The CW Upfronts: Tuesday Schedule
Beauty and The Geek returns at 8/7c -- mini video-preview, nothing too exciting. We do love seeing those geeks again, though!
And now, on to 9/8c -- a new drama called Reaper. Hey! It's that kid from The Loop. He has an appropriately goofy face. We almost want to laugh just when he appears on screen -- regardless of whether or not he's funny.
They've got "Young Folks" by Peter, Bjorn and John playing in the background -- love it!
Okay, so the funny kid finds out that his parents have literally sold his soul to the devil. Ouch! And now the devil's following him around everywhere. And his life is a "living hell." Get it? Weird -- if this plot were played for dramatic purposes, we could see it being kind of interesting, like Buffy, Supernatural, Smallville, etc. But it seems to be a comedy, all quick cuts and funny reaction faces and poppy music. Hard to read at this point.
The Reaper stars are out now... kind of acting like tools. Oh, and there's the "devil," making a "scary" appearance. Did you know Kevin Smith is behind this show? I wonder how it'll do -- is this something you guys would be into?

I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO DELETE THE FINAL VERONICA MARS FROM MY DVR. VM WAS THE SMARTEST AND BEST WRITTEN SHOW ON TV, LET ALONE THE CW. COME TO YOUR SENSES!

Please stop comparing Reaper to SPN.
SPN is an intelligent outstanding sci-drama with some comedy mixed in.
Reaper....cheesy, ridiculous comedy.
So not on the same level.

Yes indeed as said before this Reaper show is very much a replica of SN with fact that thier revolving thier ideas around things that aren't human and how the main character would probably want revenge because something evil messed with his/her life. -Dean and Sam been there done that-....ha....ha....
I'd say to Dawn and the execs they should Lay OFF any other horror/thriller Genre until SN doesn't have anymore seasons. "Reaper" is not going to matter anyways because SN's moving on to Season 3, 4 and probably a 5. Thier fanbase is too hardcore the show has just evolved into something great... no show on CW can push your attention away from it.
Also usually when something is so good like a show, or a gal who wears a pretty dress to an event, clones tend to copy what's hot. SN hot so they make a copy. And the actors and creators back themselves up to act as thier ideas for thier show was more orginal than what's already been and IS a hit. Why the HELL would you make a entire show just to point out that Supernatural's show takes itself too seriously?? Even if it's just a little. That's a waste. Go poke fun at "The girls next door" on the E! channel or something. Sn has to make thier show serious, it's one of the best ways to impact an audience(s) emotions. To bring gloom, sadness, happiness all in one. That's real stuff, something Reaper will most likely lack.
Cheers.

I've seen the promos for Reaper and I've just got to say it looks silly. It seems more of a comedy that shoud be 30 minutes not an hour. Supernatural should be put in the Tuesday time slot once this show bombs (which it will). I like Kevin Smith but this show looks and sounds ridiculous.

Beauty and The Geek and this new show can NEVER replace GG and VM.

Ok, so this show is so going to tank. Especially if the star said crap about one of the CW's best shows, Supernatural. Supernatural is in a league of their own. It's one of the most original shows in TV right now. It doesnt need to become another CSI or Law and Order with a bunch of spin offs.

"And I firmly believe SPN can handle Tuesday nights without a lead in"
I agree 100%. Much devoted fan base.

CW- C-an't W-atch without Veronica Mars! Hmmm, what else is on besides the CW on Tuesdays?

CW- C-an't W-atch it without Veronica Mars!
( I spit out my Extra gum)

what the heck is going on over there, are you serious you are not bringing back Veronica Mars. I am never watching this station again.

I just hope that if Reaper tanks they'll give Supernatural Tuesday nights and One Tree Hill Thursday nights. OTH is a better match for Smallville, they're both relationship dramas. And I firmly believe SPN can handle Tuesday nights without a lead in.

Sounds like the show is using Kevin Smith's name to pull in viewers.
Once people find that the scripts lack Kevin's style, viewers will change the channel.

Like the rest of you, I hope this show tanks. After what that idiot said about Supernatural. He basically said "You know how Supernatural takes itself seriously?. We're gonna be like that, except we will be winking at the audience to let them know that we are just a stupid horror show". Idiot. It has lost my interest and support.

Reaper is going to get crushed. Their "star" insulted Supernatural and pretty much slaughtered any hope of picking up SN fans for itself. Dawn is an idiot. Besides they put it up against House and 24, which SN already proved they could handle.

Kevin Smith is only directing not writing the scripts? Bummer for Reaper. Sounds like it could use Kevin's creative mind.
Callie: Dawn has said she doesn't "get" Supernatural? LOL. Doesn't surprise me a bit. SPN makes viewers use their brains.

I just watched the clips of Reaper on the website:
http://www.cwtv.com/video
Could I be any less impressed? The acting is lazy and half hearted, the music is inappropriate, and the jokes aren't funny. I'm sorry, CW, why don't you just promote the stronger genre show you already have?

I remember another show Kevin Smith loved. He said that this then UPN show "is, hands-down, the best show on television right now, and proof that TV can be far better than cinema." What was it called? oh yes "VERONICA freakin' MARS!"
Posted by: Jonathan | May 17, 2007 12:29 PM
If Kevin Smith has more control over the show than just the pilot, it may have promise.
But only if he can duplicate what he accomplished in Dogma, which for all its vulgarity and humor, has some strong commentary on the state of religion among the masses.

He also said something about how his show doesn't take itself too seriously, unlike Supernatural (!?)
It was the wrong foot to get off on with Supernatural fans. It took about five minutes for that quote to circulate. As somebody who wasn't me put it, "Is 'Hey, Supernatural fans, we know you love your show, so we made a show to make fun of you!' the right foot to get off on when your show's on the same network?"
It's been all I can do not to completely dismiss the show out of hand.

Thanks for clarifying, Callie -- I was trying to get this stuff up fast, heard Kevin's name and meant to go back later to see what exactly he was doing with this show. Interesting that he's involved with it, nonetheless.
I saw that interview you're referring to -- was shocked that the lead actor would call his own show "stupid!" He also said something about how his show doesn't take itself too seriously, unlike Supernatural (!?)

Kevin Smith isn't actually "behind" the show, per se. He's only directing the pilot. Which means, after that, the show won't have Kevin Smith's name going for it.
I'm a little skeptical of Reaper. Its lead star has described it as "a stupid horror show," the same concept has been done twice and cancelled both times as Brimstone and Dead Like Me, and a reliable friend got a copy of the script and was not impressed...
It seems like this one got green lighted because all the other networks are loading their schedules up with paranormal and sci-fi themed shows. But that's no reason to grab the only thing you can get and throw it in your schedule.
I really don't want to come off pretentious, but the network already has two perfectly sound genre shows in Supernatural and Smallville. Dawn Ostroff has said, straight out, she doesn't "get" Supernatural, and it sounds like she thought "Well, people like Supernatural! But I get this version of it!"
Unfortunately, Veronica Mars's low ratings have proven that people don't plan their tv week around shows Dawn Ostroff "gets."
I don't understand why Reaper got picked up over shows that showed more promise like The World According to Barnes, or Gravity.
But maybe it'll surprise me.

Re: Reaper. I would love to see what Kevin's influence does for the show, but my feeling is it's one thing for another network to have a clone of another net's show, but why does the CW need a Supernatural clone when they should put their energy into promoting SPN.

kevin smith is great this show could be a good surprise
Posted by: natalie | May 17, 2007 11:12 AM
This is ridiculous, there replacing VM for a show like that!!! Especially when we already have Smallville and Supernatural!!
Dawn and the Execs have no idea how to run a good network!!
