Aliens in America: Previews for Muslim and Political Orgs

Aliens in America is getting a lot of buzz, but it's bound to raise some eyebrows. That's why the producers are previewing the show before Washington think tank The Brookings Institution and the Islamic Center of Southern California. We're loving the idea of a bunch of Washington political animals laughing at a CW comedy. Who woulda thunk it?

"We just want as many people to hear about the show as possible, and we think (the screenings) make complete sense," executive producer David Guarascio told Variety. He and fellow producer Moses Port have been talking to the Islamic Center about "Aliens" since the show was in the script stage. "They were excited to have a show that was a comedy and where the Muslim character wasn't a terrorist."

We've been having trouble trying to describe the show to our friends in a way that didn't make it sound offensive or boring. So we're going to steal PopMatter's take from now on:

"This show is hilarious. Cavemen on ABC tries to be a commentary on race and stereotypes in the United States, but this show actually succeeds with great humor and sensitivity. It’s almost as if the staff of The Onion was in on the writing; it’s funny because it’s true."

What do you think? Will you be tuning in to the show, or is it not your idea of a good time? Does the news about pre-screenings at political and Muslim organizations make you more or less likely to tune in?

I was very much looking forward to this new show. It was funny, erudite, and clearly not entirely serious. I think it raises questions for people and from comments here listed so far both sides of the fence are commenting and better yet watching.

having now seen the pilot episode and most of the behind-the-scenes clips, i can't tell you how excited my husband and i are to have this show out there! as a blonde-haired, blue-eyed american (of arab descent) married to a much more obviously arab muslim american, we are thrilled that someone, somewhere is finally talking out loud about the stereotypes and the fear that have been sewn into our society since september 11th.

we all know that americans are not ignorant; neither are we monolithic or malicious or close-minded (except maybe in high school). but we do often forget the value of real engagement and dialogue, allowing our silence to nurture the stereotypes and misunderstandings we whisper only amongst ourselves.

so if it takes an "alien" to point out our flaws and to then forgive them, reminding us in the process that, as humans, we can still communicate, connect, and laugh at ourselves (particularly in spite of the religious, racial and cultural differences between us), well, so much the better!

our only question is: why didn't we -- or SOMEONE -- do this earlier?!

Firstly I am a Muslim and a first generation Pakistani American who moved to the USA at almost the same age as the character in the show Raja Musharraf did....and secondly I think this show rocks!
I do not think it has shown any negative stereotypes about Muslims but on the other hand it is trying to bridge the gap between the two cultures in a very positive way through comedy. The character of a Pakistani Muslim is shown in a very positive way and is the perfect example of what a Muslim boy should be.
Also, for all those PAkistani Americans who are 2nd or 3rd generation Americans and are taking offence to the show, let me remind you that this show is not about you or portraying you. It is about a Pakistani young lad who has just come from Pakistan and is very much into his relegion and culture still, something like your parents or grandparents would have been like. So sit back and enjoy the wonderful script and acting which I have seen so far and learn to take things on a lighter note sometimes.
Way to go CW, Im your biggest fan from today.

I just watched this most ignorant show. I can not believe that KTLA put this on the air. It is an insulting show to muslims. It just helps spread negative stereotypes about other cultures and religions. The fact that it is called "Aliens in America" just adds insult to insult. I hope this show does not make it past a trail.

this show is the most offence show .it s very racesist and i am outraged that CW would even air this show.it is clearly making fun of Muslims.Muslim kids have enough trouble as it is after the 9/11 attacks and i am

Not only does this show insult Muslims and Pakistanis, but it reinforces the stereo-type that white america fears anyone not of european decent.

I would think in real life, any family that signed up for a foreign exchange student would be delighted to have someone from a very different culture, that's generally the point.

I think this show will cause hostility from both sides.

Liz, maybe they saw CBC doing a show like this and ripped them off.

Well first of all let me start by saying that I am a Pakistani Muslim born and raised in New York City. There are several things about this show which I do not appreciate and there are many incorrect characteristics that you guys aimed at Pakistanis which do not applied to me or any of my other Pakistani American friends. A show like this mocks the Pakistani American and strongly sterotypes them as illiterate people with a funny accent. I also believe that this show will help to delay the assimilation of Pakistanis into the American society and wil strengthen the idea of not accepting them. What I dont realize is why you guys did not make a show with a Pakistani like me who was born here and is more American then a 3rd or 4th generation person from another country. Alternatively you guys tok the most "brown skinned" "Kumar" looking guy and place him on the show. I feel that the things in my life are soo much more interesting than this show you guys will air on Oct. 1st. You can contact me at me email for further info or if you guys want to talk about something serious such as casting me for a show. Thank you.

CBC already did it. It's called Little Mosque on the Prarie and it sucks. I don't expect much from this either.

This show should not be aired its bad to make fun of others religion.

Sorry AIM, I'm addicted to Prison Break.

Honestly, the preview doesn't show enough to grab my interest. I would think the CW would have picked a more comedic clip to use for the preview.
