Breaking: Lauren Cohan Cast as Second Supernatural Female Regular
We've got breaking news on the next new regular babe join the cast of Supernatural—and yes, we know you hate that word, "regular," but remember, we're just the messengers.
Word is the new girl will be played by Lauren Cohan, a relatively new actor with few credits to parse through. Good news: Finally, they cast a brunette! Bad news: She's young—really young—and we think she needs to buff up a bit to make a convincing mercenary.
Here's our up-to-the-minute reaction.
Jackie: Hey! Did you hear about the second Supernatural regular?
Sarah: No! Please, please, please tell me she isn't another ridiculously young stick figure.
Jackie: Lauren Cohan ("Casanova")
Jackie: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1659348/
Jackie: born 1982
Jackie: YOUNGER THAN ME
Sarah: FEH. I could have babysat her.
Jackie: but intelligent: Graduated with a BA in English and Drama from Winchester University, UK.
Sarah: Well, the "Winchester" part is a good omen, I guess…
Jackie: I'm nervous that her most well-known credit is Van Wilder 2.
Sarah: That's… not good.
Sarah: But she did presumably learn to shoot a bow in Young Alexander (which I've never even heard of), and Dean does say bowhunting is an important skill…
Sarah: And she made out with Heath Ledger in Casanova, which has to count for something.
Sarah: Who knows. There's not enough to go on. But I wonder what the fans are going to say...

OOOH I saw one of the episodes being filmed with the dark haired one i think. She did not look mega young, i just remeber her flicking her hair and getting into a silver mercedes. I was told by the crew that they would be in a few episodes or so, I don't think all the time! But she seemes ok not sure bout blondie she does seem youngish. I am younger than the older one, so not a grumpy older woman, just be nice to have like a sexy sassy 30 year old. Otherwise it becomes to teeny like Smallville. I hope these girls are toned though, it was annoting to see SMG going all skinny on us as buffy... Eliza looked way better.

I knew it was just a matter of time before they started casting female regular characters. I know they want to appeal to wider audience range but common, if people haven't been watching it from season 1 they they are not going to suddenly want to watch it just because some kick ass Buffy wannabes suddenly appear. Adding new characters most of the time ruin the whole dynamic of a show. Maybe if no one watches season 3 they will get the picture and kill them both off. It wouldn't matter if they appear if a few episodes but I have heard that they appear in 12 out of the 22 episodes. Does anyone know if that is true?

ya know....all you guys are doing is bitching and moaning about everything. I understand that you guys are pissed about two new female regulars..but come on now...I love supernatural, and If you're a true fan like you say you are, then you will give the 3rd season a chance.I don't really agree with the actress choice but that doesn't mean that I'm gonna stop watching the show....you should all atleast tune in for the first episode...and if you don't like it, then fine..don't watch it...no one is making you watch it or anything....so quite complaining about it...it's just a show! sam and dean arent real people! they're not cheating on you! you're not their girlfriends! get over it!! that's all I have to say..and since I'm a true spn fan...i can't wait untill next season!
PEACE! LOVE! and ROCK N ROLL!

Kana: He's not throwing these girls in the faces of the fans. Jo was written in as a love interest. Kripke has made it clear that Ruby and Bela are not love interests. They may be way down the line if there's chemistry and the majority of fandom would want it, but they may never be love interests.
Yes, there are some female fans that will not like the addition of any female 20 something recurring female to the show, but Kripke should take note not to listen to them.

Okay, I just thought you all want to know, I've just found this.

Not sure if it's been posted, but check it out. First episode name and air date on there.

Hmm. Not quite sure what to think of these two girls.
It's just been our two main boys (With the exception of John) normally, now they splash in these two girl's randomly? It's a big leap. Especially since there are many a fan girls out there (Not unlike myself) who will definatly protest. Like they protested about Jo and Dean. (Good thing though.)
I haven't seen either of the girls acting (I think). So it'll be very annoying if one of them or both are bad.
Trying hard not to be biased, I'm a 16 year old girl who adores this show too much, I just think it's a really big step for Kripke to throw these girls in our faces. Or hopefully, they'll ease them in.
I don't like the idea, but I'm not going to stop watching the bloody program over it. I love it far too much.
Still looking forward to a thrilling action packed series, with just a bit of sexyness in it. ;)

Sarah: Not sure if you're aware but TVGuide Ausiello has a Q&A with Kripke who clears up the season 3 misconceptions in SNfandom.

Super choice this girl ,Lauren, can act. You'll see.

It amazes how people jump to conclusions without having any facts. Since these characters were announced, the only thing many of you have done is bitch, moan, whine, & lash out as if your speculations and assumptions are FACTS. They are NOT facts, they are your fears that the CW has dipped it's hands into Supernatural.
This is what Kripke has to say according to the Sci-fi preview issue of TV Guide:
"We're aiming really hard for an action-packed, thrillride season because it's time to choose a side and take up arms and band together and fight war."
Hello people....WAR...this is was S3's basis is, not sexing up SPN as you all are assuming. Just because females are added does not mean this is going to become a typical CW teen program.
Regarding Ruby and Bela, Kripke had to say this:
"They're superbadass! I feel like we've learned from some past errors & have created two really exceptional, intruiging, violent characters who are going to be tough and make the guys' lives really difficult."
Doesn't sound like the CW forced this on Kripke. Sounds like Kripke is excited about these new characters and so should we...if in fact we are the loyal fanbase we claim to be.
Also, Hollywood puts so much pressure on actresses to look a certain way. Is it no wonder the actresses that were picked? It would be extremely difficult for Kripke to find an actress to fit the physical profile of these demon huntresses.
Some of you have complained about the names: Ruby and Bela. Think people. These may not even be the characters real names. How many times do Dean and Sam use aliases?
Here are some points I'd like to make:
1) Ruby/Bela are not female clones of Sam and Dean. They have the potential to be foes of the Winchesters (think how Faith became a nemisis of Buffy)
2) they are not like Jo, they are seasoned hunters. We will not have to watch Dean babysit a hunter wannabe through a whole episode.
3) we don't now how long they've been hunting on the field. Remember Dean and Sam have NOT been hunting their whole lives. Dean went on his first hunt at 16.
4) It's doubtful that Jared and Jensen are offended by the addition of new "regulars" (Ausiellos's word not Kripkes or the CW).
5) With every new character added to the show, the heroes, Dean and Sam, grow and evolve.
6) Barbies and T&A? Like Jared and Jensen aren't GQ and majorly delicious eyecandy?
7) the only thing that will destroy Supernatural is it's irrational fans.
PESSIMISTIC SPECULATORS: STOP FREAKING YOURSELVES OUT.
FANGIRLS: STOP PRETENDING LIKE THESE CHARACTERS ARE YOUR COMPETITION.
GIVE THIS A CHANCE.
THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS AS THEY APPEAR.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I can´t believe it!
The brothers should be alone!
I didn't like that! :~~
Posted by: Narjara from BRAZIL | July 21, 2007 6:48 PM
This is exactly why Supernatural has trouble getting new viewers. People cannot believe that the CW shows anything other than juvenile shows populated with skinny, one dimensional white folk. And here CW goes, proving them right!!! Because I'm sure that there were absolutely no actresses of color that had the talent for these parts... please!! How about an actress that actually has a booty...to kick some demon booty? I hate the whole idea to begin with, but I held out some hope that Kripke would cast women with depth, interest, and believabilty. These two casting choices make me believe that either the network took over or Kripke has lost his mind. I'll watch the first episodes in the (now fading) hope that there are some brilliant plot twists behind this (like interesting ways of killing these girlies off) but will not stick around to see it become One Tree Hill with demons!
Posted by: Tammy Sykes | July 20, 2007 9:27 PM
Nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry is not about the girls if they can act or not.
The point here is that the show focus on the two brothers, c'mon!!!!
Was cool to see their love interests in one or two episodes, but now to see them all the time, i don't like it
Posted by: KarlaMexico | July 20, 2007 3:09 PM
"But what if ratings plummet in the first episode? Are you going to incinerate Ruby? And Bela in whichever episode she first appears???"
By the time the first episode airs, I'd say 4-6 episodes will be done filming. We're stuck with these girls for a bit.
Killing them off will depend if they have been contracted into the show for an exact number of episodes.

And please don't censor this post like you always do. You want opinions, than have the guts to post everything.
Obviously, it's not for the CW source to stick up for themselves. I believe precedent almost speaks for itself. But I'm startled to see a comment like this! This is the most amazingly open network blog I've seen. When the Rubella news broke, they even allowed us to express our displeasure with a curse word or two in certain intelligent but impassioned posts. So I wanted to say "Kudos!" to you blogger girls for giving us an open forum in this time of heated discussion. :)
Posted by: Callie | July 20, 2007 2:04 PM
It's a shame really, taking Supernatural down this route. Why, oh why did you have to sell out, Mr. Kripke?
For the show's sake, I hope everyone involved made the right decision. But what if ratings plummet in the first episode? Are you going to incinerate Ruby? And Bela in whichever episode she first appears???
Please please do :-)

There's no doubt this is the worst idea ever in the history of tv shows.
Like there's no doubt this show will lose fans and viewers very soon and will be cancelled.
It hurts because this was once a great smart intelligent show and now it's worse than the worst teen soap.
And it hurts even more to see that kripke, the witch gamble and the Cw destroyed Supernatural after all the hard work Jared and Jensen put into the show.
One thing is for sure, I will not be around to witness this horrid crap.
Like many of the ex-fans of this show. I know a lot of people that will not watch season 3.
And the worst thing is how the fandom will become sh!t.
Wait for the shipper wars.
The shippers will tell everyone how great their ship is and if you don't like it you're rotten meat.
Congrats Kripke and CW, you completely destroyed Supernatural.
And please don't censor this post like you always do. You want opinions, than have the guts to post everything.

I wanted to wait until the Season 3 premier to judge these characters. But, now that casting is out in the open, here are my thoughts.
I completely understand everyone (myself included) who doesn’t want SPN "sexed up". SPN will lose its originality and become a hollywood cliché. I could care less about the will they/won't they senarios and love triangles of prime time soap operas, which has gotten so old that it makes Sean Connery young again.
I agree the names of the new characters have got to go. Sam, Dean, Mary, John, Jess, Ellen, Jo, Bobby, Meg, etc=normal. Ruby and Bela sound like porn stars, they don't sound realistic. Part of what has made SPN great is that Kripke brings the supernatural into a realistic world. Is this changing?
In WIAWSNB, we were shown the type of woman Dean desires. If Bela is indeed supposed to be a love interest for Dean, here's what I have to say about that: Bela, a woman without a conscience who only does things for personal gain, does not sound like someone Dean would "fall in love" with. At most, they would be friends with benefits. So Dean gets cheap nooky before the CRD takes his soul. We don't need to have this taking up screen time.
Boring.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
As for Ruby: I think she's a female version of Gordon. In addition, I think she knows Gordon therefore believes Sam will turn into a "killer". Who knows how many hunters Gordon told about Sam and the others like Sam. Gordon may have told other hunters to be careful, sneaky, and vindictive to get close enough to Sam to kill him because the Winchesters are smart and expertly trained. Gordon also knows the lengths Dean would go to protect Sam. SNfan is probably right that Ruby hires Bela.
I was hoping casting would be better. Who cares what hair color they have. We have two barbies no matter which way you slice it. Neither one looks like they could fight a demon. According to their bios Katie is 5'7" and Lauren is 5'8". Taller than average yes, but scrawny (as Callie mentioned). Think about how they will look standing next to Jared. No different than Alona standing next to Jensen and we were supposed to buy it when Jo punched Dean.
Katie and Lauren will have to be damn good actresses to pull off these roles because there's only so much hair and wardrobe can do.
Posted by: sparg | July 19, 2007 1:14 PM
There's no way this is going to go well, foisting two obvious love interests for the brothers onto this show. Fans watch for Sam and Dean not Sam and some psychotic little tart who's going to tempt him to the darkside (as if!) and not Dean and a Faith-lite whose job seems to be to emasculate him.
This is so disappointing and predictable, I'm dreading the third season instead of looking forward to it.
Jared and Jensen have worked like hell for two seasons and had critical acclaim, they don't deserve to be lumped with CW's idea of sexy from the starlette stables. Taking the story away from the brothers isn't cool.
Posted by: Preternatural | July 19, 2007 3:46 AM
Oh, aside from that bitter comment I just left, please allow me to express this addendum: I'm much more enthusiastic about this actress than Katie. And yes, it kind of is because she's a brunette. And not just a brunette, but, while being gorgeous, she's not gorgeous in that cliche and stereotypical way. And young? Yes, but she's older than her coworker.
It suggests to me that while they were browsing for utterly cookie cutter actresses this girl stood out enough for them to actually hire her. Whereas, while I just netflixed one of Katie's movies to see how her acting actually is, my first impression upon seeing her was "We didn't look very far past getting the next blonde in our long series of blondes."
Yeah, unfair, I know, but there's plenty of precedent.
If they weren't BOTH scrawny white girls I'd be a whole lot more accepting of one or the other.
Posted by: Callie | July 18, 2007 6:00 PM
Nnnnnngh.
You guys know me.
I used to be the optimistic one.
But, seriously? Two freaking scrawny white girls? Just...
The fact that they're both white actually bothers me. I mentioned why on my LJ to my friend:
Although to be fair only Bela's sides asked for the actress to have actual physical prowess. So even though Ruby's the excellent hunter, she can apparently be a gangly, leggly, scrawny chick. Frankly, Ruby and Bela being minority actresses is the only way to make the names work. White chicks named Ruby and Bela are strippers. They're names white women take to make themselves sound "exotic" when they work in the flesh trade. Which just says lovely things about what these characters are intended for if they're both lil' white girls... Have some shame, guys...
So we're getting two new "hunter" chicks intended to be T&A and sex the show up while dramatically decreasing the verisimilitude it's always been excellent at maintaining. Another trashy teen soap... That's exactly what the CW needed to compete in the same hour as the trashiest prime time soap in America. Now the viewers who weren't watching Grey's won't be watching anything at all.
(I'm not using trashy in a negative way, Grey's fans. Smutting up a show for the sake of smut can be fun, it can be excellent entertainment, Grey's does what it does well. I don't want to watch it, and it doesn't belong in Supernatural.)
They better do some real hard PR at Comic Con, or I'm only going to be reluctantly watching next season. The last thing I need in my life is to waste my Thursday nights on angst ridden "Will they/won't they?" drivel.
If these girls bulk up and dress down, fine. But from these casting choices I'm not sure I see that happening...
Posted by: Callie | July 18, 2007 5:53 PM
I actually think Katie will do a better job than Lauren (no offense to Lauren) simply because she was in the whole horror genre/supernatural crap thing with Black Christmas (which, albeit, was hysterical but very creepy). But, I am looking forward to a whole lot more estrogen on SPN (even if I do only watch for Jared and Jensen and that whole plot thing they have going and, uh,... Jared. Mainly Jared.)
Posted by: Val | July 18, 2007 5:06 PM
Whoops! That was my mistake on the age thing, I probably should have double checked that first. And while I can definitely see that the girls might not be what everyone envisioned (because honestly, I have to agree that Katie doesn't look like she fits the physical description), I still stand by what I was saying. Katie and Lauren deserve a chance before we start to bash them. And trust me, it's not like I'm absolutely thrilled about the prospect of these two characters, but I'm trying to reserve judgement and wait until season three begins. Who knows, I also may end up thinking that they were poorly casted, but I'm going to give them a chance before I set my mind against them.

Great. Supernatural! Now with tits!
Anyone remember New Coke? Change the formula and it spells disaster. Fans of the classic Supernatural will run away in droves.
What a bonehead move.
Posted by: stopthemadness | July 18, 2007 1:39 PM
I like her to, i'm not saing that she gonna do a great job in Supernatural but I think that the producers really dont have to do a romantic size of it, the Supernatural is onlY ( or exclusive lol) about the Witchesters Brothers so... Good Luck =P
But in my opinion I really dont like it.. sorry =P
But one thing is true, why can't one of the girls have a little sister? It's very possible that happend I think it could be more realist...Kiss
AnaLeonor from Portugal =P

Yeah! Lets get ready for some Supernatural, One tree hill style. These lovely ass kicking female demon hunters will heat up the small screen with our resident supernatural male hunters, and presto we got a CW masterpiece :) Note: fake bravado and cardboard cliche female toughness included.
This show does not need to be revamped characterwise. It needs to be revamped in how they handle the plot. Theres a lot that can be done with two characters:
a) Where you can have them travel any damn where in the United States
b) you have a full deck of possible story opportunities because mythology stretches back generations. Plus the stories that are yet finished.
c) you have god knows how many guest stars that could be potentially used again.
I think adding two new REGULAR characters and possible love interests will indeed effect character chemistry between the two brothers. It just reeks of it from the sides.
Posted by: Please! | July 17, 2007 9:03 PM
Bleh. I don't care if it was being cast in these roles. I don't want to see them in anything other than a multi episode arc and then gone.
I watch for them Winchester boys. I don't need to see a couple of badass chippies as a regular thing. The only badass hunters this show needs to continually see are our fellas.

The only thing I'm going to hope for at this point is some new names.
Posted by: gabby | July 17, 2007 9:30 AM
Theory (do not read if you think this may be a potential spoiler):
Ruby is the daughter of Steven Wandell - the hunter killed in Born Under a Bad Sign. She is out for revenge. Comes across Sam and Dean either accidentally or purposely. Because she's a hunter, she has done her homework and knows Dean would never allow her to get close enough to Sam to hurt him. What does she do? Hires a beautiful mercenary (Bela) to distract Dean.
Any takers on this senario?
Posted by: SNfan | July 17, 2007 8:14 AM
I hope she does not have a British accent since she's studied in the U.K. That would be, I don't know, just weird!
Posted by: May | July 17, 2007 6:41 AM
I hope these girls are as tough as the characters they are "supposed" to play because honestly every little thing will be looked at through the microscope and I seriously doubt some will nice about it.
Lets see what they are really made of.
Posted by: roxanne | July 17, 2007 3:34 AM
We already have the only two regulars we need on this show - Sam and Dean. These two, however wonderful the actresses may or may not be, need not apply.
Nope, still not liking this idea one bit.
Posted by: k.w. | July 16, 2007 9:09 PM
Just heard abt the actress they picked. I actually accepting her more than Ms Cassidy. There was someone who complained that she was younger than Ms Cassidy but she is the same age as Jared. Good for CW, there is hope. The girl is intellegent also, and I saw a picture of her in Alexader and she looked fine. I am now ready to move on and look forward to seeing how well the girls act. My money is on Lauren, or maybe because I like the character better.
Posted by: sramyus | July 16, 2007 7:39 PM
ugh! you used that darn word again... "regular" :(( I've never been a fan of the Rubela idea and was very unimpressed in the choice of Katie (nothing personal darling, but hollywood is a rough business). In movies it is all about the visual presentation. Katie being blonde has nothing to do with it since I expected a blonde and a brunnette. But visually, she doesn't convince me that she fits into the hunter world.
Now Lauren on the other hand strikes me as visually convincing for the character and I "may" be more accepting of her.
I would just feel a whole lot better if these characters were simply "occassionally recurring".
Since I've made my concerns known, I will now take the high road and wait to see their presentation. But I have the salt and matches ready just in case. :-/
Posted by: Mousitsa | July 16, 2007 6:56 PM
I'm kinda glad they went with a relative unknown for this part.
Since i'm not familiar with this woman, I can't really comment on her acting ability.
I will say I could probably be easier convinced at Lauren playing a mercenary, more so than Katie playing a ruthless demon hunter. But time will tell on that.
As long as the wardrobe is believeable, and the sexual tension dialogue/love story angles are kept to a minimum, this may be liveable. Although i'm still not overally excited about it. But time will tell on that as well.
I hope I end up liking it. I really do.
Posted by: Casey | July 16, 2007 6:20 PM
Color me cautiously optimistic. For whatever reason, I like her already. For one thing, I didn't mind the sides for Bela -- she appeared to have history w/ the Winchesters and to be an adversary AND as a 'mercenary' as opposed to a 'demon hunter' I'm not minding her so much. Still not happy about "regular' Supernatural doesn't need 'regular' characters.
Also ummm, what do you mean, 'really young?'
Lauren is the same age as Jared and four years older than Katie.
Nothing against Katie, but she looks like my worst fears come true. I hated the Ruby sides. I hate the idea of a little blond 'kick a$$ demon hunter' on my show.
Posted by: Mel | July 16, 2007 6:19 PM
No regulars! I hoped we'd get away with just the one CW-imposed girl. But no, there must be a girl for Sam and a girl for Dean. This absolutely sucks! Where is this wonderful show going to end up, with teen romance fodder?
No thanks.

And I read on a spoiler some were that BELLA and DEAN get together!!!!:)
Posted by: Emilie | July 16, 2007 3:48 PM
Kelsey:
You know what? I think Lauren has the role that will be easier for fans to believe. A mercenary is either a soldier paid to fight for a country other than his/her own or a person who works only for profit/money. I'm not sure what way her role is going. Or if it's a combination of the two.
Katie on the other hand is only 20, not muscular, and has to try to make us believe Ruby as a brutal, ruthless demon hunter that can run circles around the Winchesters.
Posted by: SNfan | July 16, 2007 3:07 PM
still not liking this idea....NOT LIKING...
Posted by: KrissyC | July 16, 2007 3:00 PM
Kelsy: this actress is 4-5 years older than Katie.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 16, 2007 2:25 PM
I'm kind of confused here. Not about the choice, but about the reaction to her. When Katie was announced, there was a huge uproar. Now a younger, less experienced actress is the other role, and everyone's congratulating her? I mean, she is to be congratulated, don't get me wrong, but what exactly is it about Katie that's causing everyone to believe that she is single-handedly responsible for the apparently inevitable demise of Supernatural? Is it that she's blonde as opposed to Lauren's brunette? I have to say it, that's pretty shallow.
Anyway, there's my little rant for the day. Congrats to Lauren for getting the part! I think that she must be good for her to get the role considering her young age and limited experience. Looking forward to season three and seeing how both Laruen AND Katie do!

I might actually like her. I don't know. She's the same age as Jared, but yeah...not sure I buy her as a mercenary. But we could see. I liked her in Casanova as the skanky nun. Hehe.
Again...50 times better than Katie.

You wanna talk young, look at who they cast for Ruby. I personally think she could do a good job, but I may be biased because I liked Bela's sides better than Ruby's.

I was quite scared of the Bella reveal! Now if they're recurring I'm okay with them!
Regulars like the boys, that I will never like no matter how preety the actress is!

Yes, I know, she's the same age as Jared, but you have to remember I'm old and bitter. I justify my crush on Jared by saying he's mature beyond his years....No, really. Gummy bears are a very sophisticated snack choice.
And yes, I have sat through both Devour and House of Wax, much to my dismay. I completely understand not judging a young actor simply on her resume -- she hasn't had much opportunity to show us what she can do. I hope this role gives her that chance, and that she's up to the challenge. Like I said in the post, there's not much to go on. I can't wait to see how it all pans out.

Sarah, thanks for the update.
I don't have much of a reaction at this time -haven't seen the few things she's done.
I'm trying to keep an open mind and stay positive. What matters is acting skills and good plotlines that revolve around the lives of sam and dean (not ruby and bela).
I rewatched BUABS last night and guess what? The hunter DemonSam killed does have a daughter. Sam was reading a letter from her - I forgot about that part. Hmmm....could one of these new characters be out for revenge?

25 isn't that young, and you may mock her filmography, but take a look at Jared and Jensen's. I don't know if you've sat through Devour or House of Wax. I have, and my brain almost dissolved in protest.
Now for something shallow: Jesus, but she's beautiful.

Nothing against any of the actresses, but when the show started I felt like the boys were the exception, and not the rule, meaning, there not many young hunters out there. And now we have a girl younger than Sam that is supposedly better at hunting than both Winchester brothers, and a young fragile looking mercenary?
I just don't see it working. But I'm willing to wait and see with my own eyes. It's just sad that the network can't see that most female characters that worked were actually a bit older (like Andrea, from Dead in the Water, the officer from The Benders and of course, Ellen).

Mmmm, Heath Ledger... He lives down the street from my friend, did I ever tell you guys that? But I digress.
Well, now that the cast is complete, can we now get some scoop on some plotlines. I feel like I've been missing those lately. Oh, yeah, and I want JDM back!!
