Supernatural: The Great Debate
We always get a little nervous when Supernatural tries to address philosophical questions. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We think last night's debate over the nature of humanity vs. demonkind was largely successful -- but we were glad there was plenty of butt-kicking, wise-cracking and things-going-boom to keep things moving. What about you?
We were thrilled, as always, to see Bobby -- we'll never get tired of him! -- especially when he was shooting the guys his drop-dead glare. Hee! But we loved him shooting Ruby even more. Bobby is a evil-defeating bad-ass, and don't you forget it! Too bad the sights on the Colt were off when he went after the possessed priest...
The guys took on a town run amok, just oozing depravity. The brothers suspect demonic goings-on, and they're right -- sort of. See, a couple of demons took up residence, and that is indeed when things went to hell (so to speak), but they aren't directly controlling the town. Nope, they're just encouraging people to give in to their own base natures, and humans of the town are happy to oblige. Once they develop a taste for sin, they just run with it.
What did you think of Richie? We kind of loved him - but we must confess, we're also kind of relieved he won't be coming back. A little bit of him went a long way. Still, getting your head nearly twisted off is no way to go.
When Dean goes to avenge Richie's death, he gets trapped in the basement with demon-possessed Casey - and while waiting for rescue, they get to talking. What do you think of Casey's argument? We have to admit she made some good points - there are plenty of horrific things that people do that we wish we could blame on demons, but nope, it's just us. Still, we're not exactly ready to concede that humanity is hopeless and give the world back to the denizens of Hell. There's more to us than just our baser instincts.
We were interested in Casey's revelations, though -- that demons have their own higher power and figure of faith; that old Yellow Eyes was Azazeal, a high-echelon figure in hell, and that Sam was basically the whole of Azazeal's plan. We already know that a bunch of demons want to kill Sam, but do you think there are a bunch that still want to follow him? And is it worse for the demons to be leaderless, in chaos, or for them to be organized? Which scenario would cause more damage?
Ruby certainly seems bent on causing plenty of damage herself -- she even helped Bobby fix the demon-killing Colt! Why would she do that? Is she just a run-of-the-mill hellspawn, or is she higher on the demonic food chain than we realize? We were half hoping Sam would shoot her with the Colt in the end, but he just couldn't do it. What if she really can help Dean? Would he be able to forgive himself ifhe killed her before she could help? Or is this all just a big con on Ruby's part?
Poor Dean is pretty torn up -- he claims he's not afraid of hell, but that denial didn't reach his eyes. Jensen did a great job of conveying Dean's unease, his realization of what he's in for. He still thinks he made the right choice, but his bravado act doesn't quite stick anymore. Plus, he has to worry about Sam being possibly evil! We kind of think he's getting paranoid -- he told Bobby that Sam looked cold when he pulled the trigger on the demon couple, but we thought Jared actually gave us the layers of resolve and regret, guilt and conviction that dog his every move now. He's not cold at all -- he feels every death he deals. That's what makes him Sam.
What about you? Tell us what you think in the comments!

I loved this epi cuz it actually made u think. i mean i do love all the action but this one showed that they do more than just ill but that they think about the outcome of their action!!

gee, god forbid we should actually have to use our brains while watching an episode! (and that was my sarcasm, in case you missed it). This episode was FANTASTIC for exactly the reason of less action, more thought. Not every episode can be all running, shooting, fighting... we need the ones that make us think about issues, which aren’t so black and white. Issues with lots of gray areas which open up lots of possibilities in terms of direction for the show. And it had plenty of action too!
I loved this episode for many of the reasons already mentioned (Bobby, the basement talk, the info reveals involving Sam, etc). And for those of us with a discerning eye, we were pretty sure that YED was Azazel since last year. Remember when all those bloggers visited the set? One of their pictures taken showed many things posted on a wall and one was the exact same symbol that John had drawn to summon YED in IMTOD. It was labeled as “sigil of Azazel”.
The implication is clear: if Sam gives in to the darkside then he will be in control of the demons. His word then becomes “law” and he can simply order the Crossroads Demon, or even her boss, to cancel the deal on his brother. Ruby appears to be playing along to be the second in command. And this whole thing is a fascinating scenario with so many delicious possibilities!! The season is great so far!
Sasha Barrese who played Casey was terrific and I was saddened that Dean couldn’t stop Sam in time. (If we can have a sympathetic vampire around in Lenore, then why couldn’t there be a sympathetic demon in Casey). If there is anything Sasha’s performance showed, it was how much I was wishing that SHE was cast as Ruby instead. Then I might actually be interested in the Ruby character, which is turning out to be a very interesting and multi-layered character. Katie’s presentation of Ruby is simply annoying instead of engaging and riveting and I dread future annoyances by Katie that are currently made bearable only by the story plot reveals involving Ruby. If she were just in 1 or 2 episodes, then I would brush it off and move on. But she may be in 6-12 episodes. Her inadequacies are already showing against Jared, and they will become blatantly obvious when she is up against Jensen at some point. Unless there is a major improvement and soon, all I can say at the moment is that Demon Ruby needs a new host body. Unfortunately they are already up to eppy #10 in filming, so we are stuck with the mediocrity. The only thing giving me hope is knowing that Ruby is a demon... and I’ll be looking forward to that inevitable exorcism!!

WHY WHY OH WHY couldn't Casey be Ruby?
It's been days since Sin City aired and I, too, am still lamenting that Sasha Baresse (who played Casey) wasn't casted as Ruby. She had the perfect mix of menance, snarkiness, sex appeal and softness in her air and was SO convincing as a demon.

Thanks jas and nuj for setting me straight in your Oct 27th posts.
I only really started seeing SPN regularly with Season 2 so either missed or forgot (please forgive me) ep. 1.21 (Salvation) to which you refer - I stand corrected.
And thanks for shooting me 'ontheotherhand' - knew someone would :-D
Ciao, A.

The poll needed another option! The best line from the episode was Dean when he said "Girl's got an ass that could fit on a nickel!"
I've been laughing about that for days!

I loved this episode! not the best but so far this season has been brilliant.
i know so people have commented on how boring this episode was, and thats their opinion, but I really enjoy it when they do the religious episodes, i love to be challenged sometimes by what i watch, the questions that were raised in this episode we not really challenging, but made me think.
this is one of the reasons i adore this show, it has the great relationship between the brothers, (the role reversal in this episode was interesting how sam was shoot first ask questions later and dean actually wanted to save her! also his confession to bobby about sam, awww dean he looked so worried that sam could be different. which i dont really think he is, if he is dean IS going to save him like always!) i love how they have the comedy, the angst and the excitment etc. yet they show they are an intelligent show, with a thinking mind, actually perpared to address and raise controversal ideas.
We now have a name for YED, yay. what dean does with the info he learnt will be interesting.
That demon chick was frigging awesome, brillant performance there. Ruby is lacking in strong character at the moment, however i am intrigued to see where they go with it. there have been some interesting theroies floating around. don't agree with them mind. except the ones that mention *cough* meg they even had the same red coat.
Another awesome dude is Bobby, he remade the colt! although was that only with ruby's help becuase if it was that easy why couldnt they had made more bullets before?
overall great epsisode, cant wait till next week! i would like to see more dean and sam together time mind. it was weird to see sam in a car and not have dean driving. the chemisty between them is one of the best things about this show!

Not my favourite episode by far.
Too much talking, not enough gore.
I mean, I do understand that certain things must be addressed, but couldn't they've done it in a rather more indirect way? Honestly, not everything needs to be spelled out for us - we're really not (all) utter simpletons. SHOW us, please do not TELL us any more.
Please?

RE: Lynn's comment about the boys being apart too much...
I noticed it in previous eps but it didn't bother me; I missed them more in this ep, though it didn't really take away from it for me. I don't want it to go on too long--HOWEVER, I think they are doing it deliberately to take some of the pressure off both JA and JP. Every scene they're apart is a scene one of them is getting a rest. We don't want to burn them out!
Scorpio, remember that Meg was in church when she killed Pastor Jim? I think powerful demons, or demons of a certain "breed" (for lack of a better term), aren't affected by holy ground.
Also, the Colt didn't need fixing, per se. Bobby took it apart to try to see how it worked. When he put it back together it needed adjusting (hence the filing of the sight). Ruby "helped" him with it in that she gave the bullets Dean made the power to kill demons the way her knife does.

Great recap Sarah.
I decided to wait a few episodes to comment on S3, which is off to a great start. Better than last season. As always Jensen and Jared are amazing. Although, as lynn mention, Dean and Sam have been separated quite a bit and I miss the brotherly banter. Even so, I loved all 4 episodes. This last ep began delving into Azazel's plan for the demons he released from hell and what role Sam was to play.
On the new characters:
Ruby - While I like this character, I'm not fond of katie. Not sure what it is. If it's her overly girly voice that takes away from her "badassness". Or if she's trying to hard to act "bad". Something about her delivery isn't flowing well. Anyway, the idea of this character is great and I love the direction this part of the story is going.
Bella - Lauren did a fab job in the previous ep. Like the character and how lauren plays her.
Note to Scorpio: don't forget that "meg" entered Pastor Jim's church in the Salvation episode. That "rule" doesn't apply to all demons. In regards to the colt - i don't think it needed fixing. i think they took it apart to study it and figure out how to make new demon killing bullets, which Ruby helped Bobby accomplish.

BANG! ;)

I loved this ep!! So many things came out in it that my head is swimming with possibilities. Once again the acting was surpurb!! Jared was brilliant when he realized those two goons weren't possessed & Jensen once again blew my socks off with his "nah, I'm not scared of going to hell" speech when we all can see that Dean is terrified of it. Love, love Bobby!! I especially loved the bantering between the three of them at the beginning.
I adore Ruby!!! She's awsome in a twisted kinda way. Kudo's too you Katie, you're awsome!!

did anyone pick up how at the end of the episode ruby said she was sam's "little fallen angel", I think she might be the devil himself
Posted by: IGETMONEY | October 27, 2007 12:35 AM
Can I say this episode was better written than the ones before it. How can we bribe Singer to write all the episodes?? Him and Ben and I willing to deal.
WHY WHY OH WHY couldnt Casey be Ruby? Who do I have to bribe to make that happen... again I will deal. I would rather have Casey and the Priest than the Rubela virus. The only thing I will give Ruby this episode is she was written well, but gah Katie quit trying so hard... Sharon Stone is NOT your friend and lay off Nikki already. Make her your own or get to steppin.
Dean forgetting his Latin always has and always will annoy me. I dont care it will, end of story, bottom line. Do you really expect me to believe he would forget Latin!!!!! GAH!!!! BOTH Winchesters should know their Latin... their Daddy taught them better than that.
These little Lucifer tidbits floating around Ruby... it makes sense... I can see that... if this is seriously the direction you are going into... that is wrong on about a million levels because seriously, Katie oh no no no no no no no no to the millionth power and then some. Brilliant idea, POOR execution but wait, what else is new???
Bobby is full of win. He is love and I am insulted HE ISNT A REGULAR CHARACTER. WHY !!!!!!! Gah who do I have to bribe for that one too???
My mantra = "holding on for Dean, holding on for Dean, holding on for Dean!"
oh yah... when do we get an episode with "two brothers on a road trip something about hunting things and the family business"? Season One and Two seem so far away and its been so long I may have forgotten a few details but I am pretty sure this is show I signed up for.

I liked this episode, save for that one scene of this woman motioning for Dean to come into the limo and Dean actually looking interested; the rest, though, was quite enjoyable for me.
While I didn't actually like Richie, I did feel badly that he died just because it's obvious that Dean cared a bit about him. I loved how he (Dean) saw Ritche's good intentions despite his naive (and slightly slimy, IMO) nature.
I also really liked the actress that played Casey and am actually wishing that she had been cast in Ruby's part as she had the right edge that I think someone playing a demon possessed person needs to be able to portray. Speaking of Casey, I loved her and Dean's scenes in the basement. I loved the insight we got into the demonic world, I love that Dean now knows that there are demons gunning for Sam and perhaps some that still see him as a potential leader and I loved watching Dean ask about Hell...it's the first time, IMO, we've really see him actually THINK about where he's going after he died. And JA nailed that scene when he was denying being scared but you could totally tell he was terrified. I also loved that last scene with Dean and Bobby, where Dean asks Bobby about Sam. My other favourite Dean moment was when we learned that Dean had tricked Casey, I love it when we get to see the clever-side of Dean, who makes plans.
There wasn't a lot of huge Sam moments in this episode, IMO, but I did love that we got him feeling guilty over what he did. IMO, unlike in AHBL 2, this time when Sam killed Casey the look on Sam's face wasn't rage but more of a reflective "I could leave her BUT last time I put the knife down look what happened..." and I liked that it showed that Sam wasn't happy that he had to make these kind of choices.
As for Ruby, I wasn't hugely impressed with KC's performance, though thought that it was a slight step up overall from KAAR, but the character continues to intrigue me. (And I must say towards the end of the motel scene between Sam and Ruby, when KC started on the whole collateral damage part, I quite like her performance there, as I found that it wasn't to over the top - for me it was factual and almost sympathetic to Sam's situation, while not trustworthy.) Ruby's role, or more specifically what she sees as her role right now, IMO, is actually best described by Ruby herself - she's Sam's "fallen shoulder angel"; she's going to be the one whispering in his ear that what he's doing is okay and that it had to be done, slowly trying to set Sam down that slippery slope. I actually liked it when she said, "Then you wouldn't be Sam." as I felt that this line was delievered with a little bit of disappointment, like 'sigh, this is going to take a lot of work' and am quite interested to see the next time Sam and Ruby meet.
Bobby. I LOVE this man!!! I loved how after he was thrown by that demon, he encouraged Sam to go save his brother with no thought as to his own condition. (I still don't know how Ruby managed to get him to trust her, but maybe he figured that he could use all the help he could get and I'm sure that protective circle in is ceiling has been repaired.) I also like how he tried to reassure Dean - he's becoming so protective of the brothers and it just makes me love him more each time!
Lastly, did anyone notice that they said it had been TWO MONTHS since they'd opened the Devil's Gate, that means Dean only has TEN MONTHS left...it scares me sometimes how fast (or how slow) the writers can make Dean's clock tick.
Posted by: immie_8 | October 26, 2007 9:05 PM
I really liked this episode. The opening scene with Bobby and the boys made me feel all gooshy inside.
I also really loved Dean's bartender Demon. Those scenes were smoking and both actors were really "on." I think that Dean should get violated by hot demon-tongue every episode. It makes me cackle with glee every time.
Jensen really knocked this one out of the park when he was asking about hell and saying he wasn't afraid. He's really so good at showing us exactly what Dean is feeling even while he's saying the complete opposite. I really hope Kripke appreciates just how much Jensen brings to make this show work each and every week.
Jared was also great and I'm glad they're giving him a bit more comedy. I thought he was especially good in the last scene with Ruby. He's doing a good job of maintaining the mystery of Sam's head is at without losing my sympathy with some of his more extreme actions.
Alas Ruby, both the character and the actress, just make me want to fast forward through all her scenes. I just find the character too convenient in terms of popping up with the solution to every problem the boys seem to have.
I actually feel very badly for not liking Cassidy more because I can see how hard she is trying, but she is just not working for me. I don't know if it's simple likability or if she's not right for the role which requires much more subtlety than she's able to give, or if it's how grating the character is but I just find Ruby working my last nerve every time she's on screen.
Otherwise it was a great episode.

Bobby rocks my world! More Bobby!
As for the ep, I thought it was a little slow. And I'm not digging Ruby. The actress is just trying to hard.
Posted by: Valerie | October 26, 2007 6:56 PM
The only thing that really is sticking with me, a day after this one, is how SO bloody tired I am of the boys being split up this season. The amazing chemistry of the leads doesn't help much when they get about five - ten minutes shared screen time per week (save episode 3x03).
Come on show, I love you, but give me my boys back *together*.
Also, Ruby is on about my last nerve. I wish she'd put up or shut up, or just move on entirely.

LOVED this episode. Not a ton of action, but it was absolutely fascinating. I love the mythology on this show! One of the best things about this fandom is going on discussion forums and seeing people googling about demons and legends and using information they learned from theology/mythology classes...it's just so different from any other show. Much more involved (and educated) than anything I've ever seen. Love it.
But anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I can no longer like anyone on this show because sure enough, they get killed off. I liked Richie and I was sad when he died, but I was absolutely devistated when possessed!bartender got killed by Sam. I LOVED her, and I thought it was great that the writers brought up the issue again that not all demons want the same thing (i.e. possessed!bartender didn't want lover boy to kill Dean). I thought that was really awesome how Dean and a demon had a slightly hostile but still sincere heart-to-heart and (dare I say?) bonded. And the end when he was actually willing to let her go free and tried to stop Sam from shooting her? Complete 180 from S1 Dean (yay character growth!). And the last shot from above of the dead demons (er...people) was just goregous.
Also about the scenes where Dean and the demon are trapped(can you tell they were my fav part?):
- it was too funny when Dean was trying to remember the exorcism! Love the faces he was making! =]
- loved it when Dean asked what hell was like, and loved it even more when he said he wasn't afraid. It was just heartbreaking how plainly terrified he was. BIG thumbs up to Jensen. Excellent as always.
About the episode in general:
- JP did a fantastic job. He's really stepped up his game for S3. The part where he's all awkward and slowly backing out of not!possessed!guy's office had me laughing hysterically.
- Ruby is awesome. Loved her line about peace on earth and a new shirt.
- COLT!!!! =D
- I love that Bobby is such a dad to these boys! Too cute!

Episode was excellent!! Keep writing Bobby in please - he's more of a father to the boys than John ever was (yeah o.k. shoot me now :D)
I agree Casey did bring up some interesting tidbits for future plot lines and made Dean FINALLY aware of the true importance Sam (the crown prince) was to Azazel. Poor Dean, a town full of hotties and he didn't get any (except for a rather chaste kiss from the demon), he's now starting to believe Sam isn't all there and even though he had his 'game-face' on he's terrified of dying and going to hell. Kudos to Jensen for his usual perfect portrayal of conflicting emotions and THANK YOU for pronouncing the Latin correctly (only an Italian could have done it better) - also to the writers as 'persona' can also mean an actor's mask -a play on words perhaps??)
Question - how can a demon be in a church?? Because they are fallen angels or because these were centuries old so their power negates the sanctity of the Church just as Casey was able to ignore the exorcism spell - hmmmmm??
Another question did I miss something about the Colt - at the end of S.3 Dean put it in the trunk of the Impala why did it need fixing, it just needed new demon killing bullets, non??
Anywho, I like the post of elusive_life_77's guesses about what Sam could accomplish and as he isn't possessed by a demon, but is a half demon, there is nothing to exorcise so the thread for Season 4 could be Dean and Bobby, with the help of Bella, stealing the right artifact to bring Sam back from the dark-side - hmmm sounds pretty good ;-)
Apropos of nothing, the JJ's are starting to look tired ALREADY and this was only episode 4 - give them some time off the poor guys - even if it means we deal with reruns for awhile we still get to see the show.
Get some rest - Ciao from Toronto

I one poll you mis spelled Bobby's name.Favorite line from the episode poll.
Great eppy

So I agree with the previous post in some ways. I think Ruby is trying to slowly convert Sam to the dark side so he will take control of his army. Thus saving Dean by killing the cross-road demon. The part I disagree with, it Ruby's intentions. My thoughts can be summed up by this: Every king needs a queen by his side. She will have Sam take out the major demons that are fighting for power, which will take out the competition and pull more demons to his side. Ruby is just trying to ally herself with power.

I KNEW the YED had a name! Glad that one finally got answered.
Posted by: Heather | October 26, 2007 12:24 PM
Overall liked this epi. LOVED that old yellow eyes was Azazel. If you don't know the mythology behind that name, Google it. BUT...
Ummmm...Bobby? You just shot a possessed HUMAN in the heart. RIP that host!
Sam as 'the smart one'? First, getting old guys. Second, he leaves his cell phone on ring when he goes to scope out Trotter's office, leaves the office door open and doesn't wear gloves when Mr. FBI-man Henrickson (sp?) is still after them? Yeah.
Dean, a DEMON hunter, doesn't have more than the first line and a half of the exorcism memorized?
I kind of liked demon!Casey. I liked the actress. I would have liked to see more of her.
And the "collateral damage" speech... no way now that Sam can claim that he doesn't know what's going to happen when he has morally ambiguous decisions to make... like killing innocents perhaps? He has good intentions in trying to save Dean. The road to hell being paved with good intentions and all.
Ruby... *cough*Meg*cough*
Posted by: ontheotherhand | October 26, 2007 12:18 PM
Personally, I thought the ep was fantastic. They crammed A LOT of info into it and opened a whole new range of possibilities for the rest of the season.
My guesses...
1.Ruby is conning Sam to either get in good with the "Boss" or just for kicks. (I was just starting to like the idea of a semi-helpful, we're not all alike Demon...sigh)
2.Sam could claim the demon army and order them back to hell.
3. By going darkside for awhile Sam could find a way to free Dean from his deal and of course Dean and Bobby find a way to save Sammy from himself.
BTW, I just love Bobby! He is such a great mix of father figure and smart ass that I start grinning almost as soon as I see him.

I just have to say it again,Jared is knocking every single episode out of the park as Sam,everything he feels everything he says, just awesome!
