other way around. But at least we get another season (hopefully more) because if the past two seasons and this year's finale were any indication of how great this show is, then we clearly don't even know that half of it. the creators are true genius, the actors are fantastic, the show is incredible. I can't say it enough. It doesn't get any better than Jensen and Jared. They're the real deal.
Posted by: Shannon | May 19, 2007 1:04 AM
I don't have a lot of time to comment at the moment but I loved it.
When it comes to Dean's deal. While I wish there could've been another way, I think it was very understandable that he did it in his desperation and it was completely in character. I honestly can't think of another way that he could've brought Sam back (and obviously Sam couldn't stay dead). It wasn't the smartest decision to make but it was an understandable one and I loved the confrontation between Bobby and Dean over it. I'm looking forward to see what they do with it next season. While it'd be nice for Dean to start learning he has self worth without needing to sacrifice himself, I think this opens up a great way for next season to show him getting that kind of growth. With Sam's speech at the end about wanting to help save Dean, Dean will start seeing how much he's worth to his loved ones too due to how much they'd do for him in return. At the end he seemed to have some weight lifted off of him. Sure they still have things they have to encounter but they can do it together. The smile at the end of the episode from Dean showed to me that he now has a re-newed purpose for the hunt now that the weight of the Demon and knowing his father was in hell has been lifted.

Ok so Jensen reduced me to tears ... SEVERAL TIMES this episode... **shakes fist at his talent** Jeff Morgan made me jump out of my seat fist pumping and jumping up and down... which caused my pup to run for cover lol and Kripke & Co the evil geniuses that they are raised more questions than answered.
There is no doubt that Supernatural is the best show on the network. If they dont start to recognize the gem this show is another network just might.

The Supernatural finale was SUPERB! It wasn't a cliffhanger, and wasn't intended to be, and I for one greatly appreciated it. This was a marvelous demonstration of how to resolve story issues to fan satisfaction while opening up multiple new ones to pursue in a new season. The story worked beautifully, the acting was astonishing, the production quality was film-level, and the expectations for the beginning of season three are positively through the roof.
I don't understand anyone being disappointed in this episode. Dean pursued the only avenue he thought he had, given the combination of his knowledge and emotion, but even knowing what he would do, how it worked out was emphatically not predictable, not boring, and not disappointing.
Thank you Eric Kripke, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Kim Manners, Jim Beaver, Samantha Ferris, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and all the cast and crew for a glorious experience!

I've loved this show from day one, and there have been some terrifically acted scenes... hell, some wonderfully done episodes as well.
This finale? It rocked from minute one until the end. I was on the edge of - well, i was on the floor. Couldn't be sitting all that far away on the couch. Had to be upfront and personal. But I was on the edge.
Like many others, I'd hoped to hear from Daddy Winchester - but it was so much better this way. The simple respectful nod from Sam to John and the knowledge in John's eyes as he gazed at Dean... Perfection.
And how I loved to hate/love Y.E.D. Lord, he's made of awesome.
There's so much that can be said. But if I say anything else, it has to be this:
Jensen Ackles is a force to be reckoned with. We all know that Jared's got this new movie deal (which is fantastic news, we're all proud), but I've gotta say it - WHO KNEW? Who knew that Jensen was really an actor of such excellent calibre? I hate saying I was shocked. But I was. He gets better with every passing week. I can't wait to watch the rest of his career.
Now, if some people would kindly take their heads out of... the clouds... and change the schedule?
I CANNOT GO THROUGH THIS NEXT YEAR, the wondering if they'll be picked up - all because some idiot decided it would be a good thing to place the show at 9P.M. on Thursdays?
Good Lord, who was that fool?
Cannot wait for season 3!

I thought that this finale delivered in spades. We had angst ridden beginning, leading to Dean's deal and an intriguing set up for next season, that tied in nicely to arc of the Yellow-Eyed Demon. I loved that while Sam knows Dean's secret, Dean doesn't know Sam's.
Dean, Sam, Bobby...were completely awesome in this episode. All are amazing actors who gave amazing performances. More Bobby next season, I hope! Hey! If you can't get Jensen or Jared for a Q&A, how about Bobby?
I did hope for more from John, but he's out so, there's always hope for more next season. All in all a wonderful, worthy finale *g* It's going to be a long wait for season 3!

This finale rocked! Season 1 left me very very upset with the writers because they had to go and crunch up the Impala and poor Dean bleeding to death.
My only issue with this episode was Dean. WHY OH WHY DID HE HAVE TO MAKE THAT DEAL?! But we all know Sam's going to do something even more drastic to save Dean, so I'm really not too worried about that.
Boy, I think I cried more on the 2 part finale then I did with the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My god can Jensen act! He's freakin amazing! And Jared rocks too. But, in my opinion, Jensen is way more talented. I cried when he cried, laughed when he laughed. Brilliant! I'm so excited for season 3. I wish I could speed up time so Sept will get here faster.

I loved it...
Kripke is genius, because he just turn the pace of the story...
It is not that they are looking for their father and avenging their mother anymore..
now it will be more like about themselves and in true sense hunting things and saving people..
I totally liked how it end and how third season can go totally in different direction...
and it will keep SN unique and fresh..
Excellent finale and one hell of a series..
five out of five stars

This was a great episode. I felt completely satisfied at the end & can't wait for next season. I want more of Bobby & Ellen.
Who says Jared can't act. The guy is great & has developed so much this season. This show would not be the same without Jared playing Sam. No one doubts that Jensen is a truly talented actor but this show has really let Jared develop as an actor & I will follow him wherever he goes.
The CW really need to do some serious work to support this show. The ratings were the worst of the season last night with it airing against all the other season finales.
It's not the quality of the show that is the issue but the competition & I'm sorry but this ratings system really sucks. Apparently it is 1 box equates to a count of 20,000 viewers so households with the Neilsen boxes - 100 boxes = 2,000,000 viewers. Who thought up that maths.
Don't forget to tell everyone who missed it about the repeats.

I loved this episode. Jensen and Jared's acting skills have grown so much.
I especially loved it when Bobby ripped into Dean. It just seemed like a father son moment the way that Bobby held Dean's face. I do see where some people would feel disappointed, maybe in the part where Dean made that deal. Storyline wise it makes sense because it gives the writers that whole arc to work with til the end of S3. But it also makes makes sense for Dean. We all know Dean will shoot first and ask questions later when it comes to saving the people he loves. And yeah it would have been noble for him to have changed his mind. But Dean needed his brother back ASAP, and what's quicker than making a deal with a demon? Remember Sammy's the geek boy who would have looked at everything else first- that's why it's a typical Dean move. Besides the last time at the crossroads, although he did condemn it he was tempted. So why not use that oppourtunity when it really mattered?
Besides, this it's just a feeling, but I don't trust the return of Ellen. Don't get me wrong,I love the tough broad, but I just find her story a bit too easy and the Holy Water shot wouldn't have worked on a high level demon such as the YED. Also we can't really account for the time she was gone, except her word.
As for Jake, yeah he was a bastard for what he did, but I think deep down he was a good guy, but put in a bad position. I think that Jake was also just an example of everything else in this story about what one will do and sacrifice to save themselves or the people they care about.
And I have to say the guy who played the YED was sinfully delicious, ah I will miss him.

Amazing. I cried when bobby said dont you think its time to bury sam? that just made me cry. The ending was a great way to end it with " we've got work to do" PERFECT! All together a very good one! This show is by far the best show on tv.

I'm so in love with Supernatural.
This finale went way beyond my expectations, and my expectations were high!
I loved the way the whole story so far was remembered and paid attention to. I loved that Bobby and Ellen were OK and played a part. I loved the insight into Sam and Dean's love for each other. I loved how the finale set up some interesting possible directions for Season 3. I loved the resolution of John's sacrifice. I was atounded by the acting - Jensen and Jared are superb. In short I loved everything and I'm so grateful for the wonderful story-telling of this show.
Thnak-you to all concerned, and keep it coming.

I loved the finale and was SOOOO happy when I realized they were going to be making another Season. I love you all who agree with me and say Supernatural is the best show ever! The acting on this show is amazing, they never fail to make it dramatic when they're meant to. I can't wait till September comes and I can watch Supernatural again!

I positively agree with all those who know how extroardinary this show and episode are.
sorry to hear some viewers were disappointed with this finale.
Kripke stayed true to the events beginning with opening scene of the pilot all the way through this 2 part season finale. What more can you ask? Did you want to see the 100-200 demons that were released from hell maul Dean, Sam, Ellen & Bobby? Killing all of them.
He made it clear in an interview that there would not be a cliffhanger ending because he wanted to wrap up the YED arc in case the CW didn't give him a season 3. (Doing so he pushed back the completion of the FBI side plot)
If cancelled, he didn't want to leave the fans with a cliffhanger and having us be like: OMG WHAT? WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!! AHHHHHH.
He had to make this work as both a series finale and a season finale which is not easy to do.
Mission accomplished.

I just have to say that i ADORED this episode. it KILLED ME. i cried thru the entire thing. i mean, SAMMY was DEAD *sniffles* it's was soo horrible and dean's monologue was AMAZING. it just showed you how much he does love his brother and the fact that he went to the crossroads proves that. OMG! when she said 1 year my heart broke. 1 year..for sam's life and he TOOK it. OH DEAN, and Bobby ripping him a new one was just a powerful scene. i loved him. They have such great chemistry together. i love that one line. "What is it with you winchesters and SELF SACRIFICE" it's TRUE, MOM DID IT, DAD DID IT and now DEAN DID IT. and i love that "Do you really have that low an opinion of yourself?" DAMN IT DEAN. he could have found a better way but he was just too scared to lose him. It's his job to protect him and if giving his life is what he had to do he did it. I LOVED how Sammy just shot Jake. NO REMORSE. the bastard did him in first, it was his time to die. he killed alot of people and what he did is going to get more killed. that gate..those demons. they are NOT made of fucking sunshine you moron, they will kill and torture and infest. that's what they do. DAMN MORON *sorry* and then the DADDY. O M G!!! it was just sooooooo...undescribable. i dont even know what to say. he gave Dean the chance to FINALLY finish it. to kill this thing that stole the people they loved from them. and it was BEAUTIFUL. and Dean telling him it was for their MOM. *sniffles* TOOO GOOD. the VERY end with Sammy calling out Dean on his death was amazing. the moment was priceless. I really think that dean needed to hear that. that he means the world to his brother and that he will do ANYTHING for him. and he will. he'll find a way. if anyone can do it. Sammy can :D
Well, that's my rambling. i just ADORED this episode and cant wait for next season. i know that Kripke will make it good. HE BETTER or I'll Rock salt his ass :D

OMG!!!!!! this episode was fantastic. it was exciting, chilling, and not what most people expected aka me. there were some parts i was shocked about and kind of disappointed like how dean made the deal with the crossroad demon. how the hell is he gonna get out that cause even if he tries to kill the demon and stop the deal SAM DROPS DEAD so idk what there gonna do. and the fact that their dad finally crawled his way out of hell and then saved them but then he looks at his boys and cries and HE DOESN'T EVEN SAY ANYTHING. seriously he could of said i love u or goodbye anything it touched me though when he cried. the good things i was happy about is the demon is dead once and for all and the two brothers have to hunt down a whole pack of demons for next season so i can't wait!!!!!!!! lol.
Oh yea i do think sam does go bad side and what the fuk!DEans Gonna Die Oh Helll No !!!! Dean can't die i wont let him not only we have the last name it like a bond

Great finale. Dean did the only thing he could, i mean, " what was he supposed to do?". He knew that making the deal was wrong, but Sam has always been his number one priority and will continue to be so.
There were a lot of things happening in this episode, and i liked how it closed. Even as the Demon croaked there are so many more issues now; impending war, Dean's life and Sam's sanity ( is he the same old Sammy, huh?). Guess the writers have their hands full.
I am so happy the show is going on for a third season, and hopefully many more. Cant for the new season to start.

oh. my. god. that episode was absolutly AMAZING!!!!! i loved that Dean would do anything for Sam, even sell his own soul. Although i didn't like how it actually happened. personally, i think that when they're dad came back from hell, it should have been for real and, finding out that Sam was dead, go back to hell to take his place. the fact that John was a mute ghost was weired. and he didn't even look at Sam, just Dean. i will kinda miss The Demon though. i loved his cocky sarcastic additude. but i'm glad the shows comming back for a third season, and i will officially be going crazy until september

AWESOME: Perfect finale and perfect set-up for Season 3. (I'm glad Kripke didn't leave us with a 4 mos long cliffhanger again. That was torture.)
I need to buy another box of tissues. The tears began at the end of the recap and continued. (damn pms)
Many of us have said this since IMTOD: an emmy nomination is well deserved for Jensen. Same as Nicole, I also enjoyed the deathbed scene with Dean speaking of their childhood. (BTW, the first issue of the comic book addresses young Sam questioning young Dean about Mary.)
The obvious: Dean would go back to that crossroads to make a deal. (at least they hired a better actress this time) But..but a year! ONE YEAR!! Sam definitely will have major work to do in season 3 to save his big bro.
Who believed the YED when he said that Sam came back from the dead not quite right? I admit it was freaky watching Sam kill Jake and then so calmly wiped the blood splatter off his face. (Fabulous job Jared did. His talent soars when he brings a darkness to Sam. Will we be seeing more of this in S3?)
Have I mentioned how great Bobby is? He's like an uncle. The talking to he gave Dean, all the while understanding why Dean made the deal. Loved the look he gave undead Sam - LOL - priceless.
Ellen: also glad she's still alive. I like the character and the actress does a good job.
John: saved Dean's life again and helped save the day. The one thing that made up for the miniscule part JDM had is this: for a moment John and Dean worked together to kill the YED.
Obvious #2: that "Roadkill" was the prequil to John's moving on. There was no need for an exchange of words, facial expressions said it all. Dean: By killing the Demon and John's being set free, he knew he made his father proud. In his own mind he redeamed himself for the time(s)he thought he disappointed John. John: All his hard work of 22 yrs paid off: Mary's death was avenged, the YED's dead, and his boys survived. You see his relief that what he started is finally over.
The way the ending mirrored the end of the pilot (except reversed brothers) was a nice touch. Dean has his hunting mojo back.
Do we really have to wait 4 months?
Posted by: jas | May 18, 2007 12:28 PM
This was obviously meant as a series finale if they didn't get picked up. We would have been just fine knowing they were still out there. I would have taken that over a huuuge cliffhangar and then have the show pulled out from under us.
Good episode, much better than last weeks.

There was no surpising finale because Kripke and crew did not know if the show was coming back.
They did the best they could and the episode was great.
The CW needs to promote supernatural much more and have more confidence in this amazing show.

What an amazing season finale! I loved it. I agree with everyone that the acting was superb. Can anyone say EMMY?!? I don't agree that the episode lacked anything. Last season's finale had that huge cliffhanger, but this season has the deal Dean made with the demon hanging over his head. I think that is a pretty good cliffhanger for me. I do agree that when John jumped in to distract the yellow-eyed demon so that Dean could kill it that there could have been some dialoge there, but we are talking about some seriously macho guys. They don't really verbalize their feelings. I think it was pretty realistic. Jared and Jensen were just amazing the entire season. Kudos to everyone for a smashing season and I look forward to Season 3. It's going to be a long summer!!!

What was not to love about it ....I'm still amazed lol ...and seriously is it September yet ???
Posted by: Tash | May 18, 2007 10:52 AM
The show was spectacular! I admit, I hated seeing Dean make the sacrifice, but - WOW - what juicy story lines it opens up...and what else could he do? Can't have Sam and Dean without Sam, lol. Besides, I for one am glad we had a little resolution this year...cliffies all the time would get old hate, too.
Jensen, Jared, and Jim did absolutely wonderful jobs...I was blown away by Jensen in particular. If these actors hadn't brought it home like they did, it wouldn't have had near the impact.
I particularly enjoyed the scenes with Dean at Sam's deathbed and Bobby tying into him for doing what he did. That glimpse into Dean's psyche is just what I had hoped to see...what I've been writing about and how I imagine he sees himself. And then we get Bobby's tirade. Who knew Bobby loved that boy so much? I knew he cared...but, DANG, he CARES. The part where Bobby lays his hand on Dean's cheek is just priceless...a wonderful SN moment to be treasured.
Sam? Gone darkside? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe they just want us (and Dean) to think so. Maybe its more like Buffy, still Sam, but with a little more darkness. I have confidence that Kripke will make it okay because we can't have it any other way. I do think Sam's completely lost his innocence now...and that is sad.
However, I'm so relieved that Ellen is still alive...and so sad that John had to go...AGAIN!!! But at least he's in a better place now *wink, wink*
I'm so psyched for next year and I can't wait for the new season already. I guess I'll have to cope with the excitement through fan fic writing, lol!

This show has fantastic actors.
To all those idiots saying Jared can't act, I say WTF??
Last night Jared was so great that I fell in love with him.
Sam and Dean are the best duo on tv and I hope to see Bobby much more in season 3.
My only issue is the lack of Sam action.
I hope to see more action Sam in season 3. Let him kick some ass!
If he has to be part evil to do that, so be it!

when dean pretty much gave his life for sam, it was SO sad, i mean, it was really great of him, but i love dean, and only one year? what is that? aaaah, i really love supernatural i dont know what im gonna do without supernatural and OTH, thoes are my favorite shows. why do we have to wait? ah, but im glad sam came back. he is deans only family, and i can see why dean gave his life for sam. 1 year isnt very long at all. i hope sam finds a way for dean to live!!! then there can be a 4th sweason and a 5th. im SOOO glad supernatural has a season 3 though!!!
cant wait!

I loved the ep. It's great when you have such a dark show with two hot main characters who can actually act. This was a perfect blend of dark snark that is guranteed every Thursday at 9pm. All I can say is Sam looked to be beginning his downward spiral and Dean as always was perfect. It's interesting that really other than killing Jake Sam could have been dead and Dean would have still saved the world. I think if anyone can Sam can save Dean's soul.... I just look forward to the bumpy ride that is Season 3.
